The Rocketeer High Flying Adventures!!! Cliff Secord and the gang are at it again! Be it saving Betty from disastrous movie sets, to fighting off Nazis in the world war, you’ll see the Rocketeer soaring through clouds at top speed! Dave Steven’s legacy is being carried on the soldiers of great writers and artists today. We have Kurt Busiek, Darwyn Cooke, Dave Gibbons, Marc Guggenheim, Walter Simonson, Bruce Timm, Stan Sakai, J. Bone, John Byrne, Matt Wagner, and more! These guys maintain the action, goofiness, and the American patriotism which the Rocketeer is known for. You could really feel the 1940’s days between the pages of this book. It’s a light fun read between the heavy dark stuff in comics.
Now this is a compilation of many stories and I really am not going to talk about each individual, because this book lies to you.
The Rocketeer was an amazing concept that sadly was never finished.
This compilation supposedly is a continuation of short stories from the main plot, this is a lie. This here is just a random compilation of random stories that don't have any sequence with each other, be it style, structure or even plot.
I'm not saying they’re bad, I just say that this is false advertisement.
For the stories by themselves, most of them are fun and I recommend them. But other than that. If you are not familiar with the character, better look away.
This series is the definition of the term “a murderer’s row”, in this case of comic creators. Never have I read a comic with this much top-tier talent. The anthology aspect of the series also allows for a wide variety of styles and tones to the subject matter. What ultimately holds this comic back is the shortness of the stories, which sometimes allow the story little space to breathe in the plot.
Excellent short stories, only a few stood out that were sub par. Recommended and worth buying, but I'll seen a used copy because the hard cover price point is a bit much.
A collection of short stories. There's a nice mix of styles in the art and plots. When the focus is on adventure, it's good. When it comes to Cliff being a possessive, jealous jerk I zoned out. He's rather awful even for a guy who is supposed to be from the 1940s.
