49 books83 followersMahadevi Verma (26 March 1907 – 11 September 1987), also spelled Mahadevi Varma in her English collections, was best known as an outstanding Hindi poet, and was a freedom fighter, woman's activist and educationist from India. She is widely regarded as the "modern Meera".[1] She was a major poet of the Chhayavaad generation, a period of romanticism in Modern Hindi poetry ranging from 1914–1938.[2] With the passage of time, her limited but outstanding prose has been recognised as unique in Hindi literature. She was a prominent poet in Hindi Kavi sammelans (Gatherings of poets).
She was the Principal, and then the Vice-Chancellor of Prayag Mahila Vidyapeeth, a woman's residential college in Allahabad. She was awarded India's highest literary award, for lifetime achievement, the Sahitya Akademi Fellowship in 1979, followed by the Jnanpith Award in 1982.[3] She was the recipient of the Padma Bhushan in 1956[4] and the Padma Vibhushan in 1988, India's third and second highest civilian awards respectively.

महादेवी वर्मा (२६ मार्च १९०७ — ११ सितंबर १९८७) हिन्दी की सर्वाधिक प्रतिभावान कवयित्रियों में से हैं। वे हिन्दी साहित्य में छायावादी युग के चार प्रमुख स्तंभों[क] में से एक मानी जाती हैं।[1] आधुनिक हिन्दी की सबसे सशक्त कवयित्रियों में से एक होने के कारण उन्हें आधुनिक मीरा के नाम से भी जाना जाता है।[2] कवि निराला ने उन्हें “हिन्दी के विशाल मन्दिर की सरस्वती” भी कहा है।[ख] महादेवी ने स्वतंत्रता के पहले का भारत भी देखा और उसके बाद का भी। वे उन कवियों में से एक हैं जिन्होंने व्यापक समाज में काम करते हुए भारत के भीतर विद्यमान हाहाकार, रुदन को देखा, परखा और करुण होकर अन्धकार को दूर करने वाली दृष्टि देने की कोशिश की।[3] न केवल उनका काव्य बल्कि उनके सामाजसुधार के कार्य और महिलाओं के प्रति चेतना भावना भी इस दृष्टि से प्रभावित रहे। उन्होंने मन की पीड़ा को इतने स्नेह और शृंगार से सजाया कि दीपशिखा में वह जन-जन की पीड़ा के रूप में स्थापित हुई और उसने केवल पाठकों को ही नहीं समीक्षकों को भी गहराई तक प्रभावित किया।[ग]
उन्होंने खड़ी बोली हिन्दी की कविता में उस कोमल शब्दावली का विकास किया जो अभी तक केवल बृजभाषा में ही संभव मानी जाती थी। इसके लिए उन्होंने अपने समय के अनुकूल संस्कृत और बांग्ला के कोमल शब्दों को चुनकर हिन्दी का जामा पहनाया। संगीत की जानकार होने के कारण उनके गीतों का नाद-सौंदर्य और पैनी उक्तियों की व्यंजना शैली अन्यत्र दुर्लभ है। उन्होंने अध्यापन से अपने कार्यजीवन की शुरूआत की और अंतिम समय तक वे प्रयाग महिला विद्यापीठ की प्रधानाचार्या बनी रहीं। उनका बाल-विवाह हुआ परंतु उन्होंने अविवाहित की भांति जीवन-यापन किया। प्रतिभावान कवयित्री और गद्य लेखिका महादेवी वर्मा साहित्य और संगीत में निपुण होने के साथ-साथ[4] कुशल चित्रकार और सृजनात्मक अनुवादक भी थीं। उन्हें हिन्दी साहित्य के सभी महत्त्वपूर्ण पुरस्कार प्राप्त करने का गौरव प्राप्त है। भारत के साहित्य आकाश में महादेवी वर्मा का नाम ध्रुव तारे की भांति प्रकाशमान है। गत शताब्दी की सर्वाधिक लोकप्रिय महिला साहित्यकार के रूप में वे जीवन भर पूजनीय बनी रहीं।[5] वर्ष २००७ उनकी जन्म शताब्दी के रूप में मनाया गया।

"शून्य मेरा जन्म था
अवसान है मुझको सवेरा;
प्राण आकुल के लिए
संगी मिला केवल अँधेरा;
मिलन का मत नाम ले मैं विरह में चिर हूँ!"
मैं, महादेवी वर्मा जी, जो कि भारतीय साहित्य की सर्वश्रेष्ठ एवं सकुशल कवयित्रियों में से एक हैं, के पद्य मुखयतः समझने योग्य पूर्णतः काबिल नहीं हूँ, यह मानता हूँ! एक पल को लगा भावाव्यक्ति न ही की जाये; लेकिन इतनी उत्कृष्ट हिंदी के पूर्णतः न समझ आने के बावजूद इन कविताओं का भाव एवं सार समझ आया। शायद यही काव्य की सुंदरता होती है?
यामा, जिसका अर्थ होता है निशा, 63 कविताओं का संग्रहण है, जिसके लिए महादेवी जी सन् 1982 में ज्ञानपीठ पुरस्कार से सुसज्जित की गईं। यामा चार विषयवस्तुओं में वर्गीकृत है -
1. नीहार (कोहरा) - रात्रि, तम की तरह उदासीन लेखन है, जिसमें मृत्यु एवं दुःख का भाव दर्शित है।
2. रश्मि - धूप एवं छाँव की आँखमिचौली की तरह विविध दुविधाएँ एवं सवाल हैं।
3. नीरजा (कमल) - कमल की भांति सुन्दरता एवं प्रेम पूर्ण लेखन है।
4. सान्ध्य गीत - साँझ की तरह विरह, अंत एवं वियोग का भाव है।
हर कविता का विषय अलग है, और फिर भी उनका मेल इन चार विषयवस्तुओं में होता है, जो कि दिन के समयकाल की तरह दर्शित मानी जा सकती हैं। काबिलेतारीफ लेखन है। मेरे अचरज की सीमा नहीं रही जब पढ़ा कि प्रथम 'यामः' (काल) - नीहार - महादेवी जी ने आठवीं कक्षा में लिखा था!! और तब मैं क्या कर रहा था? WWE के टैटू इकट्ठे!
इन कविताओं का सार एवं भाव बेहतर समझने के लिए मैं इन्हें ज़रूर दोबारा पढ़ूँगा। तब तक के लिये -

I am NOT capable enough to properly comprehend Mrs. Mahadevi's poetry. Hence I questioned myself, should I even review it? And despite such challenging Hindi, I was able to grasp its sense and summary. Perhaps that is the beauty of poetry?
Yama, which means night, is a collection of 63 poems, for which Mahadevi Verma was given Gyanpeeth Award in the year 1982. Yama's poems are categorized into -
1. Neehar (fog) - It's has a gloomy writing style, just like night or darkness, suitable to the theme. It deals with melancholy, sadness and even death at places.
2. Rashmi (sunlight) - Various questions and doubts can be seen akin to the hide and seek game between sunlight and shade.
3. Neerja (lotus) - Just like a lotus, the writing is beautiful, vibrant and full of love.
4. Saandhya geet (evening song) - Like an evening, this has a sense of ending and separation.
Every poem is unique in its theme, and yet they come together in the form of above mentioned categories, which can be perceived as time of the day. It is challenging and applause worthy poetry. I was so surprised when I read that the first theme - Neehar - was written by Mrs. Mahadevi when she was in 8th standard!! And what was I doing then? Collecting WWE tattoos!
To better grasp its sense and meaning, I will definitely re-read it. Till then -

लुट जाते अभिराम छिन्न मुक्तावलियों के बन्दनवार,
तब बुझते तारों के नीरव नयनों का यह हाहाकार,
