Everyone has always made fun of Sandra Ferris. She's gawky and shy, and people whisper about her everywhere she goes. But the Wakefield twins step in and change Sandra's life by giving her a new look—hair, clothes, make-up, the works!
Suddenly, the ugly duckling turns into a beautiful swan, and that means trouble for Jessica. Now Sandra is getting all the attention. And even worse, Jessica discovers that Sandra is running against her for Sweet Valley's sixth-grade Citizen of the Year . . . and it looks as if she just might win. Jessica has to find some way to tame the monster she has created—and her time is running short.
Francine Paula Pascal was an American author best known for her Sweet Valley series of young adult novels. Sweet Valley High, the backbone of the collection, was made into a television series, which led to several spin-offs, including The Unicorn Club and Sweet Valley University. Although most of these books were published in the 1980s and 1990s, they remained so popular that several titles were re-released decades later.
Jessica’s Bad Idea After gym class, Jessica vents to Liz about their uniforms and how dull they are. She wants to spice them up with spangles down the side, but Liz tells her unless she wants their teacher to explode she’d better leave the uniforms alone. Kerri then invites them to her party. Jessica asks who else is coming and she mentions Sandra. Kerri says she doesn’t want to but her mom made her. Liz says she’s not so bad. They use to be friends but then she’s not sure what happened. Then she went to another school a couple of years. Lila calls and says she’s been invited to the party. She says maybe she’ll get her a ballet musix box. Jessica and Lila come up with a ballet present theme party. Liz offers to help Jessica make cal, but Jessica wants to take all the credit. The other girls love the idea and so does Kerri’s mom. Melissa McCormick says she saw a pair of turquoise ballet slippers that would be perfect, Grace Oliver knows of a store that has barette’s decorated with ballerinas, and Olvia wants to get Kerri a book about Mikhail Baryshnikov. Jessica after a few calls gets bored and decides to talk to the rest of the girls in school, or call them tomorrow night.
At the party, Sandra feels like an outcast, None of the other girls (including Kerri) don’t talk to her because she’s not pretty or popular. She’s tall and lanky. She hears Jessica and Kimberly whispering about her and saying “How invited the giraffe” Liz zomes over to talk to her and asks how she’s enjoying the party. She admits she just doesn’t feel like she belongs there. Kerri starts opening presents before Liz can convince her that’s not true. Sarah gives her a pink leotard. Kimberly gets her tights. When she opens Sandra’s present it’s a pair of soft, leather, gloves. Plus there too big. There’s an awkward silence and then the girls start to giggle. Sandra rushes out of the room anc finds a study. She starts to cry. Liz comes to check on her. Sandra allows her to come in. Liz finds out Jessica didn’t call Sandra. Sandra tells her don’t blame Jessica. She’s not Kerri’s friend. She was only invited because of her mother and then she starts to complain about her height. Liz points out the positives (heaight is good for sports and all the famous models are tall. Plus you can reach things others can’t). Liz invites her bike riding and invites her to come back to the party to watch “Red Shoes”. KLiz tells her to ignore them and says she can sit by her.
After the party, she jumps on Jessica’s case. She invites her to go bike riding tho but Jessica wants no part of it. Liz and Sandra start to spend a lot of time together. Sunday they go bike riding. Monday they eat lunch together with Liz’s friends. It’s Tuesday and they’re going to the mall. Sandra invites Jessica but she says she’s busy. Sandra notices Jessica trying to sew on cuss to her sweater. She suggests a way she should sew. Sandra compliments Jessica on her style and asks to see her designs. Jessica shows them to her. Then they start to talk about how to improve Sandra’s looks. Sandra asks Jessica to teach her and give her a complete makeover. Liz is thrilled. They wash Sandra’s hair, give her a French braid, they give her blush, and one of Liz’s sleevereless shirts and a purple belt of Jessica’s. Then Jessica gives her lessons on how to have a more confident wallk (and how to talk).
Then they all go for a walk. They run into some boys from school (Ricky, Aaron, and Tom). They usually tease her but today they’re full of compliments. Steven even takes interest and tells her she should come to the beach for a volley ball game. Sandra feels like she’s in a fairytale! Liz suggest she stay for dinner and they can go to the mall later. Sandra is the talk of SVMS the next day. Everyone LOVES the new Sandra! Her hair is on pint (full and shiny). She has on a denim outfit. Rickey and Tom are all lon her. (Even tho Tom probably jsust wants the denim outfit). Jessica is getting ticked. Sandra isn’t giving her (her) due credit for her new look. So, Jessica goes over to the Uniconrs, (Oh this isn’t Tom). The Unicorns don’t notice Jessica’s angora sweater with the lace collar and cuffs.
By the end of the day, Jessica’ is OVER IT!! The Unicorns even invite her to sit with them and discuss her outfit. Caroline comes over and says the East German gymnast are coming soon to Sweet Valley. This takes the talk off Sandra and they start talking about the East German gymnastics. Bruce tho comes over to tease and flirt with Sandra . He takes her brownie and then gives it back and says “Sweets for the sweets”. Jessica’s anger comes back. Kimberly says he must like her. Jessica then notices them lauging at her. Her cuff comes aloose and lands in the mac and cheese. Jessica tells her she doesn’t think Brucae likes her and she knows she doesn’t.
Julie and Kerri asks Sandra to be there partner in Home Ec. Her classmates cheer her on in gym when she has to spike a volley ball. Caroline tells Jessica that Janet wants Sandra to join the Unicorns. This makes her wonder even tho half the timeCaroline’s stories aren’t true. There teacher announces they’ll be celebrating “Sweet Valley Days” coming up. It’s when the twon was founded. Sandra is even confident to answer Mrs. Arnette’s question in class about when SV was founded. Next week the maryor (Mayor Ladge) will be coming to speech. Someone will be nominated to introduce him. It will be someone whose a good citizen and a good public speaker. Jessica wants the honor. There’s another honor. There will be a parade. One student from each grade will be get to ride on the Citizen Flot.
She tells Liz she wants her to nominate her. Liz thinks she’d have rather rode in the parade. She says she’s going to do both, Sanda and Liz walk to the Wakeffields after school and Sandra tells Liz how surreal all the attention feels. Steven asks Sandra to play volleyball with him Saturday but Sandra says she doesn’t know. Steven is older. She’s realizing that the people around her are shallow. Liz tells her its because of who she is. She has a thought and asks Liz to nominate her to introduce the mayor. Liz says she’s already agreed to nominate Jessica, but Sandra talks her into it. Later, Jessica decides to show her ideas to her mother. Her mom tells her she has potentional basically but she has to work hard and practice her drawing and sewing. Jessica isn’t thrilled by sweing basic things and suggest that instead she design her own pioneer dress and her mother can help her make it. Her mother says that will be hard but Jessica of course doesn’t hear her and rushes off to start the dress.
Liz tells Jessica she’s going to nominate Sanra. She says it’ll help her confidence. Jessica says that’s not what she’s seen and she thinks she’s just faking. Liz says she’ll nominate her for citizen of the year. She tells her fine but she thinks Sandra is a schemer. S andra is the one selected to introduce the mayor. Sandra says she thinks she’ll run for citenz of the year. Jessica tells Liz she doesn’t have a chance. Janet tells The Unicorns agree to work together to get three members of each grade on the float. Janet confirms she’s not asking Sandra to be a Unicorn.
Jessica volunteers in class first to donate money to the literacy program. Jessica gives one dollar. Sandra volunteers to give two. Sandra is nomated in class to ride on the float. Liz nominates Sandra. Jim and Ken are also nominated. It goes back and forth. Every time Jessica volunteers to do something Sandra one ups her. She volunteers to erase the black board. Sandra volunteers to clap to wash the board AND clap the erassers. In gym Jessica misses an easy shot while Sandra spikes the ball and wins the game. In secine, Jessica offers to clean the gerbit cage LIES but Sandra has already done it. Jessica is pissed by the end of the day and vents to Liz. Liz says she’s just mad because she’s beating her at her own game.
Jessica tries to think of how to raise money for the library book mobile. She finishes her pioneer dress (sketch). It’s red and black plaid It has a fitted waist and a full skirt and falls to her ankles. The collar is high and lacy and it has buttons down the front. She tops it off with a black bow on the waist. What is with Jessica and these lace collars? It sounds not very cute to me but her parents love it. Her mother says they’ll go look for a pattern and some material. Her mother tells her not to make plans for the weekend. The dress will take up a lot of time. Jessica asks her parents what she can do to raise money quickly. Her father suggests a car raffle. Her mother tells her she’s getting too wrapped up in the contest. What if she doesn’t win? But Jessica isn’t hearing it.
Later she goes down to the kitchen and asks Steven. He says last year the Seniors made a commerative booklest about the prom. This gives Jessica an idea. They can put out a commemorative booklet about “SV Days”. Sandra starts to notice the change in Jessica towards her. She knows she doesn’t like her but doesn’t undersrtand wh. She overhears the twins talking about raising money for the book mobile. Sandra gets the same idea Jessica gets but from her sister. She rushes to tell her teacher Mrs. Arnette. She hears someone calling her name but doesn’t stop. Sandra gets to Mrs. Arneetee’s just as she’s telling the class about Sandra’s idea-which was hers-. She has to pretend she wanted to talk to her about a homework assignment. Jessica tells Liz Sandra stole her idea. Liz doesn’t know how she could do this because Jess just told it to her 10 minutes ago. She remembers Sandra rushed pass them and thinks she must have overheard them talking. Liz says they should ask her first so they find her and fonfront her. Sandra asks why she’s being so mean to her. Jessica tells her after all she did for her she took credit for everything. Sandra tells her at first she just ran for the fun of it but now she wants to (and is going to) beat her. Liz tells her just to tell rs. Arnette. Jessica says she won’t believe her. Liz says then they should tell the other students but Jessica says they’ll just think she’s jealous.
The day she’s to introduce the Mayor, Mrs. Arnette tells Mr. Clark loves her idea and thinks it will be a wonderful project. She also wants her to introduce the idea to the school. Sandra is taken aback. She’s just about to give her introduction and she’s already nervous about that. But then she gets uneasy. She might have heard a little of Jessica’s conversation but she didn’t steal her idea. Still, she tells her idea and tells everyone her idea. The Mayor wishes her luck. After this all the guilt is gone.
Steven is upset that Sandra won’t be coming home with them and sshocked that she took Jessica’s idea. Her mother tells her ists a serious accusation to make to call someone a thief, but it certainly sounds bad. Mrs. Wakefield tries to suggest she help her with another idea but she says it’s already to late. The vote is tomorrow. Alice says there will be other contests and then says Jessica still needs to learn to make a dress if she’s going to be a designer. She offers to take them all to the fabric store and then to Casey’s.
The next day, Sandra wins the sixth grade citizen of the year. Jessica wins runner up. Sandra knows she can’t really be happy until she makes up with the twins. So, she goes to there house. When she sees Steven he frowns at her. She says she came to speak to the twins but he says he doesn’t think they’ll want to talk to her She tries to explain that she didn’t steal the idea and wishes there were some way to prove it. . Steen asks her when she thought of the idea. She tells him yesterday monrning. He tells her Jessica thought of the idea the night before. Then she starts to think *did* she steal the idea. She thinks back on the words of the conversation she heard the twins having. She has a sickening thought as she realizes she did hear enough to connect the dots.
On the day of the parade, Jessica has finished her dress but her heart isn’t in it. Even tho her parents tell her she can wear it to the parade. Her father says they’ll be leaving at ten thirty and he wants them ready with smiles on there faces. Jessica is busy working on the hem of her dress when Sanda comes over and tells her she’s not going to be in the parade. She then explains what happened and admits she stole the idea. She told the chairman she was too sick to ride on the float and now Jessica can take her place. She was nervous anyway. Jessica realizes that Sandra did a lot of thw work and says she should take credit for the booklet. Jessica’s dress isn’t finished . but even tho it’s imperfect she does what she can (fixes the hem with tape) and keeps it moving.
The float looks like “old time sweet Valley”. Kimberly and Janet are the seventh and eight grade representivivites. After it’s over, she thanks Sandra. The next day she looks at her dress (Jessica) and decides it’s a disaster. Next time she needs a dress she’ll just buy one. This ends her sewing career. My Thoughts Yeeeah Sandra was kinda horrible! She knew good and doggone well she should have held up on telling Mrs. Arnette that idea after she heard the twins talking about it. Maybe she didn’t exactly *steal* it. I do believe it came to her, but the motivation behind telling the teacher was what made it wrong. There were times in the story I sympathesed with Jessica because I knooooooooow what it’s like to be REALLY over someone going ON and ON and ON and On over someone. *That* I could relate to easily! It always sseems to be bad idea in books where there’s a “plain” girl and the popular girl helps her come up. She *always* seems to turn into a monster. Rating: 6

I think we're supposed to end up feeling sorry for Sandra, but she really was all kinds of awful.
It was also jolting to hear about an Olympics team coming in from "East Germany"! This was published only months before the Berlin Wall came down, which is so surreal to me.
This story starts off involving Jessica and a girl named Sandra, who is very shy. The other girls make fun of her and how clumsy she can be. Jessica decides she'll give Sandra a makeover and once she does that it changes Sandra's appearance and attitude.
(Herein lies the problem with this book. It supports the idea that what a woman looks like is more important that what she is actually like as a person. No one wanted anything to do with Sandra before the makeover, but after it's done and she really looks pretty and wears better clothes suddenly lots of the boys are paying her attention.)
The attention, of course, is what causes problems since Jessica likes to be the center of attention and she gets jealous over how much attention Sandra is getting. Things get worse for Jessica when Sandra wins the position of introducing the major at a school assembly, and wins a citizen's award which will allow her to ride on a gloat during a parade.
We find that Sandra has a better attitude towards things than Jessica and it all works out okay in the end.
Every Sweet Valley book could be called "Jessica's Bad Idea", on the real
In this one, Jessica gives awkward outcast Sandra a She's All That level makeover. Pretty soon Sandra is getting more attention than even A-lister Unicorn Jessica Wakefield. When they both run for election-based contests, Sandra proves that the popularity has gone to her head and becomes a grade-A grotsky lil biotch. This is what Jessica gets for helping her lessers smh
When Jessica has a bad idea, I have a great story to read..my childhood would not have been the same without these girls and their wonderful adventures. Thank you Francine Pascal.
