So this is book number 9 in Toni’s Assassins series. If you’re like me and you’ve read the first 8 (along with the 3 Bellevue Bullies books that tie in) you’re probably a super fan, love sports romance, and realize that Toni really does write the best hockey books. The Assassins are my favorite team, anyways. And if you’ve kept up with the series, you know this team is more than a team. They’re a family. I love that bond. That connection all these players and their families share. Every time I read one of these books it feels like coming home to me. But enough about that, lets get to the book at hand, Face-Off at the Altar. Markus and Mekena’s story.

Markus and Mekena’s story is a second chance romance. The two dated in college and were very much in love. Something horrible happened that tore them apart and they haven’t seen each other in 2 years. That’s where we are at the start of this story. Markus is focused on his NHL career. As much as he misses and thinks of Mekena, he’s pretty sure he missed his shot and he has to stay focused on what he can control. Getting signed with his dream team, The Assassins.
He had a goal. He had an endgame, and he was going to get there. Doing it the only way he knew how. Work: pure and simple. No distractions. No worrying about the past. Only the future. His future. The NHL.

When a wedding brings Markus and Mekena back together, he changes his tune. Markus has to get down to the bottom of what happened between the two of them, and try to win his girl back. The problem: Mekena hates his guts. She really loves him, but hating someone who hurt you so deep is easier. So she focuses on the hate.

Markus is resilient. And he’s a fantastic hero. Is he perfect, no. But he’s also been hurt in a big way and my heart hurt for him. I felt for him. I wanted Mekena to give him that chance so badly and for them to work it out. Mekena is a stubborn one. Much like most of Toni’s heroines, she’s tough but also soft. She has a good heart, and even though it was broken, she’s a forgiving and loving person deep down. I rooted for this couple to heal together and make it work. I really did love them both.

Markus and Mekena’s story is complicated. It’s not what it seems and not what you think. This is a story of love, forgiveness, family and second chances. This book gave me so many feels. I felt so much for these characters. I cried, I laughed, and I loved. The Assassins are one of those groups that Aleo could write dozens and dozens of books about and I would never stop reading. If you haven’t read this series you’re really missing out! And although I feel like this could easily be read as a stand-alone, you’ll get so much more out of it if you read the series in full!

Firstly, for my safety girls, during a 2 year separation he was with many OW while she kept her virginity for him. I didn't want her wit OM but after how he acted when they're back together, how was he with so many OW?! It kept me pissed off for so long. Specially when she says stuff like "I kept my virginity for you" and "it felt so damn good, and soon she was asking herself why she had waited so long to do it (sex). But she knew why. She only wanted him." Why is it that Mekena only wants him but he can want others?

That's when I got really annoyed and figured Mekena loved him truly and Marcus didn't as much considering he was with many OW.

So for my many friends on GR who I know hate this trope, this isn't for you.

And then (major spoilers coming up)

I knew that Markus wouldn't have cheated on Mekena with her sister. She intended to rape him by drugging him but he couldn't stay hard.

This is attempted rape and by giving him a BJ while he was drugged is a form of sexual abuse and rape. In the book I read before this, this author downplays the effects of 18 years worth of emotional, verbal abuse, and allows for physical abuse to be seen and not stopped. Here, this author downplayed sexual assault and I hated it.

Skylar deserved so go to jail. the thoughts were along the line "she's just sick, she's doing drugs". News flash, all predators are sick but they still deserve jail time.

And they're all thinking of forgiving and helping her. If this was a girl, being drugged, taken upstairs by a man who successfully raped her, would we be telling her to forgive and try to help him? No we would be hating him and telling her to call the cops. So is it because he's a guy the sexual assault was deemed as okay? The therapist is telling him he'll be fully healed when he forgives his rapist?

What?!? And if I truly loved someone I would NEVER be okay with someone who tried to rape him.

I love this author, I've read maybe 4 or 5 of her books and each has gotten at least a 4 star rating. But this is NOT okay.

Just because he's a man, doesn't mean the damage is any different. She should look up campaigns which increase the awareness of male sexual assaults. Instead in this book, I felt like she promoted the notion that it's not a big deal. Help our the perpetrator because they're sick.

Uhh, Brock Turner is sick, should we have kept him out of jail and helped him and forgave him instead?

I don't know if this stance changes by the end of the book but I was truly disgusted by how casual the author treated sexual abuse.

If you have faced sexual abuse, please call the cops don't just say "it's okay".

Just like the last book, I didn't want to see the forgiveness of such awful people such as this rapist here cause I would've been even angrier, so I stopped right after Mekena and the rape victim (her bf) were thinking of being there for Skyler (the rapist) and helping her in the time of need.

Hell, Markus held more of a grudge against his parents who were merely mean to Mekena than his rapist.

This is not okay... this author needs to stop downplaying verbal, emotional, physical and sexual abuse in her books.

I did give a 2 stars because before the thoughts of forgiving the rape came in, I was enjoying it. But still not as much as other books.

I thought the author would initially treat the subject well considering Mekena didn't place any blame on Markus. He was taken advantage of. But alas, that changed when there were no repercussions for the rapist.

Maybe I'm being harsh ... but I don't think I can ever forgive someone who attempted to rape my loved one. At least not within weeks of knowing.

And then this line:

"Her reasoning?" He asked. "Her reasoning for trying to rape me? There is reasoning for that?"

"No... yes... ugh I don't know. I just feel like that was a cry for help and all I did was get mad and run."

Wtf?!??!? She tries raping him and in stead of seeing how awful it was for him you try to reason why your sister is so messed up that her attempted rape is a cry for help.....

This story was not really what I expected at all and I will do my best to give you what you need to possibly give yourself the opportunity to experience the it without giving too much away. First of all, let me say that things are not always what they seem. I started off the story being righteously pissed off at Markus for his past actions right along with Mekena. The prose was particularly powerful in the expression of her anger. After the truth is revealed, my feelings definitely changed to a myriad of emotions that ranged from rage to sadness but not in the same context. It's sad that sometimes family members are who make your life the hardest. Mekena and Markus had a lot of healing to do in order to be in a healthy relationship independently and as a couple. Their journey was interesting. I laughed. I cried. I felt. Needless to say, the characters were dynamic, complex, and flawed. The plot deals with some very sensitive issues in a powerful way. I was impressed by how they were handled. All in all a strong showing by the author. Safety: There is a perception of cheating that gets clarified. If this is a big thing for you and you need more details, I'm willing to provide more info through PM. There is rape. There is emotional abuse.

When you think hockey romance, automatically Toni Aleo comes to mind and so if you combine hockey and a second chance storyline then you know this book will score major points with me! With her staple of knowing what moves to make, character developments and banter, I definitely I knew Face-Off at the Altar would be one entertaining read!

Face-Off at the Altar is one of those reads that can be read as a standalone so if you haven’t been following the series, it’s no big deal because Toni Aleo did a great job in providing all the right information readers needed to know of secondary key characters.

Markus Reeves is a hockey player who had big dreams of making it to the pros and when he thought he had his shot, he sucked big time. For quite some time, he did his time in the minor league and when his shot to finally get called up to join the majors, he knew he had to change his attitude and the way he plays the game. But what Markus never expected was to face the biggest face-off of his life, his former girlfriend, Mekena Preston.

Mekena Preston knows heartbreak and pain. Hell, she firsthand saw it when Markus and the person she should be able to trust broke her faith. And so when Mekena's career is about to take off, she is presented with one hurdle, Markus. As Mekena is the photographer to Markus’s friends wedding, they are forced to interact and see each other on a daily basis due to the wedding events. But what happens when the truth of what really happened that fateful night comes into play, will Markus and Mekena be facing off in the altar or will they be walking hand in hand? So can two strong willed and stubborn individuals discover that their second chance at love, forgiveness and life is this moment in time?

If you are a fan of second chance romance with a side of angst, drama, banter, and friendship then Face-Off at the Altar might be the book for you. Toni Aleo did a great job in capturing the different ranges of emotions as she allowed readers to feel for her characters from disappointment, regret, love, heartbreak, and of course a sense of hope. So if you are ready for one love story that will have you have eager for two old lovers to face off and discover second chances do exist then this book is for you.

3 Markus and Mekena Stars

Hmmm. I really wasn't sure about this book at times. This is just my opinion, so please bear that in mind , but for me this story wasn't one of the better novels in the series.

First off, I want to make it clear that I am a huge fan of the Assassins / Bellevue Bullies Series' and Toni Aleo was one of two authors who got me hooked on ice hockey heroes. I love most of these characters and it is always with great expectations that I start a Toni Aleo book. So, what didn't quite work this time? I felt it was a bit too long and for the first half of the book it felt like I was reading about Benji and Lucy's wedding rather than Markus and Mekena's second chance. Speaking of Lucy....

SPOILER ALERT************* WTH??? At the rehearsal dinner Autumn (Lucy's Mum) lets slip that Lucy and Markus had sex once. Really??? Maybe I missed that somewhere before but I do not remember that being mentioned before , like AT ALL. And I hated that it came out in this book , let alone at the dinner. Benji had no clue, Makena had no clue, the Sinclair boys didn't know and neither did I!! And Markus and Lucy were really smug about it, which irritated me even more. I have always been unsure of Lucy and she has been one of the characters I have struggled with so maybe that increased my issue with this plot twist. Ugh. Just ugh. And then, Markus makes several references to how gorgeous and hot Lucy is and how he loves her....as a sister. Now, to be clear, Markus is completely hung up on Makena and it is very obvious that he adores her but the historic Lucy debacle made me uncomfortable and I felt there was no need for it. It had apparently happened years and years ago but still...no. And I was really mad at Autumn for being so crass and bringing it up.

What did I like?

Ms Aleo has tackled two really hard subjects in this book and she has done it incredibly well. Sexual assault and drug addiction are explored and it is done with sensitivity and care.
Also, I liked watching the characters of both Mekena and Markus develop. I started out wondering how on earth Markus's character was going to come out of this story well but I ended up liking him, despite the whole Lucy blip. It was great to catch up with past characters, several of whom are pivotal to this story and I am really looking forward to reading about Vaughn and Brie in the next book.

So, not my favourite book in the series but this is only the second book in all 13 from both series' that I have wobbled with (the other being Wanting To Forget) and it definitely ticked all the boxes for many readers. And I am , and always will be a fan of Ms Aleo's hockey hotties.

HEA? Yes - really sweet
Cheating? No - these two are really meant for each other.
Psychotic pets? Stroke of genius including a cat with serious attitude. Loved that.

So disgusting by hypocrites and double standards. Sick and twisted is not a enough word for downplaying sexual abuse. It doesn’t matter who’s the abuser: man or woman- rape, attempt to rape- is the same for both.
If it was a man the abuser I am 100% sure nobody would be trying to find excuses for him.

Face-Off at the Altar is a book 9 in the Assassins series, but you can read it as a standalone.
I haven't read all the books in the series, but it was quite easy to collect all the pieces of the story.
This is a second chance romance and forgiveness, so all you out there who appreciate some good old do overs, you will love it!
So, with that beeing said, I really enjoyed this book.
I loved the writing, the plot, the characters and their interaction.
Marcus's and Mekena's relationship was complicated and felt very real.
Yes, this book has an angsty undertone to it, and at times I felt like there was really nothing that could be done when it comes to the mending of their broken hearts, but in the end, I was not dissapointed.
I highly recommend it!

What would you do when the two people you trusted most more than life itself stabbed you in back? Mekena's life is in a nutshell. Her boyfriend, the love of her life cheated on her. Add in that he cheated on her with her sister. It's like adding salt to an open wound. It gets to much for Mekena, and so she leaves with a broken heart and tortured soul.

Markus... He screwed up BAD!
He knows it too. Ruined the one thing in his life that was truly meaningful. Nothing felt right other than having Mekena in his arms. He is a mess, drowning his sorrows with booze, and sex. Markus is in a downward spiral, and its shows on the hockey team. Once a star player, he just doesn't care anymore.

Mekena has finally moved on with her life, and with her love of photography! She is to photograph Benji and Lucy's wedding. Returning to Nashville is a tough pill to swallow for Mekena, because she sees the one person who crushed her heart into tiny pieces. She has nothing to say. Mekena is finally happy where she is at, and she just want's to go back to her new normal.

Feelings of the past such as heartbreak, loss, and utter betrayal come back to play.
Can they finally let go of the past and move forward.
Will they get the closure they need?

I absolutely loved this book HARD! Markus was an ass in the beginning but he grew on me. Owning up to his mistakes, and wanting to do some right. I got a little teary eyed while reading Face-Off at the Alter. Markus and Mekena have a lot of obstacles they have to hurdle. Lots of angst, and the romance was heartwarming. Definitely on my favorites of 2016!!!

Markus had found the right girl ... he loved her and they took it slow. But then he wakes up with her sister in his bed. Mekena has felt betrayed for so long by Markus and his sister. She has mad sure not to meet them but time didn’t heal the whole in her heart. Markus focuses on hockey. But when one of his friends will marry he”ll see Mekena again where she’ll be the photographer. How will this work out for them? And their feelings? Are they still there? Will they get over the betrayal or is there more to it? Will there be time for forgiveness?

This was the second book only which I read in the Assassins series and same as the previous book I loved it. I do usually love some more drama and suspense in my books but I loved this one nevertheless. I also really enjoyed that we got some more on Lucy, Angie and Benji.

This was another well written story with great characters ... at least most of them. And I also really liked aunt Libby ;)

This is a great mix of the Assassins series and Bellevue Bullies series, and is Markus and Mekena's story. We saw them break up in college due to his perceived betrayal, but now they will be coming face to face again at Lucy and Benji's wedding.

Markus' life is not going how he planned. He feels stuck in a rut and unhappy. His friends, the Sinclair brothers, and even his female best friend, Baylor, got to follow their NHL dreams while he is in Florida on the Assassins farm team. He misses Nashville and his friends...and Mekena though it still hurts to think about her and the situation that ruined them. He is lonely, lost, not playing as well, and using alcohol and women to cope. He needs a chance and motivation to meet his full potential and regain his confidence.

Mekena was young, quiet, and nerdy in college and never understood why Markus liked her. But her heart was broken and she ran off to hide and lick her wounds. She is best friends with Avery Sinclair so she keeps in touch with their group, but has avoided Markus like the plague. She is now a photographer, but is still hurt, angry, and her social life revolves around her fat cat. Her sister's part in her past drama has even made her family life unstable.

Neither thinks they are ready to see the other, but there are some circumstances about their break up that Mekenna does not know...and even some that will take Markus time to find out. But their attraction is as strong as ever and their feelings never really died. They are both still affected by anger and hurt. Markus has been plagued with guilt and coming to terms with what really happened to him. It is hard for Mekena to trust and believe, but Markus is determined to fight for her this time. He now seems to be kind, supportive, and devoted. But Mekena has always been the smart girl who plays it safe, so he will have to convince her to trust again and take a risk on him.

Both of their lives are changing with possible new opportunities. Can they let go of their past and be able to work towards a new future together? There are plenty of potential obstacles in their way due to family dynamics, fears, insecurities, and potential career changes and distance. Their feelings are strong and they have a lot to deal with. Is this fate giving them a second chance, or are they destined to be broken apart again?

I enjoyed getting more time with all of the Sinclair siblings and their mates from the Bellevue Bullies and many of our favorite Assassins and their spouses as well. I have such a girl crush on team owner Elli Adler. I love how they are truly friends and family. This book really brought all of the stories together. I got teary eyed at the parts surrounding Lucy and Benji (Rushing the Goal) and seeing more of their progression. I have been looking forward to Markus and Mekena's story for a long time and it did not disappoint. I really loved them together and truly hoped they could navigate their way to happiness. My only problem with it was the fact that at times it seemed a bit long, especially in the first half. But she also jam packed a lot into this one with both Marcus and Mekena, and also Benji and Lucy.

It is a second-chance, funny, sweet, romantic love story with some definite emotional situations and drama mixed in. I am looking forward to more in this series and I am hoping for Vaughn and Brie. I love their caustic banter and her history.

The Assassins is by far my favorite hockey themed romances thus far and this one was another gem of a romance. While I could not remember all of the details from the previous books to get all of the lowdown from a few characters that we met from the Assassins novels, I could easily follow along and invest myself with the story and its characters. They were very easy to like and relatable.

Sure, I'm not going to lie, I did come across elements of angst, heartbreak, and sometimes frustration and complication that sometimes made me anxious and excited at the same time. But, don't let that interfere with your reading experience.

I really enjoy the voice of author Toni Aleo in this and I think sports fans, obviously hockey ones, and romance lovers will enjoy the journey of both Markus and Mekena. Definitely an one-click no brainer!

BOOK REVIEW: Face-Off At The Altar
BOOK SERIES: Assassins #9
AUTHOR: Toni Aleo
GENRE: Second Chance, Sports Romance
PUBLICATION DATE: December 26, 2016
CLIFF HANGER: No
4 Stars
*This story is for mature audiences only. Contains explicit scenes and language intended for adults 18+
SYNOPSIS:
Markus Reeves is sucking. Big-time. Toiling away on a minor-league hockey team hundreds of miles away from home, he's watching his dreams of an NHL career fade away. Add in the lingering guilt he has over the dramatic demise of his relationship with college girlfriend, Mekena, and he's a mess on and off the ice.

But the family of his heart, the Sinclairs, won't let Markus suffer any longer. When he arrives himself back in Nashville for a trial run on the Assassins, it feels like his life may be making a turn for the better. If only he could get Mekena to forgive him...

Mekena Preston has been hurting since fleeing Nashville following the horror of Markus's betrayal with her sister. Now a professional photographer, Mekena finds herself in the same place at the same time with Markus to celebrate Lucy and Benji Paxton's wedding. Neither of them has been able to move on—and they're starting to wonder if they really want to.

They're headed for a face-off at the altar unless they can confront their past and unearth the truth about what really happened on that fateful night.

MY THOUGHTS:
I was thrilled when I heard there was going to be a new Assassins book coming out! I have read and loved the entire series along with the entire Bellevue Bullies series! So, this story overlaps both series and the beloved characters appear and it felt like coming home. I realized how much I missed these characters. This book can be read as a stand-alone as the authors ties it all up well, but I highly recommend that you read both series just because it is great reading! To top it off, it has two of my favorite genres, second chance romance and sports romance!

This book has so many feels to it, happiness, anger, extreme sadness, longing, betrayal, confusion, and a powerful deep love! The author takes on a subject that is not spoken about often and it was handled in a great way. I had a lump in my throat a few times as the twists in the plot unfolded. I laughed out loud at all the crazy banter. You root so hard for these characters and get so involved in their love story. They truly love each other and they go through a lot to get to their HEA. They are sweet together and they have great chemistry. The secondary characters are terrific and you get some thoughts that maybe the author might have some other characters to write about!

I didn’t want to put Face-Off At The Altar down, which was tough with the holidays, and I didn’t want it to end. I want more! If you love a great second chance sports romance like I do, then this is a book for you!

where to even start with this one???
I haven't met a Toni Aleo book I haven't fallen for. and seriously Marcus amd McKenna were no exception.

their story was so much fun at times, and at other literally broke my heart for them.

Toni has this way of taking super hot sexy hockey player romances and bringing these real life situations that evoke so many emotions into them.

I love the balance sheet offered between the two things. and they make for one amazing story.

I absolutly adored Marcus in this book. he went through so much and you really feel for his character
but yet he is the biggest goofball ever, constantly joking and doing things to make people smile and laugh. he's the kind of person I could see myself with so easily. who knows when to have your back and be there to support you. but also knows how to lighten the mood and make everyone in hot themselves.
also Toni has Marcus go through a situation in this book that I think we as a society tend to sweep under the rug and try to not think about happening. and I find it amazimg how she wrote him to deal with it with such dignity and strength. I hope someone reads this book and it helps them get though the hard time they be dealing with.

and McKenna. God! that girl is amazing. so head strong and mature. she acts so many years behind her age. and yet she has feelings any insecure 20 year old may have.
I found myself relating to her so much. which tends to happen with all the girls in the series. surprise surprise. yes inknow. I actually like a female character. shhhhh. we won't make a big deal of it haha.
But McKenna just amazed me. I felt for her when her sister turned out not to be the person she thought she was, and when she experienced loss. I cheered for her as she theater ed the line with finding here way to Marcus again. and I found myself giggle snorting at all the antics between the two.

to say I adored this book would be an understatement.
if I could give it more than 5 stars I would.

but seriosuly. I can't suggest this book and series more. they are just stunning.

I give ***** FACE-OFF AT THE ALTER 5 STARS *****

This started slow and MeKenna isn’t one of my favourite Aleo heroine, but Markus’ character arc made up for that. It was great to see the funny guy from the Bellevue books grow and mature.

What a fresh look at a traditional plot!

The tired miscommunication plot, in which the heroine believes her hero has cheated on her is one that we’ve seen used time and time again. This trope usually involves another - the Other Woman - who deviously drugs our hero, or coerces him, so that he almost follows through with sleeping with her, believing that he’s cheated on his HEA.

What has always frustrated me about this plot line is the lack of discussion around the fact that this is sexual assault. Despite how alpha or manly our hero is, the lack of consent either because he was drunk or drugged means that he was unable to have consensual sex with the OW. When the truth comes to light both protagonists treat it like a mutual betrayal that they have to move through, without acknowledging that it was in no way the fault of the hero. I’ve even read books where, despite knowing that the hero was too drunk or drugged up to consent to anything, the heroine still forces the hero to grovel in order to win her love and trust back.

This book takes a completely different approach. Markus, our alpha hero, believes he lost the love of his life 2 years ago due to a stupid lapse in judgement where he cheated on Mekena with her own sister. Mekena discovered her sister strutting out of his home looking disheveled where she proceeded to describe all the dirty details of their tryst. Markus, having woken up naked, after his blackout, and with an un-used condom still on faces his “mistake” and the heartbroken wrath of Mekena.

Two years later after seeing our heroine again at a mutual friend’s wedding, Markus realizes that his life has been devolving in part because of his lost love. Once he starts to go over what happened that night he realized that the sister had spiked his drink with Xanax, causing him to pass out while she attempted to rape him.

Once this all comes out Toni Aleo actually puts the taboo name to the crime - rape. I’ve never seen an author be so honest about the experiences of a male protagonist. Rape and sexual assault is a common plot line in romance novels nowadays when it comes to female protagonists, allowing them to be vulnerable while processing the violent assault that was done to them. Its so frustrating not to see the same homage given to male protagonists that participate in similar plot lines, instead having their experiences brushes off or the responsibility of the assault unloaded on to them by their HEAs.

As a person who experiences anxiety and depression, Toni Aleo gave this storyline the justice it deserved. Both Mekena and Markus struggle with the reality that her sister attempted to rape him while resolving their own issues. It was beautiful to see Markus recognize the spiral his life had become and why, and seek help through therapy. Even when further shit hits the fan, Markus uses consistent and open communication with Mekena to keep their relationship strong.

A breath of fresh air, and hopefully the beginning of a beautiful trend in Romance!

Face-Off at the Altar (Assassins #9) by Toni Aleo Toni Aleo is on a winning streak with book nine in Assassins series, FACE-OFF AT THE ALTAR.  Markus Reeves is struggling in the AHL, torn up about how his relationship ended with college girlfriend, Mekena Preston.  Meanwhile, Mekena still feels betrayed by Markus and her sister, Skylar.  Mekena is hired to photograph Lucy Sinclair’s and Benji Paxton's wedding.  Markus is an honorary member of the Sinclair family, so the two are forced to face each other.  This contemporary sports romance is suitable for new adult and adult audiences.  It takes place in Nashville, Tennessee.

We first met Mekena and Markus in the Bellevue Bullies series.  Markus played hockey with the Sinclairs on the Bullies.  Mekena and Avery (Jace Sinclair’s wife) are best friends.  She is also, the younger sister of Skylar Preston, who caused numerous conflicts in the Bellevue series.  I never liked the girl; she is the opposite of Mekena. Mekena and Markus are both likeable characters.  They have a lot of issues to resolve in this story, including family drama on both sides.  They discover some painful information pertaining to their past that they need to heal from.  My heart broke for both characters.

Markus is a great guy.  I felt horrible about what happened to him.  He feels incredibly guilty for what happened with Skyler and beats himself up over it.  He is great with kids.  He is competitive.  He has a wonderful personality.  His Christmas present to Mekena and her mother were extremely thoughtful.  Mekena is a sweet person and a talented photographer.  She is smart.  She is sarcastic.  I love that they both went to counseling.  They are an adorable couple that endure a lot.

I love that Markus is considered family by the Sinclairs and that they look out for him.  I appreciate that they tell it how it is and don’t sugar coat things.  I love the banter between the Sinclairs.  I enjoyed Avery’s cat, Mr. Right.  His name and personality amused me.  Mekena’s Aunt Libby is an interesting character that added a lot to the story.

Toni Aleo continues to amaze me.  Her stories are heartfelt and believable.  I love that they make me experience every emotion.  I cry; I laugh; I get mad and frustrated.  The characters are lovable but have flaws.  They are realistic and people you would want to be friends with.  Her plots have substantial content that is meaningful and relevant.  Her hockey scenes are always easy to visualize and well written.  I cannot wait for her next story.  I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book.

Markus Reeves hasn’t been playing up to his potential. Frankly, he’s been sucking. But his chance to prove his abilities finally comes when he’s called up to the Assassin’s from the farm team he’s been playing with in Florida. And maybe while he’s back in Tennessee he can do something about the guilt he feels about his breakup with his college girlfriend, Mekena.

Mekena has been hurting since the breakup with Markus. She’s rebuilt her life, turning photography into her career, but not only did she lose her boyfriend in the breakup, she lost her family. She can’t move on and now must face Markus as they find themselves face to face once more as their friend’s wedding approaches.

It was hard to root for Markus in the beginning, but as his side of the story came out, my feelings took a complete 180. I haven’t read a book that dealt with the events he was faced with quite like that. It was refreshing, a change of pace, and made for an interesting turn of events.

Makena’s hurt clouds a lot of her actions throughout the book. At times it was easy to sympathize with her, while at others I just wanted her to move passed the pain. But she couldn’t let it go until she had answers, because Markus had meant so much to her.

Their second chance was something I was rooting for early on. Especially as Markus’s narrative made what split them apart not seem as cut and dry as Mekena’s feelings made it. I love a good second chance, and this one had all the best aspects: heartache, time, and conversations to figure out where they went wrong the first time.

This was a great return to the Assassins world. My only complaint is that it really felt like two books -- both in length and in storyline. I would have been pleased as punch if this *was* two books, and I am rarely one to say that about a single couple. Each half of the book was great, but together felt like too much within one cover. Had I stopped reading at the resolution of the first plot arch, read something else, and returned to their story for the second half, I think I would have enjoyed both halves much more.

The Assassin’s family takes some time to warm up to Markus’s arrival on the team, well, everyone except Ellie, who is always warm and welcoming to everyone on her team. This is always such a great team to return to, with their plethora of kids running around and they are only growing as the series continues.

I was gifted a copy in exchange for an honest review.

I used to like this series...or at least some of the earlier books. This one has everything I hate about romances these days.

I don’t want to sound like a broken record. But this series and all the “bad” situation is finally getting to me. I started re-listening because I wanted to catch up on the new books I hadn’t listened to yet.

The stories itself don’t need all the extra drama take this book for example it could have been a beautiful second chance love between Markus and Mekena but the author added all this extra bad stuff. Now if we had just the one thing that tore them apart ok. But then it escalated to the point it was unbelievable, and I almost stopped listening.

I am going to give this series one more chance before I see if maybe my own personal tastes have just changed.

I do love that the narrator changed!!! Jillian Macie did a much better job and sounded like the age of these characters. SO happy about that.

Amazing second chance romance

Face-Off at the Altar was an incredible and emotional journey for Marcus and Mekena. I absolutely loved their goofy side and how hard they loved each other through everything that was thrown at them. Toni Aleo is such an amazing author. I loved getting to revisit the Sinclair's and the Assassins family.

Review by Lisa Kane

Markus Reeves is almost 25 and wants things to change. He’s stuck playing hockey for the Jackson Ninjas but knows the team is falling apart. He wants to play for the Nashville Assassins. He knows Elli Adler can make this happen for him.

He didn't click with the guys, he didn't click with the coach, and most of the time, he just felt like he was worthless.

He’s been playing like crap-too much partying, too much playing around and not enough giving a damn about this team. Marcus seemed to have it all not too long ago but then he screwed it up, first with Mekena Preston. He just about annihilated her and things haven’t been the same since then.

Meanwhile, Markus was almost twenty-five, not where he wanted to be careerwise but also drinking and fucking through his feelings.
And it was getting pathetic.

Mekena Preston is trying to move on with her life. It’s been over a year and a half since she saw her sister, Skylar half-dressed walking out of her boyfriend Markus’ place. Neither one denied that they had slept together. In fact, Skylar seemed to take pleasure in rubbing it in Mekena’s face. Told her she was better off without him-he wasn’t worth it. She hasn’t talked to her sister since and hasn’t had to face Marcus either.

After almost eighteen months of no contact or even seeing his face? She hadn't even Facebook-stalked him. Nothing. Cold Turkey.

But now she’s going to be the photographer at a mutual friend’s wedding and there won’t be any escaping that meeting. To top it all off-Skylar is moving back home and Mekena will be living in the same house. Her parents think she should just let things die down and move on.

"Don't you think this is getting old? It's been well over a year. Time to bury the hatchet, don't you think. You two are sisters."
Mekena scoffed. "Yeah, and one would think that would keep her from fucking the guy I was with. But apparently, it didn't."

Markus is getting a second chance to do things right. Ellie called him up to the big league. His coaches don’t think he has what it takes, but he is going to prove them wrong. Seeing Mekena again makes him realize just what he lost. If only things hadn’t gone down the way they did with Skylar….

"I compartmentalized what had happened with Skylar, and I chalked it up as a loss. But I learned very quickly I couldn't forget you," he admitted, his eyes burning into hers.

There are a lot of twists in Face Off at the Altar-one of them I never considered. Both Markus and Mekena have suffered and are going to come face to face with the demons that are haunting them. Can they get back what they had or will they make the same mistakes over again?

She was his second chance.

“ you’re my best friend, my soulmate, my laugh, my smile, my heart… my everything”

I can’t believe that Face-off at the Altar is the first book that I read in the Assassins series. Even if it’s a standalone, I wished I had read the other books before, to know more about the secondary characters( that I loved) and about Markus and Mekena’s past.

Markus and Mekena return to Nashville to celebrate Lucy and Benji’s wedding. Their pasts and their worlds seem to complicate everything between them, and when they collide, would they make it?
“Stop looking like a shelter dog with no possibility of adoption.”

Mekena is planning to avoid him like the plague, as she never got over the way their relationship ended. Mekena is a strong character, full of hatred and resentment towards the man she thought once was the one, Markus.
“he didn’t want a Tinder kind of love; he wanted a Facebook- official one”

Markus’s life is a mess professionally and personally, and once he gets a shot in the NFL team of his dream, he has no other choice then taking control of his life again. The first thing to do, is to make amend with Mekena and give her an explanation that was a long time due.
“ I’m first in line. Waiting.
There is no line, only you”

I have experienced so many emotions while I was reading Face -off At the Altar , but it felt extremely real and I could completely connect with the story. The writing style is highly addictive with plenty of wit, feelings and humour. Both characters have dark secrets but this is masterfully handled by Toni Aleo. A second chance story that is real, romantic, sweet and sexy.

Toni, what can I say. I'm packing a bag and moving to Tennessee after this one. I need to spend more time with the Sinclair family and all of the Assassins. This book has bumped to my favorite. I know I say that after each one comes out, but this is for sure one of my top reads for 2016.

Here is the simplest of reviews: It really is an epilogue to Rushing the Goal. That's it! Epilogues rock ---so hooha! Great read! No really. Fans of the series will love this book. Lucy and Benji are getting married, again, with a big blow out bash. All the Assassins are attending. This book has it all! All the humor, all the family love and all of the romantic s3xy times you can possibly stand. All in one BOOK!

Did I mention that this is also Markus and MeKena's HEA book? Yes. There is a whole other story line happening here, not just the wedding of all weddings. If you are looking for some heart wrenching reading, pick this one up. If ever there were two people who should be together it's Markus and MeKena. The stars aligned to pull them apart back in college and now fate has aligned to make things right again.

Still a bit speechless over this one. Read the whole series. It really is that good!

This is a second-chance love story. Marcus and Makena dated when they were in college but one incident tore them apart. Now a couple of years later, they both meet at their mutual friend's wedding.
Marcus is completely focussed on his NHL career but can't help feeling there is a piece of him still missing. He is in pain over his fall-out with Makena but he still loves her so much. Maken is a strong and independent woman who dared to pursue her passion of photography as her career. All she wants is to let go of her past and move forward.
The incident that tore them apart was so heart breaking, it moved me. For two such young people in love, this was a big trial. It tested their love, love for their family and support of their friends. The way both of them were able to move forward, shedding away the pain from the past was beautiful and true reflection of great story writing. Loved it!!
