इस अत्यंत लोकप्रिय पुस्तक-माला की शुरुआत 1960 के दशक में हुई जब पहली बार नागरी लिपि में उर्दू की चुनी हुई शायरी के संकलन प्रकाशित कर राजपाल एंड सन्स ने हिंदी पाठकों को उर्दू शायरी का लुत्फ़ उठाने का अवसर प्रदान किया। इस पुस्तक-माला का संपादन उर्दू के सुप्रसिद्ध संपादक प्रकाश पंडित ने किया था। हर पुस्तक में शायर के संपूर्ण लेखन में से बेहतरीन शायरी का चयन है और पाठकों की सुविधा के लिए कठिन शब्दों के अर्थ भी दिए हैं। प्रकाश पंडित ने हर शायर के जीवन और लेखन पर- जिनमें से कुछ समकालीन शायर उनके परिचित भी थे- रोचक और चुटीली भूमिकाएं लिखी हैं।
आज तक इस पुस्तक-माला के अनगिनत संस्करण छप चुके हैं। अब इसे एक नई साज-सज्जा में प्रस्तुत किया जा रहा है जिसमें उर्दू शायरी के जानकार सुरेश सलिल ने हर पुस्तक में अतिरिक्त सामग्री जोड़ी है।

After Sahir's mother left his father when he was 13, fear and financial deprivation surrounded the formative years of this young man.
Upon matriculation, he joined the Satish Chander Dhawan Government College For Boys, Ludhiana. He was quite popular for his ghazals and nazms in the college. In 1943, after being expelled from college, Sahir settled in Lahore. Here, he completed the writing of his first Urdu work, Talkhiyaan (Bitterness). After his work was published, he began editing four Urdu magazines, Adab-e-Lateef, Shahkaar, Prithlari, and Savera He then became a member of the Progressive Writers' Association. However, inflammatory writings (communist views and ideology) in Savera resulted in the issuing of a warrant for his arrest by the Government of Pakistan. So, in 1949, he fled from Lahore to Delhi. After a couple of months in Delhi, he moved to and settled in Bombay where he rose to fame by writing lyrics for Hindi films.
Ludhianvi was awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India in 1971.

ये जो किताब है "साहिर लुधियानवी" साहिर साहब के दिल के जज़्बातो को ग़ज़लो और नज़्मो के ज़रिये सामने रखती है। इस किताब में साहिर ने अपने दौर में तो अपने लफ़्ज़ों का जादू चलाया ही है पर आज के दौर में भी हम उनके खूबसूरत अल्फ़ाज़ों से नहीं बच सकते इस हक़ीक़त को बयां करने की गवाह है यह किताब
" प्यार पर बस तो नहीं है मेरा लेकिन फिर भी,
तू बता दे की तुझे प्यार करू या न करूँ ,
तूने खुद अपने तब्बसूम से जगाया है जिन्हें ,
उन तमन्नाओ का इज़हार करू या न करू|"
साहिर ने अपनी मोहब्बत के साथ साथ समाज के असली चेहरे को अपनी कलम के ज़रिये सामने लाया है।
"ये शाहराहों पे रंगीन साड़ियों की झलक,
ये झोपड़ों में गरीबों की बेकफन लाशें ।"
ये नज़्में मैंने इस किताब के "किसी को उदास देखकर" से ली है। मोहब्बत और समाज के आईन को साहिर ने बड़ी खूबसूरती से एक साथ लाया है।
मुझे साहिर का ये नज़मा बेहद खूबसूरत लगा-
" अश्कों में जो पाया है वो गीतों में दिया है,
इसपर भी सुना है की ज़माने को गिला है,
जो तार से निकली है वो धुन सबने सुनी है,
जो साज़ पे गुज़री है वो किस दिल को पता है
साहिर के दिल की मासूमियत ,मोहब्बत, खूबसूरती सब एक किताब में उतार दी उनकी कलम ने।
साहिर ने जब शायर की हैसियत से इस दुनिया में कदम रखा तब उसपर फैज़ और मजाज़ जैसे महान शायरों का खासा असर हुआ ।
लेकिन जब साहिर ने अपने निजी एहसासों को ग़ज़लो नज़्मों में पिरोया तो उनकी शेरोशायरी की दुनिया में अलग ही जगह बन गई । उनकी ज़िन्दगी की ज़िल्लतें , ग़म, खुशियाँ ,मुकाम और अधूरी चाहत हर चीज़ की तस्वीर है यह किताब ।
साहिर ने जितनी शिद्दत से अपनी मोहब्बत निभाई वही शिद्दत उनकी ग़ज़लो और नज़्मों में भी है अगर मोहब्बत का एहसास चाहिए तो उनके ग़ज़ल के चन्द नज़्में काफी है............
मुझे तुम्हारी जुदाई का कोई रंज नहीं,

This is one such book which we can have as a collection in our library as a part of poetry. Sahir's work has been appreciated by people across the generation and he has presented us the couplets which can be used to express various emotions. I personally liked this book a lot.

This book is collection of poetry of highly appreciated and most famous writers work presented to readers in hindi (devnagari ) and urdu languages to enjoy the work. The collection is the one of the best of writers work. Alongside poetry , difficult word meaning are also given in the book under every poetry .
Till today the poetry of this book must have been written innumerable times in books , but this is special because a compilation of poetry and curating it also take a hard work that suresh salil did with this book

Good collection of Sahir's works. His poetry is filled with two themes - a voice against the powerful oppressors and the anguish of love unreturned.
There is also a preface that gives his brief bio. How Sahir moved from Ludhiana to Lahore and came back to Delhi post partition and finally settled in Mumbai. How warm a person he was and how great a host.

Though these pieces bear the mark of aggressive masculinity, the poems about unrequited love are filled with raw pain, anguish, and resentment. Other poems expose the hard lives of workers, and the shifting tides of social movements and condemn the harsh acts of the state against its people. Through these lines, the poet reveals his defiance against an exploitative regime, eschewing the then-prevalent romantic motifs to depict the daily struggles of the working class honestly.

This book contains shayaris by one of India's beloved poets. They are both heart-touching and heart-wrenching. The meanings of tough Urdu words are given in the footnotes which makes the shayaris understandable.

प्रकाश पंडित द्वारा सम्पादित इस पुस्तक में अच्छी नज़्में, ग़ज़लें, फ़िल्मी गीत और उनके बारे में भी है। बहुत अच्छी किताब है।

Slightly more complex on the urdu so slightly difficult for fans who are still not fully versed with verbatim of the language. Might have been much more fulfilling with some translations adjacent

साहिर लुधियानवी जी की गज़लों और नज्मों के उपर कुछ भी कहना बेमानी होगा। प्रेम का एक अदभुत रुप लिए इनकी नज्में दिल को छूती हैं। हाँलाकि उर्दू में पारंगत लोगो के लिए यह किताब किसी खजाने की तरह है।
अगर जावेद साहब की तरकश की तरह इसमें भी उर्दू के अल्फाज़ के सामने ही उनके हिन्दी अर्थ लिखे जाते तो पढते समय लय बनी रहती। साथ ही किताब की बांइडिंग के हाल बहुत अच्छे नहीं मिलेंगे आपको, नई किताब को भी किसी पुरानी किताब की तरह संभाल कर पढ़ना होगा।
