I thought I was drowning, but all I needed to do was breathe.
My world as I knew it had imploded. Fired from my job. Blackballed in the industry. Walking in on my cheating boyfriend... the structured life I worked so hard to build was falling apart––which is exactly why I gave in when my mother suggested a trip home to Scotland.
I hoped to find clarity in the rolling countryside. Instead, I stumbled onto the unimaginable. One minute I was standing on a scenic bridge contemplating life. The next... I was falling. Tumbling down into a cobalt and teal canvas where the ocean and sky became one.
Encased by water and chilled to the bone, I woke in a land of Fae queens and talking otters. There, I would learn that anything is possible for those brave enough to let go.
I create charmed worlds by writing stories involving passionate, strong-willed characters with something to discover. I started out writing romance but, along the way, realized I wanted to write stories about people. If there happened to be a romance, then it was meant to be. Otherwise, the stories I write are about self-discovery—who the characters are in the beginning and who they end up becoming.
In the pages of a book, you can be anything you want to be. Who would you become and why? :P
Inventive, magical, scary, heartfelt and thought-provoking journey of self-discovery...
I gave in to the weight around me. I’d become the Lady of the Lake without Excalibur, the damsel in distress without the prince to save her, Dorothy without her slippers or Alice without her “drink me” potion. Fantastic dreams weaved into amazing tales of triumph over obstacles. I was not triumphant over anything. I was a coward.
Falling Out of Focus by the fantastically talented Brynn Myers is a wondrous journey of self-discovery and self-healing commingled with Arthurian, Alice in Wonderland and Labyrinth dark fantasy feels. I confess that, at first, I thought I was reading a very imaginative fractured fairy tale. My original impression changed dramatically as I continued reading and the story morphed into so much more.
Novaleigh Darrow, our heroine, has fallen out of focus. She is burdened by guilt for the choices she’s made and the expectations she feels that she’s not lived up to.
Her life has come to a crossroads and she needs to make choices between light and dark paths. Nothing is written in stone. The choice is always hers. But, the colorful characters in this tale ensure that Novaleigh sees the whole picture, not just the light’s view or the view of the dark.
The supporting cast include, but are certainly not limited to, Oliver, a talking otter and Novaleigh’s guide on her journey to find her way back to who she is and who she wants to be; twin queens who rather bizarrely talk in alternating sing-song; and creepy harlequin clowns.
This whole book is comprised of favorite quotes. Please find following a minuscule taste of favorite quotes from Falling Out of Focus:
I looked around I realized I was standing on the edge of the muddy bank with tall trees in the distance. I could see the sun rising over the water just as the sky glistened a beautiful rose gold with ombre shades of purple and blue––just like in my dream. But this wasn’t my dream or was it? I can openly admit I have been mentally lost for months, but now as I sit here with an irate otter yelling at me, the idea of lost took on a whole new meaning. --- “This is no dream, Novi. Everything you are experiencing is real and until you accept that, you will not be able to go home.” “Yeah, okay. Sure. Twin queens, talking otters, Autumn Fae, houses suspended in midair. Yep, totally real. Got it.” --- “You still smell like a human. They hate humans.” I closed my eyes and cried some more. It was my fault. You did this, Novaleigh. You killed an entire village of fairies. --- The day I let all that fear and worry consume me was the day it all changed. I slipped off that bridge and fell into the void I’d always dreamt about. The thing was, that was also that day I started to live.
Andrea Parsneau is the superb narrator for Falling Out of Focus. This is the first time I’ve listened to any works voiced by Andrea Parsneau. Her voice is clear and easy to understand and she consistently differentiates between the characters to where I had no issue whatsoever knowing who was speaking at any time. Her voice is so spot on that it literally gave me chills when the tone was dark; evoked tears when our heroine was either overwhelmed or sad; and elicited feelings of delight when her surroundings were happy or joyful. The audio production is polished perfection. I did not want to put the audio down and snuck in additional audio time every chance I could. Without a doubt, Andrea Parsneau’s performance added to my pleasure of listening to Falling Out of Focus.
Falling Out of Focus is inventive, magical, scary, heartfelt and thought-provoking. There’s also a touch of romance. If you’ve ever ridden a classic, much beloved ride such as Forbidden Journey at Universal or It’s a Small World at Disney World, you may be able to relate to discovering something new in the experience every time you ride. Falling Out of Focus is like that. I hope to hit play with it again soon! Falling Out of Focus is an incredible adventure. If you love audios, I would highly recommend springing for the audio to further enhance your enjoyment!
I went into this story blind, unaware of what it was really about, and I was hooked! I read Falling out of focus in one day. Brynn was able to create a story so unique from anything I have ever read that you actually start to look deeper into your own mind and how you process things in your own life. It's a perfect mix between fairytales and real life. The characters were so intriguing and the setting was so descriptive that I had no problem at all picturing what was happening in my own head. In falling out of focus, you meet Novi who is on the most self discovery journey ever. As the story unfolds you get a deeper glance and understanding of her past and what has brought her to her current situation and what she needs to do to finally move on and live. I highly recommend that you take a chance on this story, it sucked me in from the very beginning, more than kept my interest when the plot and characters developed, and completely caught me off guard towards the end!
Here are a few of my favorite quotes from Falling out of focus:
Without the journey and crucial moment of understanding, I would still be questioning everything before me. I know now that I must trust what comes next, for there is a plan greater than the one I can see at work.
Stop thinking about all that is wrong, and four on what is right. It's there that you'll step out of the crazy, rise out of the rabbit hole, and start living again.
When a dream of dying actually becomes a chance to live... all you have to do is fall.
Brynn Meyers is a gifted storyteller. First of all, the cover is gorgeous. Kudos. Secondly, the blurb drew me in, and I had to know more. Once I fell into the story along with Novaleigh, I found an amazing story. Novi is on a journey—one filled with magical creatures. Her decisions aren’t easy, and neither her paths, but I enjoyed feeling each moment with Novi. The experience was so real and engaging. Ms. Meyers’ talented word building is fluid and beautiful. She infuses such creative substance and elegance to each sentence. Stunning writing. I recommend this book. Simply sublime.

This is my first read by Brynn Myers. Brynn lives in the Orlando, Florida area with her family. She writes paranormal for adults. After writing has a hobby for years, she finally turned her passion and talent into a career. She writes about strong willed, passionate characters. This story is one where you will lose track of time and not wanting it to end. You will find yourself turning pages faster then you realize. I highly suggest this story as I know you will love it as much as I did.
Falling Out of Focus – Brynn Myers – 5 stars The first line of this book – “Have you ever dreamed about letting go?” – Grabbed me and this paranormal/fantasy/romance held me until the very last words. I read this book without knowing anything about it, and I’m so glad I did. I could write this entire review just quoting from the book, but that seems counter-productive to a review where YOU are reading this to figure out why I liked it. The Good: Novaleigh Darrow: While she is at a crossroads in her life, she is self-aware and willing to take a step back to re-evaluate where she is in life. The fantasy element: So I need to be honest – When I introduced this review, I said it grabbed me from the first line until the very last. The truth is, when I got the 5th full paragraph I had to start over again because it was NOT what I was expecting. The characters are written in such a way that I assigned accents to them and could hear how their clothes moved and could visualize their movements. While there was nothing “new” about these characters (we’ve seen them before in movies & books in one form or another), I was drawn to care about them and their environment. The romance aspect: The “romance” was less traditional (sure there are a few sex scenes) and I felt this was more about Novaleigh’s romance with herself, her essence and her life choices. Her getting back to her true – authentic self to finding the answers she was searching for. The moral of the story: Novaleigh was gently guided to her final decision and I appreciated the message being reiterated in different forms “I was drowning but all I needed to do was breathe”. One last quote: “I’ve always been the girl who walks into a crowded room and feels alone. I’m socially outgoing, but inside I’m always screaming “when can I leave”.” (Imagine if all of us who felt that way actually did that when at a party? That’s all we would hear).
I honestly didn't know what I was getting into when I started reading Falling out of Focus, I have read all of Brynn Myers work but this book came out of left field and hit it right out of the park with ease. (Corny reference I know but it works)
Brynn has a talent that is impossible to justify with words but I always try because she uses her words to leave an imprint on your heart and soul and I feel I must repay the favor even in a small way.
Novi (LOVE the name by the way) falls!! She falls in every sense of the word! When she wakes up the world around her is one of dreams, so none of it can be real but after the last few years she is willing to ride this dream out cause it couldn't be worse that her real life...right?!?!
When Novi realizes that pain can be felt in any world she begins to believe her journey is not worth seeing through. Why would anyone choose to go back to pain?
Brynn spun a tale filled with fantasy but rooted in every human beings reality of life! I cried, I laughed but most of all as a human being I RELATED!!! We have all fallen out of focus at least once in our lives and the journey back to ourselves and our truth is never an easy one but when we get there we look back and realize every step was worth it. I always wished I had the words and Brynn gave them to me and so much more. She truly is an inspiration because no author can write a story like this with such truth if she herself hadn't lived it and knowing that, I felt a connection to this book like no other.
Thank you Brynn Myers for give me a book that will stay with me forever as a reminder that falling doesn't mean it's the end, it can be a new beginning if we choose it!
Note: I tried to pick a favorite quote from the book to share with you all but there are way to many to narrow down, read the book with a notepad because there are so many quotes to live by in this one!!
When I first started reading this book, I wasn’t quite sure what was going on with Novaleigh. She seemed to be in some sort of dream world with some very interesting characters. It took me a little bit to get into the story but then it took off and I couldn’t put it down.
Oliver will be your guide. Trust and faith have left you. He will guide you back to them.
Novi had to think about why she was there. We get to reflect back on things with Novi, while she tries to find answers. It was interesting and helped me understand Novi better. I had a lol moment when Novi was talking to the male fae about his essence. She also gets a surprise while in Sacrife.
Whatever has brought you here can be healed, you just have to let yourself be vulnerable enough to allow it.
We have fae’s, queens, otters, Lunatishee, and so much more. I loved all of the characters, Oliver was my favorite.I had some ugly cry moments and LOL moments. I have to say that Falling out of Focus really had a great meaning within. It really makes you reflect on your own life as well. Miracles do happen as long as we have faith. This was definitely something I have never read before. Brynn Myers does a great job of pulling you in with her writing. 1-click and get started today.
Falling Out of Focus by Brynn Myers was a truly magical story.
This story is about Novaleigh Darrow, a highly imaginative heroine and the choices she needs to make in order to find her correct path in life. The opening of the book begins: “Have you ever dreamt about letting go? You know, not caring about the consequences of your choices…just standing on the edge of a proverbial cliff and simply falling? I have. More times than I can count, I’m afraid. Now, before you go thinking I’m talking about suicide, let me clarify, I’m not. This isn’t like the scene from Thelma & Louise, not even close. I’m talking about looking out into an abyss and mentally free-falling so you no longer have to exist within the normal parameters of the world.”
Novi has a sensation of falling and when she wakes she is in a alter universe of Sacrife, with talking otters and twin Queens. The Queens tell her she must take a journey to find herself and make choices to get home. Novi along with Oliver, the otter, as her guide must travel through Sacrife which is a magical place meeting other King , Queens and mystical characters both good and evil. All the time she is having thoughts like : “I really don’t want to do this, but then again, I really don’t want to spend the rest of my days trapped in this whacked out dream and living in limbo either. Maybe I fell and hit my head and am in a coma. Yeah, that seems logical.”
The book has some Alice in Wonderland tones. The author gives the reader truly descriptive and well written scenes and characters. This was a fast paced book and hard to put down. I would highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more from this author.
This was one of the most enjoyable books I've read in a long time. The journey we are traveling with Novaleigh is magical, thrilling, scary and thought-provoking. Ms. Myers characters are superbly written -(wait until you meet Oliver, Novi's guide and protector in her fall) with absolutely stunning imagery so vividly described, you can see it! I found myself relating to Novi's struggles as I also found comfort in her process. Go ahead - take Novi's hand and enjoy the fall.
Through fascinating plot, prose, and imagination, Mrs. Myers has once again created a world from words.
In this cross between “Alice in Wonderland” and “The Wizard of Oz”, the reader is thrust into a world of fantasy, where every page brings a new mystery and every chapter adds another layer of drama.
Pretty good book. Great story line. Super inventive characters. It did take me a little bit to get into the book. There was so much going on. But once I did I couldn't put it down. The twist in the book is really great. Very well written and flows perfectly.
5 star review Wow this book! Falling Out of Focus by Brynn is a fantasy story with a twist. I’ve never read a book in this genre before and I have to question why because this book was amazing! It was so magical that I felt like I was a child again and reading fairy stories but it also had a serious theme intertwined so cleverly that you don’t realise until you suddenly start questioning your own thoughts and feelings. I can honestly say I have read many books but only a few ever stay with me and this will definitely be one of those. Not only has it opened up my eyes to whole new genre that I’ve been missing out on but it also made me think about other aspects of life. It took me a few chapters to get into and I put that down to it being a brand new genre to me but it certainly didn’t take long for me to be completely captivated by it and I loved the twist at the end. This book has the perfect balance of fantasy vs real life! It might sound strange to say I connected to a character in a fantasy book but I definitely did with Novaleigh. I could empathise with her inner thoughts and feelings. Regret is an awful thing to live with and there isn’t always a way to escape and sometimes you do find yourself in a place that you cannot find yourself coming back from. I think I connected with this story because some of the things were so close to home for me and I found myself quite emotional especially towards the end as Nova started to accept how she was actually feeling. I loved all of the other characters that appeared in the story – especially Oliver!! He is so cute! I am biased because I also love Otters! This is the first book that I have read by this author and if her other books are anywhere near as amazing as this one I know I will have definitely found myself a new author to love as well as a new genre! This truly is a beautiful story and even if you aren’t a fan of fantasy I would definitely recommend it!!
I was drowning, but all I needed to do was breathe.
It was 5:45pm when I decided my future. By 9:43 I was well on my way to making it all come true. At 11:16 I took the first step to make it a reality. At 11:17 I fell and found peace.
When a dream of dying actually becomes a chance to live. All you have to do is fall. The talented. Author Brynn Myers has woven an incredible tale, set in the enchanting world that she lovingly created. The story had an ‘Alice in Wonderland’/’Wizard of Oz’/’A Midsummers Night’s Dream’ feel to the whole thing. The talented author put such an original and unique spin on her story. The plot is quite complex, with multiple layers which are. choreographed and blended beautifully into a smooth, rich and vivid story. There were twist, turns and surprises which are sprinkled throughout the story, making for a unforgettable read. Brynn Myers has spun a tale filled with fantasy but rooted in every human beings reality of life! I cried, I laughed but most of all as a human being I could so totally relate to every feeling in this amazing story. Falling out of Focus is a spectacular paranormal/fantasy by Brynn Myers. It is gripping, has mystery, drama, magic, action, adventure, suspense and romance. It has a second chance at love aspect to the story, but that is in no way the whole story. The whole story is amazing. It was nothing like I expected; it totally caught me by surprise- I was completely blindsided by how truly exceptional this story is. It just got better and better as the story progressed- I was completely taken over by what I was reading. How true to life the message of enjoying the simple things; slowing down and taking the time to really be in the moment and enjoy life; we can be what we think; letting go of the things, and sometimes having to just move forward ……things we often know but tend to forgot as our hectic lives take over Beautiful story written by the extremely talented Author Brynn Myers!
“Novaleigh, you have fallen out of focus. Lost sight of who you are and what you truly want to be."
It was... okay.
Falling Out Of Focus is a competent, well written novel with an interesting protagonist and a unique setting and premise. What it is not is perfect and exceptional.
The main catharsis of the novel revolves around the protagonist, Novi, and her journey of coming to terms with her choices and regrets. The only problem is that the novel seems split between developing its fantasy land and revealing aspects of Novi's life in the real world. Often times I thought the plot felt somewhat aimless because the threat and tension Novi faced was abstract and undeveloped. The consequences present in the fantasy world never took hold because I was unclear what Novi was expected to do. Every character was actively seeking to urge Novi to overcome her regret and sadness but were super vague about the why and how she is supposed to do that until its eventually revealed that .
I also feel like the author was aiming for this to be a tear jerker. Call me heartless all you want but my eyes were drier than the sahara when reading the ending. Gayle Forman did it 100x better in If I Stay. I also thought the little epilogue didn't cap off Novi's arc really well. The whole book was about Novi doing the hard work of self-forgiveness and the ending was so saccharine it kind of felt tonally dissonant.
Theres also that issue I have with the romance. Gavin was super cute and super hot, he wasn't the problem. My problem comes from how the romantic relationship was interpreted in the real world. .
So in conclusion, even though it sounds like I hate this book, if you are looking for something light and kinda idealistic, this book isa pretty good bet. This probably simply isn't my kind of book (I have bad suspension of disbelief). But who am I to scare off someone who might like it.
Falling Out Of Focus by Brynn Myer was the first novel I had read from Brynn Myer, but it will definitely not be my last! This story will take you on a journey that’s filled with emotions, mystery, fantasy, drama, love and so much more! If you're a fan of paranormal stories, then this is definitely a book for you! Falling Out Of Focus was a 4 star read!
Novaleigh Darrow has always made the right choice and walked the straight and narrow, she knew what she wanted out of life and considered herself happy. But then life stepped in and had her questioning everything she ever knew. She's lost, she doesn't know which way is up anymore, she simply needs a break from life in New York and decides that she needs to head home to Scotland.
Novaleigh wakes up in the water and she's freezing. She realizes something isn't right, there's something "off" about her world, soon she discovers that this other world she's slipped into is full magic, paranormal beings, and so much more. Nothing is as it seems and Novi is headed for the biggest adventure of her life. What will she do? Can she handle what life seems to be throwing at her? Can she solve all these puzzles and figure out what she is suppose to do, and who she is suppose to help?
Falling Out Of Focus was SO good! This book will take you on the trip of a lifeline and leave you wanting more. It touches on life lessons, enjoying each moment, and letting go. This book has something for everyone, and I think each person will take something different from it. This is a must read for 2017, great job Brynn Myers!
I wasn't sure what to expect when I started listening to Falling Out of Focus but was very pleasantly surprised. Novi's journey of self discovery and acceptance in a fantasy world is one that will make listeners re-examine what is truly important in their lives. The story had a very fresh approach with terrific narration. This was a thought provoking and enjoyable listen that I would highly recommend.
I was voluntarily provided this review copy audiobook at no charge by the author, publisher and/or narrator. This review is my honest opinion.
“I dedicate this book to anyone who’s ever felt, at some point or another in their life, as though they were drowning in a dark abyss. There is light somewhere. Find it and follow it.” Brynn Myers.
“Stop fearing and start hoping. You may just be surprised by the outcome.”
Falling out of Focus is a spectacular paranormal/fantasy by Brynn Myers. It is gripping, has mystery, drama, magic, action, adventure, suspense and romance. It has a second chance at love aspect to the story, but that is in no way the whole story. The whole story is epic….there is no way that my review is going to come close to doing this book justice. It was nothing like I expected; it totally blew my mind- I was completely blindsided by how truly exceptional this story is. It just got better and better as the story progressed- I was utterly captivated by what I was reading. It has stamped itself on my heart forever. Novaleigh Darrow (Novi) thought her life was on the right path, thought she had made the right choices and thought she knew what she was doing and thought that she was reasonably happy. But fate intervened and everything that Novi thought she knew came crashing down around her. She became lost. Her life had gone from structured and predictable, to something no longer recognisable to her and entirely incomprehensible. She had had such big plans and believed she was destined for so much more- but here she was…. a failure. Novi had lost her job and then caught her boyfriend cheating on her with his intern. She was devastated. Unable to find a new job, Novi leaves New York and heads home to Scotland for a break and to try to regroup.
“I’d wasted a year and a half with a man who lacked the ability to be faithful and spent two years busting my *** for another man who couldn’t see my worth. Those two events had been the beginning of my downward spiral. Normally, I am a strong person, difficult to break, but with them both happening back to back, it felt as though the universe was rising up against me.”
So when Novi wakes in freezing water, with a voice telling her to breathe, she is bewildered- not sure where she is, how she got there, or what is going on? She eventually discovers that she has somehow managed to cross into another reality- one where magic, talking animals, kings and Queens, fairies and other mystical, mythical beings reside. Nothing is as it seems and Novi is in for an adventure of a lifetime. This quest will determine her fate. She must put her heart and soul into it- and solve the puzzles that she has been sent there to complete. The stakes are high. But she won’t be alone on her quest, she found a guide who will help keep her safe as she explores this new realm, to find what she is looking for. Her sanity will be tested- and she will need to learn to have faith and trust again. Will Novi find what she is searching for? Can she find her way back from this wonderful realm? What is at stake? What happens when she encounters someone from her past, here in this realm? Why is he there and what part will he play in her journey? Can she open her heart to new possibilities and stop letting the past control her future decisions? Will she find her querencia? Ms. Myers wove an incredible tale, set in the enchanting world that she lovingly created. The story had an ‘Alice in Wonderland’/’Wizard of Oz’/’A Midsummers Night’s Dream’ feel to the whole thing. The author put such an original and unique spin on her story. The plot is quite complex, with multiple layers which Ms. Myers choreographed and blended beautifully into a smooth, rich and vivid story. There were twist, turns and surprises which she sprinkled throughout the story, making for a riveting read. I loved everything about this book, from the concept, to the storyline, the beautiful setting, the intricate detailing, Novi and all the fabulous characters, the scintillating dialogue, and the brilliant conclusion. This story had so many wonderful messages and life lessons, such as- being your authentic self; enjoying the simple things; slowing down and taking the time to really be in the moment and enjoy life; thoughts have power and energy- we are what we think; letting go of the things that no longer serve you, suit you, or move you forward……….. just to name a few. I really could go on and on about this book, but honestly it is a ‘MUST READ’- believe me, you won’t regret it!
Thank you for taking me on such an incredible journey Ms. Myers; it’s one I won’t soon forget!
When I first started Falling Out of Focus by Brynn Meyer all I could think to myself was “What the heck am I reading?” The book opens with our heroine, Novaleigh Darrow, “falling” and waking up to someone telling her to breathe but she finds herself having fallen into water, when she surfaces she is met by a talking otter…yes, an otter…named Winston. Not long after waking Novi meets twin fairy queens who inform her that when she fell, she landed in the land of Sacrife. And the only way that she can leave is to “accept and move forward” and that trust and faith have left her but that she will be guided back to them but she has to first choose her path to get there. Novi is sent on her journey with her guide Oliver, Winston’s son, their first stop is Cadent, an autumnal land, where she meets Golar, the Golden Queen and the fairies that live in Cadent. While in Cadent we learn that she has been suffering from a form of depression. Novaleigh’s parents divorced when she was younger, her mother moving them to Scotland to be closer to her grandparents while her father moved to New York City. Novi spends a lot of time with her grandparents as she is growing up and loves them dearly, when she moves closer with her mom, Novi ends up meeting and becoming best friends with Gavin, a boy that lives near her Nanna and Pappa. As the two get older their relationship changes and becomes more. Gavin wants something different than Novi, and she ends up getting scared and taking off to NYC to be with her dad, thus starting the chain of bad decisions. Novi attend college and gets a job in a publishing house after graduation, where she works happily for 5 years until she asks for a vacation, is turned down and eventually quits. To add insult to injury, right about this time she finds her boyfriend in a compromising position with his secretary, her Pappa passes away then her Nanna. She decides to follow her mother’s request and heads to Scotland. All of these occurrences lead up to Novi’s fall. Novi has a hard time dealing with everything that has happened and decides to run from Cadent too, on her way out she finds Gavin has been captured and is being held, she rescues him with help from the residents of Cadent. The two have words and Novi’s journey to find her trust and faith continues. During the remainder of her journey Novi and Oliver meet some very interesting characters whom are both out to harm her and/or help her. By the end of the story we find out what is keeping her in Sacrife and exactly what she has to accomplish in order to go back to her life as she knows it. Will Novaleigh change and grow? Will she learn how to deal with her life and not feel guilty all the time or worry about those things that don’t really matter? Is this a dream realm or is it real? Though I am not a big fan of paranormal reads I am extremely glad that I read this one. It held my interest from the beginning, I HAD to keep reading and I couldn’t wait to see what was going to happen next! What a great story, thank you Ms. Meyer for this fantastic story.
I decided to start reading "Falling Out of Focus" because the blurb was interesting, and the book lived up to its expecations.
Novi feels like she's about to choke and feels like she's falling when the book starts, and when she gasps for air, she finds herself in a place she has never seen before but somehow, there is something about it that may not be new. Once there, she meets a lot of weird people and animals who will help her find her way. This is the journey she has take in order to find herself and only if she does it she will finally be free.
I liked that this story was unpredictable. We are taken into Novi's adventure from the first pages and see how it all unfolds slowly, with an air of mystery around the whole journey of discovery. What happens to Novi may be hard to explain, so you need to read this book to be taken into a sort of "Alice in Wonderland" experience where in the end love always wins. Above all, the journey will make Novi find herself and find the will to live again.
It's surely a book I would recommend to fantasy lovers.
Have you ever wondered what would it be like if Alice had been a full grown woman when she found out she stepped into Wonderland? Well, this would be the answer to that question.
Novaleigh found herself at the bottom of a lake fighting for breath until an internal voice told her to take a breath. Instead of drowning she found herself very much alive and able to swim up to the surface and enter a fantastical world I can only describe as Wonderland.
Sacrife is the land of the fae divided in different lands and kingdoms. Novie meets the twin queens who blessed and gifted her a guide to the land, a talking otter named Oliver. Together, the two of them navigated the land in search of the answers as to why Novaleigh ended up in Sacrife in the first place.
Just like in the childhood fairytale, Sacrife is full of magical beings all of them breath-takingly beautiful and out of this world. And like every story, there would be a villain. But instead of the Red queen of hearts we meet the queen of The White.
As far as comparisons go, that’s about it, for this story is geared towards an adult woman’s internal struggle with life and how she ended up in her current situation. Novaleigh’s journey through Sacrife forced her to look back into her past and question all the decisions she had made. Or didn’t make.
Initially I thought it was a story about self-discovery. A self analysis interwoven into this world full of magic and danger whispering in the fringes of the light and into the darkness. Then I found out it was about forgiveness and second chances.
To be completely honest, the story didn’t grip me. In fact, it took me a few days to finish because it kind of dragged in parts. Yes, there were exciting times and the words were beautifully crafted throughout. But the author took her time revealing the important bits. Then some great reveals were done in narrative instead of rich dialogue which had been a let down for this reviewer. Also at times, world building took precedence over plot progression.
Falling Out of Focus by Brynn Myers is a 4 star read for me. I was really intrigued when reading the book to find out what exactly was happening. After a series of sucky circumstances, Novaleigh finds herself taking a trip to visit her mom and get her bearings back. Novaleigh just feels lost. She made some choices she thought were the right ones. All she knows is she doesn't want to be lost anymore. After a run in with her ex boyfriend Gavin, Novaleigh decides to take a walk. The last thing she remembers is feeling as she is drowning and then she ends up in Sacrife. She is told by all the inhabitants of Sacrife that she meets, that she is there to find herself and what is holding her back. After choosing her path Novi, along with her guide, starts making her way through Sacrife Novi encounters quite a few obstacles that she must get through if she wants to get home. She is convinced that everything she is experiencing is a dream and none of it real. Novi is resistant to what is going on but after a bit of her journey she finds Gavin and isn't sure of his reaction so she does just as he asks and goes on her way. However, she still has a ways to go before she can get home.
"I failed to realize, though, that life was––correction, IS about more than whether or not you have the best job, best apartment, trendiest clothes, most likes on social media. It’s about so much more, but I gave up that version of happy to pursue my dreams and now those dreams have brought me here. Failure."
Novaleigh finally learns that all you have to do to live is to just fall. This book took some twists I wasn't expecting it to take but I'm so glad I stuck with it and read all the way through. It was totally worth it.
I found a piece of myself in this book. Novaleigh’s story is a coming of age adventure mixed in with fantasy. The story brings to life some of our inner struggles and the things that are holding us back in life. It is not about possessions or romance in the sense of the physical but a story about finding everything you need inside of yourself. I took away from it a sense of peace and serenity. It is easy to get caught up in the struggles of everyday life. Things like: work, money, and ambitions can be distracting and you could find yourself losing the most important people in your life. Friends and family are put to the forefront and this inner struggle that Novaleigh had to overcome is in each of us, maybe more subdued in some more so than others. The beauty of this book is that there is love, loss, fantasy, and adventure all rolled into one complete tale. Some of the other characters that come into play are Gavin and Oliver. Gavin is an old flame that Novaleigh had left behind to pursue her dream of being a publisher and wanting to have the freedom of a set path. She craved the ability to make her own decisions without getting stuck in what other people wanted for her. Oliver is her companion during this journey of self discovery, he is witty and polity in just the perfect blend. We also hear about a horrible boss and a unfaithful ex boyfriend early on which seemed to fuel Novaleigh’s trip into self discovery. The twists and turns that came to be were great and handled with such finesse I never saw the transitions coming.
Falling out of focus is amazing. Brynn Myers wrote a story that speaks to me. Novaleigh Darrow finds herself in a mysterious land and must go on a journey of a lifetime. She must face all of her demons she has put on herself before she can choose her own fate.
Novaleigh is a runner. She runs into big decisions and then runs away when she loses control of the situation. It is much easier to push everything away then to face them head on. She reaches for her dreams determined to be independent and her dreams failed her. Now she must face everything and everyone she left behind. Can she forgive herself for all the pain she has caused?
Gavin is head over heels in love with Novaleigh and always has been. When she left it tore a hole into his heart but he never gave up on hope for her return. Now that she is back home, can they find their way back to one another? Can Gavin show Novaleigh her worth?
As I followed Novaleigh through her world I began to realize her story is not only about finding herself but also about being true to herself. Just because it doesn't work out the way you planned doesn't mean you have to give up. It might just mean you just need to try another way. I am giving Falling out of Focus 5 stars. It is a beautiful tale filled with fantasy, love and forgiveness. I hope you enjoy reading this one as much as I did! I can't wait to read the rest of what Brynn Myers has to offer!
“Falling Out of Focus” by Brynn Meyers is a pleasant surprise. At the beginning of the book I had no clue where it would take me. I ended up on a journey that I did not expect. One that made me feel many emotions and experiences with the character Novaleigh Darrow, Novi for short. She is such a relatable character. We have all fallen off of our path in life and had to find our way back. This is Novi. She finds herself trying not to drown while submerged in water hearing a voice telling her to breathe. When she emerges she is not where she expected. There is talking animals and Queens. She must choose her path. But which path do you choose? Such is the way of our lives. Each path can create a different outcome. How do you know which to take? Does one take the safe path or reach for the unknown? I enjoyed not knowing what to expect from the book and was eager to get through and see what would happen to Novi. I also enjoyed that Brynn Meyers made the story so engulfing that one was feeling so many different emotions. I was reminded a bit of Alice in Wonderland or Neverwhere. The alternate realities are great for breaching everyday problems and issues but still making it relatable to the reader. I will be looking for more of Brynn Meyers books. I always like an adventure and that was what I was given with this book.
I was not expecting this novel to be any type of a fantasy. Based on its title”Falling out of focus” it seemed to me it would be something entirely different than what I started reading. Within the first two chapters I was transported into a magical realm that holds life in a brand new form. The main character we meet is Novaleigh Darrow, a young woman who enjoys life and who so desperately wants to reconnect with family. Her life is not what she thought it would be. Turn of events in her personal life send her packing from New York back to her life in Scotland. Family memories await her. As she returns to her family home she is overwhelmed with all her thoughts and reminders of times past. Something occurs and sends Novaleigh down the rabbit hole. Her world becomes tilted on its axis and she is put to the rest of reality and imagination. She meets friends along her journey of self discovery. I really enjoyed this fun adventure. It was filled with many new things and new encounters, lands and creatures to heartache and love. We meet Gavin, a childhood friend and love. Oliver and many many beautiful characters. It all filled my mind with lots of adventures and some sad moments too. The journey upon expedition we all face in our daily lives with and without hardships come to play here with Novaleigh. It truly makes you think of your own paths in life, choosing to take certain paths. Even in this book, among magical beings and quests it hold a true testament of live life, love life, choose life. Sure moments are going to happen that make you question yourself but never have self doubt in who you are and what you deserve.
A 4 star read rating for, Falling Out of Focus by Brynn Myers. This is the first book by this author that I have read. It is extremely different from my usual books and at first I had quite a difficult time getting adjusted to it. This is a Paranormal, fantasy, romance book. So if that is your genre, then this book is totally up your alley. Once I got into the flow of the book, I ended up somewhat enjoying it. I will admit, i was a bit out of my element with this one. The books begins with Nova falling in water and when she breaks through the top of the surface, she is greeted there by an otter named Winston. Not only is there an otter, but also fairy queens that finish each other's thoughts. They inform her that she is in a fairy land and the only way to get back to her life is to accept her life the way it is and move on. Novaleigh loses her job and finds out that her boyfriend is cheating on her all within a small window, unable to find work, she does what she has to do and she moves back to Scotland. Throughout her “journey” with her guide Oliver, she realizes that life is what you make of it, not about materialistic things but your positive contributions to it. This was a difficult review for me to write due to the difficulty I had connecting with this book. I think most of my difficulty was due to the themes and the genre. Don't get me wrong, once I read and began to understand the book and the flow it was going with, I enjoyed it.
Falling Out Of Focus is by Brynn Miller. This is my first novel by this author.
Novaleigh ‘Novi’ Darrow’s life is structured. She feels that her life is going in the right direction and that she is happy but when she loses her job and finds her boyfriend cheating on her, her world comes crashing down. To her, nothing makes sense. She decides to move to Scotland from New York.
‘It was 5: 45pm when I decided my future. By 9: 43 I was well on my way to making it all come true. At 11: 16 I took the first step to make it a reality. At 11: 17 I fell and found peace.’
When she wakes up in freezing water, she is disoriented and not sure where she is. She is told by the queen that she is chosen and informs her she is there for a reason. With this, she embarks on a journey.
I highly recommend this book. This is a book I could relate to.
When a book opens with:
‘Have you ever dreamt about letting go?’
Will definitely pull you in and not let you go.
This had a feel of Alice in Wonderland to me and I loved every minute of it.
This novel has the perfect blend of different genres with fantasy, romance, and paranormal. Some of my favorite genres.
I loved this book. I remember how it feels when your life turns upside down and you don't know which way to go.
‘I’m talking about looking out into an abyss and mentally free-falling so you no longer have to exist within the normal parameters of the world.’
First up Brynn has written this book brilliantly and certainly knows how to tell a story. I did get lost a few times in this book but it was more me than anything else probably due to the fact I don’t normally read this genre often, could be old age to lol.
For those of you who like books that are a combination of paranormal, romance, fantasy and drama then I highly recommend that you read this book. If you want to go on a journey of self-discovery then to this is the book you need to read, I am pretty sure we all have had that dream where we are falling or letting go, most times we have no idea why we had this dream so maybe this book can be used as enlightenment for us all. It also could lead us to question is this dream the beginning or ending of something, in reality it can be either.
This story is about Nova who has had the letting go/falling dream to find out what this means she is about to embark on a journey of discovery. She needs to pick a path to follow but will she pick the right path? Paths have consequences but Nova has never cared about them as I think at one time in our lives nor have we. Throughout her journey, she realizes that life is not made better by having the best job, home or whether she has the best trends of clothes to wear. It’s as she realizes it’s what is put into life. Also, its about never giving up on happiness to have what really doesn’t matter, or have what says nothing about who you are.
Dreams are for a purpose and we can pick or chose if we follow them or go down a different path.
Falling out of Focus is paranormal fantasy with a mystery. This was my first read by the author and I was wasn't exactly sure what to expect. There was a lot going on and it took a little bit longer to get into.
Novaleigh a young woman dreams of dying but will the dream become a chance to live? Novaleigh has to think about why she is where she is and why. When you think you are making the right choices and you think that your life is headed in the right direction BAM something happens and your world has been changed. Novaleigh finds herself lost; she felt that everything she planned for was all she was losing and that she was failing in life.
When Novaleigh dreams of falling and the she wakes up to someone telling her to breath. It all starts here, the fantasy I mean. She is talking to an Otter not only is he an otter but she finds she must take a journey with his son as a guide. Novaleigh must chose a path for her life. One not to worry about consequences before she now needs to be weary of the possibility of her choices. Novaleigh will have to learn to let go of some things in order to move on. She must focus and learn how to deal with life.
If you are ready for a crazy journey, you have found the correct book from Brynn.
