A Secret She Keeps #2

In the Twisted Web

Nowhere to hide...

Set in a world in which social media and surveillance cameras track our every move, Carolina Carter's second novel is a chilling exploration of our over-exposed and interconnected lives. It's also a electrifying thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page.

Caitlin Alexander has never traveled much beyond her hometown of Pendleton, South Carolina. Then a fellowship takes her to London, where she divides her time between the hectic city and the hush of Epping Forest, where she's studying the "wood wide web"--the complex social network that allows trees to communicate with each other.

But, while Caitlin is studying the trees, someone is watching her, someone who seems to know her every move, someone with access to the most intimate parts of her life. As her stalker grows bolder and more violent, she loses faith in everyone around her--her advisor, her best friend, her former lover... No one is above suspicion, and nowhere is safe.

------

As shocking and psychologically intense as Gillian Flynn's blockbuster, Gone Girl, Carolina Carter's second novel is an electrifying thriller that will keep you guessing until the very last page. If you love Jayne Ann Krentz, A.G. Riddle, Iris Johansen, and J.D. Robb, you're sure to enjoy this chilling journey into the darkest corners of the Internet.

This is a superbly creepy, fast-paced read. If you like psychological thrillers with a dark edge, you'll enjoy this. (And there's a fun little Easter egg for those of us who read Carolina Carter’s debut, Under the Legend.)

Full disclosure: I received an advance readers’ copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Deceit. Mystery. In the Twisted Web is… well, brilliant. Crime intermingles with need and a desire to be free. Carolina Freaking Carter has done it again. WHYYY must these books be so good? I am never disappointed when it comes to Carolina F. Carter – yes, I have officially bestowed Carolina with a new middle name.

We are first introduced to Caitlin, a girl who has lived in the same town nearly her entire life. She wants to be alone – she’s fine alone. In fact, she’s so wonderfully content being a hermit that she isn’t even thinking of her ex-boyfriend, Nate, who recently dumped her. #lie

GIRLFRIEND CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT HIM! Ooo Nate. The dirty scumbag.

Caitlin is trying hard to forget her ex (and all the girls taking pictures with… that… THAT MAN CHILD!) At least Caitlin has her research to keep her mind off of things. She’s going to go to London and research her trees and be free… finally.

“Your qualifications are impressive, and your research initiative is ambitious. However, another finalist was selected to receive the fellowship…”

Well. So much for that plan. No man. No fellowship. Isn’t life just splendid.

Caitlin still has an opportunity to go to London for her research, and while overseas she meets some devilishly creepy men. Her advisor, her ex – oh yes he comes back in the picture – and a slew of strangers that find enjoyment in her looming doom. Watching. Waiting.

DING DING DING! You guessed it! Caitlin has a stalker! Or two? Is it her young advisor she’s doing research under? Is it her ex? Her best friend? Are they conspiring to try and ruin her life, teach her a lesson?! Gaawd who would do something like this? Wait… isn’t Nate living in London, too? Boy oh boy, there’s trouble waiting for our sweet sheltered girl.

Let me tell you this: her advisor gives me the creeps.

“You had better be at the car park near the Connaught Water tomorrow at 6:00am. I don’t want any excuses. And keep your f***ing phone on in case I need to reach you. I’m your advisor, and I am your priority now. If something happens again, you call me first.”

Oh yea? Talk about alpha extreme over here.

As things go from bad to worse, Caitlin instantaneously goes from wanting privacy and being left alone, to wishing someone she knew was near. Let’s just hope she doesn’t trust the wrong people - and of course she does… how do you think she got into this debacle in the first place? 😏

“Is there someone I can call to be with you?... Any family or any friends?... I know you are a visitor to England, but do you not have anyone over here?...”

Ummm. No. Caitlin has no one. NADA. Trapped. Helpless. What's a girl to do?...

Carolina Carter writes thrillers like no one else. You know those terrible dreams where you’re being chased, but you’re moving. so. slow? Gaawd I felt like I was tossed onto a semipermeable membrane and all of my surroundings were passing through, but I was just stuck there… watching everything float to the other side. My blood was thick with anticipation! Oooo the sweet anxiety! (Why do I do this to myself?) Carolina filtered me through a volatile, porous material and I came out a NEW WOMAN!

In the Twisted Web is a dark, realistic portrayal of fear. There is certainly sexual tension between Caitlin and the men in this book, but it falls into the categories of suspense, crime, and women’s fiction more than anything. The context is definitely smutty, and almost uncontrollably raw.

In the Twisted Web is a flawless – and haunting – depiction of how our world is connected. The writing is fast-paced, enticing, and evocative. We’ve got sexual tension, mystery, and suspense wrapped up into the ultimate package; it’s a tailor-made read that will launch you into an eerie sinister world.

Intriguing. Kept you guessing. I thought I figured it out but I ended up being wrong. I hope there is another story to continue where it left off. Interested in knowing what happens to Caitlin.

In the Twisted Web was a VERY good book. It was an exciting, edge of your seat read!!!! Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen there was another "twist" in the plot that made it impossible for me to put this book down until I finished the entire book! Carolina Carter is an exceptional writer!!! Her characters are so well written and this reader feels like I end up right in the midst of the story. Caught up completely with the exciting, scary, and chilling "Twists" and turns of this "Web" so well described in this FANTASTIC mysterious book by Carolina Carter! I highly recommend this book to everyone who enjoys a fast paced mystery, filled with great characters who keep you guessing who, and what they really are. I LOVED this BOOK!!!

This book is about a girl who goes to London to study the Epping Forest. While she is there, strange things start happening to her. When she tells her best friend back in the USA, her friend comes to London. Her emails get tampered with, she feels like she is being watched all the time. At first she thinks it is her advisor at the college, little does she know! Things get really bad and they call in the police, but even the police are having a hard time helping her. Can she find out who is responsible for all the terrible things happening to her? Does she discover the reasoning why? Read the book to find out. I received a copy of this book, but the review is voluntarily my own.

What A Twisted Web We Weave
This is a fast paced thriller! The book had you from the start. Caitlin is a small town girl who goes to London to study the complex social network that allows trees to communicate. If that isn't interesting enough her life turns into a very twisted web. She has a stalker. She becomes paranoid of everyone. Who can she trust? It is on the dark side but it is a book you can't put down.
Definitely twisted!

This book is a real thriller and a bit on the dark side, following 24 year old Caitlin as she travels to London to follow her dream doing research in the Epping Forest. Others are monitoring her every move via social media and the internet. This is a real page turner and keeps you guessing until the very end who the stalker is. If you like a thriller you'll love this book.

Another awesome book from Carolina! I loved the suspense and every time I thought I knew who the culprit was, I was mistaken! Loved the way you tied Under The Legend in! Can't wait for your next one!
