Though happy to be back at his job as a criminal investigator, Larry Macklin is struggling to adapt to life with his new partner. But concerns about his work relationship quickly take a back seat to his personal life when his irrational ex-girlfriend, Marcy, returns to town. Larry soon has bigger problems when members of a prominent local family are killed off one by one. As he tries to find the murderer before anyone else in the family loses their life, Larry’s investigation intersects with a hare-brained search for stolen Nazi gold. Are the bumbling treasure hunters—Marcy among them—somehow responsible for the murders? Or is someone else picking off members of the family for financial gain? With a long list of suspects and a very short list of motives, Larry is going to need a lot of luck to solve this case.
A. E. Howe lives and writes on a farm in the wilds of north Florida with his wife, horses and more cats than he can count. He received a degree in English Education from the University of Georgia and is a produced screenwriter and playwright. His first published book was Broken State; the Larry Macklin Mysteries is his first series and he has plans for more. Howe is also the co-host of the "Guns of Hollywood" podcast, part of the Firearms Radio Network. When not writing or podcasting, Howe enjoys riding, competitive shooting and working on the farm.
Deputy Investigator Larry Macklin is back to his job, with a new partner. She is clever and resourceful. Prominent Adam County family members are being killed. He suspect each family member, loving, caring brothers and sisters. Or are they? Meantime his crazy ex girlfriend is in town, Larry has to deal with her and her gold hunting friends she came with. Enjoyable story.
This is the 5th book of this series that features Larry Macklin. If you haven't read the first 4, I highly recommend that you read them in order. It's not absolutely necessary, but I find it's always fun to watch how characters grow and change over time.
This time around, Larry has female troubles. He's trying to understand and work with his new partner, Darlene. His girlfriend, Cara, is a vet and everything seems well for them .. until a crazy ex- girlfriend shows up, Marcy.
Meanwhile, a very prominent family is being killed off one by one. Some good old fashioned investigating leads Larry and Darlene to some treasure hunters .. one of them is his ex. Marcy may be crazy .. but would she kill anyone, let alone 3 someones, over a treasure that may have never existed?
There's a long line of suspects, but very little information in the way of motive. Larry's luck may have run out.
This is really good series .. murder & mayhem, fast-paced action, and wonderful characters. Larry has had some issues with his father ... working for the Sheriff isn't always easy. And Larry's trying to be an excellent investigator. Cara makes a good partner for him .. she's easy going and level-headed. I love how he and Darlene interact .. it's a bit like oil and water, but they are both working on it.
I liked the story premise. The treasure hunt stirred my interest in seeing how this all all turned out. I genuinely look forward to Larry's next adventure.
I always love seeing Mauser make an appearance and now there's Ivy .... watch for them.. they are priceless!
I wish to thank the author for the digital copy of this book. The opinion expressed here is unbiased and completely my own.
This is the 5th book that I have read in this series and author A. E. Howe did not disappoint. While this book could easily be a stand alone read I would recommend reading the first four. Main character Larry Macklin is a hometown, everyday guy doing a difficult job as a small town detective at a department where his father is the sheriff. This book is a fun read with an interesting murder investigation as members of a prominent local family are being killed one at a time. I'll be reading the rest of the books in this series and can't wait to see what's next in store for Macklin professionally and personally.
First I must say I like a series. I enjoy following the characters through life. The main character is maturing into a more confident person. He has found love and acceptance. Let's hope he doesn't throw it all away! Greed for something that wasn't earned or theirs is the story line. It was an easy ,interesting and fast paced book.
Is it just me or does Larry seem to have this very strange sort of luck at being at the very right moment when it comes to finding the killer? Need to check, but like with the serial killer, he stumbled in it, not really solved it. Does this take away from the enjoyment of the book or series? Hell, no. I will try and read only one per month. Let's see if I manage that.

Yup, that's right, I needed this for my book challenge. But that's not the only reason I read it, this really is an enjoyable series that I cannot get enough of, it just so happens that the order I read them is being a little warped. This time around Larry and Co. have to deal with a series of murders involving a prominant local family at a time when Larry's dad is looking to be re-elected as Sheriff and there are rumours of buried gold and long standing family secrets. Once again the story flows well, leaving you neither bored nor confused and my favourite CI Eddie makes a bit of an appearance too (he is growing on me more and more).
I found this book to be well written as it is fast paced, has very interesting characters and really screwed up motives for murder which also make this book very engaging and hard to put down. It’s just plain and simply really good and easy to recommend to others who want a good clean read that is filled with better things like difficult crimes, huge searches, friendships, political pressure, police procedure and good crime sleuthing. Can’t praise it high enough.
An AEH. Mystery Novel (LMMB - 5)/A Murder and a Cover Up
AEH. has. penned the fifth mystery novel in the LMMB - 5 series. A Young Man and his sister inherits their fathers farm. The lady plans to cash. The man changes his mind and elements to keep the farm. The woman looses her cool and kills her brother and then asks a friend to help cover it up. Then our trusty investigators arrive in the scene and she many glaring things out of place. This is an excellent read for the genre.....DEHS
Overall the series has been very good, but this one seemed kind of slow or it may have been I missed the chemistry of Larry and Pete as partners. Of the primary characters Darlene is the first one that I ‘m not a fan of. Shantel was my least favorite until Darl came along.
Hoping next book picks up the pace and maybe Darlene meets Mr. Right but he lives on the west coast and being a cop in LA gets her all pumped and she bails 😀 Hey a reader can hope.
The fifth book in the Larry Macklin mystery series is an entertaining mix of action, murder and mayhem spiced up with a little tension between his romantic interests - past and present. And then there is Ivy the tabby cat. I laughed out loud when Larry Macklin reprimands his cat after a break-in at his house, “she was going to have to up her guard cat game, or we were going to have to get a dog.” Great read, looking forward to number six. Cheers Lynda Lock
I've really enjoyed the books I've read in this series. For a small town, there seems to an unusually large number of crimes. However the sheriff's office seems to be able to adequately solve these crimes in an entertaining and suspenseful way. I haven't read the books in order, but it doesn't seem to matter. I recommend any in the series for good reading.
Have finished book five of the Larry Macklin series, and will soon begin the sixth. Enjoying the novels a great deal. Good mysteries are my reading addiction. Characters are believable, and the mysteries are solved realistically. Recommend the series to anyone who likes cop-drama.
The Larry Macklin books always keep you guessing and this one is no different except that the crazy ex-girlfriend has come back to town....what is she up to? I enjoyed this book.
With so many characters, its hard enough keeping track of who, what, when, where and who put the lead pipe in the well. Nice way to wrap things up at a funeral! Had me guessing all the way to the end. Nice work!
Love this series. It keeps you guessing until the very end who done it. I highly recommend this series. I can't wait to read the next book in the series.
A good writer with a good story. Interesting characters, packed with all kinds of action, laughs, and adventure. There is even a treasure hunt for stolen gold.
