Chasing the Yeti by Jeyamohan, tr from Tamil by V Shyamala, begins in the Depsang Valley in Eastern Ladakh. In these snow laden plains where the wind howls, a military surveillance team spots footprints, impressions at least three times bigger than a human footprint. Investigations until then yield no satisfactory explanation on the mystery and Major Pandian is summoned to find answers. Do the footprints belong to the Himalayan Snowman like locals claim? Or is it a conspiracy hatched by the enemies?

Major Pandian along with Dr Divakar who has been researching in this region for the last 6 years embark upon a mission. A 10 yr old, Ladakhi boy named Kim who claims that he has seen the snowman joins them. Is Kim speaking the truth or holding back a few secrets? If the Snowman isn't a figment of imagination, how does he survive in this inhospitable environment? The quest for answers results in a thrilling and fantastical adventure, a perilous journey that opens up discussions on natural evolution, anthropology & Buddhist philosophy and unravels basic life truths that have evaded human grasp over the course of his becoming ‘civilized’ & ‘developed’.

Having savoured the author's short stories, I feel his storytelling is like a plant sprouting lateral roots in myriad directions,a single plot point has multiple offshoots. Here too, he dwells upon physics of reflection & mirrors, how Himalayas were formed, legends of yetis, yalis and other mythical figures, briefs about the Indian army, provides a sketch of many scientists who studied evolution in horses, monkeys and man, human psychology & unearthed archaeological evidence. This approach, though offers a wealth of information, leaves a sense of disarray or cumbersome feeling at times.

Even as the mystery of the snowman clears up, the author's profound questions on what defines ‘humanity’ requires the book be read by young & old together, though it's labelled as ‘children fiction’. With a dash of adventure & magic, a simple, conversational tone in writing, addled with boxes of facts at the end of each chapter (like in pic 2), this is an enjoyable read!

இவரின் அறிவியல் புனைகதையின் “என்ன சார்” கிளிஷெக்கள் அதிகம் வருவது மட்டும் கொஞ்சம் ஆயசத்தை அளித்தது.

மற்றபடி கதையின் மையமும் அது கொடுக்கும் தரிசனங்களும் அருமை.

I remember reading this story published in dinamani's siruvarmani, weekly supplement. But it was stopped abruptly. Found this book few days ago and finished reading the ending.

It is a fantasy adventure story. The sentences and words used are simple throughout the book. Kids will enjoy this.

I loved how Jeyamohan refuses to make the Yeti merely a creature waiting to be discovered. The mystery gradually opens into larger questions about nature and our place within it. What happens when human beings enter a landscape believing they can understand, measure and ultimately possess everything they encounter?

There is a beautiful undercurrent of restraint here. The mountains seem to ask us to observe rather than conquer, to listen rather than explain. Science has its place, but the book also acknowledges that there are things faith and imagination can perceive that scientific certainty cannot always contain.

One of the things I particularly enjoyed was the way factual nuggets appear at the ends of chapters. They add another layer to the reading experience, connecting the fictional journey with the real worlds of wildlife, nature and the Himalayas.

The narrative has the quality of a mountain river: it meanders, pauses, changes direction and occasionally surprises you. And somewhere along the way, the Yeti becomes less important than the questions raised by the search itself.

There is also a sense of wonder in the book. Jeyamohan's imagination allows the mountains to become almost another character, ancient and watchful, reminding us that the natural world does not exist merely for human discovery.

The story left me thinking about human overreach and our persistent desire to turn every mystery into an answer. Perhaps some mysteries need to remain mysteries.

I completely loved reading Chasing the Yeti. The font and text size made it incredibly comfortable to read, and I appreciated how unfamiliar words and terms were explained as they appeared.

I picked up the book because Jeyamohan wrote it, and my curiosity stayed throughout. What I enjoyed most was how informative it was—I felt like I was learning something new on almost every page. I especially loved discovering more about the Yeti, a subject I knew very little about before.
One small suggestion would be to consider using more inclusive terms such as “humans” and “humankind” instead of frequently using “men” and “mankind.”

Overall, Chasing the Yeti was a fascinating, informative, and accessible read. I truly enjoyed learning about the Yeti and all the intriguing details surrounding it.

This was my first book by Jeyamohan, and I picked it up purely because I had been wanting to read something by the author. The story begins in the snow covered mountains of Ladakh, where Major Pandian, Dr Divakar and a young Ladakhi boy named Kim set out to investigate mysterious, enormous footprints believed to belong to the legendary Yeti. What starts as a simple search for a mythical creature slowly turns into a much bigger adventure through the mountains.

I really enjoyed how the storyline combines adventure with history, science, mythology and the fascinating world of the Himalayas. As the trio follows the clues, the book keeps introducing little details about the region, the formation of the Himalayas, the 1962 war, Neanderthals and even the lives of people who have adapted to these harsh landscapes. At times, these informational sections do slow down the pace, but they also make the journey feel more immersive and meaningful.

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I went in because of Jeyamohan, and came out with a story that made me curious about the mountains, the Yeti and everything surrounding this mysterious world. It is a simple yet thoughtful adventure, especially for readers who enjoy stories that entertain you while also leaving you with something new to learn.

இந்த கதையை படிக்கத் தொடங்கிய உடனே, எங்கேயோ படித்த ஞாபகம் பின் மண்டையில் உறுத்திக் கொண்டே இருந்தது. அதற்கான விடையை திரு. ஜெயமோகன் அவர்களே இந்த புத்தகத்தின் முன்னுரையில் தந்து விட்டார். நான் சிறு வயதாக இருந்த போது ஒரு செய்தித் தாளில் இது தொடர் கதையாய் வந்து, பின் சில காரணங்களால் நிறுத்தப்பட்டது என்று தெரிய வந்தது.
திரு மோகன் அவர்கள் குறிபிட்டது போல கிராமப்புற மாணவர்களுக்கு இது போன்று வழிகளில் தான் கதைகள் படிக்க கிடைக்கும். அப்போது திடீரென்று இந்த கதை நின்று விட்டது எண்டு நான் அறியாமல், கொஞ்ச நாள் தேடினேன். பிறகு, காலப் போக்கில் மறந்தும் போனேன். அனால், முடிவு பெறாத ஒரு கதை, அதற்கான தாக்கம் நேற்று வரை இருந்து கொண்டு தான் இருந்தது. இந்த புத்தகத்தை படிக்கும் பொது அப்டி ஒரு பரவசம் - மீண்டும் குழந்தை பருவம் போன மாதிரி.! ஒரு நிம்மதி பெருமூச்சு, சந்தோஷம் எல்லாம்...!

The book starts with a quest to find out about this “Pani Manithan” (Snowman) who keeps leaving giant footprints near the Himalayas. Indian Army appoints one Major Pandian to check this out. He thinks it’s a monkey. Or probably China’s way of confusing Indian Army by leaving such fake footprints. He sets out into the Himalayas to see if his theory was right. A scientist + Doctor “Dhivakar” was appointed to help him. On the way to find this Snowman, they run into “Kim” a Ladakh Kid who had encountered a Snowman before. These three people then venture into the Himalayas in search of the so-called Snowman.

I knew how the book would end as soon as I reached this part. It is a children’s story, so it wasn’t that big of a surprise when it ended. But, what makes this book special is the amount of research the author had done (or probably a simple Google search! Who knows?) to make this an interesting reading. I kept searching Google about the facts that are mentioned in this book, and it kept surprising me. How little we know!

There are a few illustrations in the book to help children visualize the fantasy the author is describing. One sentence, as the author says before the starting of the book, isn’t longer than ten words, so it is an easy read for anyone (even those who know very little Tamil). There are a few spelling mistakes that irritate sometimes, but overall this book is for everyone (not only for the children).

Though the adventure and the fantasy will lure the children into the book, I doubt if the philosophy and the talk about the “Conscious, subconscious and unconscious (even collective unconscious)” would interest them. What starts as an adventure, soon turns into a thriller and then dives deep into the fantasy. And finally, spill some of the philosophical flowers here and there in the end, there you have it! The Snowman!
