Powerful characters and themes combined with well plotted murders make this a must read series for any mystery fan. Meet Rossalyn Channing, recent widow of a decorated war hero Marine. Along with her 13 year son, Ryan, she has left the military base they lived on and moved to small town life in Chatsworth, Illinois. Opening Hawg Heaven, an eatery that features pork products and motorcycle decor, she is determined to forge forward with their lives. When a nationally famous TV show comes to town to film segments of their antique hunting treasures show, Rossalyn hooks them up with a friend who has two huge barns full of desirable items. When the crew's camera man is found murdered after he went to scout out the location and Rossalyn's elderly friend has a heart attack when he finds the body she is determined to find out what happened. Dangerous suspects bring turmoil that threatens her son's safety and her life. This delightful series features a strong, focused woman who knows her fears and works to overcome them. The cafe setting and menu make for some mouth watering moments, while the murder plots take you down some thrilling and chilling paths. A series which highlights themes that are very relevant in today's world while giving us an edge of the seat adventure make this a must read.

When Rossalyn Channing moved to the small town of Chatsworth, Illinois to open her restaurant, Hawg Heaven, she thought her life and the life of her son, Ryan, would be peaceful and uncomplicated. Even though they made some good friends and the restaurant is doing brilliantly things have been a bit complicated. A young woman was murdered just as she opened the restaurant and now a short time later a second murder has occured. Rossalyn has only been in town a few months and murder is complicated especially when the sheriff of the town, Buckley Willis, thinks you are the murderer.

A day or so before the murder a television crew from a popular television show, Treasure Hunt USA, came into the restaurant for breakfast. They asked Rossalyn if she knew of any place in town where they might find some old antiques and collectables to feature on the show. Rossalyn told them to speak to Franz Hellman who had some barns on his property that were filled with antiques.

A cameraman went to the Hellman property before the rest of the crew to take an early look at what the television program might be interested in. It was in one of the barns where he was stabbed to death. But why would anyone want to kill a stranger to the town and who would do it?

Sheriff Willis thinks that Rossalyn is the murderer because she told the television crew about the barns but the sheriff never did care for Rossalyn and blames her for everything bad that happens in Chatsworth.

The thing is, the real murderer is running loose and there are quite a few suspects including a man who was living on the Hellman property doing handyman work for Mr. Hellman; the sole woman on the television crew, Stella Castle, who was in love with the cameraman but was heard arguing with the man before his death; a newly hired employee of Rossalyn's, Garrett Marshall, who was recently released from jail; and Rossalyn’s next door neighbor, Tom Hundman, an ex military man who rides a motorcycle around town and is very big and intimidating.

As Rossalyn tries to figure things out someone causes some severe damage to her restaurant making her think she is close to finding out who the murderer is but it also frightens her when she thinks that harm might come to her son, Ryan.

“Baby Back Murder” is the second in the Hawg Heaven Cozy Culinary Mystery Series by author Summer Prescott. Just like the first book this novel is fun, filled with good characters, and has a good murder mystery. Most of the regular characters returns to help Rossalyn solve the murder and help her out in every way possible. They’re also there to help eat all the comfort foods she serves in Hawg Heaven.

Easy to read and very faced-paced, every cozy-lover, mystery reader will enjoy visiting Chatsworth, Illinois and sampling the food and friendship that is served up daily in this nice cozy series.

Another Top-Quality Winner In a First-Rate Series: Can't Wait For the Next Installment …

Once again – and not the least bit surprising – phenomenally talented author Summer Prescott delivers yet another winning read that proves why she is one of the absolute most naturally gifted and talented authors currently riding in the culinary cozy mystery genre today. Continuing the story of widowed Marine wife Rossalyn ("Rossi") Channing, owner of Hawg Heaven, the motorcycle-themed café specializing in all things pork-related in honor of her late husband killed in the line of duty while serving his country faithfully in Afghanistan, Baby Back Murder tells the story of what happens when the crew of a popular TV show happens into her diner while filming there program in a nearby town. Led by a tip given them by Rossi herself, the television treasure hunters find themselves out at Franz's barns in search of potential treasures for their show. While there, one of the crewmembers happens upon a hidden secret that ultimately costs him his life. Before long, heroin Rossi Channing once more finds herself unexpectedly and unintentionally entangled in yet another potential murder investigation which puts her, her teenage son Ryan, and her café in potentially grave danger yet again…

As with Patriots Passing, the first book in Summer Prescott's phenomenal Hawg Heaven series, Baby Back Murder combines a welcome host of unique and interesting characters both old and new, a gripping and engrossing plotline chock full of twists and turns, perfect pacing as the story unfolds, and all the awesome and amazing writing talent and storytelling abilities that make long-time readers of this fantastic author keep coming back for more. From the first page to the last, this is one book you will not be able to put down. I've read it twice already, and both times I did so in a single sitting because I found it to be so engrossing and captivating that I simply could not stop reading until the very end.

With high levels of suspense and page-turning excitement, yet without any of the graphic violence or sexual content that could potentially turn off some readers, Baby Back Murder is both Summer Prescott and culinary cozy mysteries at their absolute and undeniable best. Whether you happen to be a long time fan of this amazing author or newcomer to her fiction, both baby back murder and the Hawg Heaven series as a whole are the perfect introduction (or return visit) to this multi-talented writer. Or, if you just happen to be proud to be an American, then this is one book you absolutely must read – I guarantee it…

Book 2 Hawg Heaven. Too Short. Too much carelessness

Baby Back Murder is book 2 of the series. Although it’s a stand-alone, it would be helpful to read book one so that the reader gets a better picture of the backstory. This book is about 100 pages shorter than book one.

I enjoyed this book but there were some big mistakes in this one. For being such a short book, the author, proofreaders and editors really should have picked up these -

Examples:

There’s a whole paragraph where Ryan (the son) is referred to as Sam.

Another off point for me is the police wondering if Tom will be able to describe the mystery woman he chased off Rossi’s property. Of course he would, he had an encounter with her the previous day.

There’s also quite a bit of typos, (thought instead of though). These types of mistakes take away from being able to read the story fluidly, IMO.

I recommend the book if you are a reader that can oversee this type of carelessness.
I will read the rest of the books, mainly because I have Kindle Unlimited and I can read for free. I would not pay for them.

Summer, you’ve done it again! You wrote another great book. I admire you so much. I just love these small town reads. The characters are real to me and make me want to live in towns just like they do. I like that Rossie has made a friend out of the unlikeliest man, Tom. Rossie is always protected when Tom is near.
Every book Summer has written that I’ve read has made me so happy. Thanks!

Next is Book 3, “Nacho Usual Murder”. lol. I tell that to people when they get all up in my business, I say, “It’s nacho business,” or, “That’s nunya biz!”

I am excited too because book 7 was just released today in Summer’s Farm Fresh Cozy Mysteries series. That book is called “Fully Vetted,” which I’ll add is another great series!

“Baby Back Murder”, second in the 'Hawg Heaven Cosy Culinary Mystery' series, follows on immediately after “Patriot's Passing”.
Again it is a professionally written, by the numbers, cosy mystery.
It pushes all the right buttons but reads as if the author isn't really putting much effort into it.
A TV show has come to town and Rosalyn helpfully points out an out of the way barn full of interesting collectibles.
She's a Jonah! When a cameraman goes out to do some prep work he's murdered.
'Mountainous' Tom is still around, as is 'handsome' police officer Morgan (Rosalyn, of course, is above noticing because of her newly-widowed status).
It's the kind of book that would be ideal for a beach read as it is easy to dip in and out.
3 Stars.

Ribs with a side of corn bread and murder

After the death of her husband Rossalyn moves with her son, Ryan to a small town and opens a restaurant. Unfortunately, the safe small town atmosphere she is seeking is marred by two murders.

This is the second book in this series and I love it. The characters are people I would love to sit and talk with. And again in this book I honestly didn't guess who had done it until the end.

Rossalyn Channing is excited when the stars of a collectables-hunting TV show come to town, and she tells them about a guy she knows who has a couple of barns of old stuff. Before you know it, their cameraman turns up dead. I have to say there were so many unpleasant characters in this book that I'd never want to end up in this town! Even Rossie has her nasty moments. The mystery part was interesting, which is the only reason I kept reading.

Hawg Heaven isn't a quiet plqce

If it's not one thing it's another. Going about her new life adjusting to being a widow & single mom a murder happens. Of course the sheriff got a disliking for her and accuses her of being the killer because she recommended the place where the murder happened. Tom is great scary but great! Onto book 3!

Excellent Mystery

Ms. Prescott keeps getting better and better. The only problem with that is I don’t want to do anything but read until I find out whodunit and why. Also, I crave bacon and BBQ and all things pork as i read. Well done!

An Impressive follow up!

Summer Prescott has done it again! I loved the first book in her new series but this book has left has left me speechless. There is no doubt she is a talented writer but her skills really shine in this new series. The characters are simply amazing with a great story to tie them together. The small town is the perfect setting and it never surprises me with all of the drama and mayhem. You expect this small down to be boring and quiet and it's anything but. I love how the book could easily be read as a stand alone but is so much better after having read the previous book. Although it helps to get to know the characters and their story, it adds a lot to the book and makes you feel like you are building a relationship, and while this is true, at the same time each story is introduced, developed and concluded in the book while still leaving readers looking for more. Despite the murder, the book has a feeling of hopefullness. Very well written.

I love stories in small towns and this one is wonderful. It is just after Thanksgiving and Rossalyn Channing's new restaurant, Hawg Heaven, is doing great business. A news team from one of Rossalyn's favorite TV shows stops by on their way through town and asks her about anything interesting in her town that might be worthy of filming. When one of the camera men is found dead at the spot Rossalyn told them about, she becomes the number one suspect. With the help of friends, she tries to clear her name. I love the relationship Rossalyn has with her son and the strength her son shows in the wake of his father's death. I can't wait to see what the next book has to tell us!

After Thanksgiving Rossalyn Channing's new restaurant, Hawg Heaven, is doing great business. When Rossalyn's favorite antique hunting tv shows stops by they ask her if their is any good places to pick over she sends them out to a older gentlemans place where she had been to buy decor for Hawg Heaven. But when the cameraman is found dead at the spot Rossalyn told them about, she becomes the number one suspect. With a little help from her new friends and employees she clears her name and starts really finding out what small town camaraderie is like. Her and Ryan are also starting to feel like they are making her husband/dad proud of what they are doing after him passing away.

After dealing with a murder and getting things back to normal at her new restaurant Rossie hopes to finally because party of the small town where she is trying to recover from her husband's death. Everything seems to be calming down until a national TV show crew shows up on her doorstep and everything goes crazy.

Loved the feel of small town with everyone trying to help her even though she is new to town. I definitely hope Summer continues this series. I absolutely love it.

For some reason the minor characters were really getting on my nerves. I know that's a bit random, but every time I tried to sit down and write this review, it was the first thing that popped into my head. Other than that it was a great book. I'm normally not overly fond of super emotional books, but this series does a pretty good job of showing grieving realistically.
