It is not surprising that Jodi Picoult’s novel Small Great Things became a best-seller. Ruth, an African-American nurse, tends to a newborn white child against the parents’ wishes, and the child dies suddenly. The discovery that Ruth was present at the time of the baby’s death provides the conflict that gives Small Great Things its amazing potential. Outstanding and timely. I felt as if current events could be coming directly from this story...or vice versa. I will be thinking about it for quite awhile.
This book provides a very high level overview. With a very precise clear summation and excellent character analysis. It is a short quick read. It can be beneficial in determining if the book is a must read.
Small Great Things kept me interested from the first page to the last. It's Jodi Picoult's best book in awhile, in my opinion. The topic was timely, as well -- racism. As with most of Picoult's books, there is a twist at the end.
Excellent book. It addresses an issue that others feel uncomfortable to discuss. I was very interested to see why Jodi Piccoult chose this topic as her story. Her notes at the end were very thoughtful and provoking. I would recommend this book to everyone to read so they can look within themselves to examine how they would handle such a situation.
