Cindy has done it again. She's taken me on a rip-roaring-laugh-out-loud ride with the hilarious antics and exploits of Cassie Baxter. This fast-paced whodunit was a fun read and I enjoyed the non-stop action from the time Cassie is introduced to Truman and to when she finally unlocked the secret.

A totally unexpected pleasure for my Christmas Season reading! Cindy Blackburn's thoroughly amusing and altogether quirky Cassie Baxter is back in her second mystery and along with the usual suspects she has brought an unexpected guest! A must read cozy that will not only have you laughing out loud but will also give a few tugs at your heart strings too!
Cassie Baxter is totally unprepared to be a mom, even a temporary one, for a little five and a half year old boy named Truman. His mom has been murdered and her friend has pushed her into lying about being related. Half the fun is Cassie worrying about being sent to jail for kidnapping Truman.
Cassie, who is not a "kid person", luckily lives with her sci-fi writing father who is. Between them and her boyfriend, they just manage to make things a little better for the child and his cat Notz.
It's really a cute story, nearly madcap in places, but amusing.
The only negative was the overdone use of the science fiction story telling from the father. A few times would have been plenty.
I will warn you that this is more a character and comedy piece that a serious mystery, so if you're not in to that, you might skip it. But if you like stories with a clever kid and nervous adults, this could work for you.

This is such a delightful series. I enjoyed the first book in this series, Unbelievable and I think I enjoyed Unexpected even more, if that's actually possible. I love the Baxter family and all the wonderful, quirky characters of Lake Bess, including Ruby and Rose. Even on my crankiest days the Baxters and their neighbors can make me laugh, or even make me cry in a nice, loving sort of way. If there isn't a third book, I'm just going to sit down and cry. Don't take my wonderful new neighbors away, Cindy!
Just what a forty something, single women who lives with her father does not expect. A five and a half year old boy to take care of and keep safe. But Cassie is nothing if not ready for any challenge. Even to finding a murder. This book is easy to get caught up in.
Great characters who I relate to and like, funny true to life, at least to my life, animals, and exciting, fast-paced storyline. I really liked Truman and hoped he'd stay with his new family. Thank you Ms Blackburn, I look forward to the next book in this series and will now read the first two Cueball mysteries that I have in my library!
This book had me laughing at the heroine and her father through this whole book. Love little Truman too. This story kept you guessing from the beginning and a Very Happy ending.
Cassie Baxter may be a professor, but she's not a kid person. So how could she be given a five-year old boy? A boy that she doesn't know, but has to be Aunt Cassie or Momma Cass as she later finds out. As it turns out Cassie is as much a kid person as she is a super sleuth. Finding a killer, helping her sci-fi writer dad with some plot twists, and trying to have a relationship are all in a day's work for our heroine. I hope there will be more books in this great series.
The word that best describes "Unexpected" by Cindy Blackburn is "delightful." The author takes us into two worlds: the "real" life of Vermont resident Cassie Baxter, who is determined to solve a murder, and the fictional world of her father's science fiction novel. The result is a book that will keep you turning the pages to see how things turn out in both worlds. A fantastic sequel to "Unbelievable."
Fun book to read, the characters make the story lively. The main character is a hoot, she gives you a view of how most of us are. She will never be my best friend, she can't keep a secret. Lol
Cassie-Baxter, a history professor, has become one of my favorite characters; and the people surrounding her are interesting as well. She, going through her normal work week and interactions, seems to come up with the answers to a mystery that no one else can see, including law enforcement.
In this case, someone is dead from a car accident near the lovely lakeside town in which she and her Si-Fi writer father live. Cassie receives an unusual task which presents problems. With much confusion, a child who has secrets as to what happened comes into her family’s care.
Blackburn’s writes into the core story secondary fun adventures produced by Cassie’s father and next door boyfriend neighbor that enhances the central mystery. They are enjoyable and move the characters and reader to determine who-done-it.
The writing is well thought out and easy-going, flowing along with few bumps in the road. You’ll laugh and like the tone that leads you to an explosive ending. Then all is calm for the Baxters plus two in Lake Elizabeth until a new mystery comes to a calling.
