Book 2 of the bestselling first contact series! The crew is at breaking point. Bearing Earth's hopes for deliverance from the alien threat, Jack Kildare and his fellow astronauts successfully complete the long journey to Jupiter. But someone on board is trying to sabotage the mission. As they approach the mysterious alien spaceship orbiting Europa, the crew fractures into rival factions. Without warning, a long-range attack cripples the human ship. Now the broken crew is the least of Jack's worries. The alien spaceship isn't a wreck, after all. And whoever is on board wants the humans dead. As the mission unravels into a desperate fight for survival, Jack struggles to decode the enemy plot. If he fails, the astronauts will all perish ... and so will Earth.

You'll love Lifeboat because it's a a scarily plausible first contact thriller blending hard science fiction and edge-of-your seat action. You won't need a calculator to follow the story, but if you'd like to build a spaceship to the Spirit of Destiny's specifications, it really will take you to Jupiter! Felix R. Savage writes hard science fiction, space opera, and comedic science fiction. He has also occasionally been known to commit fantasy.

Felix has a long history associated with rebellion. He was born in the 1970s, a decade of American youth rebelling against the safe culture of their parents. He is married to a wonderful woman and they have two beautiful daughters. Together the four of them live in Tokyo serving their cat overlord and benevolent protector. Felix pounds the keyboard while not translating, delighting in his family, or catering to the whims of the family’s cat. He woke up one day to learn that he was a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author, but he continues to keep a low profile, and never stops watching out for any sign the lizard people have found him.

I really enjoyed this book. It's the second in the Earth's Last Gambit series and is described as a First Contact Technothriller. The first book in this trilogy is FreeFall and the third book will be called Shiplord, and when it's released, I'll definitely be purchasing it.

If I have my druthers, my preferred genre is science fiction, present day, hard science, first contact, so this series is exactly what I prefer. You can read this book as a standalone, but it's better to initially read FreeFall to understand and appreciate the characters in Lifeboat. FreeFall is a definite setup for the second book.

Tons of character development in this book, and really well done with attention to the smallest details, down to each persons little quirks and how they smell, along with the many problems associated with traveling in space for several years in tight quarters. It doesn't take itself too serious either, there's lots of humour, and even some sexual tension between the astronauts. It's a page turner for sure.

It's hard to say much about this book without introducing spoilers, so I'll just give it 5 stars and leave it at that.

There is hope for humanity yet! This book had me at the edge of my seat, and yes, we get to see aliens! The science discussions in this book were very interesting. Time for humanity to come to its senses.

Whoa. Creative author. Kept his continuity with characters within a complex plot. Have to admit, the only feature I liked about the aliens was their capability of healing. Otherwise I found them gross and violent, although the author suggests the violence was what they learned from TV. Just think, we don't need aliens to mimic TV; we already have children of all ages. Scary. Even though my first novel ONLY CHILD? is quite tame, I will still ask Mr. Savage to find some time to ready my book and write a review. My book suggests how technology can be used to bring people, especially family, together.

"No more good little soldier boys."
Travel with Jack 'Killer' Kildare, Skyler, Alexei and the other crew members of The Spirit of Destiny as they travel through space to investigate what appears to be a derelict alien craft circling one of the moon's of Saturn. The journey is a long one and, even if their craft had been built with the cooperation of the world's nations, below the surface personal allegiances further disturb the uneasy trust that living together so closely in a small enclosed environment brings.to their relationships.

Felix Savage is a remarkable writer of considerable talent. Not only does the story flows well and is a pleasure to read, it is exciting, and frequently unexpected. The science is there but lightly touched upon so that it doesn't distract the reader from the action and there are more mundane but brilliant touches like the smells that accumulate in a sealed environment where personal hygiene can be problematic. And the problem of flies ... These imaginative extras, combined with deft characterisations and dialogue, give a reality to everything often missing in other books. And it can be funny, too, at times.

This is the second in the Earth's Last Gambit trilogy and, although it could be read alone, is better with the background knowledge of the previous book. The last in the series, Shiplord, is still to be published and I'm really looking forward to reading it to discover the fates of the characters who have become so much more than simple ciphers on a page. My deep thanks to the author for gifting me a pre publication copy of his book. I loved it.

Second reading, this time with the audio edition, and it was as good as first time around. Narrator Makes Andersen Foster is excellent: great pace and pleasant on the ear. A good choice for SF fans.

A JOURNEY TO EUROPA HAS DANGER, UNCERTAINTY, & COMPLICATIONS
Four and a half AUDACIOUS Stars. “Lifeboat: Earth’s Last Gambit, Volume 2)” is a wild, relentless, entertaining tale created by talented author Felix R. Savage. He again cites the assistance of scientist Bill Patterson in the foreword. He has, as in Volume 1, created an wide-ranging tale that is a mixture of Sci/Fi adventure and melodrama, which is full of abrupt twists and turns on Earth and in space. The main plot concerns incidents revolving around the discovery of an alien object orbiting the Jovian moon, Europa. People on Earth are both stunned and captivated. Now the trip to Europa aboard the "Spirit of Discovery" has begun and things get turbulent. This page-turner of a novel has scientific discovery, politics, surprise maneuvers, suspicions, deceit, death, and much more. Author Savage continues to develop the already deeply-etched and flawed characters who are caught up in the mystery and machinations of travel to the alien object. This is a tumultuous ride that hopscotches among many locations, leading up to the third novel in the series, “Shiplord: A First Contact Technothriller (Earth's Last Gambit Book 3)” which I purchased while still reading this novel. Some suspension of belief is required at times. Things do get ‘demented’, especially concerning some favorite characters, which may disappoint some readers. This novel ends on a cliff hanger. Reading the first novel is necessary to fully understand the circumstances and the interrelation of characters. Highly Recommended. Four and a half MERCILESS Stars. (Knights Hill Publishing. 426 pages in Kindle. Text-to-Speech, X-Ray, Word Wise, Lending, Screen Reader, Enhanced Typesetting and Audible are enabled/supported.)

I've read the series and really enjoyed it. I didn't think twice about buying second book - "Lifeboat."

"After two years aboard the Spirit of Destiny, tensions among the elite international crew are at breaking point. Despite the obvious need to stay professional and united, as they approach the mysterious alien spaceship orbiting Europa, pilot Jack Kildare is acutely aware that not all the members of the crew may wish the best for the mission. There may be a saboteur on board, and he knows of at least one spy: the astrophysicist Skyler Taft.

An attack from long-range alien weaponry cripples the Spirit of Destiny, forcing Jack to disobey orders to save the ship. Now he has to face the fact that the broken crew is the least of his worries. With the risky maneuver that saved the ship putting him dead center of the commander's crosshairs, and the crew attempting to hold together the tattered remnants of their unity to investigate the alien spaceship, Jack finds himself selected for the most dangerous mission of all... descending to Europa's surface to find out what lurks under the ice.

As the voyage of discovery unravels into a desperate battle for survival, Jack races the clock to decode the secrets behind the alien intrusion. Will he find the truth in time to save the crew? Or will the thin threads of companionship snap under the strain of Skyler Taft gunning for his knowledge… or his blood?"

This is a good solid space opera. Can't wait to read the third installment!

I received an ARC of this book from the author. This is my voluntary and independent review. Lifeboat is the second installment of Felix R. Savage's series, Earth's Last Gambit. Billed as a techno-thriller, this book totally lives up to its billing. Reading it left me breathless. Every chapter brings a new twist, a new dilemma, a new challenge to the crew of Spirit of Discovery as they attempt to carry out their first contact mission to the alien craft orbiting Europa. Two years into the mission, and nobody knows who the saboteur aboard SoD is, nobody knows exactly what their real mission is, and nobody is prepared for what transpires when they reach Europa and make first contact with the MOAD (Mother of All Discoveries). In this atmosphere of distrust, "All for one and one for all" soon morphs into "Every man for himself." By the end of the novel, all who remain standing can agree on the new goal: survival. Mr. Savage has mad writing skills. He blends knowledge of science and technology with inspired imagination and cinematic description, then overlays all that with an uncanny insight into the emotions and beliefs that drive his characters. The result is a perfect storm of suspense, action, and heroics that kept me on the edge of my seat right up to the end. I can't wait to read the next book!

Book one, Freefall, focused on the trials and tribulations of Kildare and the crew of the Spirit of Destiny on their way to Europa. I liked the political intrigue and the “real world” ramifications to such a discovery. Lifeboat is all spacefaring adventure. I might even say that Lifeboat is a more likable story than Freefall for a majority of sci-fi readers. Personally, I found the intrigue from Freefall made Lifeboat so satisfying.

I’d still classify this series as “hard” sci-fi, but it’s hard in a way that it addresses things that most “soft” sci-fi doesn’t namely, hygiene, and other little details that obviously had a lot of research performed to get the nuances right. The crew of misfits is so perfect, it reminds me so much of the interactions between the cast in Firefly.

I rated Freefall five stars, and I’m happy to say that Lifeboat is even better. Since I can’t rate it above five stars, I’ll have to settle for only five stars for Lifeboat too.

LIFEBOAT seamlessly picks up where FREEFALL left off. Jack and a crew aboard the Spirit Of Destiny make their way back to Europa. After being on the ship for a long time, Jack discovers not everyone on board, or their respective countries, want the same thing -- making first contact has a whole new meaning. But then the ship is attacked from the alien aircraft, and the Spirit Of Destiny crashes to Europa's icy surface. Jack's hopes of meeting a new species with a welcome from Earth doesn't happen. The craft attacked them with no provocation. Now that the Spriti Of Destiny has crashed in a hostile environment, all bets are off. This is another page turner from Savage, I guarantee you'll want to read this second book in the series.

You watch too much television!

The aliens are so human but then they nothing remotely like us! Terrific, funny dialogue. Lots of technology explained and fantasized, space battles, DIY guides for space trip road repairs, and just good old-fashioned boy meets alien meets girl! Fusion and fission!

Winner of the Best Space Crew ever! How this gang of misfits work, fight and spy on each other while on the two year road to First Contact was good but once they meet the new neighbors, and discover the ten year in-house civil war plus the aliens plans for Earth - all hell breaks loose!

This book is awesome!

I'm going to find it a little difficult to write a review without any spoilers. So, ill just say that this book was amazingly good. Fantastic in fact. Heroes abound in many different ways. Emotions run high and a lot of stuff happens that is shocking. Forgiveness rules the day while the crew works together to save themselves and Earth. This is a must read.

Going to start book 3 right now....

Book 1 was so good I couldn't wait to get started reading this one. The non-stop action and unforgettable characters will keep you reading just one more character until you have finished the book. I had that problem and still do because I want to know what will happen next.
I would recommend these books to anyone who likes action packed space syfi.

So the first book was great a good hard scifi novel. This one gets a little wonky....

I love aliens as much as the next guy but it just seems to have really come out of no where. (not that it is anything like this but its almost like they met Casper the Friendly Ghost) but in this one its Keelraiser. The aliens and MOAD are still driving the story and its good enough for me to keep going and immediately start reading the next I just hope that it stays at a 3 star level......

Great read

As with the firstly book, this is very well written with an eye for both cast and story. The Aliens have been well thought out, as have the problems both races face in the vast areas of space. Cannot wait to read book three when it comes out. Well done Felix on a cracking good read, and thank you for the hours of enjoyment.

Great Read

This is a fun series and very current - connected to what has been happening in exploration of Jupiter and its moons in 2016. I think this series is a good exercise in one possible way a first contact could go. Very enjoyable read.

Sorry...
First part was OK, nice to read... but this one?
Well - do you really think aliens thinks exactly the same way US people do? Huh... there are even more differences between Europe and US than between aliens and humans in this book..

Fast paced and impossible to put

This book was fast pace and impossible to put down. The science behind the science fiction is so clearly described, but you get the feeling that it's possible. Very enjoyable book, with twists and turns that you will not see coming.

This book started great and it went downhill to end in an interesting way

I liked all the description and drama aboard the SoD almost 3 years in the trip. The first encounter while interesting and made sense honestly it was the most anti climatic part, specially all the description of Jack and Alexei inside the shelter, at the end we see some really interesting action and technological descriptions. Something that annoyed me it was the fact that supposedly the Aliens and humans we have the same name to describe hard science phenomena, even if the aliens have learned from us through our radio signals and tv, is a lot of that is never shared that way. Anyway looking forward to read Shiplord and see what happens to Jack, Alexei and dumb boy Skyler as well what is going to happen to Hannah banana

Very good story

This was better than the first book and I really liked the first. The characters are more alive and the miscommunication within and between species, the betrayals and secrets are awesome.

The action is so seamlessly woven into each characters circumstances that the action doesn't stand out as a break in the story. The tech is very cool and the comparison between human and alien tech adds depth to the background. The plot has a lot of surprises and I expect many more in the series.

For me, it was nice writing backing up a strange but good story. Ready to read the next book.

I just basically dislike the author's writing style. The story line was OK but his presentation, in my opinion, left a lot to be desired for a good read. There were some things that were just not believable. Like astronauts from the Earth meeting aliens and immediately being able to talk to them. And these same people moving from one spaceship to another and to a ground station without much regard to being able to breath oxygen and keep from freezing. I also found it unbelievable that a crew could pretty much turn on each other.

I think there are two more books in this series but I will not be reading them. I pretty much just skimmed through the last half of this book.

An FRS. SYFY. Novel (ELGB - 2)/Arrival/Aliens/Are They Dangerous or Lost in Spacs

FRS. has. penned the second novel in the Earth's Last Gambit series, which has the crew of the human ship facing many periods reroute to Jupitor's Moon. They lose two to equipment malfunctions and when they final!y arrive near the suspected alien space craft there are five members of the original crew left to complete the mission. They survey the alleged abandoned space craft only to discover it contained alien beings. This is an ex silent read for the genre.....DEHS

And so we get cooking!

After the first in the series I expected a slower start for this one but no! All kinds of events go on in Lifeboat! Relationships, unexpected discoveries on Europa and the alien vessel...and some real space action! It’s hard to review without giving things away so I’ll just say here that in this second book of the series sh#t gets real! Now, I’m off to get the next one!

Part two of this series.

The ship on its way gets to Europa and what do you know they're like us. Well not physically but they're in factions fighting each other and their ship is damaged/crippled due to infighting on the way to conquer Earth.

Now along come humans providing a means to fix their ship and continue the trip to conquer Earth.

This middle instalment of the series is just as good as the first, and gives me high hopes for the finale. I won't write any spoilers, but suffices to say this has hard science, action, and more than a touch of comedy that had me smiling the whole way through.

I quit the book 20-25% in. There wasn't enough action or suspense, or something. I wasn't that interested in the characters, and their continuing issues. I kind of wanted them to get to the alien ship, but felt compelled to move on to a more interesting novel. Any more interesting novel.

Somewhat predictable

Good follow-on to the first book. The Russian in the story is almost right in his "everybody dies" scenario. Ignore the aliens firm grasp of slang, curses, etc and it reads more comfortably.

This one had a lot more action and kept me more entertained than the previous. Some parts were still hard to follow and I felt there were a few things that were left unexplained with no way of explaining in the next book, or maybe that was just me.

Mediocre... but with Aliens!

This Book #2 is definitely better than Book #1, but it’s not all that good. The finger-pointing and double-crossing (amongst ALL of the characters) is boring and needless to the story, except to add pages and confusion.
