What makes a young boy turn to the darkness? What turns an honest man into a monster? In this prequel to Whitby's Darkest Secret, journey back and learn about the life of the boy, who grew up to become known simply as 'D'
D: Darkest Beginnings is the background story of the man known only as D!
It’s a quick and easy read chronicling the life and misfortunes of a young, nameless, orphan boy, left to the harsh regime of a workhouse at the tender age of five.
He’s bullied from day one in the workhouse, and by various antagonist as he grows up, and then finally hit by tragedy the day before his wedding.
I will definitely be reading the other books in the series, and have already started D: Whitby’s Darkest Secret, as I am curious to know what becomes of this young man!
Introducing us to a small fragile child and how events turned his whole world upside down, eventually transforming him into something dark and sinister as he appears in the wonderful story 'D:Whitby's Darkest Secret'
I've not yet read Whitby's Darkest Secret, so I don't know what becomes of the poor boy and man who my heart broke for in this prequel short story. All I wanted to do was jump in and rescue that poor 5 year old boy abandoned and then bullied at the workhouse. Chris Turnbull knows how to 'set the stage' and the story felt authentic to the time period in which it's set. Darkest Beginnings is the perfect teaser of what's to possibly come in Whitby's Darkest Secret and Revenge Hits London. I can't wait!
This novella gives you an insight into the main character from the rest of the series..... I struggled a little with the book, I felt I was missing something but wasn’t sure what.....
Definitely different to books I’ve read before and my “normal” choice......
So I read this before reading Whitby's Darkest Secret and now I'm dying to read Whitby's darkest secret! So much is packed into this little origin story and gives such a good picture of "the boy" that it reels you in from page one. The description put into describing 1800s Whitby is also stunning and paints such a beautiful picture!
I have started the series with this short novella, the premise of the story is to give the reader an insight into the main character from the books. At the back of the book is the prolog to the main book. Whilst the story is short it has made me want to read the first book of the series.
