Sweet Talkin' Stranger

Rate this book
HE CALLED HER A SCHEMING LITTLE MINX... — Patience McCord's lies and sweet talk had forced handsome Cass Claxton into a shotgun wedding before he left her Kansas town. Judge McCord's beautiful daughter had vowed she'd do anything to get to St. Louis -- even if it meant tricking the bold, brawny frontiersman into marrying her. — Once in St. Louis, Patience never intended to see Cass again. She never dreamed that six years later she'd be stuck in a Conestoga wagon with nine frightened orphans and using another desperate trick to get Cass to take them through Indian country. He called her a hellcat and a schemer, but this time their hot tempers ignited desire's burning flame. Now she wanted him to tame her, teach her, love her... if her lies hadn't made it too late to win his heart.

Lori Copeland was born on 12 June 1941. She had a relatively late start in writing, breaking into publishing in 1982 when she was already forty years old. I originally read this book (bought used) in the 90s, and of course had it in paperback. I loved the covers and remembered loving the books, so I kept them when pruning books for a move, but hadn’t reread them since.

I was looking for a scene I remembered from some western for someone on Reddit, and thought it might be in here, so gave it a reread/skim. Alas, the scene was not in here.

This book is full of head-hopping and POVs that aren’t the two main characters, as was more common at the time it was published.

Patience was a character to try anyone’s patience, at least at the start. Unfortunately, the book skipped over the years of her developing out of being a brat - we just jump into her POV years later and forced to catch up with here character growth, though actually, it wasn’t as bad as I am probably making it out to be. We see her originally as a petty spoiled brat princess, who manipulates everyone around her when she won’t get her way, up to and including forcing the hero to marry her at shotgun-point. They go their separate ways not long after that, and only come together after each has grown a bit. Though Patience is supposed to have grown less manipulative and selfish, she reverts to her old ways to get Cass to help her, which goes against her supposedly having changed. It is only at the end of the book do we really see her changed in regard to Cass, after he’s left her for a year.

I still like the covers tho, so I won’t be getting rid of them!

SUCH A GREAT BOOK. So amazing. A MUST READ if you can find it. This is a series about 3 brothers (3 books) Lori Copeland cleaned them up and made them more christain books but I think they lost some of the appeal when she changed them. These book in this series are hard to find but well worth the read.

1869, was the year that Patience was going to do anything to get away from her little Kansas town. Cass was her only option. Before he knew what happened he was escorting Patience to St. Louis.

Once they got to St. Louis they parted ways, Cass hoping never to see Patience ever again. Unfortunately six years later Patience has to deal with Cass again. Patience was left in charge of nine orphaned children and had to return to Kansas city. Cass was not thrilled to see Patience again and tried everything to stay away from her or so he thought. Yet again before Cass could blink he was leading Patience and the orphans back across the trails to Kansas. He soon realizes that Patience has some magical hold over him.

This is a great read, taking you back in time.

I was a little put off by the cover (the one from the library didn't have a cover!) but I was pleasantly surprised and I really enjoyed this book!
