When an ambassador's children are killed in a deliberate gas explosion in the middle of the night, Violet Despuis is on the case.
Right from the start, not everything is as it seems, as Cassie confirms at the crime scene that one of the victims had been poisoned beforehand.
What Cassie expects to be an open-and-shut case ends up becoming a case of international intrigue and suspicion, with MI5 doing their best to stop Violet and Cassie from pursuing the case.
And what happens when Cassie decides to take a small case on for a friend on her own?
It turns out there's a lot more at stake here in London than just catching a murderer...
The Cassie Coburn mysteries are a cozy mystery series featuring a Sherlock-holmes style sleuth. If you want a light, fun, modern mystery featuring a San Francisco girl totally out of her element in London, and a crazy French woman who happens to be very good at noticing things, then this is the series for you.
Samantha Silver lives in British Columbia, Canada, along with her husband and seventeen-year-old dog named Terra.
When she's not writing cozy mysteries, Samantha loves travelling (she's most recently been to Egypt, Jordan and Florida) skiing, eating Dairy Queen, and complaining about how hard running is.
I am really digging this cozy mystery series. Too bad it looks like it stops after four books. It's easy enough to get through in a few hours (I finished this in like 2 and a half with snack breaks included).
In the first book in the series, we have Cassie Coburn (our Watson) is still going through some depressive episodes. After being injured and unable to continue her medical career, her relocating to London is starting to do the trick though. When she's called up in the middle of the night by Violet Despuis (our Sherlock) she starts to feel her juices going again. The twosome investigate when two children of a prominent ambassador are found dead. All signs point to murder and Cassie and Violet have their hands full working for/against the Triads as well as thumbing their nose at MI-5.
Cassie is a great character to root for. I do wish that we had seen her following up with her mother in this one though. Besides being worried about her adopted cat, she doesn't have a lot going on. I do like her friendship with Brianne as well. I am wondering if Silver has plans to have Cassie going into teaching or something. Even though she can't be a surgeon anymore, it definitely seems like she has a lot to still offer the medical community besides giving Violet the rundown on dead bodies.
Silver does a good job with research on art in this book. I was fascinated by the history of painters using the color white in their works. I also thought the solution was clever and got a kick at seeing Violet show up MI-5.
The setting of London is used very well and we get to read some about London's Chinatown. I also loved we have Violet and Cassie visiting a museum with Violet's descriptions of things as well.
My biggest complaint though is that this book is short (it's only 212 pages) so I balked at spending $3.99 on this and even though I did like it, think it's too much. The next book is 204 pages for $3.99 and the final book is the shortest yet at 167 pages at $3.99 as well. So even though I enjoy this series, I am going to take a hard pass at buying the rest of the books in this series.
This book was funny, and the murder mystery is really interesting and original. I loved the characters, especially Violette, who is original and clever. It was better than book 1 in my opinion, or maybe i was in a reading slump when i read book 1. Loved the cat, who loves walks in Kensington Gardens, and i loved seeing London. We get to see new neighborhoods. Violette and Cassie explain difficult words (for example scientific words). It was a good mystery book !
Sorry for my bad english ! I'll try reviewing in english more in the future.
Cassie gets wakened in the middle of the night by a phone call from her detective friend Violet, who tells her to come look at the liver of a dead man right away in Bombing in Belgravia by Samantha Silver. Cassie wants to return to sleep and go in the morning, but Violet keeps ringing Cassie until the American woman agrees to drag herself out of bed and go to see Violet. As a surgeon who lost her career when she was injured in a car accident, Cassie has become Violet’s medical advisor and Watson in this pastiche of the Sherlock Holmes books that never actually references Holmes. When Cassie arrives at the address, she finds a home that has been blown up in a gas explosion, killing two8 8ýw,and o. Violet takes Cassie to the body of a woman and asks whether she was killed in the explosion or died before the event. Noticing the scent of garlic, the pair of women deduce the presence of arsenic and realize that the woman was dead prior to the explosion. When the police realize that the victims are the daughter and son of the British ambassador to Taiwan, the case becomes even more important, bringing in MI-5, the internal security services, who pay Violet a visit, ordering her under the threat of arrest to keep away from the case.

Trying out a new (to me) author _ Samantha Silver today. I found myself transported to London and into the middle of a puzzling investigation. I loved the book! The characters were well written and very realistic. I love being able to pick up a book and read it through in an afternoon. Five stars for an excellent read!
As this book opens, Cassie is woken up by a call from Violet Despuis. They met in the last book at the police station and formed an alliance of sorts. Violet needs Cassie to look at a liver for her to determine if poison was involved. Cassie had been in an accident that took away her promising future as a surgeon and Violet is capitalizing on her knowledge.
Violet has her own way of investigating and only DCM Williams is tolerant of her. The others would like to see her are barely civil. In this particular case, she knows the case won't remain with the locals. The house is owned by an ambassador. His children Jenny and Kevin live there while attending the London School of Economics. There are two fatalities and one severe injury from the blast that took out the front of the house. The dead are Jenny and Kevin. It's Violet and Cassie's determination that Jenny was poisoned prior to the explosion that was likely triggered by Kevin when he flipped on a light as he entered. The injured is a man who was walking home from the train, so an innocent bystander.
Violet is also not surprised that MI5 is taking over the case, but that isn't going to stop her. Especially after what she and Cassie learn at the morgue.
I get a kick out of Cassie walking her cat Biscuit like she's a dog. The cat however enjoys it thoroughly, especially the attention such a novelty attracts.
The lead carbonate is a big clue and leads Violet on a whole other track, while MI5 is just looking at the murders.
We meet some very interesting characters as this story progresses. Violet and Cassie are quite the team and always one step ahead of MI5. Violet brings in DCI Williams since the theft is in his jurisdiction and she would give him the credit for solving it.
Cassie once again finds herself assisting Violet with another investigation. Cassie receives a call from Violet in the early morning hours to come to the scene of a bombing to tell look at the deceased liver so she's know if the blast had killer her, or if she was poisoned.
It turns out that the people caught in the explosion were the children of foreign diplomats. MI 5 have shown up to warn Violet off of their investigation as they don't need the help of amateurs getting in their way.
Violet of course ignores them and goes on to look for the killers as well as the art theft of a major painting connected to the deceased.
Pro's: This story has developed characters, as well as some humor as a few red herrings.
Con's: The MC of this story is actually the sidekick of the self-proclaimed greatest detective ever. She is kind of a mix of Sherlock Holmes and Poirot with about 10x the ego of both of them combined. Never the less, it is an enjoyable story.
If you like cozy mysteries and Sherlock Holmes with women as protagonists then this book is for you. If you've not read the first one, I'd start with the first one as that "sets up" all the background, but if you can't for some reason you wouldn't be terribly lost starting here. I do not normally like "cozy" mysteries. However the first of this series caught my eye and I was in a fanciful mood and gave it a try. I fell in love with the characters and love the Sherlock Holmes feel of it. I've already purchased book #3.
I read the first two Cassie Coburn books and am looking forward to reading the third. I highly recommend them. Entertaining characters with amusing quirks along with unexpected plot twist. Thanks for sharing your hard work of a n excellent story on kindle unlimited!
When two ambassadors children are killed in a bomb explosion in their house, Cassie and Violet are on the case. Stolen paintings and the Chinese triads. This book is an adventure from start to finish
I didn’t love the first book, wanting it to be longer, but I have come to appreciate the quick read of this series. It is kind of the book version of a weekly tv show vs a longer novel being a movie. I like the quirkiness of Violet and the reality of Cassie.
Cassie and Violet are at it again and they do NOT disappoint! The mystery, as well as the dialogue amongst the characters are so very far from dull. I'm looking forward to book #3 already!
2.5 stars Another cozy mystery, but this one with a young heroine. These are pretty short and diverting - not great literature and I'm not in love with the characters, but works as a palate cleanser.
