a comprehensive overview of canada's natives past and present. too dense for consecutive reading too succinct to be a standalone reference work but just right as a jumping-off point for someone casually interested. i wish the indian act had been given its own chapter instead of just being put in with the chapter about contemporary issues but oh well. i understand that this book has been republished in an updated form under a new title so maybe it gets more attention in that one
