Bellamy is definitely the only heroine I’d completely connected with. She’s a girl who’s struggling with anxiety. She has only one friend and two imaginary characters she wrote about who helped her get through the lonely days. This girl was lonely. She felt like no one was understanding her, she had really deep fears of going out in public and doing „social activities”. However, we see her blossoming. Slowly, she learns to do what she wants not caring about the others. She learns to let go of old things. She learns to be herself. I was so proud of her, of how strong she was. Nothing was holding her back. Bellamy is definitely my all time favorite heroine and I love how the author wrote everything from her point of view. Her emotional development is obvious and at the end of the book, we get a Bellamy who is proud of her roots, one who is ready fora new beginning.
Caleb was a character I never thought I’d get to love this much. First glimpse we get of him is a really mean and asshole-y version of him. I seriously thought „how the hell will I like this guy?”. And guess what? I freaking adore him! Once you look into him, once you see him through Bellamy’s eyes, once you learn about him you fucking love him! I admired him so much. He was also a struggling man. One who despite all his looks, all his money, all his praise, at the end of the day he was lonely too. He was used to people looking at him and seeing somebody else. He was..scared to follow his dreams, scared of what others might think of him. Even his best friend had moments when he didn’t understand Caleb or judged him.
We get to see two persons who get really close, who support each other and inspire each other to be who and what they want to be. After all those years of pretending, they’re finally ready to be who they’ve always dreamed to be.
I liked how Bellamy didn’t make Caleb apologize when he came back to her. She was upset and hurt but in the end she understood that he needed time. Just like she needed time after she left for college. I seriously cried my ass off when she goes back home. I don’t know, maybe because I’ve been away for a long time too and just like Bellamy, I don’t have a deep connection with my parents. It was really sweet and heart-warming to see how her parents welcomed her back.
This book woke a lot of feelings inside of me. These two characters were more than just two fictional persons from a book. I felt like I knew them all along. And it was lovely to ride with them. Give this a try! You won’t regret it.
I read the author’s ending note and being my first read of her/him, I have to say I was really impressed. Guess what, author? You fucking did it!
