Suti and the Broken Staff

Rate this book
In this sequel to the popular Imhotep series, a 14-year-old scribe named Suti is sent from the battlefield of Megiddo to bring Queen Menwi to Pharaoh Thutmose III. Discovering that the queen is missing, the scribe ties the queen’s disappearance to a mysterious Medjay warrior, Suti travels the length of the Two Lands in search of the missing queen and her escort, Lord Imhotep. After braving the treacherous cataract at the far reaches of the river Iteru, Suti falls prey to the corrupt governor of Ta-Seti and a murderous giant. Beaten and tortured, the young scribe escapes to continue his search for the queen. When at last he discovers the truth, Suti realizes that he possesses a secret that could end the reign of the world’s most powerful leader.

I've always been drawn to science fiction. The seed for "Imhotep," my first novel, was an incident that happened in 1980, when my wife and I were in Egypt.
In the Imhotep series I explore the information divide in modern America. In a new series of books, I'm planning to explore the development of personal identity.
Of course, this is all wrapped in a gripping story with fleshed-out characters.
I'm also starting an exciting experiment on crowd sourcing creativity. For more on that, take a look at my Patreon page
Married since 1980, Deb and I have three children. Back in 2012 we became vagabonds (an experience we wrote about in Vagabond Retirement). So far, its been a blast.
Cheers! Jerry

Never miss a book by Jerry Dubs,

I am an avid reader of Ancient Egypt well I read most Ancient history of great nations, mostly because of the things they achieved, wrote n built. Jerry Dubs can take me back to Ancient Egypt and I love it,the way he writes about the people who are there, I first read, Imhotep n how he got to be in Ancient Egypt and I fell in love with the time n the Pharo Djoser, he had the first pyramid built by Imhotep, the wife of Imhotep was flat chested, she had a cast in her eyes but all through the book I thought she was very beautiful, because he did, I saw through his eyes. Now I am on the last book of them, the Imhotep story I found it totally believeble, I will read them all again. If you want a great story, start with the first book. Please give them, Jerry Ruben Imhotep a chance. For your self. I hope I will see more book's by Jerry Dobs, I am definitely a fan of him. Keep them coming Amazon. Love to all the history nut's like me. Trisha CSX

Pure magic

This is a five star. This book ties up loose ends in the tale of the great Imhotep. However Suti is a worthy hero in his own right. He is a scribe and it amused me to see the connection between the idea of a scribe and a writer. Writers are like Suti in that they hear the ideas and words of something greater than themselves and pin them down on paper. Suti is not an action hero but when necessary he shows courage and endurance. A good man to have on your side. In addition the lesser characters are well drawn and bring the people of an ancient civilisation to life. I enjoyed my stay in the Two Lands and will be sad if the writer does not place another story there. If you have not read any of this series before this book should intrigue and excite you into going back to the first. A great journey. A great read. Enjoy!

And everything comes full circle! This is the last in a most wonderful, moving series. This is the most beautiful story I have ever read. It involves, science, history, nature and humanity. There is history woven into fiction. You cannot tell where it starts and where it ends. It was masterfully done. I am beyond words! I can just recommend this series. Start from the beginning and just keep reading. You will not be disappointed.

Fantastic Story

I enjoyed every one of Jerry's five books concerning time travel and the life of "Imhotep" and Tim Hope. Once I had read the first book I was hooked. I bought and read all of these exciting stories in about one week. I am hoping that Jerry Dubs will continue this series with several more books, the possibilities are so exciting. My thanks to Jerry for this wonderful adventure series.

Couldn’t put them down !

The first four books starting with Imhotep have been in my library awhile until I decided to see what they were about. I am so glad I did. This wonderful series is so fun and interesting. I love the people and the description of how they lived. I am so happy that the 5th and 6th books were added.

I was reading along and suddenly it ended, what happened?

I love his writing that isa why I read his other books, is there another book where this one abruptly ends? I'll read that one too just to find out what happens!

ambiguous and disappointing ending.

It seemed very short compared to Dubs other novels of Egypt, and the ambiguous, unexpected and disappointing ending. I'm looking forward to a longer sequel.

I enjoy the series and will definitely read others. A fun, not too serious read that has a nice flavor of historical Egypt.

As great as always, nice continuation of the tale of the great Imhotep.

I loved all of Jerry Dubs' Imhotep books, so when I saw that he had decided to continue exploring the world of the Two Lands that he had built so well in the Imhotep series, I was thrilled.

Suti is a brilliant character and he shares some of the characteristics that I loved about Imhotep. His determination to put things right and find truth is admirable -- he is no fighter, but when he sees something wrong happening in front of him he will willingly throw himself in harm's way to stop it. I also think that people who love to read and write -- like me -- will appreciate Suti's acknowledgement of the importance of language and writing and stories. There was a cool parallel drawn in this book between the scribes of ancient Egypt and the modern-day writer, and it was interesting to see that expressed.

The adventure that Suti embarks on is quite thrilling at times. And although there are parts of the story that are not so exciting, such as when Suti is trying to figure out things that I already knew from having read the Imhotep series, it was still intriguing to see how he came to his conclusions about what happened, and the thought process behind that.

This novel gives an extra bit of closure from a few of the loose ends we were left with at the end of the Imhotep books. It was an entertaining read, I would recommend it to fans, and it could even be a good introduction to Dubs' ancient Egyptian series -- but I do think it's probably wiser to read the Imhotep novels before this one so that you have more context going into it and won't be confused by anything.

Elementary

This story was as much a detective story, as it was an adventure. The Scribe Suti, is like an ancient Sherlock Holmes, as he discovers the truth, behind the mystery of, the disappearance of, Queen Menwi, her newborn son, Imhotep and his wife Akila.
Suti uses deduction and observation, very much in the same way, that the famous 19th century does. Although, he does get a bit of help from the reluctant, at times, Charioteers who accompany him.
