The acclaimed four-part series now available in one complete box set.
The Earth is suffocating under toxic skies and there’s only one way for those left behind to escape – the space elevator that sits atop the massive structure known as the Reach.
Knile Oberend is an outcast, a man exiled for the crimes of his past. Thrown an unlikely lifeline, he has less than forty-eight hours to cash in his ticket at the top of the Reach and escape off-world.
Standing in his way are a legion of corrupt police, drug lords, and demons from his own past.
As time runs out, Knile will find himself embroiled in a war that threatens to destroy the entire Reach.
Mark R. Healy is an author and musician from Brisbane, Australia. From an early age he loved to create, and often assembled his own illustrated books with accompanying stories - and then forced his parents to buy them.
Unfortunately this model was not scalable and Mark now seeks to promote his works to a wider audience.
Mark has also combined his storytelling prowess with music, creating a project called ‘Hibernal’ through which he interweaves original sci-fi stories with his own music to create an immersive theatrical experience for the listener. Combined with a professional voice cast and sound effects, these “audio movies” are available online through iTunes, Bandcamp and Amazon under the name ‘Hibernal’.
Die Hard meets the Towering Inferno meets insert some Ridley Scott sci-fi movie here!
I know this is a book review but I am a visual person and when a story jumps off the page like this one does, I naturally progress to where I see it going. If a movie or TV director does not pick this up it will be a crying shame. This story is begging to be translated on to the screen.
If you have read the Silent Earth trilogy the books slowly ramp up in pace and intensity. A slow burn which turns into a bonfire. Early on in The Reach, Mark starts throwing kerosene on the fire and then he will throw sticks of dynamite on for good measure.
This is going to sound a bit left field but I love Seinfeld the TV show. It has an award winning main cast of four but the real character of the show in my opinion, is fully developed by its supporting cast. The Reach is built around three main characters Knile, Talia and Roman but its with the inclusion of its supporting cast that the story really comes alive. Ursie with her strange powers and the lovable old Tobias, Duran the cop who's trying to make sense of a world that no longer makes any sense at all. Zoe and Silvestri who have their own set of rules. And Lazarus the brick shit-house holy man who commands your attention and could have a novel all on his own.
This is one of the best sci-fi series on or off the planet. Read it and then like me, you can say you knew about it before it blew up onto the big screen.
I believe the greatest gift an author can impart is the ability to inspire the reader to want to create their own art. Even if they have zero ability to do so like myself!
Mark R Healy does this in spades every time I read his work or listen to his music.
This is a fantastic series. The pace is incredible and the plot really keeps you on the edge of your seat. I was hooked after the first chapter. I love that you also get hooked on the secondary characters as much as you do with the main ones! Ursie became one of my favourite characters ever. As with all Mr Healy's works the twists just keep coming. I highly recommend this series. It's my favourite of his works.
Loved this set of four books about the last working space elevator off an increasingly toxic earth, and the stories of those living in and around it, and trying to escape lives of hardship and drudgery. The central characters drew me in, I was invested in their individual stories and the collective one.
The characters were compelling. The story line gripping, I couldn't put the book down for waiting to see what happened to all my favorite characters. Perfect ending. Loved every minute of it.
All 4 books of the series, sequentially. Obviously, it held my interest for awhile, but I felt the author kept introducing more characters, or orthogonal plots, to keep things moving.
I’m still not sure if there was a message from this series, but I guess it was something like: “Do good to good people”.
This has been an epic adventure! Excellent character building that really draws your feelings out for them. Unpredictable situations where all hope is lost.... trust and betrayal tested to the extreme!! Mark has a true talent for capturing the reader's attention and holding it till the end. I thoroughly loved this series!
