Luca Wessex is Dragon Spawn. Son of a human mother and a Red Dragon father, he has been trying his best all his life just to survive and get by. His father is abusive, his mother is dead, and most recently, a vicious and dangerous group of neighborhood Spawn have begun trying to recruit him as a member of their gang. When a pushy and gorgeous Golden Dragon named Dmitri appears, full of questions about the gang and his role in it, Luca tries to cooperate, but he’s no snitch. Suspicious, the gang attacks Luca one evening while he’s working, and he’s rescued by Dmitri, who then kidnaps him and—for his own safety, he claims—takes him to his home in what some say is the most remote spot on Earth, an area of Russia called the Kamchatka Peninsula.
Dmitri has come home with a treasure, because what Luca doesn’t know is that he isn’t a Spawn at all but a species called a dragonet and the very last one of his kind. Because of a mysterious prophecy, Dmitri has discovered the beautiful boy’s life is in danger and he wants desperately to save him. But Dmitri is up against not only another Dragon, but also a powerful mage. Dmitri takes Luca under his wing—literally—and they begin to navigate a minefield of love and dangerous ancient prophecy. For the first time in Dmitri’s life, something is becoming more important to him than treasure, if only he can hold onto it.
I mostly liked it. The plot was unusual, the characters were well-written, the background well-developed. There was plenty of adventure, fighting and heebie jeebies. I had slight issues with main characters though. They were not really likable. Luca was constantly contradicting himself, very often he acted like a brat and threw temper tantrums. It was slightly irritating. As for Dimitri - I never really warmed up to him. He was conceited, arrogant and rude. He excuses his rudeness in the beginning as an attempt to hide his physical attraction to Luca but as the book progresses he does not change much if at all. He continues to be heavy-handed, bossy and down right insulting sometimes. So it was very hard to relate to both of them. And the end of the book although plot wise was well-written and explained the relationship between Luca and Dimitri was rushed. Suddenly there were I love you's and prove it to me for all eternity kind of vibe. It wanted more in my opinion.
This series opens on a new dragon world, one that includes several types of dragons, half dragons called Spawn, wyverns known as dragonets, and wizards. It’s an alternate reality where dragons were discovered in the 19th century as humans finished exploring Earth, and both sides have come to an uneasy peace. There is a mysterious prophesy as well, but its existence and full meaning take a while to make an appearance. Both main characters are stubborn, proud, and don’t exactly get along for quite a while, and I found their antics quite amusing.
This book was short and easy, with some interesting world building and a few reasonably descriptive sexy scenes. The mains, Luca and Dmitri, fight a lot, but since we spend most of out time in Luca's head, and Luca has the attention span of a goldfish, there's very little drama and angst.
There were several very strange writing choices. The book opens with Luca waiting to meet Dmitri at a gay bar, which is a cute scene, and it's a little funny as well, but which also means we are cheated out of seeing Dmitri and Luca's first meeting, they very loosely describe it, but this is a pretty strange skip for a romance novel. Dmitri's appearance is also described strangely, Luce notes that he's wearing tight leather pants, and a tight tee shirt and talks about how much he likes the look of Dmitri's ass and all his clearly visible shoulder and back muscles, but then he also says that Dmitri is also wearing a long leather coat, begging the question, how can he see either Dmitri's ass or his shoulder and back muscles? Later in the chapter (same night, same interaction) Luca thinks about how he can see Dmitri's bulge in 'his jeans', forcing me to assume that at some point in the evening Dmitri went to the bathroom and changed pants without Luca making any note of it.
There were a lot of little mistakes like this. I don't mind overlooking grammar and spelling issues, when they don't make things too confusing, but the bigger issue was the plot inconsistencies. For instance *possible spoiler* Dmitri and his friend Sebastian introduce themselves to Luca as Dragon Agents of some kind. They even show him some sort of badges, Luca never says what sort of agents they are claiming to be, and given that they never report to any superiors, or bring up being agents of/for anything again, we're left to assume that it was a ruse to gain Luca's trust. But as far as I could tell Luca never even notices the lie. He seems to totally forget that they introduced themselves as agents at all. In another scene Luca briefly runs away and drives for hours before stopping at a random motel for the night. When he wakes up Dmitri is there and Luca never wonders how he found him. There's no explanation given at all.
Things like this really undercut what does work about the book, which is a real shame.
You know, I have to say that this one surprised me; from the different types of dragons and their ‘origin’, to a plot that had a surprising amount of depth to it, I enjoyed this one from start to finish.
Luca was a great main character; he had a rough upbringing, ignored and abused in turns. Yet, in spite of all that, he refused to turn to the gangs like so many others in his situation did and is grateful everyday for the chance at a job and to live the way he wants to. Besides all that, Luca is feisty and has an attitude much larger than his smaller frame would suggest. Dimitri is arrogant and pushy and used to getting his way but I really didn’t expect any less based on how he was raised and his dragon type. Colors denote certain characteristics when it comes to dragons in this book and while someone reading about Dimitri might hate him for his sense of self entitlement, I just took it in stride. What made Dimitri great was when he finally had his big epiphany about Luca and made plans then and there to fix things.
There was a lot of unexpected action early on in the story which served to grab my attention and every time I started to settle into the story, something else would happen that would keep me glued to the pages. Like I said, there was a lot more depth to this than I was originally expecting and by the end of the book I was hooked. There is a scene near the end that confused me at first and I ended up re-reading it but it does get explained for anyone that doesn’t know what happened. That was really my only complaint about this; I just love where the authors took the story and the set up for the rest of the series has me really looking forward to reading the sequel!
If you enjoy urban fantasy, dragons, and a plot that’s a bit more convoluted than expected, I’d recommend giving this one a look.
An ancient prophecy and a dragonet who thinks he's a Spawn. An arrogant Golden Dragon. A descendant of the Pendragon line of Mages. Good sex scenes. Not the typical Dom/sub vibe you get from one of Ms. West's stories. A fun read well worth the price.
3 stars...barely. This was a cute story, but with the high ratings this story has gotten so far, I expected more; but it's still just your run-of-the-mill shifter novellas. There were so many unanswered questions- for stupid things that have nothing to do with the story, and that's what makes it so ridiculous--> 1-How did Dmitri find Luca in that hotel in Florida? did he have a tracker on him? 2-How did they get Luca out of the country? I assume he didn't have a passport since he was poor and had never even been outside of Atlanta. 3-Why on earth did Dmitri think it was a good idea to take Luca to his house in Russia, which you know....is only RIGHT NEXT TO the bad guy's house. What the actual hell? 4- Overall, the characters, like many romances, weren't at all developed. You have your classic overbearing macho man and your 'wild' and 'hot-tempered' beautiful lass....lad. Both characters I wanted to hit upside the head throughout the story. The rest of the characters practically weren't more than introduced, let alone do any of them have personalities. And where the hell did the three humans come from at the end? Who are they? Dumb. Overall, it wasn't anything special or new and in fact had a lot more holes than other similar stories. BUT, that being said, it's still an enjoyable quick read and these types of stories are my guilty pleasure, so I'll probably read the next in the series.
The Last Dragonet is the first book in the Dragon Prophecies by authors Shannon West and Susan E Scott. I love this start to what promises to be a great series. Luca is meeting with the dragons. He is trying to keep the meeting on the down low. So this meeting is in a gay leather bar. Who would think such an important meeting would be here right. The dragons don’t look very thrilled about the venue either. While dragons tend to be pansexual they were also easily offended and could beat the snot out of him. Luca himself is a dragon spawn. He has a cool patch of scales on his back that looks almost like a tat. Half pure dragon half human, and one foot in each world. Kinda like being the kid no one really wants but has to put up with. Dimitri and his brother are both golden dragons. Good looking. Some kind of government agents. They were there to stop some bad spawns from causing havoc. Dimitri soon finds himself drawn to Luca. He knows he is the one for him but they both are in the middle of sensitive talks can they find love in the most unlikely of places and stay alive long enough to have it? I really enjoyed this story and want more! Bring on the dragons and those who love them.
The Last Dragonet is a lovely story about a lower class/caste dragon courted by a privileged pure breed dragon for possibly nefarious reasons. Through the young dragon’s journey he learns the true meaning of family, bravery, and love. This is the first volume of what will likely be a delightful series. Kudos to the authors for a somewhat unpredictable and entertaining novel.
Why oh why did I wait so long to read this!!!! It was AWESOME & frustrating I read it in one setting & will probably do the same for the next book - there was so much in this book that had me obsessed - history knights of the round table King Arthur dragons hot sexy men!!!!!! I could go on & on & on!!!!! Thank you so much you are one of my favorite authors - Lori
Almost gave up at the last 10%. I liked it at the beginning, but Luca grated on my nerves. By the end I was almost hoping he'd come to a tragic end which is never a good thing when you're supposed to be reading a romance novel...oops.
Shannon West is always hit or big miss for me. This one was just a big miss unfortunately.
I had a hard time with the relationship in this one. There didn't seem to be any chemistry, they were just like violently attracted to each other. I did like the concept though. Definitely needed another round with the editor, the amount of grammatical errors was quite distracting and kept taking me out of the story. Overall cool idea but needs a lot of work.

This was a great series starter, interesting characters and an engaging storyline made this a page turning read. I loved the mystical aspect of the story itself and I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
I have read almost all of Shannon's books.I enjoy them... Luca is a force to be reckoned with, Dimitri has his hands full with him. It's funny, and overall a great story. You will not be disappointed if you buy this one.
Second Reading Nov. 2018. I liked this a bit better on second reading: 4 stars Rating: 3.5 stars If I have one complaint about this story, it would be that it wrapped up a little too quickly. While the ending wasn't exactly abrupt, it did come to a conclusion quickly and it did leave a lot to be concluded in future installments. That being said, I really enjoyed this first installment in the Dragon Prophesies series.
The story is told in the first person from both Dmitri's and Luca's perspective. I must say that I liked Luca's voice a bit more than Dmitri's. Dmitri was a little bit overbearing, but he was still likeable. Luca on the other hand was stubborn and gave him a run for the money. He didn't always make the right decisions, but his heart was in the right place.
I really liked this world of Spawns and Dragons that these authors created and cannot wait to read the next book in the series.
