Just finished this book with my third graders. They did enjoy it; in particular, there were illustrations on each page, even though it was a chapter book. This helped my readers understand the characters better and we discussed what "bad guys" might look like in children's literature with narrow eye brows.
Read aloud to the preschooler over several days. It kept her attention and she liked it. A canine PI and his pack of detecting helpers go after a stolen statue.
“Rider Woofson: The Case of the Missing Tiger’s Eye” is an early reader chapter book for students aged 5 - 9.
The story is about Rider Woofson, a dog detective in the town of Pawston, who solves crimes with the help of his pack; he uses the gadgets of Westie Barker, the nose of Ziggy Fluffenscruff, and the help of Rora Gooddog, a smart and pretty sleuth. The book follows the pack as they use clues to determine who stole a valuable sculpture called the Tiger’s Eye.
The book is accessible to early readers with its large font, and cartoonish illustrations on almost every page. Many students will enjoy reading about the pack following clues to solve the mystery, as well as the corny puns throughout the book; the pack faces “terrier-fying” challenges, eats “pupperoni pizza,” and deals with a “hiss-terical cat” as they navigate the city’s criminal underbelly, which is “not the type of belly you want to scratch…unless you want to get bit!”
One drawback of this book is that it has a one-dimensional, arguably stereotypical portrayal of the only female member of the team, who is described as “pretty” and doesn’t contribute substantially to solving the crime.
This book will appeal to early readers of chapter books in many ways, and students will enjoy making predictions and following the team as they use clues to solve the crime. However, later books in the series should include more strong female characters to avoid stereotypes and to engage young female readers, as well.
Rider Woofson and the rest of the Pup Investigators Pack is on the case! An expensive statue of a tiger with gemstone eyes has been stolen from the Cat's Meow jewelry store where it was going on display for people to see. None of the doors was unlocked, but the statue disappeared and the night watchman saw a giant shadow. The P.I. Pack must collect the clues and recover the statue.
This is a decent mystery for the lower grade audience. The P.I. Pack are an entertaining group of canines. I really had to suspend belief about the cause of the giant shadow. On the whole, this is an entertaining mystery I'm sure the target audience will like.
Dog detectives to the rescue! This book was mysterious, laughter provoking and all about animals. I appreciated how this book not only walked the reader through the story, and kept the reader guessing about who the culprit was, but this book provided illustrations to go along with it! I would absolutely recommend this book to young readers who like reading about mysteries and animals.
Dog lover? Mystery fan? Both? This book is the perfect book for your 2nd/3rd grade reader, or your advanced 1st grader. Full of dog puns and a fun mystery. I really enjoyed it and I think your kiddo will, too.
Standard mystery to solve, animal characters, dog and cat puns, and illustrations. Nothing special, but kids who like animal characters or simple mysteries might enjoy it.
Rider Woofson and the Pi Pack are on the case of a missing statue called the Tiger's Eye. A beginning chapter book this will delight novice readers and is filled with inside animal jokes.
