He was the guardian. He would protect his saint, no matter what it took...

Black and Miri get thrown into the middle of a high-profile murder case when one of Miri's ex-clients becomes the next victim. When the body is found, beheaded and tied to a pier, detectives arrive in San Francisco from Los Angeles, convinced it's the infamous serial killer they've been hunting, known only by his media name of "the Templar."

When the Templar continues to cut a swath through San Francisco, his victims begin to show a new pattern, however--a pattern that appears to have Miri at its center.

To complicate everything, Miri and Black are going through a Seer-mate bonding, and having a strange effect on everyone around them as a result. When Black decides to use his old black ops connections to try and find the killer, Miri is left in San Francisco to try and help Nick, until the killer forces both of them into a final showdown.

Book four in the paranormal mystery romance series starring brilliant but dangerous psychic detective, Quentin Black, and his partner, forensic psychologist Miri Fox.

Black Is Back is the fourth engrossing instalment in the Quentin Black Mystery series by J.C. Andrijeski. WHY? WHY? WHY? Have I not discovered this author before now? I have seriously been missing out on some stellar reads, and that is something I plan to remedy starting immediately. This turned out to be quite the epic book binge- and I enjoyed every single second- even if the author constantly had my heart in my mouth, or had me pulling my hair out in frustration, or seemed to delight in toying with my emotions pretty much the entire time- I willingly went back for more each and every time. Sixteen books in and I can’t wait for more!!!
Seriously, this series truly is a MUST-READ, especially for anyone who loves really original paranormal mysteries with incredible world-building and scene setting. If you love immersive reads, then this is definitely the series for you!
But be warned, this isn’t a ‘light and fluffy’ cozy paranormal mystery- this has plenty of gritty, raw, violent, emotive, and a ‘hang on to your seat’ and brace yourselves because this is going to get INTENSE situations. There are potential triggers contained through the series- such as violence, murder, abuse, sexual abuse, manipulation, graphic language and more. So keep that in mind if you are sensitive to any of those subjects.
I stumbled on this series purely by accident, and this is another fortuitous find of late, because not only was I hooked on the story within the first few pages and practically inhaled the entire series back-to-back…. it is also turned out to be entirely addictive reading, with Ms. Andrijeski’s stellar storytelling talents, her clever and intriguing touches, the many well-developed and interesting characters, the brilliant ‘world’ creation, and all the other rich layers and ‘flavours’ she poured into her pages, made the real world fade away as I was swept along on adventure after adventure.
J.C. Andrijeski’s world building skills are sheer perfection, putting me front and centre to all the action-packed developments in this immersive, captivating, and addictive book/series. I am so hooked on her work now and will happily devour anything she ever produces- so I see plenty of book binges in my future.
This is a heart-stopping, action-packed, intense, mystery with a serial killer, tension, intrigue, seers, vampires, chemistry, sizzle, science fiction, crime and investigation, deadly games of cat and mouse, murder, violence drama, danger, friendship, and so much more that I won’t get into here because I really don’t want to spoil it for you.
Ms. Andrijeski has a bold, dynamic, and very vivid writing style that easily brings her story to life- it was like watching a movie play out before my eyes, The descriptions are quite detailed and painted a powerful picture- I really could see this making a fantastic movie or television series.
Highly Recommended Reading!!!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, J.C. Andrijeski!

This review encompasses the entire 4 book Quentin Black Mystery series. I've read works by this author in the past and enjoyed them. I also really enjoyed this series.

I did get a little frustrated with the lack of answers at times, the fact that Miri doesn't truly pursue them, and on the rare occasions she does ask she doesn't seem to get them. I really would have liked for Miri to have shown much more interested in her own genetics and non-human half. Perhaps the author explores that further in the other Quentin Black series - sadly since I know it's vampire related I won't be pursuing reading that series in spite of my enjoyment of this one. Vampires just don't really interest me much.

I also got a little frustrated the with constant pain and pushing/pulling of light. Miri was a bit of an annoying character, as much as I wanted to like her. For a psychologist she really didn't seem to understand people's motivations and personalities other than those of the criminals she profiled.

Overall however, I did really enjoy the character of Black himself, and the mysteries and crimes these two needed to solve. I also enjoyed the secondary characters of Nick and Angel. I read the four books in this series in quick succession because I was very into it.

Same tense relationship, search for a serial killer, friendships tested

Like Books 1, 2, 3, Book 4 develops the tense, intense relationship between Míriam and Quentin (Mr. Black). Their misunderstandings of each other are slowly revealed and resolved via conversations and energy exchanges. Their dynamic is complicated by their cultural differences and expectations, fears, insecurities, and Quentin speaking his native language to Miriam, who doesn't understand it. We also experience the layers of energy, thought, and emotion that seers perceive and experience of others through the POVs of Míriam, Quentin, and the serial killer they hunt. Miriam's friendships are also complicated on both ends by Miriam's new needs, behaviors, abilities, and concerns.
Just as convoluted is the anxious search for the killer as the police, FBI, Miriam, Quentin, and his security company investigate horrific murders.

So, great character development and relationship development, both seamlessly interwoven with great action and a great plot. In a word, amazing!

I'm really enjoying this paranormal sci-fi mystery series. I'm truly bummed that my local library system doesn't have the subsequent books available for check out. I'll have to pause my binge reading of this series until I can afford to collect the subsequent Kindle format and do the text-to-speech reading option since they have yet to be published in audiobook format.

Length: 9 hrs and 30 mins
Release date: 03-05-19

Overall - 4 stars
Story - 3.5 stars! There were a few times that I was confused and had to rewind and listen again for clarity. The plot development overall has been very intriguing, enough so that I would like to continue reading this series even though there are no more books available beyond this 4th one in audiobook.
Narration - 5 stars! I love this narrator's style of acting for both female and male characters.

Quentin and Miri have spent the whole time they've been back from Paris in a sexual haze basically. They have to come up for air though when one of Miri's former clients turns up dead and it might tie into a serial killer. Black takes off to track down some leads and tells Miri he needs space. He doesn't understand why she still holds back from him. The killings start to get more and more personal for Miri and they can't figure out why he fixated on her specifically.

It got a tad annoying that Black expected Miri to act like a Seer even though she is only half and wasn't even aware of it a few months ago.. I felt like he really needed to chill. I also feel like Miri was entitled to her feelings and I didn't like that Nick and Angel basically turned on her. But it was still, highly entertaining and I can't wait to read the next part of the series.

𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝑰𝒔 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒌, Quentin Black Mysteries, Book #4
by J.C. Andrijeski

Well, the author redeemed herself somewhat with this entry to the book series. 𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 𝑰𝒔 𝑩𝒂𝒄𝒌 is a much more introspective look at the relationship between Quentin Black and Dr. Miriam Fox. Is there still an alarming amount of Konrath-like over-the-top violence and mental illness? Yes, and not all of it was aimed at people (yep, that was the star off).

However, the book showed Andrijeski's usual great plotting, pacing and flow, as well as very good editing and proofing, consistent, if unexplained still in the 4th book, characters, lots of drama and action, and few definite surprises.

So, as I'm currently doing a Kindle Unlimited trial, I'll read more in the series, beginning with book 5.

Black and Miri have to be two of my favorite characters I have discovered in the past year and their story is adddictive. The chemistry between the couple is explosive. Black is just dreamy, all that alien dna wrapped up in a butt-kicking, macho, protective, and so endearingly sweet package. Black is Back finds the couple tracking a killer beheading evil doers in the name of justice. Quoting Bible verses and packing a sword, the Templar begins killing in Miri's next of the woods, drawing her and black into the investigation to find the killer. Fast-paced with plenty of action, the Templar brings danger to Miri and Black as they struggle to understand their relationship and what it means.

Really hooked on this series, wish I'd found this author before... the world of alpha-detective-seer Quentin Black and his GF, Miri (forensic-psych-seer-doc) starts off great, and continues to be a riveting and suspenseful story to the end.... only read a few other paranormal series, but really like this one, and it's Black that "makes" these books. The world building is done gradually... here we really get deep into Black and Miri's relationship, and I'm now quite invested in feeling like I know so much about her friends, and really want to see where the other relationships are headed... what is going to happen. Q.B. and Miri become more and more "seer-bonded" in this story.

I love seeing Black and Miri as a couple. I especially like seeing them work through their different understandings of the world. This was a gritty mystery, though I wasn’t as caught by surprise as I think I was supposed to be. I’m going to give credit to my suspicious, anti-social nature that just doesn’t trust anyone for how I spotted the real culprit in spite of all the enticing red herrings thrown in our way. The next book was one of the very first I ever read in this series. Knowing what’s coming, I’m a bit reluctant to dive head-first into the next book. I will, but I’m already braced for the shock I’m about to be hit with.

Excellent

This series is definitely one of my favourites out there right now. I really enjoy all the characters and the plots, the pacing and the dialogue. This is another excellent instalment and; whilst it can be read on its own I would highly recommend starting with book one and working through them in order. Even better the whole series is currently available via Kindle Unlimited.

Great series

I really enjoyed reading this entire series. It kept my interest throughout and now I will be looking at the other books to get a deeper understanding of the characters and some of the situations. Very well written if I would have known I would get sucked in like this I would have bought all of them together instead of waiting. Thank you for giving me a new author to look for

Murder, secrets, psychics......

A dangerously lethal mix. All the suspense of regular crime novels with paranormal aspects thrown in to kick it up another notch. Black and Miri have little time to solve the murders that seem to be zeroing in on Miri. And they need to do it while fixing some issues in their personal life at the same time. These two are hot and I'm ready for the next book!

I really like Black!

The curve ball with this one. I didn't see the person being who it was; however close enough. Constant suspense and excitement... This book is a sure page turner. To be honest, Black endures ALOT for Miriam... I mean how many times does he have to be injured! And her insecurities is page draining. Overall, good series 👍!!!

The romance continues with Miriam and Quentin as they are in a kind of honeymoon phase. And they get to solve a mystery that doesn't have anything do with their being seers.

Not a stand alone book.

Contains sex scenes, swear words (mostly the F word), and violence (beheadings, shooting, stalking, fight).

I simply enjoy this series -- the plots are layered, the characters are wonderful, and the writer is building suspense with the main thread that joins each of the books so far. I love every new reveal about the relationship between Miri and Black. I've pre-ordered book 5 and I'm waiting anxiously to continue the story line.

A murderer dubbed the Templer, because of the use of a sword, was believed to have moved cities and was now causing havoc in San Francisco. Miri is pulled into the saga because one of the victims had previously been her client. Black also was involved, because of a possibility that Miri was the central figure of this killers latest MO.

This series keeps moving forward without becoming old. There are always more secrets to reveal, and the author does a good job with the shock factor in revealing some of them. Good action, good sexy romance. What more could you want in escapist reading?

A real thriller of a book. My main problem with it is many of the characters are paranormals; and that just isn't my favorite genre. At that, the writing is good and the characters have interesting back stories.

In the fourth installment of this addictive series, Black and Miri are involved in another puzzling murder. Black begins Miri’s training in ‘sight’ but things turn deadly when the killer views Black as an obstacle to completing his mission. Another thrilling read!
