Summer on the Côte d’Azur means tan bodies, wide beaches and glamorous nightclubs throbbing with the vitality of the rich and beautiful. So when Maggie Newberry arranges to meet an old boyfriend at the International Advertising Festival in Cannes, it’s no surprise she begins to feel the seduction of her old life.

But amidst the glamor, beautiful clothes and brilliant creative work on display, there is also the side of the business Maggie had forgotten was always there too. The petty rivalries, the dirty deals, the betrayals, are all still front and center. When the back-stabbing turns literal and the wife of Maggie’s childhood friend is accused of the murder, Maggie knows she has to help.

Along the way she needs to fight the police, Laurent, and even her own natural instincts about who she is now and the life she left behind.

She learns the hard way that the treachery rife in her old industry has since ramped up to a whole new level—one that her quiet life as a vigneron’s wife has not at all prepared her for…and one that could very well get her killed.

(Bonus: Laurent’s classic soupe de poisson recipe at the end of the book!)

Susan Kiernan-Lewis is a woman writing about a woman (Maggie Newberry) presumably for women. But not necessarily so. This book is a true thriller, set so authentically in the author's beloved south of France, that skips along, getting more tense by the chapter. It is not only well written (no surprises there) but is so very, very clever. And, by the way, despite being one of a series it stands alone successfully with beautifully drawn characters.

At the beginning of Murder in Cannes, Maggie Newberry is off to an international advertising conference accompanied by a previous boyfriend, his wife and two of his executives. When one of the ad-execs is murdered and her ex-boyfriend's wife held as a suspect, Maggie finds herself in the awkward position of investigating the murder.

Normally, I adore a Maggie Newbury mystery. This one fell a little flat for me. Several of the main characters seemed to act contrary to their usual manner and the storyline was strained.

I did, however, I love the description of Cannes - particularly the hotel. The author's words painted a vibrant picture and I now want to visit and experience it first-hand!

Although Murder in Cannes leans more to the cozy mystery side than my primary taste in mysteries, I do read cozies from time to time and I made the decision to read it based solely on location. Having stayed in the “Majestic” hotel (under new management since then) during a technology conference in Cannes and attended after-hours events at the Ritz-Carlton (within easy walking distance) where many of the events took place in this novel, I was excited to find this volume. Yet, as enjoyably as the venue for this mystery was described, there were several moments which shook me out of my disbelief.

I am trying not to spoil the plot because the book has its charm, but both within the heart of the story, as well as on the fringes, one finds (in no particular order of importance): a) a covert operation by the protagonist’s spouse (with a shady background), b) terrorism, c) bribery, d) jealousy, e) white slavery, f) marital discord, and, of course, murder. Combine this with some inconvenient misconceptions, miscommunication, and a couple of incredibly fortuitous instances of timing and luck. Perhaps, one will consider that too much is too much.

But between the “too much” are intriguing characterizations! Although I have never worked in advertising, I’ve been on the side of working with agencies and even dated one charming advertising professional when I was single. So, even the minor characters in this novel, taking place at a global advertising/marketing event in the famous Palais in Cannes, were of interest to me. I could relate to those who were attractive, flirtatious, and bibulous, as well as those who were snarky, jealous, and bitter. Most importantly, having gone from a party and event-laden job to the less glamorous halls of academia, I understood the protagonist’s second-guessing about leaving the industry.

Except for the stereotypical grumpy French homicide detective, I thought all of the characters were credible in their own right. I liked the complications in the protagonist’s relationships (which exacerbated the second-guessing discussed above. I liked the supporting characters’ reactions to missed signals and miscommunication. In short, the cozy part of this novel was strong while I felt the mystery part was strained. But, even though these novels take place in a delightful venue, I’m not sure they are likely to hit the top of my “to read” stack, again.

Murder in Cannes is the tenth book in the Maggie Newberry Mysteries series by Susan Kiernan-Lewis.
The Maggie Newberry series of books by Susan Kiernan-Lewis turned out to be a great cozy mystery series that kept me engrossed the whole way through. Throughout the series we follow thirty-something, Maggie Newberry, an advertising copywriter who has been unlucky in love. Her ‘normal’ life gets upended when her sister, who has been missing for quite some time, turns up dead. Then to add an extra layer of complication, Maggie must now travel to France to locate her young niece that she didn’t even know existed. Arriving in France, thing take a dangerous turn when her sister’s murderer then sets his sights on Maggie and her niece. Add in a sexy Frenchman to add a little extra layer of intrigue, plenty of dramatic developments, secrets, lies, crime & investigation, and the story takes an engrossing turn.
From book #2 onwards-
Maggie’s sexy (French) boyfriend, who we met in the first instalment has inherited an ancient vineyard in a small rural village in France- so Maggie quits her job and sets off for a year abroad. But trouble soon follows, when a vicious murder takes place, thrusting them into the middle of an investigation that links to a 50year-old murder. What happens makes for intriguing reading….and so the series unfolds, with each book bringing another cozy mystery for Maggie to investigate. Sprinkled with mystery suspense, tension, drama, danger, romance, marriage, motherhood, travel, and recipes- made this series a memorable read. It is a light-hearted and enjoyable series, the ‘clean’ stories mean there are no sexy times, violence, or profanity.

Happy Reading…

Thank you, Susan Kiernan-Lewis!

An Intriguing Murder Mystery

This was the first of the Maggie Newberry mysteries I've read, as well as the first of Susan Kiernan-Lewis's books. It was fantastic. It began with Maggie taking a weekend off from her family to meet up with an old friend and visit an advertising festival in Cannes. Although I jumped into the middle of the series, I was quickly caught up with the characters and felt like I understood their relationships. And France itself was quite charming. There were enough twists and complications to the story that I couldn't figure out who the murderer was or what the motive might be (or how things in Cannes were connected to the mysterious occurrences ar home), but it came together neatly in the end. On another note, I really appreciated Maggie and Laurent's relationship. It was difficult and raw but overall, mostly good. But rather than just giving us a simple, happily-ever-after ending, we were able to see the messiness of a real, enduring relationship. I look forward to reading more of Susan's books in the future.

A cozy mystery featuring a former American advertising executive turned wife and mother now living in France and blogging about the family vineyard. Maggie's long-time friend invites her to join them at the advertising awards in Cannes where she gets pulled into a murder mystery.

This is the first book with this character that I've read (it's #10 in the series) so I don't know if the insecurity Maggie shows here is due to the environment or if it's part of her character. I can see Maggie giving weight to something a long-time friend observes.

I have a harder time with Maggie not keeping the prior commitment she made to her friend Danielle to help organize the Lavender Fete and that she keeps rationalizing staying away from her husband and children.

I didn't think the book particularly well written. Part of it seems formulaic and part of it just seems simplified. Not having read other books in the series, I can't tell for sure if each book follows the same pattern. I wouldn't go actively seek out other books in the series.

Life surprises

Well paced mystery and crime story attracts the interest of the reader from the beginning. Maggie goes to Cannes to welcome and old boyfriend and gets involved in a double murder. The complications of her investigation got her risking her life and freedom. Her ex boyfriend, wife, and friends were not what they seem to be, they are hiding m any secrets. Everything is worthy because at the end she appreciates how much happiness her life as a wife and mother brings to her. Her husband learned to express more openly his feelings for her and their children. All is good at the end until Maggie gets involved in another mistery...

Love this author!

The story is set in Cannes, France, during the international awards festival for marketing professionals and firms. Maggie, now married and living in France with her husband a children, joins her childhood best friend and adult boyfriend and his marketing team when they arrive. Things don't go as expected in any way from the planning to the actual meet and greet. It's good into your hard for a wild ride, as people start to die! Exciting and unexpected. Don't read the last chapter first or it will ruin the shocking truth! Highly recommended.

Enjoyable. It's nice to read a somewhat "cozy" mystery without too much blood and gore. Oh, yes, there is some, but it's manageable. There is mention about some blood affliction that one character's wife has, and that I find ridiculous. Women who faint at the sight of blood. Really? They see it and deal with it every month.

Only one error that stood out for me: a sentence that needs parsing. I found it laughable that Laurent held his daughter "Mila in his arms as the sun went down and frowned." The sun went down and frowned?

Maggie had a boyfriend for many years, when a Frenchman swept her off her feet. She always felt guilty, about the way she ended it. Now a chance to met him, and unknowly there was a wife and another woman traveling together.. Things were not like she had thought or hoped. She was not dressed appropriately and the rivalries in the advertising business she had forgotten about. A murder happened so fast and at a restaurant they were dining at. When he was accused she felt she had to help. Even though she was told to come home. Can be read as a stand alone. Good page turner

Maggie is becoming too predictable

I’ve always enjoyed the Maggie Newberry books, but I found that as I read this one I began to question just how naive a grown woman with two children could be. She repeatedly puts herself in dangerous situations such as walking down empty, dark alleys alone. The only thing that keeps me reading is trying to figure out who the villain is. In this case it was, as usual, a surprise.

Love Maggie

Maggie is an American living in France. From the beginning of the series where she meets and falls in love with the mysterious Laurant, nothing is ever calm. Maggie gets into many scrapes along the way. Oh yes, she is also a devoted mother. For anyone interested in France and French food this will not disappoint.

Murder in Cannes

This is a delightful book to be read on a rainy afternoon on your porch sipping tea. This is the first book that I’ve read of the Maggie Newberry series. Solving murders and crime is her pastime whether she actively seeks them out or no. I’m ready for the next one in this series.

Great book!

This is the first I've read from this author and it won't be the last. It was a very fast paced storyline and kept me wanting to shake Maggie and tell her to go home where it was safe. The ending was surprising, as well. I had the murderer picked but I was so wrong! Read the book!

Very disappointed. One unbelievable event after another. After barely surviving a drowning, Maggie returns and calls the equivalent of 911 only after making two other calls despite the fact her assailant is threatening to blow up the entire Festival. Even good writing couldn't rationalize this and this writing is certainly not that.

Love/Hate

I have a live/hate relationship with this series. Prior to finishing this book I hated the way Maggie yielded to Laurent’s autocratic manner. Things are changing so I will persevere. I do enjoy the writing and the story.

Murder in Cannes (Maggie Newberry Mysteries #10) by Susan Kiernan-Lewis

This is the most interesting and suspense filled book I have read by this author. Maggie visits Cannes to see a childhood friend and participate in a meeting of advertising professionals, an industry in which she had previously worked. Maggie sees a lot of changes in the industry since she left nine years before. She begins questioning her own life career, marriage; the two children and husband she loves dearly. As always, murder and mayhem prevails.

This book gets a four-star rating. This is simply a very good murder mystery keeping the reader in suspense to the end.
