Masashi Kishimoto (岸本斉史 Kishimoto Masashi) is a Japanese manga artist, well known for creating the manga series Naruto. His younger twin brother, Seishi Kishimoto, is also a manga artist and creator of the manga series O-Parts Hunter (666 Satan) and Blazer Drive. Two of his former assistants, Osamu Kajisa (Tattoo Hearts) and Yuuichi Itakura (Hand's), have also gone on to moderate success following their work on Naruto.

Kishimoto's first work as a manga artist was Karakuri (カラクリ?), which he submitted to Shueisha in 1995. This earned him the Weekly Shōnen Jump's monthly "Hop Step Award" in 1996, granted to promising new manga artists. This was followed in 1997 by a pilot version of Naruto (NARUTO-ナルト-), published in Akamaru Jump Summer. In 1998, Kishimoto premiered as a Weekly Shōnen Jump artist with a serialized version of Karakuri in Weekly Shōnen Jump, but it proved unpopular and was canceled soon after. In 1999, a serialized version of Naruto began publication in Weekly Shōnen Jump and quickly became a hit.

Again, I’m going to preface this with the statement that it’s hard to not a love a book from my favorite series about my favorite character. And I always love hearing more about a character’s backstory.

But again, the relationships in this book were a disaster. Aside from Shisui and Izumi, Kakashi was introduced who Itachi paints into a mentor that he can finally trust and yet the two have very few moments together in the book. And Danzo, a man that Itachi is said to loathe, Itachi actually seems pretty indifferent towards. It’s… aggravating to say the least.

I also noticed some minor retconning of events, but I won’t focus on that too much as they didn’t drastically alter things. In the end, Itachi is still one of my favorite characters and my only disappointment is that I felt like these books could have been so much more than they were.

“鼬迈向死亡的旅程,将从这里开始。”
When the book ended with a forced semblance of hope and resignation that from now on our main character is living to die eventually, it knocks all thoughts out of my already numbed brain; this is hands down the most depressing read I've experienced. You know how spoilers/ foreknowledge usually takes the suspense out of the plot, and since you knew what's about to go down, the kick doesn't feel as painful... Wrong assumption. In this case, precisely because I knew what would happen, it made every flip excruciating and tenuous. Just as I was anticipating the day of The Mission and his impending "betrayal," I found myself having to continue the book in multiple sittings, indulging in self-delusion that as long as I don't progress, his peaceful days in Konoha can be prolonged.

It ended eventually, however reluctantly.

As with the previous Shinden, it is divided into 3 chapters (with even more sombre chap. titles), but unlike its forerunner, we are greeted with familiar materials from both the manga and anime, at least during the initial reading. While a great deal of the book was dedicated to the imminent coup d'état, it also elaborated on what we already knew, like the origin of Shisui's Mangekyou Sharingan, and supplemented on gaps between events or portions altogether left out in both anime and manga, like the preparation works of the coup d'état and Danzo's role in the massacre. These are just the tip of the iceberg - the novel offered sooo much details and answered questions that crossed my mind at some point during the anime - why was Itachi's forehead protector slanted the night before he fled Konoha, has anyone wondered that?

The best part is since Itachi is the MC, we were privy to Itachi's train of thoughts that clarified his actions and spoken words - I'm referring to his "outburst" during the confrontation with Fukaku's "trusted men" outside his house. For instance, I've always assumed that he was setting the stage, prepping his villain image in front of his clansmen, rather than considering it was his pent up frustrations at their obsession with overthrowing the village, and they had broken his last straw. Even I am guilty of charge to Itachi's paraoxysm - I was swept away by Itachi's cool and collected image and failed to consider that he might be just holding everything back. Silence doesn't always equates consent or concede.

Can you believe after the novel ended, despite all the elaborations, there were still so much more to Itachi that are left unanswered? That's also because it completely cut off his Akatsuki days, which I was dying to find out and assumed it's covered in this novel...

The bonus scenes for me were his interactions with Naruto, and suggesting to be best friends with Naruto to Sasuke... And of course Izumi, that "lover" that Madara causally mentioned but never quite elaborated. Her appearance in his life and the tragically beautiful way she passed on only confirmed Itachi's Godly status and how he is bound to live a life of solitude and remain untouchable... Regardless, I was content there was even a 'She' in his life. These pockets of peace and taken for granted idyllic moments are probably the only times I didn't feel something stinging at the back of my eyes...

You know what's the hardest part to stomach? His regrets. His utterly honest, human, pitiful last minute regrets. "If only I..." "I should have..." When someone who has worked as hard as he did still constantly felt disappointed with his incompetence and shortcomings, doesn't it once again prove hard work does not necessarily yield repayment?

Oh boy did I tear so bad.

The only reason I didn't offer a 5 star rating is because of how cruel Kishimoto has treated Itachi.

May Itachi's gentle spirit live on forever in everyone's mind and soul.

"I will be a Konohagakure ninja until I die" -Itachi

-------------------------------------------
Itachi pursues his dream of becoming the first Uchiha Hokage and rid this world from fighting. But he has to take action upon the impending doom in Konoha...or his clan. Alright, in short, Danzo and Hiruzen [the Third Hokage] fucked up until Itachi had to choose where his loyalty lies: in Konoha or the Uchiha clan. And we know that until his very end, no matter where he went, his hope of becoming a Hokage may be gone, Itachi remained a ninja of Konohagakure.

{Even if you don't watch naruto you should read it here's why}
The failures of adults, discrimination, hatred, the concept of good and evil are the main premise covered in this book. The most important quality observed is loyalty. To what end would you go for the sake of your beliefs and principles? Would you forsake your morality and humanity for the sake of your beliefs? All these concepts were beautifully discussed in both books. The author did a brilliant job in illustrating Itachi's descent on how a boy filled with hope slowly gets darkened by the corruption of society. Such a heartbreaking tale of a reluctant hero that deserves so much more. Such a heartwrenching book. I regret nothing. I feel like this is the kind of book that will make you think a lot about humanity and society. Trust me, it will make you stare at the ceiling for hours. No words can describe my love for this book and for both Uchiha Itachi and Uchiha Shisui, and an honourable mention, Hatake Kakashi.

The two quotes that will stay with me for the longest time;

"What's truly terrifying is not enormous evil. It's the little evil nesting in the hearts of people".

"Only the truly strong can see the weakness in the hearts of people, take in their evil feelings, and continue to live despite that".

I absolutely adore this book and the author deserve so much recognition for being the first to perfectly address the lack of humanity and kindness in the village, Konoha. Definitely will buy a physical copy because both books are so worth rereading.

The best anti hero I've ever read and known.

I really love Itachi, he is the one who gives up everything for his brother and konoha, his pride, his honor, his job, his family, his lover, his brother, his friends. There's no enough words to describe how awesome and inspiring is Itachi Uciha. The best character villain ever!!!!! His story is really sad, but memorable for me.

“You should stay true to your thinking. Fight, be confused, be lost, and come through that to find your answer. And once you find it, make your decision, and do not waver from it. Find your answer, and be ready to follow through. That is determination”.

This was a really good continuation of the first book. I like that they chose to expand more on Itachi’s character. He’s really enjoyable to read about for me. I also liked Danzo’s portrayal. Can’t wait to read the next one in the new year!

(4.0-4.5 rounded up)

Part Two of “Itachi’s Story” picks up immediately after Part 1 ended (with Itachi joining the ANBU Black Ops) and finishing right after Itachi finishes committing his most heinous act which would cast a long shadow over the main “Naruto” story. Once again I maintain Itachi’s Story should have been one single book to cover Itachi’s pre-Akatsuki life and if there had to be a Part II, have that cover his time with the Akatsuki (thereby showing interactions like his initial partnership with Kisame). And that’s the thing about Part II, unlike with Part I I wanted to see this story continue.

The writing is still the same quality with the occasional weaknesses in structure and content (I wish they had kept the anime flashback where Itachi sees Might Guy in action and develops a respect for Guy/wariness about fighting him in the future). But in general I thought the cloak and dagger content and the tension between Itachi, the Village, and his family/clan was a lot more interesting. Plus the action was well structured/easy to follow, particularly the infamous Uchiha Massacre as we see several of Itachi’s takedowns of ringleaders of the planned coup. Beyond that, I felt like I was able to connect more emotionally with Part II than in Part I with many of the tragic moments like Itachi’s interactions with Shisui and his final conversation with his parents. Then there’s bittersweet moments like Itachi’s merciful killing of Izami, granting her a vision of a lifetime of the two of them together before letting her die peacefully. And of course there’s the occasional heartwarming parts, certainly his scenes with Sasuke before *that* one, but I also adored the scene of Itachi interacting with kid Naruto and secretly feeling bad for Naruto’s situation and heartened by Naruto’s dream to be Hokage despite everything that happened to Naruto. No surprise I liked this inclusion because I adore Itachi’s and Naruto’s interactions elsewhere in the franchise.

While as a whole not as great as I wanted this miniseries to be, Part II of “Itachi’s Story” was more in line with what I was hoping for. It’s a nice enough expansion to what the main Naruto series has done with Itachi Uchiha so it’s certainly worth checking out if you are a Naruto fan.

I was excited when itachi first appeared in naruto and I liked him before knowing the truth about him by obito, i loved his whole life from the beginning up until his death!and knowing how he killed izumi really broke my heart!

Also Shisui is so underrated he deserves much better in naruto and also itachi, they were abused by an act and a decision made by herozin and danzo and forced itachi to do the annihilation himself!💔i hated the third hokage more in this novel!

Will another story make me weep like a baby as much as this one did? Probably not.
Will I ever love a character as much as I love Uchiha Itachi? I highly doubt it.
Kishimoto tied up politics, philosophy, ethics and war into this brilliant story that shatters you into little pieces.
I relive this story everytime and I don’t think I will ever recover from it.

I enjoyed this second volume as much as volume 1, but it was SO heartbreaking to reread some of the interactions Itachi had with Sasuke in the manga but this time from Itachi’s pov and with his inner monologue. I cried a lot, Itachi is one of my favorite characters and it was so tragic to see the pain he was in through all of his decisions. I feel like the context these two novel volumes give is really important to understanding the scenes in the manga regarding what led to the choices Itachi made T-T and then it was really nice to see so much content about his relationship with Shisui too!

I bought this book because I wanted to figure out why Itachi had to resort to THAT. Was there really no other way?

The Konoha officials didn't even negotiate properly with the Uchiha. Working on the assumption that someone from the Uchiha clan had summoned the Kyuubi, they had crushed the spirit of the Uchiha clan. That's what happens under a dictatorial leadership and Hiruzen let it happen! Not only was the Third Hokage an idiot, but he was also a doormat.

I hate Danzo even more now. I didn't know it was possible to hate a fictional character so much. I want to strangle him for what he did to Shisui. Greed is an unforgivable sin. Did he really want peace? If the Uchiha clan had figured out who had killed Shisui, there would have been a civil war in Konoha. Was his desire for Mangekyo Sharingan more powerful than his desire for peace? And he was the one who told everyone about Kyuubi! What did he achieve by directing the villager's anger towards a child? If everyone knew, what was the point of naming him Uzumaki? Baka!

The way Itachi dealt with Izumi was heart-wrenching. To think Itachi could have had a normal life. I'm getting depressed just thinking about it.

Th-they won’t forgive you, Itachi.” Those were Tekka’s last words.
Itachi turned his back on the body, and sheathed his sword. “I wasn’t asking for forgiveness.”

3.5 estrellas

I really loved this book and I finished it in a single day. I really hated Hiruzen Sarutobi even if he was a leader he didn't take a step to get to the root of the problems the clan was facing. He totally failed as a leader. Even after certain signs that were severe warning he still took no effort to look into it. Also Fugaku Uchiha wasn't able to control his coup or take into consideration of the things that would have happened if the coup took place. He didn't take into consideration the clan's short fall. This book do show that having leaders who are not fully committed or aware to the happening around also not accepting the problems exist hiding it rather, can lead to severe consequences that everyone has to face.

I can't remember the last time I cried reading a novel. I was crying the whole time that moment when Danzo took Shisui's eye and later Shisui was killed by Itachi, awakening his Mangekyo Sharingan.
Uchiha Itachi has become my favorite character now. Itachi had no way to save his clan. I still wonder if anything could've happened if that shit 3rd Hokage had actually done something regarding the clan's dissatisfaction towards the village. And I'm glad that Sasuke killed Danzo later on in the manga. Danzo played too well leaving Itachi with no choice.
I enjoyed this spin-off novel of Uchiha Itachi.

You know what, this book didn't make me like Itachi more than before BUT it gave me an insight in him as one of the best written characters in the manga.

Itachi HATED his clan and the last chapter, THE night, express it. Obviously he is still a child and now, he is stuck with his choice for ever.

In Daylight, the author went over the upbringing of the Uchiha prodigy and how he thrived through ranks and proved himself and stood out among nearly everyone Shinobi in the village at the time

Just as the title says, Midnight features nothing but the depth of the darkness that invaded Itachi’s soul at such a young age
So in comparison to Daylight, this volume is way darker
The first few chapters were talking about the mission Itachi was given in order to get accepted into the Anbu Black Ops
It features Itachi’s first serious combat experience and the clash between Konoha’s strongest kekkei genkai Dōjutsu, the Byakugan Vs the Sharingan in a really interesting fight

We dove deep down into Itachi’s internal conflicts and how torn he was between ensuring the village’s safety over pleasing his clan and his father
This volume showcases the political opinions that Itachi had grown to develop and adapt, flying away from the nest and becoming the total opposite of his father to be a young man with a wider look on the bigger picture and preferring to do the unthinkable for the greater good
And with how much Itachi was drifting away from his clanmates and his own kind, he got suspected of betrayal and accused of disloyalty causing his own clan to start monitoring him closely looking for any flaw in his perfect facade
As if danzo’s orders weren’t enough, his clan started monitoring him alongside the root shinobi who was assigned to watch over Itachi since he graduated the academy at 7 years old
He was watched up close like an insect under a telescope for the majority of his life in Konoha, the higher ups wanted nothing but to use him for their advantage
Nobody saw him like a promising Shinobi but rather as an easy solution for their years old dilemma (ending the uchiha’s rebellion once and for all)

This volume exhibits the conflicted nature of his relationships with his family
Starting with the way his father always treated him like an adult when he was a mere child, the way his father forced his flawed logic and beliefs on him from a young age, to the way his father accepted the truth and stopped trying to compete with his own son

“It’s not as though everyone in the clan thinks the same way. I have no intention of forcing our thinking on you. Rather than a stone drifting along with the strong current, I want you to be a man, like a rock that stands against the current, and pierces it.”
His father had accepted the fact that his older son was different, the polar opposite from him and the rest of the clan yet he still tried desperately to show Itachi the fatherly love he has been depriving his own son of, but it was too late at this point

Not to mention his relationship with his mother, she was a loving woman but she was also an Uchiha Jonin .. she shared the same views and beliefs as his father but she still loved him and Sasuke unconditionally, even at the end when he raised his blade on them .. it was stated that if him and his father clashed blades, she would sacrifice herself to protect Itachi

And most importantly, Sasuke .. the one person Itachi adored and loved more than his conflicted mind could register
He cared for Sasuke as if he was his own and not just his baby brother, even at times where his father would yell at him his only concern was that he hoped the loud voice wouldn’t wake up Sasuke from his slumber
Despite the negative emotions Sasuke might’ve developed due to their father constantly comparing him to his older brother, Sasuke adored Itachi as well .. always wanting to spend time with him and following his footsteps in hopes of a bright future where the two of them could be leaf Shinobis together and protecting their village as an unstoppable force

After a lot of debates on what exactly happened during the massacre’s night, this volume was enough to answer every question asked since the beginning of naruto
There isn’t a thing such as “NonCanon” or “Canon” in Japan, as long as the creator himself approved on the story and illustrated the cover himself, It IS Canon despite there being some minor differences from the manga and the anime, keeping in mind that the anime itself was out after the Two Novels
So last but not least, what happened at that night was cruel .. but at least it was shown clearly in the Novels
Obito Uchiha, known as Madara Uchiha to Itachi during that time was the one who helped Itachi to complete the Massacre
Offering to take care of the woman and children in spite of revenge and no other, him and Itachi finally reached an agreement where Itachi said he’d take care of everyone else
Itachi started with Izumi Uchiha, the girl who obviously had romantic feeling towards him despite their relationship being something even less than friendship and Itachi being emotionally unavailable for most of his life
He went to her house first, finishing off her mother first then her after he had trapped her in a genjutsu using his Tsukuyomi where she’d live a happy life with her as a married couple with kids and die after a long life out of old age
This shows how much he still cared for people he loved him despite his circumstances
And right after, he had gone to finish his father’s subordinate .. Tekka Uchiha, Yashiro Uchiha and Inabi Uchiha either with their wives or alone to whom who lived by themselves
He was merely preforming his duty to Konoha but honestly speaking, his heart was filled with anger and disdain to those three since they so shamelessly accused him of killing his only friend one day after the news broke that Shisui Uchiha had committed suicide

And finally, after he had completed his part of the deal alongside Obito, he waited patiently for his baby brother to come back home so he could finish the cruel mission given to him, killing his own blood and flesh .. his parents
It was a tough act to put, to kill your own parents at the tender age of 12 (which is a huge misconception given that most people believe his killed the clan at 13, but his public age was raised a year to prevent suspicions in the village) and to act like you’ve gone mad in front of your beloved brother, bullying him and hurting him so he could develop a power greater than yours .. it was a fate even the strongest of Shinobi’s would crumble under

The mission was done, and his duty was preformed, and he was now a Rogue Ninja outcasted from his home and his people after his sacrifice to the village
Despite being that young, Itachi still had a clear vision of what he’d do next
He’d protect Konoha from the Shadows and accept the hate and contempt from every Shinobi in the world who had heard of what happened to the Uchihas
Itachi joined the Akatsuki with Obito Uchiha and Orochimaru, aiming to keep a close eye on them and protect Konoha until his final day came
The day where his baby brother would kill him and punish him for all his crimes .. the crime of wanting peace.

This is the second and final book in a story detailing a side character from the more significant anime/manga franchise "naruto". this book starts right where the last book left off where Itachi and his good friend are tasked with killing a high-ranking leaf ninja for leaking classified information to other villages. This mission causes eleven-year-old Itachi to be promoted to the Anbu special operations. At this point, the Uchiha clan has very little loyalty to the village and is in the early stages of planning a coup d' etat. Itachi however hated fighting and with his clan being the aggressors he was starting to side with the village. itachi's next mission under the anbu is to monitor hidden cameras in the Uchiha hideout for any signs of a coup d'etat. as he is viewing these cameras he notices a masked figure for a split second and Itachi believes him to be Madara Uchiha a rouge ninja who left the village years ago. at the various meetings held by the Uchiha clan Itachi is questioned about what he is doing in the Anbu Itachi tries not to say anything for fear that will cause the clan to be madder at the village. with Itachi not answering many people grow mad and suspicious. After Itachi and shisui meet they discuss and shisui tells him that the clan wants him to spy on Itachi they also found out that at the next meeting, the clan will decide if they will follow through with a coup d'etat. Shisui plans to use his secret ocular ability on Fugaku the leader of the Uchiha right before the meeting to stop the coup. on the day of the meeting, shisui is called to Danzo the head of the anbu's office, here Danzo shows he knows all of Shisui's plans and decides that shisui's ability would be better suited in his hands. Danzo successfully takes one of his eyes and shisui quickly limps off to the secret meeting place to talk with Itachi. Itachi expects to see Shisui later because Shisui was supposed to be at the meeting but shisui is poisoned and missing one eye tells Itachi what happened and tells Itachi to kill him by pushing him off the cliff. Itachi refuses as Shisui is his only friend but Shisui assures him he will die from the poison soon before getting up to stand on the edge he takes out his last eye and gives it to Itachi and tells him to protect the village before Itachi pushes Shisui to his death. This causes Itachi's eyes to mature into their final state the "Mangekyo Sharingan". Because the plan failed the clan is set to execute the coup in ten days and Itachi informs the third Hokage (the leader of the village). Danzo meets with Itachi shortly after and tells him that the third Hokage won't do anything and that the only way for this to work is if Itachi eliminates the entire clan before the coup, and Itachi takes the mission. he then meets with Madara Uchiha and asks for help with the mission while also protecting Itachi's little brother Sasuke. then comes the night of the Uchiha massacre and they both successfully take out all of the Uchiha clan and the village names him as a mass murderer, a criminal, and a rouge ninja so the public doesn't believe the village had anything to do with it. Itachi stays loyal to the village and decides to join a big criminal organization and report back to the village leaders.

There are many wonderful passages in this book but one in particular is "There were two auras in the room. As if lured by them, Itachi walked down the familiar hallway without taking his shoes off. Immediately after opening the door, he saw the figures of his parents sitting together. He stood behind them soundlessly.“I see. So you sided with them,” his father said in a controlled voice, without turning around. In his voice was a philosophical tone, as though he had understood everything.“Dad ...” Itachi was surprised at himself for automatically calling his father that. He had called him “Father” since the time he graduated from the academy. It was a distinction he then, that name had gradually become natural, and he forgot even that he had ever called him “Dad.”Why would he use that old way of referring to his father now? When I was little ... Back then, when there weren’t the obligations of the clan, the contradiction of the village, the loneliness, the discouragement; back when his feelings about his family could be simple, might have been the happiest time in Itachi’s life. And now that the parting with his family was before him, he was yearning for those old days.“Mom ...” We understand, Itachi.” Her voice was kind, understanding everything, and still trying to envelop him in a hug.“Itachi,” his father said. “Promise me one thing.” His voice was straightforward, containing not a hint of resentment. “Take care of Sasuke.”They both understand everything ... He felt it instinctively, and the feelings he had suppressed since parting with Izumi bubbled back to life. His father and mother understood everything: how much Itachi had suffered and struggled, and also the fact that this had most certainly not been an easy decision. On top of that, they were going to quietly accept the fate that had befallen them. His father hadn’t the slightest intention of crossing blades with his son. And if his father had turned his sword on him, his mother would have given her own life to protect Itachi. The love they felt for the son who was about to kill them radiated from them. Why didn’t I realize it sooner ... Why did it have to come to this" (Pages 168-169)I love this part of the book and it is so sad, Itachi is forced to kill both his parents and his girlfriend and kill off all of his emotions. The decision to take out the clan was so hard because Itachi had to not only kill his parents but he had to be painted as the bad guy and forced his brother who he loved more than himself to hate him and never talk to him again.

I feel that anyone who enjoys action/fiction books would love this book. Also, anyone who has previously read or watched the naruto series would really like to read this book. This was one of my favorite reads and I am so glad I got to finish I am never too emotionally gripped by books but this story makes me tear up thinking about it and I would recommend it a hundred times over.
