He would slit their throats, then rob them and dump their bodies into the river... Steven and Roy return as the haunted mysteries of Eximere deepen! When the ghosts of grotesque, bloated bodies invade Eximere, Steven and Roy investigate only to find that other people are exploring the Unser Mansion above them, just like they did years ago. Somehow their arrival has released the spirits of dozens of drowning victims, who now wander the halls. Secret rooms with no windows or doors hide new mysteries inside the mansion. It will take knowledge of the Dark River to figure things out. Although the Dark River is accessible from Eximere, Roy forbids it, and Steven has promised never to go there. When Derick arrives to conduct his own investigation, it becomes clear that the Dark River is where the answers to James Unser’s mysteries lie. Will Steven travel there, breaking his promise to his father? The Port of Missing Souls is Book 12 in The River series. In it, many of the River universe storylines come together to weave a complex tale of one man’s evil quest for power.

THE PORT OF MISSING SOULS, by Michael Richan is the 12th book in the River Series, and the one that long-standing fans of the River Universe have been waiting for! As the different River branches have had occasional crossovers, the story lines of the original River branch (Steven/Roy/Eliza), and that of The Dark River branch (Derick/A) have been getting closer and closer to an inevitable collision. In THE PORT OF MISSING SOULS, their stories finally merge together, exposing the long hinted at connection between Eximere, Unser, and the Dark River's self-proclaimed ruler, "LeFever".
Steven and Derick are given some incredible new depth to their individual characters, and previously half-explained "gifts" that each possess are fully explored. Characters such as Eliza and Roy remain true to their established personalities, and others from the River Universe are given some pivotal roles as well.
Here, Richan delves more fully into the Dark River, detailing how it once was, and how and when it began to change for the worse. The Empire that LeFever constructed for himself there, rivals some of the worst things brought out from greedy, controlling minds. Despite the depravity of things as they currently stand, we are given a glimpse at a--still dangerous--but less demented "other side" to the River.
This novel was paced with precision--allowing things to unfold and merge at a rapid, yet still understandable, speed. For longtime readers of this series, several back stories are hinted at, and many new challenges introduced. By the end of this book, I was emotionally drained from all of the happenings and the situation.
A fantastic collision of all three Branches, and an incredible treat for lifelong River followers.
I actually found myself holding my breath more than once as this River story was progressing towards the end!! You find yourself so immersed in what’s going on, that you feel like you’re actually there along with the characters. I cant wait to see what happens next in this series!
I just love all the books that overlap to this series. It's like catching up with old friends that live extrordinary lives! Can't wait to hear more from my friends in The River!
Like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle- people, places and things continue to fit neatly into place. I feel things wrapping up and with a sense of nostalgia, I approach the end...
Eximere has been a beautiful retreat with numerous opportunities to learn about the supernatural world, or as the gifted call it "The River". A father and son team had found this retreat during an escape from a mansion they were lured to where they would have been separated from their gifts. Located far below the evil mansion was perfection. A large home that cared for itself. The back porch that looked over a beautiful yard. Always the perfect temperature, a mild breeze and no neighbors. They should have known once they found the strange cemetery that not everything was perfect in Eximere. Roy and his son Steven only shared the beauty of Eximere with one other gifted, Eliza. They did all they could to keep Eximere a secret. Mainly because of the vast amount of paranormal equipment and historical experience ledgers, any gifted - good or bad - would want to claim possession to this Disney Land. Sadly, as time went on, events started occurring where they had no choice but to seek out help to keep Eximere going. In no time, at least 4 or 5 more people learned of this phenomenon.
This story begins with Steven waking at Exemire to find a naked, water logged ghost in bed with him. He runs to find his father sitting on the porch where they can see many more ghosts just walking around. Most of them with their throats slashed, bloated with water where their eyes should be. When the ghost of Jason, the son Steven had accidentally murdered, comes to warn them of the impending danger; everyone, alive or dead, now descend upon the once tranquil and secluded Eximere.
Strangers and acquaintances from several past adventures start arriving at Eximere. It will take all these intruders, as Roy likes to call them, and for Steven to break his oath to his father to travel to the Dark River to fix this disaster. Roy's anger towards Steven and mistrust of everyone involved only make the challenge worse.
This is an incredible compilation of all the hard work author Michael Richan has done with to date. This book is filled with characters, (human and otherwise) and adventures that will keep any reader on the edge of their seat. Even though a well seasoned "River Reader" will recognize the past, it is the perfect book for a new fan to start with. It offers an incredible insight to each of the three series the author has created. This turn in the River offers a wild ride to anyone who dares. I challenge you to take it on.
I loved seeing the River and the Dark River characters coming together. This is (at least in my mind) a long awaited merging of most of the characters of the various "River" series, and this book was a truly satisfying read. It's been a crazy intense journey for Steven, Roy, Eliza, and Derick, and although the hard part is seemingly done, I have a feeling they've just scratched the surface....
The book I've been waiting for. Roy and Steven are doing their thing in Eximere, they're joined by Abe, Terrell, Eliza and Winn. They also finally meet Derick, our Dark River expert. Together they fight against Unser and take over Eximere. I was concerned when I found out this book was bringing all three of the River Series' together that it was going to be the end. I'm so glad that doesn't seem to be the case. I've grown to love reading about these people. I'm a River fan! Just wish I could join them in the flow.
