First of all be advised that the description listed on Goodreads is not accurate at all to what this book actually is.
Wages of Sin: The Devils Advocates takes place largely in Hell, where Dr Frank M Stein embarks on a journey to gather the leaders of various regions of Hell. This includes Dracula, the Horsemen of the Apocalypse, Dr Jekyl, and others.
Wasn’t sure what to expect going in since nobody I know has ever heard of these books. I was pleasantly surprised by what I got from the experience. The world building is interesting and kept me wanting to see what would happen next. All these various characters interacting with the backdrop of meeting at the center of power in Hell is very interesting, if not a little bit silly.
As the first book in a series, the story mainly consists of introducing the reader to the world and the characters and setting up the main conflict. Don’t go in expecting much resolution. This book mainly exists to set the stage for the story moving forward and to that end it did its job well. I finished the book genuinely interested to see where it was going.
If I had any major critiques it is that, for a nearly 700 page book, not too much happens in it. Lots of conversations to flesh out the world and the characters (of which there are a lot). I’d be lying if I said I didn’t find myself occasionally growing annoyed at yet another long conversation between characters. Speaking of the characters, most are pretty good, though they do have a tendency to act strangely without much emotional regulation. Though that of course could be due to the author informing the reader of a characters true feeling right in the moment without much ambiguity. It’s not a bad thing but it did feel odd and took some getting used to. Some characters did feel very flat compared to others without much motivation though I suspect that will be fleshed out throughout the series.
Another thing I feel is important to mention is that I believe this book is self published based on the fact that some obvious grammar errors are throughout the entire book. Thankfully though I was invested enough in the story to overlook these things. Overall I really enjoyed the experience of the devils advocates and I look forward to seeing what happens next in this dark quirky world.
