Take a grumpy investigator, add a sassy dragon, then watch the villains run...or not.
Jack and Marin return for three new cases: Something Nasty in the Attic, The Geolocating Book, and The Heartbeat in the House. Unexpected clients, deadly magical objects, and a disturbingly aware house lead the duo to the edge of catastrophe more than once in this collection.
This volume contains three episodes, each of which is a complete, stand-alone story.
And don't miss Jack & Marin's first novel, Entombed! amazon.com/Entombed-Spirelli-Investig...
Kate Baray writes page-turning urban fantasy with relatable characters.
When Kate's not tapping away at her keyboard or in deep contemplation of her next fanciful writing project, she's sweeping up hairy dust bunnies and watching British mysteries.
Kate is from Austin, Texas (where many of her stories take place) but has recently migrated north to Boise, Idaho, where soup season (her favorite time of year) lasts more than two weeks.
She's worked as an attorney, a dog trainer, and in various other positions, but writer is the hands-down winner. She's thankful readers keep reading, so she can keep writing!
Kate's series include Lost Library and Spirelli Paranormal Investigations. Under the pen name Cate Lawley, Kate (aka Cate!) writes Vegan Vamp Mysteries, Death Retired Mysteries, Fairmont Finds Canine Cozy Mysteries.
This was fun. Several short stories about the cases that come to Spirelli Paranormal Investigations.
Jack Spirelli and his partner - dragon Marin - get pulled into all sorts of magical mayhem and have to assist their clients while trying not to get killed or any other nasty side effects.
I have enjoyed other books by Kate Baray and recommend them to anyone who enjoys paranormal fiction.
What a delight! The six stories that make up this book are just so much fun! They are light-hearted, pretty innocent, and interesting. Baray pulls in a lot of magic and magical beings. I do believe I'll grab another in the series.
Spirelli Paranormal Investigations: Episodes 4-6 by Kate Baray
4. Something Nasty in the Attic 5. The Geolocating Book 6. The Heartbeat of the House
In these three too long for short stories/too short for novellas, Baray moves the story of Jack Spirelli's relationships and business forward. While I liked all three, #4, Something Nasty in the Attic, was by far my favorite, being the most poignant and emotionally satisfying. However, each of these three episodes let Jack's strong sense of right and wrong, and his loyalty to those around him and to his clients, shine through. It was fun getting to see more of the creature that inhabits his junk shop, the Arkan Sonney, and learn more about where it sits in the magical array of beings. It was interesting to learn more about Baray's version of dragon lore, and to see Marin developing her skills, as well as the odd connection made between Jack and Joshua (episode #4), which I'm hoping develops further as Baray continues the series. Each episode's situation was unique, interesting, and compelling.
As I've said in other reviews of her work, Baray has a way of drawing the reader into the story, as though you might be a passenger in his ancient Jeep or Marin's Range Rover. Descriptions are drawn vividly, characterizations distinct and convincing. The reader has no trouble believing in the existence of any and every magical idea that arises. This 3-episode compilation was well edited and proofed -- except for one enormous error in #4, almost at the beginning of the story, where the author calls the main character, Jack Spirelli, John. Now, I know that Jack is a common nickname for John -- I have a cousin named John that, to my knowledge, hasn't been called John ever, only Jack. But I don't remember any backstory on Jack Spirelli to indicate is given name is John, so it was pretty jolting to see that (on my Kindle at location 81). In fact, I went back and re-read it from the beginning to see if I'd skipped another character present at the time. I hadn't. I have only one other time in my over 6 decades of avid readership seen an author misname a character, and then it wasn't the main character, so, yes, that's why the book is rated 4, rather than 5, stars.
But again, I really really like these characters. I enjoy Baray's style of writing. I'm anxious to move on to "Entombed," which is called "A Spirelli Novel," or maybe the Spirelli story, "Bob vs. the Cat," or maybe both!
The mysterious animal who Jack feeds leaves Marin a message that there is something bad in the attic. When they go to help, they find a very strong magical prescience. How to help is the question and are they totally out of their league.
This is yet another unique and engaging story from the Spirelli Paranormal Investigation series. Like the others in this series, it is creative, full of well crafted characters and has magic as its focus. The bantering between the characters is witty and containing snippets of humour flushing out the characters, displaying their strengths and foibles. The sense of compassion and the way they creatively solve the problem adds a great deal to the depth of the story. The storyline flows smoothly and quickly and is full of surprises. I really enjoyed this story and look forward to more amazing adventures from this dynamic team.
Episode five.
A geolocation book that uses death magic was up for sale. Jack and Marin were tasked with buying it. The book was dangerous and obtaining it was a lot more complicated than they thought.
This is the fifth episode from the Spirelli Paranormal Investigation series. The characters are dynamic and the interactions between them was witty and engaging. The storyline is full of action, interesting paranormal characters and magical twists. It is yet another great paranormal action/adventure from a wonderful series.
Episode six.
A magical house set to be torn down, brings Jack and Marin to the rescue, only to find themselves outmatches. Marin’s dad comes to help and Jack encourages Marin to use this as an opportunity to resolve some dragon family issues.
Creative magical entities, danger, family drama is packed into the sixth episode in the Spirelli Paranormal Investigation series. The witty and humorous narrative and the action packed storyline keep you interested in the story until its conclusion. I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the characters and banter between them. I also enjoyed the mystery and the creative way it was solved. If you like short paranormal mysteries with twists you will enjoy this story.
This is a wonderful, fun lighthearted series with great characters.
I love the whole concept of a paranormal investigative business working out of a junk shop.
Jack and Marin are a brilliant team. They are both great main characters. These stories have very creative plots, covering lots of different paranormal activity. They have great characters who are a good mixture of personality types. I thought it was wonderful putting in 'Bob'. He's an interesting blend of paranormal and just plain strange and I love that!
The action scenes are very fast paced, bursting with tension and grit. When Marin struts her stuff, she is awesome. Her part in the fight scenes is always brilliant. I love her kick ass attitude! Jack is a unusual character. On the surface he seems astute, tough, and intuitive. Yet he also comes across as vulnerable. I love how he always manages to bounce back from each encounter he finds himself in.
Each story reveals just a tiny bit more about Jack and Marins personal lives. It's such a tease and I love it! This is not a soppy, sappy, overly sentimental series of stories, even tho it touches on personal family dynamics which seem painful to both of them.
The chemistry between Jack and Marin is great. It's really fun reading about their growing friendship and the trust that is becoming more solid with each case they solve. The other thing I love about these stories is that there is no romance in any of them. That's brilliant!
These stories made me see magic in a different way. Spirelli Paranormal Investigations is top of my favourite books list. I am hopelessly addicted to them. I don't know how many episodes of these stories tgat there are but I sure hooe this book is not the last one.
3.4 stars Goodreads; 3.9 Amazon, mainly because they all leave me wanting more
Entertaining characters, and the bones of good stories. I just wish I could get the answers to discussion-worthy questions, and more details and depth. Everything happens kind of fast, and the climactic scenes tend to feel (to me) like they end somewhat abruptly. There is some character development, at least, both with Jack & Marin, and Marin & her family. Bob is a great addition, amusing and intriguing. I'm also curious whether we'll see consequences re. "Joshua".
Spirelli and his Dragon sidekick just keep rolling in this second volume of the adventures of parelli paranormal investigations. Their paranormal mascot Bob leads them into another Amazing Adventure.
This second book is another great read. Don't pass it up!
Jack and Marin continue to investigate cases that come their way. The last one ended without all the loose ends being tied up. A lot of build up to catastrophe then the problems just resolved easily. A letdown.
Fun stories with a paranormal twist are hard to come by. But these stories have delivered so far. I like the character development and interaction too, so both thumbs up!
If you like Harry Dresden you will also like Jack Spirelli! I ran through the first 6 books of the series in absolutely no time at all. Quirky cases with amusing results; a “teen aged” dragon with family angst.
I enjoyed the first episodes so much I had to get the 4-6 episodes. I love the characters and the pace of each episode. Can’t wait to read the next book.
I really enjoyed reading the Spirelli Paranormal Investigations episodes 4 - 6. Kate Baray is on to a great series here. Fun style of writing both engaging, interesting and entertaining. I look forward to reading more of this series hopefully as a longer novel than the episodes. But I did like having each investigation as episode in a set of three. Definitely kept me interested and wanting more. I look forward to reading more of your books Kate Baray!
Series of short stories, each following the previous one. From soul stealing books to magic infused houses, the danger and mystery level is high. Past characters make spot visits too. Great quick reads.
This book lost some of the charm of the first book. I often got lost in the dialogue and was not sure who was talking to whom. Stories ended in a very hum drum fashion.
