After escaping the League, Sulan and her friends are granted entrance into the Dome, a utopian biodome in the wilderness of Alaska. Sulan soon finds herself a pawn in Global Arms’s political maneuvers to secure the national mercenary contract. Forced to put on a public persona that makes her skin crawl, she must charm Vex media moguls to further the cause of Global. Should she fail to embrace her new role as company spokesperson, the consequences will be deadly to everyone she loves.
Meanwhile, the League unleashes a new deadly threat on the United States. When Sulan and her friends stumble on the trail of a League mole within the Dome, they set out to track him down. Will they be safe in their new home, or will they find themselves trapped among enemies?
If there was only one way I was able to describe this series it would be original. This is the third installment of the series (the second full novel) and the imagination the author has managed to embed into the world building completely amazes me.
Sulan and her friends are now living (read: trapped) in the Dome. A Global Arms village hidden in the depths of Alaska. Still reeling from the death of her mother, Sulan continues to view Global with suspicion. This makes things all the more difficult when Global essentially blackmails the group into doing a promotional campaign to bolster Global's bid for the US arm's contract.
The Dome was a faced paced, action packed read. If possible, this one involved even more gadgets and nifty tech inventions than the first novel. I thoroughly enjoyed the world building but the best part of this novel for me was the characters. Uncle Zed, my favourite from the first novel was a complete hoot. I thought the author did very well in creating the conflict in this novel between Sulan and her best friend Hank. I loved Sulan's spunk but Hank's reaction to being asked to be the face of Global rang totally true to me. Sulan was angry and wanted the truth but Hank just wanted a warm bed and a hot meal for her family. I get that. We'd all be like that in the circumstances and it made the story so much more believable.
This novel picks up where the first left off (the second being a short novella from Riska's perspective). Sulan, Taro, Hank and Billy have been taken to the Dome. Now they are trapped and in the mercy of Mr. Winn and his niece Claudine Winn, the founders of Global Arms. They are groomed and molded to become the new Heroes of America, aka advertising puppets for Global Arms. Hank takes to it immediately, not questioning the colour coded uniforms, the food quantity caps, the standard housing. All she sees is a way to provide for her family, so she'll do whatever Mr. Winn wants her to do. She naturally blooms in the public spotlight. This is not how Sulan, Taro, and Billy feel. They know something is up. While they realize one wrong move could get themselves and their families thrown out into the Alaskan snowy wilderness, they can't sit idly by and let themselves be used a puppets. So while on the outside they try to appear to be conforming, what they are actually doing in secret is building a vex machine with a follow classmate in order to reach out of the dome and figure out exactly what is going on. To make matters worse, Sulan's dad is meeting in secret with Taro's dad. Together they are trying to crack what is going on in something called the Project Renascentia. Sulan, Taro, and Billy stumble on some intel that could blow the mystery wide open....
Once again I found the beginning a little slow for my taste, but knowing the author would come through towards the end, I powered through. And sure enough, before we even hit the halfway point, things start heating up. Uncle Zed plays more of an active role in this one, mistaking Sulan for her mother, aka Morning Star! Sulan finally learns exactly who Gun is (totally called it).
The ending was FABULOUS!!!! I am now in the process of figuring out how to get the rest of the series to read!!!
In Conclusion
Loved it!!!! Totally looking into getting a hold of the next set of books!!!
Sulan fights to conquer her grief as she and her friends are manipulated by Global Arms into a round of propaganda media appearances to support Global's bid for the American arms contract. Can real life friendship stand up to those in VEX? There is more than job security at stake when you don't toe the line at Global Arms! Who will fall in line; who will continue to question and search for truth? Is the threat from the Anti-American League vanqushed just because they cut off the head or will the terror continue? Will Sulan find a way to contact Gun? Find out as the action continues in this third episode of the Sulan series!
The Dome is the third episode in the Sulan series. While you can read this as a standalone but it does end on a cliffhanger. And to fully understand the storyline you should read the books in the order written. There is violence. This is an interesting story and you aren't sure who is who and who can be trusted. Definitely a coming of age book.
In this third volume we find Sulan who once escape the league is found in the dome with his friends. She will serve as spokesman. They will have to be careful because a new threat weighs on the United States and there is a mole in the league.
After the mini-story on Riska that was book 2, book 3 picks up Sulan’s tale as the protagonists arrive at the company’s enclave. There was relationship development, intrigue and more discovery of dark dealings. A very good sequel.
I liked the action and suspense, but the big reveal wasn't quite as much of a surprise to the reader as it was to the characters. Beyond that, it's a good volume in the series.
