जयशंकर प्रसाद जहाँ उच्चकोटि के कवि थे, वहीं अच्छे कहानीकार भी थे। उनके पाँच कहानी-संग्रह प्रकाशित हुए जिन्होंने न सिर्फ हिन्दी कथा-साहित्य को समृद्ध किया बल्कि विशिष्ट विधा के प्रवर्तक कथाकार के रूप में उनकी पहचान बनाई। जयशंकर प्रसाद के लेखन में आदर्शवाद और प्राचीन गौरव गाथाओं की झलक मिलती है। उनकी कहानियों में भावना और आदर्श के बीच द्वंद्व का बहुत ही सशक्त चित्रण होता है जो उनकी कहानियों के पात्रों को यादगार बनाता है। ‘मदन मृणालिनी’ का मदन, ‘जहाँआरा’ का औरंगजेब, ‘पाप की पराजय’ का धनश्याम और ‘गुंडा’ का ननकूसिंह अविस्मरणीय पात्र बन गए हैं। इन कहानियों के अतिरिक्त उनकी सबसे प्रसिद्ध कहानी ‘छोटा जादूगर’ सहित बाईस कहानियाँ इस पुस्तक में सम्मिलित हैं।

A collection of short stories by an author who, along with Munshi Premchand, is largely credited with revival of Hindi literary efforts in the early 20th Century. However, while Premchand used common everyday Hindustani as it was used in the society at that time and dealt with social issues of those times, Jaishankar Prasad’s Hindi was more literary and elitist and narrated stories and events of a Utopian Indian Society from the glorious past.

The style of Hindi in this book is quite good and replete with rare gems of words. This book has several engaging and simple stories which one can easily empathize with. All in all, recommend it to those who wish to read decent Hindi literature which is common man related and encapsulates the milieu of Indian villages and cities.
