AIR #2

Broken Paths

Rate this book
My job working for a clandestine government agency, AIR, allows me to use my powers without appearing crazy. With my partners, I protect the Lost, mythological creatures from other dimensions, and keep them hidden from the outside world. Throwing myself into work as much as possible keeps me focused, so I don’t have time to dwell on the uncertainty of the past. When a routine call starts with a gun pointed at me, I know it’s going to be a bad day, but at least it’s not my employer trying to kill me. Once the weapons are holstered, we discover a dead gnome. Was it natural causes or execution by an unknown assailant as the gnome's family claim? The case leads us to a string of deaths and a threat that could expose the Lost to the world. Forced to collaborate with teams outside of our agency means I need to keep my abilities in check. The deeper we delve into the investigation, the more my shattered soul becomes a liability, as I absorb the essence of victims and start to lose myself. At times, I’m not sure it’s still me inside my own skin. Why did I choose now to start dating? Based on the evidence, I go undercover to track a killer. It’s risky, especially with a drug addict at my side, but we will put an end to the monster responsible—even if it costs my life.

I didn't think this one was nearly as entertaining as the first one.

I still liked the characters but there were a few things that really stuck out. The first is that for the majority of this book there was no Vincent. Now I'm not sure how much I really liked Vincent. He was probably not as nice as Ethan but I thought there was chemistry between he and Cassie. Ethan on the other hand is just textbook nice. He's the perfect guy really and there's nothing about him to dislike. He's just kind of boring. I'm not feeling any sparks at all between them. So there are no moments at all like the ones in the first book. Until the second half that is, when Vincent shows up. And naturally they can't be together. Allrighty then, way to create some angst. But Vincent was an ass who didn't call or anything so really Ethan is the better - albeit more boring - choice. Mehh. It would be nice if there was some relationship drama between the two of them (did i really just say that?) to spice things up a bit. No matter how much I think Ethan is a nice guy, etc..etc.. my attention still waned until Vincent showed back up.

Also, I'm still liking the supporting cast, especially the grandma, but I'm having a problem with the fact that other than the grandma, the majority of the supporting cast is male. This is another female character with no female friends. I'm not as bothered by it as I would normally be however because Cassie's lack of female friends is not due to any type of magical hoo-ha syndrome. All the guys aren't in love with Cassie and there are no potential love interests in this group other than Vincent. Ethan is not part of the group so I'm okay, except maybe on principal. I think she needs a female friend. We all do.

As for the plot itself, I complained about the muddiness of the first book. This is even worse. Or maybe I just can't seem to visualize or understand the logic behind the path and the souls and the soul pieces, etc.. The first plot was interesting because there was always a new creature to be introduced. This plot was kind of ho-hum, but I did enjoy the camping scene.

Satisfying sequel

In the second installment of AIR, Cassie still struggles with the changes inside her after Vincent mistakenly shredded her soul. In her latest case, Lost inexplicably die with no apparent cause. The team is baffled until they discover an unexpected connection to a drug case. Someone is killing Lost and trapping portions of their souls in cheap jewelry, which becomes problematic for Cassie when those soul fragments determine that they'd rather reside in her.
This book is all about Cassie and weird things that happen to her and her abilities. There is very little development of any of the other characters. They are mostly just along for the ride on this one. Cassie also starts a new relationship with a local police lieutenant, since no one has received word of Vincent since he dragged a vampire between worlds. I like Ethan's character, but I don't see the relationship going anywhere long term. He is already way too freaked out about the dangers Cassie encounters on her job and she can't reveal any of the supernatural to him. It would be just too awkward to be in a relationship where you could never allow your significant other into the back yard because a fairy lived there. But I guess that I'll have to read book 3 to see what happens.

I'm torn....SPOILER WARNING.

I'm torn in what to say about the book. I like her idea, it's a fresh take on the genre. But, and here are the 2 things I'm wrestling with: a- it seemed a little slow at the beginning, and b-there was a part that did not make sense. SPOILER, Vincent comes back. His excuse did not sound believable as to why he did not get in touch. He was assigned to their field office. Why then would he go back to his former one, before checking in at his work? That did not work for my brain.
I do like her writing style. I like her grandmother, I enjoy Logan and his family. I also am intrigued with her bringing the exfiance into the story, and dangle him in front of her readers. Makes me hope to see him get the smack down in some way. And she has hooked me with her shattered soul. I want to know what is go is going to happen with that but of drama. I am not a fan of a love triangle, and hope she does not do that cliche.
In the end, I will be reading the next book. But the above reasons are why she got a lower ratio.g from me.

The perfect gift.

Another great read. But I just want to know what makes her able to do the things she does.
Vincent is still missing but the agency has another problem. The supernaturals are dying but there is no reason why, whilst humans are acting out of character. Is it really drugs? Why is her Gran telling her to visit the Palm Reader? As more and victims fall prey to this new blight, the team find themselves making a tenuous link. All people that have been acting out of character have been wearing jewellery. Throw in a drug bust, her suddenly being thrown into a whole pile of jewellery, an ambitious drug dealer, a rogue Walker and the return of Vincent. Plus she now has a new man - a detective that has been involved due to murder. Can they stop the deaths? Have they found everyone in the ring? A good plot but still need to understand why she can do stuff that the Walkers can't.

Soul Theft

I’d probably give this 4.5 ⭐️ if I could.

This series just keeps getting better. I really like the MFC, Cassie. I think she is strong and determined to help others. She is loyal to her friends and family and tries to always do her best. I also like that she relies on her team members to support her. She doesn’t try to do everything on her own, which is unusual in Urban Fantasy. Normally this is a lesson our MFCs have to learn along the way. Cassie starts out as this as a default, and I really like that.

In this book Cassie is getting more used to dealing with her amped up power, but it makes her vulnerable to perils in their latest case. A human is brought in for murder and he blames it on a necklace taking over and killing his girlfriend. The team are called in because of similarity to a strange case with Lost they are dealing with.

In this book there is more romance, but it’s kind of back ground to the case. It’s not front and centre so it doesn’t detract from the fast moving plot. I really enjoyed the mystery around this case and the way it affected Cassie.

This series is really good and I can’t understand why more people haven’t reviewed or rated it. I definitely recommend giving it a whirl, as it different from most other Urban Fantasy books I’ve read.

I really enjoyed the mystery in this book. There were so many things going on and each situation layered with another, giving it more depth. There were some shocker parts that I didn't see coming. The introduction to different kinds of mystical creatures was good, and I liked how they were blended into the story. You have to love Grams though. I loved her little hints and how she used her gifts to do the little things that could annoy somebody...like already knowing what they want for lunch. LOL. I am definitely moving on to the next book. I need to know what kind of mess they are going to get themselves into this time.

Broken Paths, book 2 of the AIR series, is a book I picked up during my Kindle Unlimited trial. The AIR series has such a fresh, unusual world and some wonderful protagonists. The whole concept of the shattered soul, and the consequences of the fragmentation and Cassie's gift of reading The Path are a nice change of pace in a trope-filled genre. If you're looking for something unique and well-written, this may be the series to try.

Good story

Although the author tends to get too involved in the characters wondering who’s thinking what. And the party scene was a little....unclear....and not descriptive enough for me to get a mental picture. There were walls at the party. Couldn’t tell you if it was someone’s house or a hotel or a persons home.

Good story. Going to continue with the series

Not sure if I will get the next one in this series. Nothing ever gets fixed. The situation just gets worse. Once again I state that you’ve got to give me something good, some solutions something to look forward to.

Enjoying this series. A good mix of paranormal, crime and a little romance.
The characters are developing nicely and the world building is getting better. I really like that there are no cliff hangers but subtle hint of more to come that has me wanting to read the next book.

Fortunes, luck, and turtles

Cassie really takes a beating throughout the story - both physically and mentally. There's a lot of action and some really shady characters. I was surprised by one character's appearance, as brief as it could be.

Another great criminal adventure! Cassie, her partner, Logan, and new friends Rider and Vincent set about to solve a string of Lost murders, all of which seem to be very unusual. No signs of distress. Cassie's newest friend happens to be working a case on which the AIR team is called in. Strange things are happening to humans, and it revolves around interesting jewelry. More new characters, and a surprise villain. Booloodian's imagination is amazing! On to book 3!

I really enjoyed reading this book. I read all the books in the series that are published so far, in less than a week. I couldn't put them down! The idea of there being portals to different worlds that contain the beings our myths are based on is such a great concept! Then top it off with a protection agency that monitors those beings and deals with the mysteries and incidents that occur as a result.

The only complaints I have would be that I would have liked the descriptions of her characters to be more descriptive and there are a few grammar errors.

**I was going to use the word "creatures" instead of "beings", but my mind kept going back to the heroin of the series continually correcting people who would address the beings from other worlds as creatures, things or anything that made them seem as though they were not intellectual beings, and I just couldn't bring myself to do it.**

Cassie finds the best trouble!

Shards of souls, a missing partner, new people, what could possibly go wrong. We get introduced to some fun people in the AIR world that add another layer of fun an intrigue. I love this world and can't wait to read more about Cassie and the gang.
