Horace and Hattie are hedgehogs and the very best of friends. Together they make shadow puppets, follow slimy snail trails, and search for spider webs. One autumn day they are watching the leaves fall from the trees when they hear a squeak . . . Could it be a new friend to play with?
This is the third book of this series that I have read, and I enjoyed it just as much. Wee ones will have fun searching for Horace, Hattie, and their new friend in this one. This one follows the same format as the other two I read: tells of things Horace and Hattie like to do together, something they each like to do by themselves, and then something new they encounter together. Hope the husband-and-wife team continue the series.
I mostly gave this book four stars because I was obsessed with how the illustrations looked. The settings were so cute. This would be a great book for younger children. It follows two little hedgehogs who run into a bat and begin to play hide n seek but don't even communicate they just all catch on and begin to play which I thought was cute. If I wanted to look deeper into a message within the book I would say that there was a "language barrier" between the animals but they were still able to understand and play with each other. (This could also be a stretch and me looking for meaning whilst there isn't one)
This is British, so let me describe it as "treacly" rather than "sticky-sweet." The title alone warns you about that, and yet, I kind of like it. The art is a bit like the old Czech "Mole" movies, and in fact is a lot like one of the Mole movies with dialogue added.
Is it just me, or does this series vibe on Asperger's or Autism? This entry maybe less than the first, which was specifically about how hard it is to hug someone. But all three I've read teach the reader how to have fun with a friend, and how to have fun when one's friend is busy. Actually, this is about how to make a new friend, so I guess it really is potentially good for some children on the spectrum. (If I'm wrong, please forgive and correct me. I don't actually know anyone challenged, so I can only go by what I've read.)
As the leaves start falling from the trees and the weather turns cooler, it's so much fun to play outside with friends. This adorable picture book shows young readers the fun things friends can do on an autumn day. The illustrations were made up of tiny pieces of fabric, salvaged from the authors' little girls’ baby clothes and photographed. This book would be great as part of a seasonal collection in a primary-grade classroom library.

What a fun book about friendship, acceptance, and kindness! The illustrations are bright and colorful and there are plenty of items within the illustrations for children to count and discuss. I think a great picture book tells a story but offers other ways to enjoy its pages. (counting items, identifying items and continuing possible stories based on pictures.) I look forward to reading other books by Steve Wilson and Lucy Tapper!
This was cute but the story didn’t make sense, and feels like something I could’ve written in 5 minutes. It just wasn’t especially cute or creative. Yes, little kids are maybe more interested in the pictures, but I still want to serve him a variety of good books. And this one isn’t it. Would’ve been one star but he got the hedgehog named “Horace” confused with a horse because of my pronunciation and that was hilarious to me.
Two hedgehogs are sad that winter is coming and all the leaves are falling off the trees. They try to put them back on but instead find a friend. A little bat plays hid and seek (or hide and squeak) with them. Then he is supposed to go back to his family. One hedgehog gives him an idea. All his family shows up and hangs in the tree, making it look like it has leaves again.
This book was very cute. it followed Horace and Hattie as they trailed along and went on adventures with each other. they were the best of friends. they made a new friend along the way which was a bat. they all played together and it was super cute. this book is good for kids and I know they will enjoy it.
These little hedgehogs are very cute, and this is a fun story without being that much about autumn. It's mainly about friends playing hide and seek. Very adorable, could see reading with a preschool class.
I was so happy I found another book with a bat character in it to read at my Bats and Owls storytime, but I was really amazed that hardly any of my preschoolers knew what a bat looked like and many of them pointed to the bat and called it a vampire... I don't even know....
Horace and Hattie are at it again. They continue to show the reader how to enjoy nature and things you can do by yourself. The story reminds us that hide and seek is a game anyone can play with a new friend.
Another Fall Book I liked the pictures better than the story. Although, this book was cute with the hide and squeak with a bat. Fall, are you ever coming to where I live. Usually it is over by now and we have had very little color or color weather... Sigh!
I read this to my daughter for a bed time story and we both loved it! Sometimes it does the heart good to read a children’s book, no matter the age! The characters were so cute, the artwork beautiful, and overall great. We even found ourselves laughing a time or two. 💗
Horace and Hattie find a squeaky friend to play hide-and-go seek amidst fall fauna and objects. Not the most graceful writing but it fits nicely in the fall niche.
