"He'd be fresh meat here. And he didn't have his sight..."

Black takes a new consulting gig with the LAPD, helping them find a contract killer who left a dead body behind the Los Angeles Theater. Despite Miri's lingering fears after what happened to him during the last murder case he worked, he assures her it's routine, that he won't be doing fieldwork, that nothing could possibly go wrong.

Then, during his first night on the job at the Port of Los Angeles, all hell breaks loose and all bets are off.

Black wakes up in a nightmare he couldn't have foreseen, with no way out and no idea how he got there. Robbed of his psychic sight, he can't even call to Miriam for help, or use his abilities to figure out where he is, who took him, or what they want from him.

On the outside, Miri is frantic, working with the police and Black's team to find him. She has even less information than Black... until a confession from her Uncle Charles brings her face to face with a much older enemy, the same enemy that may have killed her entire family.

BLACK AND BLUE is book five in the paranormal mystery romance starring brilliant but dangerous psychic detective, Quentin Black, and his partner, forensic psychologist Miri Fox.

𝑩𝒍𝒂𝒄𝒌 & 𝑩𝒍𝒖𝒆, Quentin Black Mystery $5; Quentin Black: Shadow Wars #1
by J.C. Andrijeski

I'm done with this series. Not because I've read all the books, because I haven't. There are several more in the series. I'm stopping because this series is not focused on moving the characters forward, unless you consider being raped multiple times by multiple persons or creatures, or being beaten to within an inch of your life -- graphically, or being kidnapped (3 times in 5 books), or being kept in the dark about your true nature through 5 books, or other patently sick activity being moved forward. I almost quit after Book 3, and then the there seemed to be some sort of switch in the second half of Book 4. But no, Book 5 not only backslid, but wholly endorsed the let's-see-how-disgusting-I-can-write factor that seems to be this author's trademark. Let's face it, with several books in the series following the one you are reading, you don't have to seriously worry about the main characters' survival, but I do think any reader anxious to continue in the series should worry about their sanity.

Yes, the plotting, pacing and flow are good. The proofing and editing not so much, but okay. I actually like both the main characters. But I spent this entire last book either rolling my eyes at the vicious violence, almost all of which was sexual, or just wondering why the fuck I keep reading. So, I'm done.

Here are some of the really stupid editing/proofing errors:

Page 107 and 108, 30%, Chapter 8: 𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑴𝒊𝒓𝒓𝒐𝒓 𝑪𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒌'𝒅 𝑭𝒓𝒐𝒎 𝑺𝒊𝒅𝒆 𝑻𝒐 𝑺𝒊𝒅𝒆. This was the name of the boat used in the kidnapping in this book. It's also the name of an Agatha Christie novel. I thought certainly there would be some sort of literary connection to the plot of the Christie book and this one. Nope. Not even the vaguest thread of connection. I think perhaps Andrijeski did not even know the Christie book existed. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mir...

Page 140, 38%, Chapter 12: ...out of whoever they sent. Yes, I know I'm old school. I don't care, it's WHOMever.

Page 166, 45%: ...he heard him smile again. Well, I suppose the author could say, 'it's a fantasy,' or 'but Black is a seer,' but Black was also wearing a seer power-dampening collar. He did not hear a smile. Even without the collar he wouldn't HEAR a smile. SMH

Page 201 55%: Mondragon. That's a name, so not really wrong. I spent some time trying to decide how to pronounce it. Mahn Dragon? Mahndraggin'? MoonDragon? MahnDRAgoon? All that kept running through my mind was the term mondegreen, which refers to misunderstood song lyrics, so of course, I'm thinking George Abdo and CCR. {Shrug}

I read to be entertained. There was not a single thing entertaining in this book. In any case, I can't continue with this series and consider myself either a sane or decent human being. I'm truly done.

This is totally different from my normal reads, but in a great way. This writer has quite a unique style and as I kept reading, I found that I could picture this as a movie. Excellent character formation! The storyline has a paranormal meets Jason Bourne feel . Page after page I was kept intrigued almost impatiently! I really needed to find out where this was going and what happens. And there it is...that is exactly how you get someone to read something that isn't their normal...you hook them so good they just have to! This book is action packed and so well written the scenes perfectly form in your minds eye. It's been a sheer pleasure to have the opportunity to review this ARC.

I think this series might have finally lost me. I love reading about Quentin and Miri...together. They were not together at all in this book. It was Black being thrown in prison and sexually assaulted while Miri tries to find him. Also, I feel like early in this series Black was built up as this super smart badass but that doesn't seem to be the case. He is constantly walking into traps and seems completely oblivious most of the time. I may finish this series eventually, just to see how it ends. But I'm in no rush.

My quick reaction review

🌟Minor spoilers below alert!🌟

How Miriam was able to convince Brick it was in his best interest to let Quentin go asap in the last quarter of this very intriguing 5th book of this series didn't cross my mind until she explained it to her two assigned bodyguards. Sheer genius🙌🏽🫶🏽 Bravo! 👏🏽🍾🥂

Quentin's embarrassed confession about how Puzzle, a fellow government lab captive and young vampire with an obsession with the film Willy Wonka and The Chocolate Factory had conditioned him to have an involuntary sexual response during Puzzle's blood feedings off of Quentin, was incredibly hard to hear. I wanted to hug him for his bravery🥹And, I crazy loved Miriam's fiercely loyal and possessive reaction to his painful confession. It was everything and oh so perfect. You just know that she couldn't have said anything else to make him see there was no cause for shame.

This has been a great series so far. I would be much further along in it if all the books beyond book 4 had also been released in the audiobook format. I'm looking forward to book 6, Black of Mood, after I finish another e-book read by another author in a different genre that is also not available as of yet in audiobook.

Final thoughts:I highly recommend this long running Quentin Black series if you enjoy paranormal mixed in with suspense. The world building and plot development have been on point from the beginning.

I received a copy of Black and Blue by JC Andrijeski in exchange for an honest review.
Note: this review contains spoilers!
Quentin and Miriam are back in the fifth installment of the Quentin Black Mysteries. Newly married Quentin has agreed to help the police stop a murder. He'll be safe in a squad car away from the action, or at least that's what everyone thinks. Everyone except the monsters who are out to kidnap him. Ever since coming to Earth, Quentin has relied on his powers, especially his power to read people, to keep others safe. On the that fateful night while safely tucked away in the car, Quentin loses his psychic powers; he is blind to what is going on around him and cannot reach Miriam . Even so, he feels his first responsibility is to protect the law enforcement personnel. Instead, Quentin is drugged and kidnapped.
The battle lines are drawn as he and Miriam fight to get him free. Miriam shows her strengths and love as she pulls in ever marker that Quentin held and some of her own to get her husband home. As the days turn into weeks, others think of giving up, but Miriam will not. Even as the separation sickness tears at her body and mind, she fights.
Quentin fights his own wars as he wakes in prison with a dreaded sight-restraint collar around his neck. He fights as he is viciously attached in the prison yard as the guards watch. He fights the people who have put him in that hell hole as they demand obedience and cooperation. As he recovers from the brutality, he fights to get the collar removed so he can be free. All of these are small battles compared to what awaits for him at the hidden research facility his is taken to. Here he finally learns what is so different about the subjects at the facility and the people controlling him. They are vampires.
As Quentin fights to stay alive and sane, his blood is drained by Puzzle, a vampire. Puzzle takes more than the blood: he takes Quentin’s memories. The ultimate violation is when Puzzle manipulates Quentin’s mind and body to crave sex every time Puzzle feeds.
Quentin’s fight isn't over yet. He still must leave the research center so that he can lead his original captors back to the center so that it can be destroyed. The blood loss from all of the feedings has Quentin in an almost catatonic state. He is free, but his need for Miriam and his now programmed response to the feedings have him ready to fall off the cliff of sanity.
Miriam is his savior as she nows has to fight all of Quentin’s demons and her own fears.
After all of the fights and contrasts in this book, JC Andrijeski brings about a masterful resolution as Miriam states and Quentin reaffirms,
“I belong to you, Miri. I belong to you.”
“For how long?”
“Forever, wife.”

Wow! What an explosive beginning, surprises galore in the middle and a tense conclusion to wrap it up. Miri and Quentin can’t seem to stay out of trouble and in fact seem to find more as time goes by.
Miri and Black are struggling to adjust after Black’s recovery from a bullet wound. This has Miri fearing Black going back to work and worsened the intensity of their seer feelings for each other. Something feels off to both of them but neither are sure if it is just Miri’s separation pain or if something is really wrong. As you can guess with these two, something is most definitely wrong but it isn’t anything anyone could predict.
This author has the ability to make the reader feel the angst of the characters when they need to be apart in a way no other author does. It is unique and intense. The story is fully action packed and will keep you guessing constantly. There are several longer plot lines that you just know they will be back for more and I can’t wait. Miri has really changed since she has known Black and in a lot of good ways. I love the fact that the characters don’t wait for something bad to happen to realize they need to talk to one another seriously. It is nice to see a healthy relationship in literature sometimes. Healthy doesn’t mean boring and these two are never boring.
If you like the Allie’s War series, you will like this one but I suggest starting at the beginning. If you have been following along with Quentin Black, you will not be disappointed. If you love paranormal, suspense and romance, start with Book 1 and hang on.

SUSPENSE AND MYSTERY FROM BEGINNING TO END!!!! SUPERB!!!!

This is the fifth book in the Quentin Black Mystery Series. Unfortunately I have not read the previous books - but I think that I am going to have to - just to get further background on the characters of Miriam and Quentin. My lack of backgraound did not stop me from enjoying this book, it actually made me want to get the other books and read them as well.

The action takes place the minute you commence reading this book and continues until the very final page - it keeps you addicted throughout the entire story.

It was really enjoyable to see such a strong female character in Miriam. She had to come forward with her strength, wiles and love in order to rescue her brand new husband, Quentin. This book had everything that a reader craves, when looking for a good mystery novel, action, intrigue and a whole lot of twists and surprises, that force the reader to want to continue without putting the book down.

Ms Grace writing style is a plasure to read as it flows beautifully from one scene and idea into another. There is no jumping or hesitation, that often occurs in books of this nature.

I will definitely be going back for more of this author.

Definitely a FIVE STAR read from me.

I was given this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I haven't actually read the other books yet. But after reading the first 2 chapters of this one, I can't wait to catch up. Black and Miriam seem like fun characters to read and that's just from chapter 2.
Black has agreed to be a consultant for the LAPD and is taking Miriamm along with him for alone time inbetween. Little do they all know it's a trap, to capture Black. This is when all hell breaks loose. Black is kidnapped and locked away and has to endure alot in this new hell he has been shoved in to. All the while thinking of getting out to Miriam.  While on the out side Miriam is doing everything in her power to find her husband, including agreeing to the help her Uncle Charles offers aswel as all Black's colleagues. And let's be honest she has become one badass when the man she loves has been taken from her. God help those who hurt him when she finds put. Everything Black went through OMG!!!! I'm amazed he is still sane. My heart broke for him. I mean what the hell? He just couldn't catch a break. I've fallen in love with Black, he is amazing, and a little crazy. I'm definately going to go back and read the other books. OMG!!!!

I received a ARC of this book for an honest review.

Miri and Quentin are only recently mated and trying to get used to the bond which is exacerbated because she doesn't necessarily understand all the implications of what happens during the establishment of it. Quentin takes a consulting job against Miri's judgement as a way of getting back to working after a recent injury. Unfortunately it does not go to plan and Quentin is kidnapped and given a task to do before he gets his freedom. As part of his kidnapping he has his abilities blocked so cannot feel or communicate with Miri. This means they both get the side effects of an establishing mating bond and all that entails. Miri does everything she can to find Black and work out the mystery of who has him.

I found the style of this book very enjoyable. The characters were very real and believable and the story addictive - I was certainly seeing the story and characters in my mind as I was reading it (a bit like watching a film). I found myself reading faster as I got further through the book as I NEEDED to know what happened next. Definitely recommended and worth reading.

*** Received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review ***
This is another addition to a dramatic and mystical story of Quentin Black and Miriam Fox. This one takes them to L. A. on a unusual set-up mission by one of the other city of angels ( alien civilization), who risk an all out war with the psychics. The author set the storyline up nicely to play mind games with the reader and MAN, is it delectable! The story begin with Black being kidnapped, torture, raped, experimented on and held capture  by Viktor Konstantin organization or should I say Brick. The things Black endured tore my emotions into pieces and made my heart go out to the pain and terror he lived through. He was delirious from shock treatment received via a collar and couldn't sense Miriam close by. The event leaves Miriam distorted, trying to solve the mystery and find her other half (Black). And again, there is so much to this story that I'm not willing to tell so get it you definitely won't be disappointed because it leaves you wanting to read the next and the next and the next book.

Dark and stunning supernatural world
Quentin Black and his new mate Miri travel to L.A. to help investigate a murder and possible conspiracy, eventually ending in more kills according to the leads. But the whole arrangement is a trap and Black, who was supposed to stay out of the main action, is suddenly in its center, kidnapped and exposed to extreme conditions. He must suffer through much, being only a pawn in a game full of intrigues, revealing that their world inhabits more supernatural races than he knew about..
Awesome story, developing enormously with each chapter, provides a catching plot with many twists and surprises, packed with action and wide range of emotions. Characters are complex, strong, highly loveable and attracting reader´s interest. I love the detailed world and the much subtle information dropped in the storming situations one might easily overlook but still perceive. Very well-balanced and fast pacing.
I really appreciate the opportunity to read the ARC in exchange for my review and strongly recommend the book even if you haven´t read the previous ones.

This was my first book from this author. I struggled not knowing the back ground of Black's history so I would seriously recommend you reading the rest first.

Miri and Quentin are just getting used to their mating bond and life seemed to be settling down until he is offered a consulting job for the LAPD. It's supposed to be a just research until they decide they need him at the scene but staying in the car. The scene quickly descends to chaos and Black is drugged and kidnapped.

He wakes up with no way to use his 'sight' as he has a collar round his neck similar to ones from his world. He has no way of communication with Miri or his allies, and Miri ends up turning to her uncle for help.

It did take me quite a while to get into this book but I think that maybe a i hadn't read the other books in the series. I will now be going back to read the rest.

Wow! I have practically no words. I am in total awe of Andrijeski's writing talent. First, a word of warning: this is not a "pretty" story. It's at times harsh and brutal. But it's beautifully written and there's a ribbon of hope and another of love that wind through and keep it from being as dark as this could have gone. I read this book out of order for the series and it's very successful as a stand-alone but there are some references to events in previous books that I'm going to have to go back and read about. The pace is quick and the plot has so many unexpected twists, you won't want to put it down. I was upset that my 9-5 job kept getting in the way of my reading time. I was so caught up in the story I wanted to finish it in one sitting. I'm hooked on Miri and Quentin and can't wait to read everything about them.

I received an ARC for my honest review... The Quentin Black series has become one of my favorites series since I fell in love with book one, however I think this one is my favorite out of them all! I will admit I am always looking forward to what is gonna be happening next in each book, though I was shocked by what exactly the enemy is in this one. JC did an awesome job creating this enemy. I think I might have screamed at my tablet just a little for all that went on with Black. I felt like I was gutted a little. Miri made me love her more than ever with her determination to get him back at her side.. How she tries to make him in the better in the end is what did me in though. I needed just a little while to be able to digest it all to leave my review. If you love twists with the supernatural mystery ways I would recommend this book ( series start with book 1) to you!!
JC you create some wickedly amazing stories I can't wait to find out what happens next!

If you liked the movies Rocky, you will like these

I enjoyed the series up till book 4. I skimmed through book 5 trying to find more information on Miriam. The author is good about giving information concerning the seer race, but very vague on what differences there are being a half breed. I felt the lack of development in that area to be disappointing. I also got quite tired of the main character constantly getting beat up,tortured and struggling to hang on while he waits for her to call in the back up to save him. The character of Miriam was lacking in ability considering all the training she had between the military and martial arts. In fact for someone in her profession I feel she should have been able to understand Black quicker and better than she did. I won't be reading anymore by this author. She is a good author but there are too many unanswered questions as well as repetitive themes.

Dark.Dark.Dark.

This could have been a good story, but the gratuitous rape, and beatings ruined it. This is not the work of a good story teller. If you like your stories sick, explicitly so, then this is for you. If you like good world building, character development and interesting, clever plots, pass this series up. I had to take shower when I was finished, I felt violated. The Black series is the first I have read of JC Andrijeski. Black N White peaked my interest. After reading the most gruesome details of Miriam's rape in book 2, I should have realized writing a good story is not something this author is capable of. I will not read any more of her indulgences, and feel others should be warned in greater detail about the content. Ms Andrijeski is probably capable of being an excellent author, but utterly fails with this series.

5 Stars

Black and blue is the fifth book in the Quentin Black Mystery series by J.C. Andrijeski. WHY? WHY? WHY? Have I not discovered this author before now? I have seriously been missing out on some stellar reads, and that is something I plan to remedy starting immediately. This turned out to be quite the epic book binge- and I enjoyed every single second- even if the author constantly had my heart in my mouth, or had me pulling my hair out in frustration, or seemed to delight in toying with my emotions pretty much the entire time- I willingly went back for more each and every time. Sixteen books in and I can’t wait for more!!!
Seriously, this series truly is a MUST-READ, especially for anyone who loves really original paranormal mysteries with incredible world-building and scene setting. If you love immersive reads, then this is definitely the series for you!
But be warned, this isn’t a ‘light and fluffy’ cozy paranormal mystery- this has plenty of gritty, raw, violent, emotive, and a ‘hang on to your seat’ and brace yourselves because this is going to get INTENSE situations. There are potential triggers contained through the series- such as violence, murder, abuse, sexual abuse, manipulation, graphic language and more. So keep that in mind if you are sensitive to any of those subjects.
I stumbled on this series purely by accident, and this is another fortuitous find of late, because not only was I hooked on the story within the first few pages and practically inhaled the entire series back-to-back…. it is also turned out to be entirely addictive reading, with Ms. Andrijeski’s stellar storytelling talents, her clever and intriguing touches, the many well-developed and interesting characters, the brilliant ‘world’ creation, and all the other rich layers and ‘flavours’ she poured into her pages, made the real world fade away as I was swept along on adventure after adventure.
J.C. Andrijeski’s world building skills are sheer perfection, putting me front and centre to all the action-packed developments in this immersive, captivating, and addictive book/series. I am so hooked on her work now and will happily devour anything she ever produces- so I see plenty of book binges in my future.
This is a heart-stopping, action-packed, intense, mystery with tension, intrigue, seers, vampires, chemistry, sizzle, science fiction, crime, investigation, deadly games of cat and mouse, murder, violence drama, danger, friendship, politics, agendas, and so much more that I won’t get into here because I really don’t want to spoil it for you.
Ms. Andrijeski has a bold, dynamic, and very vivid writing style that easily brings her story to life- it was like watching a movie play out before my eyes, The descriptions are quite detailed and painted a powerful picture- I really could see this making a fantastic movie or television series.
Highly Recommended Reading!!!
Happy Reading…

Thank you, J.C. Andrijeski!

Condition Black

When Black is taken it is the start of a living nightmare for Miri. Discovering that the seers have an even deadlier enemy than humans is bad. But finding out that she can no longer feel or hear him is worse. For the first time she is in charge. To save him she will have to put everything on the line.

A living nightmare forces Black to face a past he has tried to forget. But with his seer abilities blocked he must use old skills to stay alive. Facing torture that would break a normal man. Struggling to stay strong and fight against giving in to condition black. With only his inner strength to rely on. Black will need a miracle to survive. Or maybe he just needs his wife.

This was a fascinating walk through Black's mind and the scars left by his past. Combined with scenes of extreme violence that due to my affection for Black made my skin crawl. A new enemy who could be the death of them all. And cracks in our heroes relationship. I'm off to listen (text to speech) to the next in the series. It would be nice if our couple get a break but I doubt it.

Triggers!!

This book is difficult for me to review. Normally I review books within 10 to 15 minutes of reading them, but it's been more than a day for this one. Quentin gets abducted, and while he's apart from Miriam, he gets raped repeatedly. Miriam got raped in book 2, and Quentin in book 3, but this one seems worse because now they're bonded. Along with all the beatings and other violence, this was a really hard book for me to read. I'll probably read one more book to see if the author can get away from rape, and if she can't, no matter how much I love these characters, I'll probably stop. These are really dark stories.

Not a stand alone book.

Contains sex scenes (including rape), swear words (mostly the F word and the Lord's name in vain), and violence (beatings, torture, kidnap, death, shootings, medical experimentation).

Wow... Intense!

This book was packed with non -stop action and drama. From the beginning to end it did not stop. The only complaint I had was the intense sexual abuse and then how it was handled. I went from book to book... and really did not expect that and wish I had some warning. There are some funny moments that suppose to help you digest it, but I really and truly hope people do not minimize the magnitude of this. I am very much aware of this being fiction, but when your not warned, it could be triggering and insensitive.
The overall premise of the story was good, I just wish they could have found a better way to torture.
I could give less stars for the abuse, but I don't think that would be fair, as that is only my opinion and the story is good and action filled.

Love this series!

I read all the books before this one about a year ago, and took a break from the series before I read book 5. Well I just finished it, and I'm so glad I did!! Definetely one of the darker books in the series, but super good I wish I had more of the other characters! Especially some of their deaths lol! The only reason I dint give it a full 5 stars was because even though I love this series, I feel like every book, or every other book in this series, Miriam and Black are seperated for sooooo long. Im fine with some seperation, but not in every book in the series. But would still recommend this series, and starting on the next one now!

All I can say is what a ride. This seer world is riddled with so much action, intrigue, and urgency that I've come to count on in JC Andrijeski's books.

In this story there was a literal bomb that dropped that it took my mind a minute to catch up to what my eyes just read. I didn't expect it one bit, but man did it work and made the story that much more robust.

One of my favorite parts of these stories in the interaction between Miri and Black. The two of them together are explosive and getting to follow along to see how they navigate the waters of their new bond and getting to know each other is great. This story sadly didn't have as much of them together as I've become accustomed too, but more of the fight to get back to each other.

I did feel a little bit like I was hanging there at the end wanting to read more about their reunion and how they worked through more of their issues, but I expect to see that in the novella and throughout the rest of the series so here's hoping.

As per usual, the writing is well done. This seer world is so fascinating and descriptive that I can't help but consume them to find out more, so on to the next adventure.

Only 3 Stars 🌟

I found the 'baddies' in this to be as ridiculous as the characters did! I'm not saying they aren't scary, lethal etc it just felt ridiculous & actually weird to add them into this story arc 😳👎

The abuse Quentin suffers in this book felt like too much to me. I know he goes off the deep end in the next book but it almost felt like abuse to my eyes & brain reading it too!!😡😢

This is action-packed, has unexpected twists and is dark. There is also a thread of love that keeps hope alive in the darkest places and willing to set the world on fire. Andrijeski writes well. She has created a rich world that she keeps fresh with surprises that I did not see coming; they also do not seem forced but an organic element that meshes well with the rest of the world she has created.

Interestingly, this book lost me almost immediately. I hate the position black is in and the immediate vulnerability turned me off - after reading the reviews I am so grateful as it seems this theme continued throughout the book with his rape and abuse. I also absolutely loathe the 24 hours earlier thing. When a character I have come to care for is in such a bad position I just want to skim the entire book until it’s fixed. Like cmon

This is the second book about Quentin Black and Miri that I've read, and as much as I liked Black In White, I just could not get into Black And Blue. Too much violence and sex, and the constant repetition of the "F"-word, as well as not much of a mystery prevented me from enjoying this book.

It was a bit much. 2.5⭐️

I’m not going to say what, because I don’t do spoilers, but the sheer amount of it really, really took most of the enjoyment out of this book. If I hadn’t enjoyed these characters so much to this point I’m not sure I’d have finished it continued with the series.

An un/natural sadness

By far, this is the most emotionally gut wrenching book of the series so far. The severe atrocities, brutality and abuse heaped upon the gorgeous hero is exquisitely painful. At the end, I am left with sadness for him and Miri. Really good read and I'm hooked.
