six unusual tales about the woes and joys of winter
Find out why Granny needs a dragon for Christmas. Get a scare as you witness a young dragon's meeting with the Georges. Find stinky socks and be awed by the light of an angel. The tales in this collection will soothe your heart even if you're not overly fond of the season.
Katharina Gerlach was born in Germany in 1968. She and her three younger brothers grew up in the middle of a forest in the heart of the Luneburgian Heather. After romping through the forest with imagination as her guide, the tomboy learned to read and disappeared into magical adventures, past times or eerie fairytale woods.
She didn’t stop at reading. During her training as a landscape gardener, she wrote her first novel, a manuscript full of a beginner’s mistakes. Fortunately, she found books on Creative Writing and soon her stories improved. For a while, reality interfered with her writing but after finishing a degree in forestry and a PhD in Science she returned to her vocation. She likes to write Fantasy, Science Fiction and Historical Novels for all age groups.
At present, she is writing at her next project in a small house near Hildesheim, Germany, where she lives with her husband, three children and a dog.
3,5* I bought this because real life was quite bad, and I wanted a nice Christmas read break. The blurb saying
"The tales in this collection will soothe your heart even if you're not overly fond of the season."
made it sound just perfect!
My grandma was dying when I started this, and I read the first story the exact night she died. So having the grandma leaving at the end of her life in the very first story was... Yeah... *Wry smile here*
And the other stories also have a lot of loss and tragedies. Yes, it might be about making the most of those situations, but it's not at all what I would expect from "soothing the heart".
Aside from the tone and topics though, the stories were fluent and easy to read. Almost a bit too short and easy at times for my personal taste. But still entertaining and interesting enough so I do not regret the time or money spent on the book! (Especially as the ebook really wasn't expensive)
This was a quick read. I thought since my tree is still up I could still handle me some Christmas, especially if there are dragons! Check and check!
If you read my reviews often, you know I am not a fan of short stories. I love long series type reads. I like getting to know the characters really well. But I have read other books by Katharina Gerlach that were delightful so I knew I couldn't go wrong. I just needed to read something light between the heavier reads of post-apocalyptic dramas and the next long read. This hit the spot!
Did I mention it has dragons? And that starts with the first story that was touching and sweet. I think it was my favorite of all the stories.
Please, if you need a Hallmark moment that includes Christmas and Dragons, give this gem a read!
This is a collection of wintery tales that focus on the magical. some are poignant, others more whimsical, but each glistens with the warmth of love and the hope inherent in family bonds. And dragons. There are definitely dragons.
I found this book discounted on Amazon; this is my honest review. Average 4 stars. #1 Christmas Dragon ***** Wow. At one point the girl thinks "I bet she would have been the best author ever had she put up an effort into writing down what she told us." SHE could have done it. #2 Canned Food **** Confusing but cute. #3 Stinky Socks ****Funny and sad. #4 An Angel's Light *** Weird, super sad. "“I tried to spend as much time as I could with Brent, knowing I'd lose him soon. I thought you'd understand.” --- for 54 weeks!!!!! #5 A Different Kind of Happiness *** Are these books all about comas and deaths??? #6 Third Time's a Charm ***** Great story.
Six wonderful and mystical tales perfect to read to the younger group. My favorite of course is The Christmas Dragon, but all are whimsical and worth the time. I am not normally a short story person. But the author brings a bit of sunshine to these seasonal holiday tales that are great for any age. Reviewed by Cyrene
