Family, Bree Marquard had decided at eighteen years old, was unnecessary. It was a shadow built on secrets. An idea spread across every commercial, lining picture frames, and made into perfectly heartwarming greeting cards. Yet any knowledge of her own family had long been kept at bay from Bree by her over protective mother Kathryn, a retired member of the armed forces, and an expert in secrecy.

All that changes the night Bree brings home Brennan O'Donnell during fall break from freshman semester at their University. A student in Bree's journalism class, Brennan is quiet, polite, and reminiscent of old world charm. He was raised to be the perfect gentleman and seems to Bree the perfect mystery.

He has secrets of his own.

Their meeting was a set up. His intimacy with her started out as a sham. These are the things required of him as a pawn in his father’s game against the Marquard family. Stephen O’Donnell is an entrepreneur full of finesse and money, formerly a flame in Kathryn’s past, skillfully using the hypnotic charm of Brennan’s race against Bree to ensnare the magic contained in the Marquard bloodline.

With this singular meeting a sinister, generations-old, plot is set into motion and a cold war standoff ensues between The O’Donnells and the family Bree never got to know. Only, there's a problem. Bree isn’t a hero. She questions everything and when it comes time for action she hesitates. Her thoughts surround only the known, and what Bree knows for sure? There is nothing about her that can save them.

What follows will lead Bree to question her identity, the past of the family she has always yearned to know, and the choices she will make to save a world in which she thought she understood her place. It will endow her new supernatural abilities and bring with them the harsh realities of losing the foundation of everything once held so certain. A sense of security. A lineage. A father. A love. A future.

Vein Bound is a tale of magic, love, loss, and the timeless power of self discovery.

I received a copy of this book from the author in return for an honest review.

Vein Bound is a YA fantasy novel that focuses on a girl called Bree Marquard who discovers secrets about her family after an awkward meal that led to her nearly being kidnapped by her boyfriend's father. And really, that says it all, this book is a wild ride from start to finish and an interesting debut.

If you're into flowery language, magic and family then this is a book for you.

What I Liked

The mythos of the book is interesting. You find out about these people, the Oltec, who have these abilities but were almost wiped out centuries ago. You find out most stories about magic were probably based off them and you discover that even if their power was limited, they could be powerful. This is all really interesting and it gives me Starcrossed vibes by Josephine Angelini which is a great book.

It also has a young sounding narrator and a focus on family. We need more books that don't heavily rely on romance so it's always great to find more.

Finally I like Brennan...I can have him, right?

What I Don't Like

I have to admit that I'm not a fan of flowery language and heavy description. I know it can work well in fantasy but there were places where metaphors or colour descriptions just sounded ridiculous. I mean personally if I felt like my intestines were melting I'd be pretty panicked urk. But as I said, this really is just a preference thing. I prefer simpler language but the language doesn't distract from the story...it just on the odd occasion makes you pause and go what.

Generally however this was a decent book so you guys should all hurry up and buy it ;)

My number one reason for a headache? Characters in books accepting their newfound powers the moment they discover them. So it's no surprise that reading Vein Bound was like breath of fresh air.

Grey Channing really did a fantastic job of welcoming us in the thoughts and feelings of Bree as she has to find out what the true meaning of family is to her. We follow her a she grows up, gets to know more about her past and future and comes to terms with who she really is.
But most of all, Channing was able to create characters that are human. Both those we might like and those we might dislike make decisions from what they believe to be the truth.

If you have some free time, please consider picking up this book. Because I can assure you that you'll be looking forward for the next chapter just like I do.

This was a damn good debut novel. Vein Bound is a supernatural novel with an interesting mythology that I haven't read the likes of before. There were some moments that were slow but I really appreciated that this book was about family. Instead of it centering around a romance or even around the coming of age of the heroine, it was really about the bonds of family and the ending definitely had me looking forward to a sequel. So much drama and action potential.
