Everly has never been normal. For as long as she can remember, she’s been able to sense others’ despair. To ignore the overwhelming emotions, she keeps her distance from everyone. But when she crosses paths with Nico, his sadness is so unbearable that she can no longer just ignore her gift. Nico Everson has been suffering in silence for hundreds of years. He was once a servant to the Gods, but after plotting to overthrow them, he was cast down to earth and sentenced to a lifetime of carrying the Gods’ despair. As part of his punishment, he’s been forbidden to touch Everly, a Balance who has the power to free him from his curse. The problem is that whenever Nico is near her, all he can think about is touching her. When Everly decides to step out of her comfort zone and try to help Nico, his will to keep his distance fades. He’ll do just about anything to be close to her, so when he receives an offer from an old friend to help him break the curse, he latches onto the opportunity. But with the freedom, comes many risks.

Jessica Sorensen is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author from the snowy mountains of Wyoming. When she's not writing, she spends her time reading and hanging out with her family.
This was the most intriguing and most confusing book I've ever read. I was trying to get into the story but I didn't know what was happening half the time (especially the end). I was lost.
The author used the word "despair" SO MUCH that it lost all it's meaning. At a point I was only reading to see how much more can she use the word.. *hint* she used it 62 freaking times. And yes I counted.
I'm not sure how to rate this book so I'm sticking to an average "safe" rating.
Captivate has an interesting plot and likeable characters. Jessica Sorensen can captivate (see what I did there?) a reader and leave us begging for more. Can't wait for the next book.! Hopefully it is longer!
This book kept my interest but could have been better had it been longer. I agree with a previous reviewer who said it left a lot of unanswered questions. I lose interest in continuing the series when books are this short.
Some Really good moments on grief, guilt, helping each other. Good premise. Like mc. But... so short like ALWAYS. and I guess another book that will never have a next book and a conclusion?????
What just happened? As Everly & Nico get closer, a huge obstacle appears that could keep them apart forever. Really liked it, but the suspense is going to eat away at me. Hope book 2 is not far away. This is a very good short read and introduction into the series.
I loved this book and it's concept. There is good character development and I was easily able to love Nico and Everly. I can't wait to read the next book.
