Crouch End: Story aus Albträume

Rate this book

Stephen Edwin King was born the second son of Donald and Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. After his father left them when Stephen was two, he and his older brother, David, were raised by his mother. Parts of his childhood were spent in Fort Wayne, Indiana, where his father's family was at the time, and in Stratford, Connecticut. When Stephen was eleven, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury, had become incapacitated with old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of them. Other family members provided a small house in Durham and financial support. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens of Pineland, a nearby residential facility for the mentally challenged.

Stephen attended the grammar school in Durham and Lisbon Falls High School, graduating in 1966. From his sophomore year at the University of Maine at Orono, he wrote a weekly column for the school newspaper, THE MAINE CAMPUS. He was also active in student politics, serving as a member of the Student Senate. He came to support the anti-war movement on the Orono campus, arriving at his stance from a conservative view that the war in Vietnam was unconstitutional. He graduated in 1970, with a B.A. in English and qualified to teach on the high school level. A draft board examination immediately post-graduation found him 4-F on grounds of high blood pressure, limited vision, flat feet, and punctured eardrums.

He met Tabitha Spruce in the stacks of the Fogler Library at the University, where they both worked as students; they married in January of 1971. As Stephen was unable to find placement as a teacher immediately, the Kings lived on his earnings as a laborer at an industrial laundry, and her student loan and savings, with an occasional boost from a short story sale to men's magazines.

Stephen made his first professional short story sale ("The Glass Floor") to Startling Mystery Stories in 1967. Throughout the early years of his marriage, he continued to sell stories to men's magazines. Many were gathered into the Night Shift collection or appeared in other anthologies.

In the fall of 1971, Stephen began teaching English at Hampden Academy, the public high school in Hampden, Maine. Writing in the evenings and on the weekends, he continued to produce short stories and to work on novels.

The King delivers.

Something wrong is happening at Crouch End—strange creatures, weird sightings, pets disappearing... and now, people! Police officers Ted Vetter and Robert Farnham work the night shift at a small London station near Crouch End, when a young woman, on the verge of mental breakdown, frantically bursts into the station desperately reporting that someone—or something—has taken her husband. Nobody wants to admit it but, deep down, they all know it: It's happening again!

This was good, very nice. Somewhat like King's version of Lovecraft's Call of Cthulhu, but with a far more simpler delivery. I thoroughly enjoyed the eerie progression of the story and the general idea of the plot. Everything felt on place and the characters fleshed out and real, as always with the King.

Sadly I had already watched a short adaptation long ago with Claire Forlani and though not many details stuck with me, I still remembered much of the general idea of the plot, so the surprise was totally lost. Still good, and I'm positive I'd have enjoyed this so much more if I hadn't watched it first. King is the King.

*** Crouch End (2006) is a cool adaptation episode. Quite short, 44m only, but good enough to capture most of the plot and reasonably faithful to King's work. A decent performance by Eion Bailey and a very memorable Claire Forlani, my third favorite from her after 'Meet Joe Black' and 'Boys and Girls' (I've watched almost all her filmography). Not a bad complement to the reading (7/10) (Uhm, please note this rating may be hugely biased by my everlasting crush for Claire <3)

King sabe.

This is a tough one to review. It's definitely different from what I'm used to reading from King. I loved that it's set in England, and the premise of the story is perfect and simple: woman comes into a police station to report a missing husband, and the circumstances and story she tells is wild. The young cop doesn't believe her, and the older cop does. The woman's story unfolds for the reader, and it's unsettling and scary, but made worse by the fact that this is a foreign woman in a land she knows nothing about, so she was lost before she was really lost to begin with.
The ending fell very flat for me. It almost did in the whole story. It really could have been an excellent story if not for the ending. I would have been happier, and I don't often say this, with one of King's classic "we'll never know what happened" endings.

Having read enough of Stephen King, his books and short stories become quite predictable in form and format. Then, you get a story like this, very different and novel which keeps your interest.

The story is set around a small part of London with an American Couple. Although there are A LOT of unexplained incidents in this story, such as the Tube passengers, the child with a cloven hand, it doesn’t matter. If for nothing else, and for me, it adds to the mystique and psychological scariness off this story.

A bit weak at the end, otherwise a great story.

I am not in anyway a Stephen King fan… and so I am very surprised that he pulled this little Mythos treat out of the bag.

And pulled it out very well.

As well as the obvious Lovecraft plot it also gave me Machen vibes.

Not sure how I’ve missed this gem in all my Cosmic Horror readings, but if you are a fan of all things Cthulhu based, I would highly recommend.

More like 3.5. Has its moments, though I’ll admit not being the biggest fan of Lovecraftian horror, and this is primarily a love letter to Lovecraft. Love the audiobook version, though, read by the always delightful Tim Curry.

An American couple in London discover a Lovecraftian Nightmare. Told as a recounting from the perspective of the American woman to the police in the "dead end" station. This is creepy and fun. Reminiscent of not just The Great Old Ones but the Rat People of the MindBreakers.

This short story is included in the “Nightmares and Dreamscapes” which I will be reviewing pretty soon.

To be fully honest here, short stories written by Stephen King always miss the mark with me. I always end up not liking his short stories and I don’t know why it is so.

And this short story isn’t any different from Stephen King’s other short stories ive read in the past.

The characters in this short story in my opinion were very boring and uninteresting.

The plot in this one is meh as well because it was very slow, boring and uninteresting. And to be honest writing I’m writing this review the next day after reading this short story and I cant recall what the short story was about because I just didn’t bother remembering this short story because I didn’t like it so much.

The writing style here in my opinion didn’t feel like something written by the one and only master of horror. But rather by someone who have never written any books or short stories before

This story was strange...interesting, but strange. I was really intrigued by the desolate streets and the couple entering a kind of forbidden or lost place. I was less a fan of the strange children and "monsters" that stalked the woman after she had lost her husband, but I guess they do at a little bit of extra atmosphere. I was pleasantly surprised by the ending at the police station. I had not expected anything else after the couple got lost into this inbetween-y world so that was fun. My main issue is that nothing really gets explained. Sure, this is a deliberate choice and having an explanation twice as long as the story itself does not really work but I really think that this story might have had the potential for a full length novel and that that format would have suited me better. Then again Stephen King is a master story teller and this story is certainly enjoyable, especially as a short one right before bed.

Crouch End is a good Lovecraftian horror story in which a man and woman find themselves in another dimension walking through a town in London. This is classic Stephen King horror.
