Clara crítica social, o autor descreve a viagem de um sertanejo chamado Severino, que sai de sua terra natal em busca de melhores condições de vida. Durante a jornada, Severino se encontra tantas vezes com a Morte que, desiludido e impotente, percebe que a luta é inútil ― como ele, tantos outros severinos padecem com a miséria e o abandono. Apenas o nascimento de um bebê, uma criança-severina, renova as esperanças e o espírito cansado daquele que já não tinha motivos para continuar a viver.

About the author

João Cabral de Melo Neto was born in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil, and is considered one of the greatest Brazilian poets of all time.

He is often quoted saying "I try not to perfume the flower". His works are said to be dry, devoid of exaggerated emotions that are usually associated with poetry, sticking usually to images and actions and physical descriptions rather than feelings. The image of an engineer designing a building is often used to describe his poetry. It usually follows a strict meter and assonant rhymes.

He worked as a diplomat for most of his life.

In 1990, he won the Camões Prize, the greatest prize in literature of the Portuguese language. In 1992, João Cabral received the Neustadt International Prize for Literature, which some consider to be almost as prestigious as the Nobel Prize.

The dramatic poem “Morte e Vida Severina” is the masterpiece of the poet João Cabral de Melo Neto. Written between 1954 and 1955, it's a regionalist theme.
The book portrays the life of a poor northeastern called Severino who leaves the northeastern hinterland and goes to look for work in the forest zone, throughout his journey he only finds misery and death, but some events make Severino changes his opinion about life.
Bringing to nowadays, we see that the situation present in the book happens today, since many northeasterners go to another city in order to seek a better life or work and they are faced with not so pleasant situations. With these reflections, readers can reflect on the life and death experienced by northeasterners.
“Morte e Vida Severina” represents well the problems that the northeastern people are going through, including hunger and thirst, it also portrays that many northeasterners leave their homes to look for a job in a larger city. Therefore, it's a great book!

Aqui, nasce-se e morre-se. Severino é não só conto, mas existência palpável. Reflexo gigantesco dos passos retirantes que do cemitério inevitável fogem. Recrutar elogios é impossível, pois qualquer tentativa de reduzir a obra ao mais inebriante prazer, tecendo belas palavras, é trabalho inútil - no melhor dos sentidos. Eu releria imediatamente.

Geralmente, não me dou muito bem com poesia (talvez eu não seja inteligente o suficiente para entender uma história em verso, mas estamos trabalhando nisso) e, por isso, eu já comecei o livro achando que não conseguiria entender nada ou quase nada. Fui pega de surpresa por uma leitura bem fácil, linguagem simples e, até mesmo, engraçada em alguns momentos. Além de fazer uma leitura social do Nordeste no século XX, o autor trouxe pessimismo, mas também trouxe esperança. É uma leitura interessante para quem quer conhecer mais da poesia brasileira, mas não tem paciência para ler textos com linguagem mais rebuscada.

Bem, eu não estou dando avaliações para os livros de leitura obrigatória, mas esse seria, com toda a certeza, cinco estrelas. Apesar de uma leitura um pouco monótona em minha opinião, João Cabral de Melo Neto consegue fazer tantas críticas e ressaltar tanto a Vida Severina dos retirantes nordestinos. Um livro escrito a tantos anos atrás e com uma realidade tão triste. Gostei muito.

Sim, morte e vida. Eu morri várias vezes ao tentar ler os poemas desta coletânea. Eu vivi 'Morte e vida severina' para depois morrer novamente.

Vamos dizer que o livro está dividido em quatro partes e vou avaliar separadamente.

A primeira é 'O rio'. Entendi um pouco da mensagem, mas sei que tem mais coisas que não entendi. Três estrelas.

A segunda parte é 'Paisagens com figuras'. Vários poemas curtinho e não entendi quase nenhum. Uma estrela.

A terceira parte é 'Morte e vida severina'. Perfeito. Nada mais a acrescentar. Cinco estrelas e favoritado.

Não sei explicar. Estava com medo de começar a leitura dele, porque as outras leituras iam de mal a pior. Mas Morte e vida é tão diferente, que nem parecia que era o mesmo poeta escrevendo. Foi tão fácil de ler!

A quarta parte é 'Uma faca só lâmina'. Entendi pouco, praticamente nada da mensagem. Duas estrelas.

A nota final do livro, foi uma média da minha experiência como um todo. A média ficou alta, porque ler Morte e vida elevou a experiência às alturas.

Eu me senti burra enquanto lia. Senti que a literatura de João Cabral de Melo Neto não é para mim.

Na verdade, eu queria mesmo era ter lido apenas Morte e vida, mas essa edição tem outras obras. Então eu pensei: "por que não?". Foi um erro.

Não sou adepta a leitura de poesias e poemas. Sequer entendo o mínimo sobre as estruturas e acho que é daí que vem a dificuldade em encontrar o ritmo de leitura. Tampouco tenho uma alma poética. Também me faltou bagagem para entender o contexto dos poemas.

Me envergonho por não ter entendido uns 70% da obra. Mas pelo menos eu tentei e acho que saí ganhando, pois ter lido Morte e vida calou todos os sentimentos negativos que tive ao ler os outros textos.

Se eu pudesse voltar no tempo, teria lido apenas 'Morte e vida severina'.

Morte e vida Severina, or "Death and Life Severina" is, in brief, a disturbing, tragic and above all, a sincere vision of the Northeastern sertão and its literal and symbolic aridity.

The work tells the journey of Severino de Maria, a Severino like thousands of others, a survivor of the sertão and drought, in the sheer concept, who leaves the interior for the coast in the hope of getting a life that brings a minimal chance of getting something more than just survival.

We can take the work, like Clarice Lispector's "The Hour of the Star", as one of the most unique examples of the third phase of Brazilian modernism, It is also one of the most important works by João Cabral de Melo Neto, one of the most contrasting examples of Brazilian poems, especially regionalist ones. It is a symbolist work, expositive, experimental, pessimistic and above all realistic, a question and constant confirmation of the certitude of death and the ephemerality of life, a genuine representation of social death and misery. One of its objectives is to establish the idea of a general representativeness, in which the character does not represent one, but a collective, that even surrounded by death can blossom in life.

The work presents a very characteristic and important metric and sonority; the repetition of verses is also remarkable, with strong narrative and structural value; presents a deep, palpable, and expository message about the Northeast and its life experience, making the work essential reading.

"And if we Severinos are all the same in life, we die the same death, the same Severino death". Amazing! It's impressioning how João Cabral de Melo Neto, thought a simple language, touches the reader in every single verse. The story talks about the hard life of the northeastern Severino, showing how the Dry it's a fundamental factor for that reality, like "the death of those who die of old age before thirty, of an ambuscade before twenty, of hunger a little daily". Heart touching. That would be the word that descreve the poem, because makes us reflecting the pain of the invisibles Brazilians. It's a huge social critical, in Wich João show us to known the story of a lot of "Severinos" from the story of just one Severino. The book outcome it's the most impressioning part, because after all the pessimism, all the figth for survival, all the misery, he show to us the beauty of what is living, showing the spectacle of life, even when it's a "Severino's life".

The work portrays Severino's attempt to "escape" from the Sertão to the coast, seeking a better life. In his path, several events take place, clearly demonstrating social criticism of the poverty and suffering of the northeastern people.
Severino is the one who narrates the whole story and tells what lives along her path, always accompanied by death, which according to him, was the greatest entrepreneur in the Sertão.
It is a good work that brings tension and curiosity to the reader, in addition to showing the reality present in the northeast of that time. with very well used linguistic elements, it brings an excellent Brazilian work.

foi um livro que eu li em classe, e demorei um pouco para começar a gostar. sei lá, eu tava no sétimo ano e não lia mto (até hj não leio muito, me julgue.)-só tipo vbsa- mas mesmo assim gostei mto na época.
foi um pequeno infenrno ler isso c a minha sala, ate pq eu não entendia quase nada da linguagem no começo, mas quando comecei a ebtender, a historia também começou a fluir muito mais.
eu gostei das criticas e tambem na mensagem, o final sendo análogo ao natal (com o nascimento de Jesus) é muito belo.

This is an epic poem in which a poor man from the Brazilian countryside starts to travel to the big city to find a better life. On the way, he comes across a lot of events that don’t give much hope, including the impossibility to find work, several dead people and the same poverty in the city as in the countryside. Eventually, the narrative is interrupted by the birth of a child, who gives hope for a better future. It’s almost Christmas, after all.
Nice, rhythmic poetry in accessible and sometimes humorous Portuguese.
