If you never read any of GA Aiken's dragon books you MISSED OUT!!! Badly!!!
This series is an epic showdown of huge proportions. From the very first book, it's been a steady build up. Book 9 Bring the Heat had a satisfying and bloody battle at the end that made me smiling crazily.
After so many years, and so many books, this series has been a fabulous preoccupation for me. Every time I read a GA Aiken book I'm usually cackling like a crazy person. Chuckling and laughing out loud and whenever I close a book I wish I had the next one already in my hands.
I love fantasy, but what I love even more are characters that are complex and fucking hilarious. And this author has this skill down pat. Not only can she write the funniest and most unique personalities, she is a master storyteller. In 9 books, this world of hers has thrilled, captivated and fascinated me in such a long-lasting way not very authors are able to do.
Of course through the years I have loved some characters more than others, and I wished she would give Annwyl the Bloody and Dagmar Reinholdt more books and scenes. I can never get enough of either. And now their kids are as enthralling as their parents. I hope she'll continue writing, there are so many more stories to tell.
Bring the Heat (Dragon Kin #9) by G.A. Aiken was exactly as I hoped. The story continued in a complex and multistory arc that kept me glued to the seat but also had my head spinning at times - the good way.
In my opinion Aidan and Branwen's love story was sweet, a slow burn and fitting to their characters, but it wasn't what kept me as enthralled as I was. The continuing story arc and the never ending cameos of beloved characters was what I loved about this book the most. If I had a say in it, I would ask the author to give some of the old characters a second book, or just use main characters that we all love and adore before adding more and more new players to the story.
At the end, all of the characters from the former books were fighting this war, and I don't really need to meet any more new characters to make this story even more interesting than it already is. I want to read more about the people that have been already introduced. I noticed that I can remember best the characters from the first 6 books. I have the deepest connection to Annwyl, Dagmar, Izzy, the twins, and Keita and wish to read more of them instead of adding new people to the plot line.
But nevertheless, I can't get enough of this series, and never will. And it sounds like she is not done with the dragons yet which makes me VERY happy!!!
I love her writing style and whatever she writes even as her alder ego Shelley Laurenston, I will be reading it. :D

especially those murderous ones made of shit and mud
I adore this author's humour and characters, even though, they turned a bit repetitive lately. The feeling of deja vu of a deja vu, and the disappointing fast motion end to the plot line that's been building for the last few books are the reasons for the missing stars. The rest is all shit and chuckles...
Multiple tentacles snaked out from between her legs and out her back, shooting across the room and impaling the guards in their chests —near their hearts but not through them.

Audio April 2019: Oh the joy's of returning to the Dragon Kin series. I love these hilarious bloodthirsty dragons who are fiercely loyal and have unconditional love. The audio was enjoyable and a delight. As always the banter comes across so well in audio. We are treated to a sweet romance, another war and it’s politics that go along with it, and the roles of each character that help to end this war.

Oh the joy of returning to the Dragon Kin series. I love these hilarious bloodthirsty dragons who are fiercely loyal and have unconditional love. The books tend to be over the top and ruthless, but so much fun!
It took me a moment to get on the same page. Several years have passed from Feel the Burn to Bring the Heat and I had to remember what was happening. The big war that the series has been building up to is now going to go down. The Zealots have made their move.
The romance between Brannie and Aiden doesn’t start right away. Ya, their is something their, but they don’t see it until later and then things heat up quickly.
The banter is phenomenal; between all the characters. It’s one thing that I have come to love and enjoy about this series is that it’s present throughout the books. I also have come to love how Aiken writes strong and independent heroines who are also quite ruthless.
I was surprised to get a lot of Keita. Well not surprised that she shows up like other previous characters, but that she plays a big part in this book. Keita and Briannie are cousins. It was fun and made me laugh watching these two fight with each other.
Bring the Heat brings us romance, another war, and it’s politics. This novel defiantly lived up to my expectations.

I kind of liked this...kind of didn't...
I'm feeling lazy so I am going to list my mixed up thoughts about this book in a list:
1. The romance was mainly background stuff. Which, is fine as long as the story is strong enough to hold my attention...
2. ...the story wasn't that strong. It didn't really hold my attention. It was spread over too many characters and although what was happening was important it wasn't necessarily interesting.
3. I loved seeing all the characters from the previous books. It's fun to revisit characters you know and love. However, it was only quick shallow visits, so although it was nice, it was ultimately unsatisfying.
Overall thoughts:
I thought this book was okay, not my favourite book in the series, I just didn't feel like there was much to really delve in to. The romance was light touch, the story didn't give you much to hang on to, I just felt there wasn't much to be drawn in by.

An exciting addition to this series, I devoured this book quickly and happily. I have to say that this is NOT a standalone, and I think this would be difficult for anyone to follow without knowing the history. The series has been building towards a confrontation between Salebiri, the God Chramnesind and the Mad Queen of Garbhan Isle, Cadwaladyrs and the House of Gwalchmai fab Gwyar and the battle finally comes to a rousing conclusion here (with a hint of things to come). All of the series favorites are involved in this one and all the ongoing plot points worked seamlessly to give me a fantastic, exciting tale.
The only thing that took a teeny, tiny, itty, bitty bit off the rating for me was the romance (aka the thing that brings me to the yard, every time). While I like Brannie and Aiden, and their relationship was fun, you could honestly take it out of the equation and this book would have functioned just as well. It didn’t feel essential, and while I liked the characters I wasn’t completely bowled over by them either.
Having said that, if you love this series I would highly recommend picking up this book. If you haven’t read the series but you love fantasy series with lots of humor and action-adventure and intricate familial relationships, I’d also encourage you to pick this up...after you start at the beginning.

It's Aidan the Divine and Branwen The Awful's story but there's two side story of keita searching for ren and lord salebri ,Chramnesind's priests and zealots war between dragons and annwly. So there's too much going on , not much time for romance between aidan and branwen . This book is lack of some romance really but so much fun and jokes and moments to crack up . I'm in love with all these dragons and their crazy family. I can't think a life without them . I can read to the age of 80 and still can laughing out loud for every line. I love new characters like ren and his mom and siblings . Everyone torture their most loved ones just for shits and giggles :D I wonder what the hell brigida was thinking choosing that boy as an apprentice. She's the real enemy now , or what. So exciting :D Can't wait for the next one.

Oh the joy that is picking up a Dragon Kin book cannot be overemphasised. These larger than life bloodthirsty characters are simply hilarious but watch out because they are fiercely loyal even if admittedly at times act quite insane!
The Zealots are getting ever more bold and closing in on the Dragons of the Southlands and as this story begins a select few are chosen to travel to the Eastlands seeking aid from the Empress Xinya . Amongst them are Keita royal princess and notorious poisoner, Branwen a fierce soldier and three of the Dragon Queens chosen Mi-runach. Two of the Mi-Runach might be lumbering brutes but Aidan is most charming and used to behaving diplomatically no matter what the provocation. He will need to keep a clear head as Brannie and Keita constantly clash whilst searching for the missing Ren who just happens to be the favourite son of the Empress who believed he was safe within the Southlands. The war is coming to ahead and allies are precious but with Gods meddling who will rise victorious?
This series is simply amazing and I really think to get the best out of it you should read the books in order. This book particularly wraps up an arc that's been pulling the last few books together and speaking of together this story is very much an ensemble piece. We have multiple directions to follow with characters from previous books and it's a real pleasure seeing how everything connects. Not everything is as it seems though so do keep reading until the end as ooh this author really does know how to keep her readers excited!
This isn't a criticism but I do feel I should mention the romance between Aiden and Brannie as it's quite different to the couples who featured in the first books. Initially quite tame and more a case of wham bam thank you Dragon and I missed the passion that I associate with these Dragons. However the lack of angst and feuding between the couple meant the author could concentrate on the rest of her story with so many threads and different tangents.
This book just like the rest of the series is full of laugh out loud moments as these insanely fierce characters pit themselves against not just enemies but their own kin! Never a dull moment as they are bold, brash and bloodthirsty! Another solidly entertaining story and I honestly wish I could have read it slower as now I have to wait to see what the Dragon Kin will get up to next.

Branwen (Brannie) the Awful of the Cadwaladr Clan, Captain of the First and Fifteenth Companies of the Dragon Queen’s Armies, Colonel of the Ninety-Eighth Regiment of the Southland Armies, daughter of Ghleanna the Decimator and Bram the Merciful (Dragon on Top), has much more important things to tend to other than Aiden the Divine’s ego. Like saving a nation from a vengeful God who seeks to destroy them all. Of course, once this war is over and they emerge triumphant, who knows what could happen.
Bring the Heat picks up with Aiden the Divine, whom we first met in Feel the Burn. He has come back to the Southlands and reunited with his beloved Queen, the Mì-runachs, and his best friend, Brannie. He joins Brannie on the field as she leads her companies against some of Chramnesind’s zealots. When the mountains become sinkholes due to magic, Aiden rushes to save Branwen from being buried alive and expects some gratitude.

Brannie’s not happy to have been pulled from the battlefield and her displeasure has her judging every move Keita makes.

Add in the Black Bear Riders of the Midnight Mountains of Despair in the Far Reaches of the Steppes of the Outerplains (God, I love these names) and a comfortable friends to lovers romance and you will be belly laughing till the very last page. Readers who have felt that the last few books haven’t done much to advance the arc will rejoice in the amount of acreage covered in here.

The continuously evolving world and multi plotted storyline keeps readers on their toes as Aiken gathers all the loose threads through the series and begins to wrap them up, putting the finishing touches on the larger picture as she brings this particular arc to a climatic finish. I love the massive reunion of characters. Almost everyone we’re ever met in this series makes an appearance as the Southland Empire and their allies all come together to interfere, insult, threaten, offer useless advice, and annoy each other to distraction as they each play their part in the war against Chramnesind. Their antics keep the story moving along at a rapid pace.
“There’s nothing wrong with a little crazy…never forget that. Hold on to that. It may save your life.”
“That’s really sweet. But we both know I’m way more crazy that a little crazy.”
Friends to lovers is a favorite trope of mine and Aiken perfects it with this couple. I absolutely loved Brannie and Aiden. Intelligent, witty, and loyal, these two are born warrior protectors. Some readers may be disappointed to see this couple isn’t as volatile as some of the other couples; therefore creating a more laid back and slow burning romance. Delightful banter and steamy sex scenes further solidifies this couple’s compatibility as they accept their attraction and act on it without a lot conflict, fuss, or drama.
“No f*cking as dragons. I totally understand it…like prostitutes that won’t kiss their clients.”
“Are you calling me a whore?”
“No. Do you want me to? I’ve known a few she-dragons who liked that sort of-”
“No. I don’t want you to.”
“Oh. All right. But what a dirty…and naughty?”
“Yeah, that’s all right.”

Friends to lovers is a favorite trope of mine and Aiken perfects it with this couple. I absolutely loved Brannie and Aiden. Intelligent, witty, and loyal, these two are born warrior protectors. Some readers may be disappointed to see this couple isn’t as volatile as some of the other couples; therefore creating a more laid back and slow burning romance. Delightful banter and steamy sex scenes further solidifies this couple’s compatibility as they accept their attraction and act on it without a lot conflict, fuss, or drama.

“No. Do you want me to? I’ve known a few she-dragons who liked that sort of-”

Bring the Heat is the book that fans have been waiting for and everything you could wish for in a fantasy romance adventure. If you enjoy outrageous characters, comical narrative and hilarious unpredictable scenarios, then look no further than G.A. Aiken’s Dragon Kin.

BRING THE HEAT is one of my most anticipated books of the year. First of all, if you haven’t read G.A. Aiken before and you’re a fan of Paranormal/Fantasy Romance, then you definitely need to pick this series up. This series is all about a crazy ass dragon family. If you’re new to Aiken, then let me warn you that her books tend to be over the top, violent, and ruthless, just like her characters and this is really why I really love her. There is literally no one else who can do crazy and funny quite like Aiken can.
This book doesn’t waste any time when it comes to the big war that this series has been building up to. The Zealots have made their move and now its up to Brannie, Aiden, and the rest of the crew to stop them. I would suggest reading the books in order because every single one of the previous couples appears in this book. You’ll get some updates of them, as well as see how they all work as a team in this war. Aiken goes through multiple points of views so you get to be in everyone’s head at least once.
The romance between Brannie and Aiden doesn’t get started right away but it does heat up quickly. As you can expect, there’s a lot of great banter between them. Aiken writes some pretty independent and strong heroines who are often quite ruthless so if you’re expecting sweet, tender moments, you’ll probably not get that with this series. Brannie is definitely one of my favorite heroines of this series because of her ruthless, care-free attitude that often gets her into trouble. She was an absolute thrill to read.
Surprisingly, we get a lot of Keita in this book. She’s had a book before but she plays a bigger part in this book. Keita and Brannie are cousins and seeing them fight throughout this book made me laugh so much. It was like watching to hot-headed bulls go against each other. So in addition to the romance, the war and its politics, I had this to look forward to as well.
BRING THE HEAT definitely lived up to my expectations. I just can’t seem to get enough of this series!

I finally found some time, and looking to get back in the reading game, I picked up this book, which continues right where I - and the previous book - left off, albeit about 7 years later. And what a letdown!
Aidan and Branwen, who'd been delightful in their guest appearances in the other books, were such wet blankets in their "titular" book. I mean, how is Keita more intelligent and more interesting than you in your own book? Arghhhhh!!
The main characters were nothing to write home about, the side characters were not much better to be honest. I LOVE Annwyl and her twins, but the little we saw of them was not particularly interesting. None of the other characters are worth mentioning.
Known for her slapstick humor, the gags in this installment fell flat.
The one thing that the book had going for it was that it resolved (hopefully, finally) the whole arc with Chramnesind the one-eyed god and his zealot followers. And not a moment too soon. That whole plot was beginning to get tired.
More and more with each book, my feeling intensifies that Ms. Aiken and her publishers are milking this series for all its worth instead of bringing this to a tight and satisfying finish. Why are we dawdling with uninteresting side characters and side plots when the main characters are there? Come on, Ms Aiken! This series has been fabulous: started off shaky, and then soared to rollicking good heights. Don't go out on a low note!

I need a special star rating for Dragonkin books, because I love them. Compared to other books I have read lately, a total 5. As part of the series it gets a 3.
Why?
Well, it just isn't quite as fun or gripping as other books in the series. Which is to say, it is still more fun and gripping than 99.9% of books out there. The problem is that Branwen and Aiden just fell a little flat for me. I think partly because I have loved the last few books so much. I adore Rhona and Vigholf. The Daughters of the Steppes are fab. There just wasn't all that much chemistry. Which is a shame, because in the previous books Branwen and Aiden had lots. Also, I hate to say this, but it was a bit samey. Yet another secret mission, Annwyl disappeared (which was actually very entertaining), Dagmar back at the castle doing what?
I wonder if she will write anymore? This story arc has ended with this book. She stopped writing the Pride series, and moved to Call of the Crows, and is writing a new series about honey badgers. I could understand why. 9 books is a lot. All the main, original characters we met have been pretty well covered. The next set would have to be about the next generation. The Twins and Rhi must be in their mid to late 30's now? 18 when they left home, 10 years training, 2 years approx. with Brigda, and this book 7 winters later. That could be interesting if she retired the 'older' characters and went in a new direction. But who knows what she'll do. And I'll probably never get my Meinhard book.

I have really enjoyed the last two books, and I am hoping this one will not be the let down that Eibhear and Izzy were. Don't get me wrong it was a good book, but I guess I had expectations. And I have expectations for this book, so I am crossing my fingers.
Still waiting for the quiet and shy Meinhard to fall in love - maybe Agrappina? Even a short story for Meinhard. One of the House of Penderyn girls - Addolgar's daughter? That would be funny. How would he cope with the a family full of the strongest female dragons in the southlands?

Bring the Heat is a fabulously fun adventure.
The true genius that is G.A. Aiken’s imagination boggles my mind. She manages to provide a non-stop, action packed adventure that is raw and gritty but infuses it with a huge shot of humor. All the while making the completely fictional and off the wall characters relatable, lovable and humanized!

"Who is this big-shouldered woman," one of the tribal leaders demanded, "that she believes she can speak among men?"
Brannie, with her head still pounding, her cousin smirking, and some human male attempting to look down on her despite the fact she towered over him, snarled, "I am Branwen the Awful. Captain of the First and Fifteenth Companies of the Dragon Queen's Armies. Daughter of Ghleanna the Decimator and Bram the Merciful. And best friends forever with Iseabail the Dangerous. That's who I am. And who the battle-fuck are you?"

Aidan stared at her for so long, she thought maybe she'd crossed a line. Not about suggesting that they might not get back to the Southlands alive, but by suggesting they'd still be involved somehow. Enough, anyway, to insist on a gift.
Uncomfortable, she asked, "Why are you staring?"
He never answered, but he kissed her. A sweet kiss that confused her even more.
"What is happening?" she asked when he pulled back.
"I like you, Branwen."
She smiled and replied, "Awwwww, Aidan…I like me, too."
Rolling his eyes, Aidan pushed her back on the bed and settled between her thighs.
"Why do I bother?" he asked her.
And, laughing, Brannie admitted, "I have no idea!"
So, the Dragon Kin series is, by far, one of my favorites. And this book was a great addition to the series. I've been looking forward to Brannie's story for awhile, and it didn't disappoint. The only bad thing I'd have to say about it was that it could have used more Branwen and Aidan together. More time "seeing" there relationship progress, but it was pretty par for the course, as I could tell. It's no secret these books, at lease the last few that I really remember, have a formula. The couple in question go on a journey together, usually with a few others, and hook up and catch feelings along the way. That's not a criticism, mind you. It works. And it's always a fun ride. But there is so much else going on that it seems like the relationship is building "off screen." I liked Aidan the Divine, he was a good match for Branwen the Awful, but really we just didn't see enough of them together. And I know that sounds weird, since the whole book is based on them traveling together, but they're only alone a handful of times. I just would have liked to see a little more of the change in their relationship, in more detail, as it happened, I guess.
Speaking of everything else going on…an awful lot happens in this book. Everyone makes an appearance. And that's one of my favorite parts of this series, I love seeing everyone from the previous books. Annwyl's little side journey was delightfully bloody. Lots of Keita in this book, which actually cracked me up. The twins and Rhi make a few appearances, along with Izzy and Éibhear, though honestly I thought we would have seen more of them. Fearghus and Briec were around long enough to throw Gwenvael into a pit, and Dagmar and her kids were around long enough to argue. The Riders pop up here and there which is always entertaining. Caswyn and Uther make for great traveling partners, I certainly enjoyed them.
These last few books have seemed to have taken a darker, more intense turn. They're still funny, but with a side of kind of creepy and some of what is going on is a little disturbing. The Zealots are still fighting for their one-eyed god, and and the Southland Queens are still trying to stop them. I liked the set up that sent Brannie and Aidan on their journey together, I liked that it took them to a new place we haven't seen before. This book seems to wrap up a pretty big story arc that's been ongoing, but I really hope it's not the end. The "final" battle was slightly underwhelming, but it did take an interesting turn and it was pretty funny. There are definitely some open-ended questions left at the end of the book, and some new characters from the Eastlands that I would definitely be interested in hearing more about. I can really only say that I hope this isn't the last we hear from these dragons…because I want SO much more!
Spoilers below, but not too bad…and honestly, probably too many words. I wonder if there's a limit for that sort of thing?…oh, well…enjoy…
"Why doesn't someone explain to me what's going on. And why are you here, Branwen, and not with your troops?"
Brannie's eyes narrowed dangerously and she opened her mouth, but Aidan suddenly stepped between them.
"No, no," he said to Branwen. "We don't have time for you to start yelling again. And, to be truthful, I just can't listen to that anymore."
"But she-"
"Caswyn killed your horse," he suddenly announced to Branwen, causing his dragon friend to turn to him in horror.
"You treacherous bastard!" Caswyn cried.
Rhona leaned to the side to look at her cousin. "Awwwww. Not Puddles."
"He was injured in battle and I was going to put him down with honor!" Brannie yelled, still upset. "And that dozy bastard ate him!"
"He was dying anyway!"
"I still don't care!" Brannie snarled at Caswyn before she turned to Keita and barked, "And what are you laughing about?"
Standing a few feet away and giggling, Keita replied, "The Mì-runach killed your horse. That's the funniest thing I've heard all century."
Branwen gazed at her cousin for long seconds before announcing, "You have wide hips like your mother."
With a roar, eyes wild with rage, Keita shifted to a roaring She-Dragon, uncaring that everyone else had to dash out of her way or be crushed in their human forms.

Growling, Aidan picked it up again and put it around her shoulders. There was a struggle between them. Aidan trying to keep the robe on her. Brannie trying to take it off.
Brannie yanked the robe from Aidan's grip. "What is wrong with you?" she asked, still laughing.
"Nothing," he lied, stepping away from her. "Nothing. I…just don't want you to get sick. It's cold out here…and you're" - he swallowed - "wet."
"I'm a dragon."
"Yes, I know," Aidan snapped. "I saw your tail." He glanced off. "It's perfect, by the way."
"Really? I've heard it's stubby."
"It's not stubby."
"Huh."
Aidan heard that tone and immediately got defensive on her behalf. "Tell me you're not listening to those two idiots."
"Caswyn and Uther? Hardly."
"That's good because their 'stubby' opinion may be my fault."
"Oh?"
"It was when we met with you and Izzy that first time and Uther and Caswyn were practically drowning in their own drool while they watched you bathe, so I may have said something about your tail-"
"Being stubby?"
"I never said stubby. I said 'a little short,' assuming they would lose interest since they are definitely dragons who do like a good tail."
"They're that easily manipulated by you?"
"Yes. Yes, they are."
"I see. But you didn't mean it?"
"Absolutely not. I just didn't want Éibhear tearing off their wings for lusting after his favorite cousin."
"But you like my tail."
"Of course I do…" Aidan cleared his throat. "In a…non-lusty, just as friends way."
"I see. Well that's good, I'm glad you cleared that up for me."
"Me too."

She dropped her hands on her hips, sucked air between her teeth before asking, "Do you or do you not want to keep this friends-fucking thing going?"
In answer, Aidan pushed himself off the bed and moved in front of her. He grabbed the bottom of her chain mail shirt and lifted it.
"Arms," he ordered. She raised them and he pulled the shirt completely off.
"What are you doing?"
"Keeping the friends-fucking thing going." He untied the material that bound her breasts. "Is that alright with you?"
"You still need to agree."
"Yes. I agree. No fucking as dragons. I totally understand it," he added as he unwound the cloth from her body and tossed it on the shirt. "Like prostitutes who won't kiss their clients."
"Are you calling me a whore?"
Smoothing his hands down her waist, he stopped. "No. Do you want me to? I've known a few She-Dragons who liked that sort of-"
"No. I don't want you to."
"Oh. All right. But what about dirty…and naughty?"
"Yeah, that's all right."
Grinning, he leaned in and kissed her neck.

The door abruptly opened and Zoya Kolesova walked in, shocking them both. But when she saw Aidan on his knees, her smile dropped.
"Oh. You have Aidan."
He pulled back a bit, clearing his throat. "Um…do you need something, Zoya?"
"Well…" She glanced at Brannie, then Aidan, then back to Brannie. "You will not be long with him, yes? I can be next?"
Brannie's entire body got stiff and her hand took firm hold of the hair at the back of his head. She clearly had no intention of letting him go - which he truly appreciated!
Between clenched teeth, Brannie snarled. "Get. Out."
Zoya pointed an accusing finger. "You Southlanders do not know how to share with others!"
"Kachka!" Brannie bellowed.
"Zoya Kolesova!" Kachka yelled from her room across the hall. "Whatever you are doing - stop it!"
"Selfish She-Dragon," Zoya snapped before storming out and slamming the door behind her.
Stunned, Aidan looked up at Brannie and asked, "Does she really think I have no say in any of this?"
"Penis-havers have no say. Those are her words, by the way, and she's said them…often."
"Well, don't let the fact that I'm on my knees confuse you, Captain," Aidan teased. "I'm in complete control."

"She's not unprotected," a new voice blurted out. "She's got her cousin Brannie with her."
Aidan looked at Caswyn and his friend immediately realized his mistake.
"I'm not supposed to talk, right?" Caswyn asked.
"Right."
The Empress pushed herself out of her chair. "Cousin Brannie? Cousin? Do you mean Branwen the Awful of the Cadwaladr Clan? Daughter of Ghleanna the Decimator also of the Cadwaladr Clan? That Cousin Brannie?"
Aidan cleared his throat. "My lady-"
"You have let loose a Cadwaladr in my territory?"
"I…I wouldn't worry. Brannie's quite…uh…nice?"
"Oh, well, if she's anything like her mother, I'm sure she's a fucking delight!"

"I've seen you put away three bottles of Rider ale that left you almost comatose. But half a bottle of Northlander ale that we shared? You might as well be drinking water."
"Your point?"
"You weren't drunk. We both knew what we were doing last night. We both remember every second of it. And since we're putting it out there-"
"Don't you dare say it."
"-I'm in love with you. There. Said it. Now what? Now what are you going to do, Captain?"
The fireball hit Aidan right in the face and a lesser Dragon would have been knocked back for miles, but his bastard brothers used to throw fireballs at him as entertainment from the time he could crawl.
But when the flames subsided, Brannie had flown off, leaving Aidan alone by the bay.
Head bowed, he took a moment to calm down. He wasn't about to chase after her. Capture her. Chain her up. Demand she listen.
No, no. That's how other dragons did things. Aidan was not like other dragons. He'd always known that long before Rhiannon the White had said as much to him upon their first meeting.
But he'd be damned if he let Branwen the Awful just storm out of his life!
If that crazy She-Dragon though it was over, she was very, very wrong.

"He loves you," Rhi said. "And what's wrong with that?"
"Everything! And shut up."
Rhi gasped. "But I'm the nice one."
"She's right," Talwyn said from her spot stretched out on the bed. "I'd be fine with you being unhappy."
Talan sat on the floor, his back against the bed's footboard and a book in his lap. "And I could go either way."
"I hate all of you."
"No, you dont." Izzy pulled Brannie out of the chair and looked her over. "Beautiful. Now go tell poor Aidan you love him, too."
"I will not. He tricked me."
"Aidan doesn't trick anybody. He may have smooth-talked you into dragon sex but that would be about it."
"I thought you were on my side!"
"Of course I'm on your side, idiot. And I want you to be happy. Aidan makes you happy."
"I can be happy without him."
"But why would you want to be?"

And that's one of my favorite parts of this series, I love seeing everyone from the previous books. Annwyl's little side journey was delightfully bloody. Lots of Keita in this book, which actually cracked me up. The twins and Rhi make a few appearances, along with Izzy and Éibhear, though honestly I thought we would have seen more of them. Fearghus and Briec were around long enough to throw Gwenvael into a pit, and Dagmar and her kids were around long enough to argue. The Riders pop up here and there which is always entertaining. Caswyn and Uther make for great traveling partners, I certainly enjoyed them.
These last few books have seemed to have taken a darker, more intense turn. They're still funny, but with a side of kind of creepy and some of what is going on is a little disturbing. The Zealots are still fighting for their one-eyed god, and and the Southland Queens are still trying to stop them. I liked the set up that sent Brannie and Aidan on their journey together, I liked that it took them to a new place we haven't seen before. This book seems to wrap up a pretty big story arc that's been ongoing, but I really hope it's not the end. The "final" battle was slightly underwhelming, but it did take an interesting turn and it was pretty funny. There are definitely some open-ended questions left at the end of the book, and some new characters from the Eastlands that I would definitely be interested in hearing more about. I can really only say that I hope this isn't the last we hear from these dragons…because I want SO much more!
Spoilers below, but not too bad…and honestly, probably too many words. I wonder if there's a limit for that sort of thing?…oh, well…enjoy…
"Why doesn't someone explain to me what's going on. And why are you here, Branwen, and not with your troops?"
Brannie's eyes narrowed dangerously and she opened her mouth, but Aidan suddenly stepped between them.
"No, no," he said to Branwen. "We don't have time for you to start yelling again. And, to be truthful, I just can't listen to that anymore."
"But she-"
"Caswyn killed your horse," he suddenly announced to Branwen, causing his dragon friend to turn to him in horror.
"You treacherous bastard!" Caswyn cried.
Rhona leaned to the side to look at her cousin. "Awwwww. Not Puddles."
"He was injured in battle and I was going to put him down with honor!" Brannie yelled, still upset. "And that dozy bastard ate him!"
"He was dying anyway!"
"I still don't care!" Brannie snarled at Caswyn before she turned to Keita and barked, "And what are you laughing about?"
Standing a few feet away and giggling, Keita replied, "The Mì-runach killed your horse. That's the funniest thing I've heard all century."
Branwen gazed at her cousin for long seconds before announcing, "You have wide hips like your mother."
With a roar, eyes wild with rage, Keita shifted to a roaring She-Dragon, uncaring that everyone else had to dash out of her way or be crushed in their human forms.

Growling, Aidan picked it up again and put it around her shoulders. There was a struggle between them. Aidan trying to keep the robe on her. Brannie trying to take it off.
Brannie yanked the robe from Aidan's grip. "What is wrong with you?" she asked, still laughing.
"Nothing," he lied, stepping away from her. "Nothing. I…just don't want you to get sick. It's cold out here…and you're" - he swallowed - "wet."
"I'm a dragon."
"Yes, I know," Aidan snapped. "I saw your tail." He glanced off. "It's perfect, by the way."
"Really? I've heard it's stubby."
"It's not stubby."
"Huh."
Aidan heard that tone and immediately got defensive on her behalf. "Tell me you're not listening to those two idiots."
"Caswyn and Uther? Hardly."
"That's good because their 'stubby' opinion may be my fault."
"Oh?"
"It was when we met with you and Izzy that first time and Uther and Caswyn were practically drowning in their own drool while they watched you bathe, so I may have said something about your tail-"
"Being stubby?"
"I never said stubby. I said 'a little short,' assuming they would lose interest since they are definitely dragons who do like a good tail."
"They're that easily manipulated by you?"
"Yes. Yes, they are."
"I see. But you didn't mean it?"
"Absolutely not. I just didn't want Éibhear tearing off their wings for lusting after his favorite cousin."
"But you like my tail."
"Of course I do…" Aidan cleared his throat. "In a…non-lusty, just as friends way."
"I see. Well that's good, I'm glad you cleared that up for me."
"Me too."

She dropped her hands on her hips, sucked air between her teeth before asking, "Do you or do you not want to keep this friends-fucking thing going?"
In answer, Aidan pushed himself off the bed and moved in front of her. He grabbed the bottom of her chain mail shirt and lifted it.
"Arms," he ordered. She raised them and he pulled the shirt completely off.
"What are you doing?"
"Keeping the friends-fucking thing going." He untied the material that bound her breasts. "Is that alright with you?"
"You still need to agree."
"Yes. I agree. No fucking as dragons. I totally understand it," he added as he unwound the cloth from her body and tossed it on the shirt. "Like prostitutes who won't kiss their clients."
"Are you calling me a whore?"
Smoothing his hands down her waist, he stopped. "No. Do you want me to? I've known a few She-Dragons who liked that sort of-"
"No. I don't want you to."
"Oh. All right. But what about dirty…and naughty?"
"Yeah, that's all right."
Grinning, he leaned in and kissed her neck.

The door abruptly opened and Zoya Kolesova walked in, shocking them both. But when she saw Aidan on his knees, her smile dropped.
"Oh. You have Aidan."
He pulled back a bit, clearing his throat. "Um…do you need something, Zoya?"
"Well…" She glanced at Brannie, then Aidan, then back to Brannie. "You will not be long with him, yes? I can be next?"
Brannie's entire body got stiff and her hand took firm hold of the hair at the back of his head. She clearly had no intention of letting him go - which he truly appreciated!
Between clenched teeth, Brannie snarled. "Get. Out."
Zoya pointed an accusing finger. "You Southlanders do not know how to share with others!"
"Kachka!" Brannie bellowed.
"Zoya Kolesova!" Kachka yelled from her room across the hall. "Whatever you are doing - stop it!"
"Selfish She-Dragon," Zoya snapped before storming out and slamming the door behind her.
Stunned, Aidan looked up at Brannie and asked, "Does she really think I have no say in any of this?"
"Penis-havers have no say. Those are her words, by the way, and she's said them…often."
"Well, don't let the fact that I'm on my knees confuse you, Captain," Aidan teased. "I'm in complete control."

"She's not unprotected," a new voice blurted out. "She's got her cousin Brannie with her."
Aidan looked at Caswyn and his friend immediately realized his mistake.
"I'm not supposed to talk, right?" Caswyn asked.
"Right."
The Empress pushed herself out of her chair. "Cousin Brannie? Cousin? Do you mean Branwen the Awful of the Cadwaladr Clan? Daughter of Ghleanna the Decimator also of the Cadwaladr Clan? That Cousin Brannie?"
Aidan cleared his throat. "My lady-"
"You have let loose a Cadwaladr in my territory?"
"I…I wouldn't worry. Brannie's quite…uh…nice?"
"Oh, well, if she's anything like her mother, I'm sure she's a fucking delight!"

"I've seen you put away three bottles of Rider ale that left you almost comatose. But half a bottle of Northlander ale that we shared? You might as well be drinking water."
"Your point?"
"You weren't drunk. We both knew what we were doing last night. We both remember every second of it. And since we're putting it out there-"
"Don't you dare say it."
"-I'm in love with you. There. Said it. Now what? Now what are you going to do, Captain?"
The fireball hit Aidan right in the face and a lesser Dragon would have been knocked back for miles, but his bastard brothers used to throw fireballs at him as entertainment from the time he could crawl.
But when the flames subsided, Brannie had flown off, leaving Aidan alone by the bay.
Head bowed, he took a moment to calm down. He wasn't about to chase after her. Capture her. Chain her up. Demand she listen.
No, no. That's how other dragons did things. Aidan was not like other dragons. He'd always known that long before Rhiannon the White had said as much to him upon their first meeting.
But he'd be damned if he let Branwen the Awful just storm out of his life!
If that crazy She-Dragon though it was over, she was very, very wrong.

"He loves you," Rhi said. "And what's wrong with that?"
"Everything! And shut up."
Rhi gasped. "But I'm the nice one."
"She's right," Talwyn said from her spot stretched out on the bed. "I'd be fine with you being unhappy."
Talan sat on the floor, his back against the bed's footboard and a book in his lap. "And I could go either way."
"I hate all of you."
"No, you dont." Izzy pulled Brannie out of the chair and looked her over. "Beautiful. Now go tell poor Aidan you love him, too."
"I will not. He tricked me."
"Aidan doesn't trick anybody. He may have smooth-talked you into dragon sex but that would be about it."
"I thought you were on my side!"
"Of course I'm on your side, idiot. And I want you to be happy. Aidan makes you happy."
"I can be happy without him."
"But why would you want to be?"
Surprised that the question came from Talan, they all looked at him.
"I mean, wouldn't you want to be with someone who makes you happy?" he went on. "Why would anyone want to be with someone who doesn't make them happy?" He blinked at Brannie. "Do you want to be with someone who doesn't-"
"Oh, shut up!" Brannie stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind her.
"Gods," Talwyn said with a shake of her head. "Is it me or does love sound miserable?"
"It's you," Izzy replied.

I really wasn't invested for the first 1/4-1/3 as many stories were going at once and I wasn't sure where the story was going. The plot is the main part of this, not the romance. These books might have started as romantic fantasy but they are pretty much fantasy with a romance attached at the main storyline. There are always many storylines going at once now. Since I'm reading a Netgalley copy on my Kindle, I have to get sit down time. The beginning just didn't pull me back to sit down to read. The ending is great, all wrapped up, though she did leave an opening for a future series.
There is the crazy dragon fun and we get to see all the dragons from the books before. This is not a book for someone that has not kept up with the series. This kind of wraps up all the couples of before and their children along with the war with the zealots, yea! Still I wanted a little more of the main couple and getting into the plot lines took a little bit of time. So a solid 4 stars. Thanks to Netgalley for the copy.

I always look forward to a GA Aiken/Shelly release every year because these books are like tangy chocolate, yummy but different and her Dragon series is as usual amazing! Crazy, strong women who totally dominate and out-shine all the poor men who fall for them!
This is one series where it takes me five minutes to reflect back on who is who, since the cast of characters is so long and now most of the kids are also grown; there are just way too many threads to keep a track of.
I will say I liked how the hero is so calm and level-headed, totally balancing out the heroine who is crazy. I won't tell you much about the plot because it will be spoilery but will say the book is the usual crazy, over-the-top and enjoyable Dragon Kin installment.

Why you should read it: G.A. Aiken (aka Shelly Laurenston) is by far one of my favorite authors. I find myself constantly laughing or giggling maniacally over one of her characters’ inner monologues … or more likely outer ones! The Dragon Kin books are especially amazing to me, because all of her heroines are strong, butt-kicking women who can handle whiny dragons with one hand tied behind their back. The audio versions are amazingly narrated and can be a danger if you are driving (laughing and spit-takes do not make for safe driving).

G.A.: I have to admit, I love coming up with the names for my Dragon Kin characters. I especially love legitimately giving heroines in a romance series names like Branwen the Awful, Ghleanna the Decimator, or Morfyd the Black Dragon of Despair, Killer of the Innocent, Annihilator of Souls. That last one is totally unfair to Morfyd, though … as everyone knows she’s a white She-dragon. Heh.
As for Aidan the Divine, he’s what the Mì-runachs are not used to. A smart, rational Berserker who considers it his job to keep his brethren alive. Not on the battlefield, they can manage that on their own. But out in the world, where the Mì-runachs’ collective mouths get them into trouble, that’s where Aidan really steps in and rules. At the very least, he keeps them from getting gutted by the women of the Cadwaladr Clan. Not an easy job for any male.
Jessie: Which was your favorite scene to write?
G.A.: There’s a scene with Brannie, Aidan, the Mì-runach, and Keita the Viper in a castle and Keita is attempting to get information out of a hostage. It’s the scene right after that when Brannie and the Mì-runach start to truly understand how dangerous Keita the Viper actually is. I really enjoyed that. I also love any scene where my Daughters of the Steppes are involved. Or anything with Annwyl. After all these years, I still love writing about Annwyl the Bloody.
Jessie: Branwen and Aiden have a slower-burning romance story line. How did you ensure readers would stay enthralled with their romance?

When I hear G.A. Aiken is publishing a new book my entire body perks up because I know I’m fixing to get a double dose of snarky dragons and for me, you just can’t have enough dragons. What I have had enough of is the continuing story arc of the war against the god Chramnesind and his thousands upon thousands of zealots. Truly, I was over them about two books ago.
The romance in this book centers around Brannie and Aiden. Brannie is the daughter of Ghleanna and Bram and she’s also Izzy’s best friend. Aiden is a royal dragon who also is a member the Mi-runach, the queen’s bat shit crazy but very loyal personal warriors. I’ve always loved Brannie, she’s insane on the battlefield and hilarious off it. Aiden is a newer character only around the last few books. We learned about his horrid family and history in book 8, Feel The Burn. He’s the voice of reason for his Mi-runach squad, keeping the crazy warriors from losing their heads. My problem is like the last few books, the romance took a backseat to the war storyline and for me at least, the book suffered for it.
With the war not going well at all, Brannie, Aiden, and his two squad members, Caswyn and Uther are sent on an impossible do or die mission with Keita. Brannie and Keita don’t get along mainly because Keita may be deadly but she’s also somewhat of a twit. Along the way they get stuck with some riders (who are my least favorite of all the characters in this series).
While they are on their mission, we also keep going back and forth to the POV’s of other characters. Annwyl has yet again found herself in another OTT crazy impossible situation and literally has to fight her way out of hell. Dagmar along with some of her creepy kids also get a fair amount of page time. I loved and hated these interruptions into Brannie and Aiden’s story. I enjoy time spent with beloved characters from other books, but hate that the war and all the other happenings literally hijacked the romance.
As happy as I am that this book finally wrapped up the Cult of Chramnesind story line, it ended up not being my favorite book of the series. The desperate mission, the war going bad, even some of the snarky fights all felt rather deja-vu-ish to me and I had a hard time staying engaged. The romance being treated more as an afterthought didn’t help much at all. It never really clicked with me even though some of the steamy stuff was hot. The final battle felt a bit rushed but I can’t say that bothered me. Truly, I was so over the whole cult thing, instead of a feeling of victory it was more of a “Thank goodness that’s over with so we can move on” sort of moment.
I still love this series and I love all the characters. This may be the end of the war, but it’s not the last of the Dragon Kin Series. I’m just hoping that future books will be more relationship oriented like the first ones. I love all the action, but I need more actual romance to balance the story out.

***4.5 ‘Battle-f*ck Crazy’ Stars***
What. A. Ride.
I mean this book is over 400 pages and I felt every single one. I enjoyed the hell out of all of it, but I really want to tack the word “Epic” on here because that was a true journey. Thankfully Aiden and Brannie’s own journey to their HEA, which was thankfully was much must more sweet and simple in comparison, which helped to even things out. I know this is touted as paranormal romance, but with ALL that happens, it really is much more urban fantasy than anything else. But regardless of what ‘label’ this one should be under the bottom line is I laughed, I cringed, I rolled my eyes and I loved every Extra AF moment.
I loved Aiden and Brannie. Aiden, considering that he is a Mi-runach, was all kinds of charming, logical, loyal to a fault and something of a peacemaker when necessary. But he does have his limits and has no problem cutting a person down when necessary. Brannie the She-Dragon was very different than Brannie the Captain. One was very focused and intense, the other was something of a ditz and quite thick in the head at times. but both sides have a very strong moral compass which made her fun to be around. Their romance, and I use that term lightly, was a true slow build that speeds up a lot towards the end. With everything else going on I had no problem with that because it allowed them to truly get to know each other and I loved them together. They were fun, funny and I liked how they simply got on together and really were a perfect match.
Then there is the whole issue with the One-Eye’d God. When I said in the beginning that ‘Epic’ should be tacked on here, I meant it. So much happens and so many side storylines came up and needed to be resolved before the big blowout that while I enjoyed it all, it did cause things to drag a bit for me. The saving grace, which some may not care for, were the multiple POV’s throughout the book. Each of these characters are Extra AF in their own right. They have their unique quirks and they own every inch of them. I love being in their heads and experiencing the world through their eyes. Annwyl and Dagmar are still my all time favorites, but Keita jumped up the ranks in this one. I’m hoping that there will be more books in this series, and from the way things ended there just may be, because I want more time with these crazy characters and I really want more time with the Abominations. I love the twins, but it’s Var that definitely peaked my interest in this one. So, fingers and toes crossed that more is to come in the Dragon Kin series!

This is another book from my blogger shame pile... another one that got caught up in my moving transition between New Orleans and Tucson. But I'm kinda glad that I waited on it now because it really helped lighten my mood this week while I've been trying to read and not die of the plague (thanks to all those germ harbingers of doom that you pick up on an airplane).
It seems like its been a long time since I've read a Dragon Kin book. I had no problem remembering our heroine, Branwen the Awful, but I couldn't seem to place our hero, Aidan the Divine. That didn't really matter in the long run as Aidan is the typical egotistical dragon, he thinks he's the GOAT (greatest of all time) and its up to our heroine to bring him back down to earth. I like it when the pretty boy and/or intelligent dragons have been paired with the Cadwaladr females, who are big tough fighting machines. Branwen definitely takes after her mother, Ghleanna, and is a renowned warrior known in all the realms. I like the mix of ridiculous and relatable and felt like Branwen hit both of those marks. She and Aiden definitely kept me entertained.
There was less focus on the romance in this installment and more focus on the continuing story arc, i.e. the dragons battling the evil god Chramnesind and his Zealot followers. I do not recommend reading this series out of order as the storyline is advanced with each installment. As with previous stories, we aren't always following our main characters, but will have diversions to follow Annwyl the Bloody, Keita the Viper, Dagmar the Beast, and the abominations, Talan, Talwyn and Unvarr.
The story arc does seem to conclude with this installment, so I hope this is not the end of the series. I really enjoy all the banter and sass in these books, and I absolutely love all the over-the-top dragons.

I loved this chaotic ride with the dragons and the trouble that is always present. All I could do was hang on and enjoy the madcap mayhem. It isn’t a sweet romance, or even a hot one – but rather a fun one, because Brannie had her usual brassiness, which was well matched with Aiden’s patience. Sadly, they didn’t have a lot of time alone, it was usually filled with enemies and their crazy families; but that is what makes it a Dragon Kin novel. I admit that a part of me misses the more “one on one” romances of the first books, but once in this world, it’s hard to let go. Another fun addition to the series.

This was a great story and addition to the series. I loved both Aidan and Branwen and really enjoyed their story.
Branwen is part of the Cadwaladr Clan...she's the daughter of Ghleanna and Bram (from Dragon Kin #0.4, Dragon on Top), BFF to Izzy (#6, How to Drive a Dragon Crazy) and sister to Celyn (#7, Light My Fire). Despite all these associations, Branwen can stand on her own and is a dragon warrior with an impressive rank and many soldiers under her command. She excels at fighting and war and only sleeps with a guy to sate her needs and usually just once because she hates it when a guy gets "clingy".
Aidan is one of the Mi-runach, a special band of dragon warriors that answer only to the Queen. Aidan is the son of a dragon royal but except for his youngest sister, Aidan doesn't like his family much. Aidan is one of the few "sensible" members of the Mi-runach and spends a lot of his time talking his buddies out of the trouble they get into because of the impulsive things they do.
This story begins about 3 years after the previous book and Annwyl and her allies have been fighting Zealots that are trying to take over everything in the name of their god. Branwen and Aidan are both with their troops and happen to be in the same area when one of the Mi-runach does something that royally pisses off Branwen and Aidan tries to calm things down before bloodshed takes place. In the middle of the heated discussion, a spell is set off by the Zealots and Branwen, Aidan and 2 other Mi-runach are separated from the rest of the troops. They soon run into Keita and end up being ordered to accompany Keita on a mission, much to Branwen's dismay.
The mission entails going to find Ren, who is Keita's friend and partner in her duties as a "defender of the realm". He disappeared and since he's the youngest (and favorite) son of the Empress of the Eastlands, it's important that they find him alive and well or risk war with the Eastlands. Branwen has always seen Keita as useless and crazy and Keita does pull some crazy stunts on their trip but she also shows that she's got some impressive skills and Branwen eventually has to give Keita some credit as they accomplish their mission. Branwen and Aidan have always been friends and have fought together but it's not until this trip that their friendship turns into something more. Branwen tries to deny their connection but Aidan is persistent, showing patience but pushing until he succeeded in winning her so he and Branwen end the story starting a HEA together.
This was a greatly enjoyable story. I just loved Branwen and Aidan as friends and then as something more. They just worked really well together for me, even if it took Branwen a bit to recognize their deeper connection. Surprisingly, the overlying series storyline (dealing with the Zealots) is mostly wrapped up in this book but with just a tad bit of something at the end to indicate more in the works. I loved the characters and the story was really good with enough humor to have me laughing out loud while being interesting enough to keep me engaged from beginning to end. I'd recommend this story/series. :D
* note - I listened to the audio version of this story and the narrator did a pretty good job except for the mispronunciation of some names (she's STILL pronouncing Dagmar as Dogmar).

Four and a half stars.
This book brings to a climax the arc of the Zealots and the god Chramnesind as Queen Annwyl the Bloody and the dragons of Garbhan Isle together with Queen Rhiannon and all the characters we have met in the past eight books draw together for the final conflict. This is an epic book, don't even try to read it if you haven't read the previous books, all our old favourites are back to do battle. Annwyl gets dragged into a well and disappears. Dagmar Reinholdt and her cohorts are plotting, the Cadwaladrs are their usual blood-thirsty selves and we see the Mi-runach and the Daughters of the Steppes. G.A. Aiken brings all of these fantastic characters to life so vividly and weaves the strands of their stories together in the tradition of some of the great fantasy novelists of my childhood.
At the personal level, Captain Branwen the Awful and her best friend Aidan the Divine have been fighting side by side against the Zealots. After Chramnesind's priests level the mountains as far as the eye can see, Aidan, Brannie and two of Aidan's Mi-runach brothers Caswyn and Uther drag themselves from the rubble and flee the approaching Zealot army, only to run into Rhiannon's youngest daughter Keita the Viper. The foursome are ordered to protect Keita as she undertakes a dangerous mission.
To do all of the different threads true justice this book needed to be twice as long (I wouldn't have minded). There was just so much going on that the romance between Branwen and Aidan didn't really take off for me. There didn't seem to be any great love between them, just two best friends who kind of slipped into love by accident. I also thought that, and probably intentionally, this book wasn't as laugh out loud funny as some of the others. Sure, Keita, Uther and Caswyn provided some light relief, and the Daughters of the Steppes are always good value, but overall this was a more sombre book as befits the climax of a story arc about a vicious cult.
I really liked this but I didn't love it. Branwen and Aidan just weren't strong enough characters in my opinion, Keita really stole the show from them even though it wasn't her book. But it was a strong fitting end to the Zealots, although it looks like there might be more trouble on the horizon ...

Once - early in this series - I considered these books appointment reading - as in I would set aside a day and just wallow in the wonderfulness, not stopping until I was done. Now... meh, not so much. The last few books have been so samie - with interchangeable lead characters and ho-hum plots.
I felt like I had read this book before - even the dialogue exchanges felt all too familiar as if I have read them in previous instalments.
So whilst it was amusing in spots - all the jokes felt kind of old and repetitive.
The plot bounced around - from POV to POV - which meant I kept putting this book down and really wasn't that fussed about picking it up again, since the storyline plodded along in fits and starts - and felt so darn familiar it was far from gripping. All the so-called twists could be seen coming from a mile away and had kind of been done before in a similar manner in earlier books.
So now the romance - well, to be truthful I found it kind of sad. These two were just friends with benefits, and I actually found Brannie kind of hard to like (whereas I've liked her in earlier books). Her nature/responses weren't different from Izzy or some of the Steppes Riders - so she was just an aggravating, aggressive large woman - big deal, been there so many books before this. An Aiden, whom I liked wasn't give much to work with - except as tag along and mediator. So the romance was kind of a fizzle.
One big jarring note - was Branwen and the whole sea-sick /scared of boats things. She's a dragon, can fly away any old time.. so why go down this path? It felt forced and wrong.
It feels to me like there is little new, exciting or even dare I say it, that novel/or funny about this series any longer. (Though points for Keita - she was the only fun character on offer that consistently delivered) The author seems to regurgitating plots/characters/dialogue - in real danger of ditching this series... damn.

Dragons, Demons, Witches, Kin Folk to the maximum overload. This is not a stand alone read. Action got interesting about half way through after stumbling over all the different characters and the multiple story lines taking place. Was effort to complete because I have not read the others in this series. Writing was smooth and the action was fast paced.
