Education in the U.S. has gone down hill. And it's because of teacher's unions and the politicians. Teachers are not given the freedom to really teach and adapt to the kids in their classes. They are constricted by standardized testing and the higher ups who take most of the money for education instead of being concerned about what is best for the children. This is a good read about the need for competition and accountability in our schools. Schools and teachers need to be accountable to the parents and children their school serves - not to unions and politicians - the way it was in the old days. Parents should be involved in their kids' educations. We need to make changes in this country. This was a good read about possibilities.

Gaschler pioneered one of the first charter schools in CA. This book discusses some of the obstacles he has had to (and continues to have to) overcome in order create schools that put the children's needs first.

This book is a must for anyone who has a child in a charter school or who has ever thought about putting them in one. It is important to be aware of different tactics that bureaucracy use to try and control "the people" :)

I appreciate his passion for wanting children to be life-long learners.
