Short stories portray the experiences of an angel in Los Angeles, a Jewish lecturer haunted by a ghost, a Polish immigrant to America, and other characters
Middle of the road three stars because I'm honestly not sure where I stand.
The stories are interesting, and strange, each one is a bit like an inebriated friend is telling you about their fever dream about murdering his cheating opinionated wife.
There's feeling and expression there that, honestly, I don't have the life and cultural experience to fully appreciate.
This is an interesting series of short stories with a strong Jewish slant written around 1982. The short of the book’s title is a remarkable mix of parasites, Nazis, Jews, sex and love-affairs and quite outstanding. “Genesis” is about an Angel fathering a son; “Stack o Wheats murders” is about violet photography (true?); “Somewhere over the Rainbow” about an artist; “America” is about a Jewish boy’s view of ‘Merica’; ”Svoboda” is trying to find someone. There is also “Tsatske” and “Kaynynhoreh” and “Ashkenazia” to finish.
A couple of quotes:
“You cannot hate the dead and you lose touch with the living”
“the only difference between angels and devils is one of occupation; angels are the Almighty’s sycophants, where as devils are his secret service. Heaven is Utopia. Perfect because it is only theoretical”
This is reasonable set of shorts but doesn’t really live up to the description on the back – not as weird, erotic or squeamish making as suggested; I’m not a great fan so only 3 stars.
