Baby, It's Christmas/Their Little Princess

Very good story of love, forgiveness, and letting go. Tanner is a confirmed bachelor, happy with fleeting relationships, until one of those women ended up pregnant. Though he initially agreed to give the baby up for adoption, by the time the baby was born he had changed his mind. Even though he knows nothing about babies, he's determined to keep his daughter.

I loved the encounter between Tanner and Kelly. As the doctor who delivered the baby, she knows about the adoption, so she is surprised when Tanner shows up at the hospital. Her low opinion of him undergoes a quick transformation as she sees his sincerity about raising his daughter. I loved watching him fumble around, trying to find the words to explain how he felt. His panic was pretty amusing as Kelly started to tell him what he needed to do, and his relief was clear when she offered to help.

I loved the development of the relationship between Tanner and Kelly. They quickly became friends, bonding over the care of little Lia. I liked the way that each of them grew comfortable enough to share the shadows in their lives. I ached for Tanner and his fears that he isn't capable of the commitment needed to be a good father. I liked the way that Kelly's support and confidence in him lessened those fears. Tanner's concern for Lia and what to tell her about her mother hits Kelly hard. She is still dealing with the guilty feelings of giving up her own daughter when she was a teenager. I loved how Tanner tried to show Kelly that she wasn't the selfish monster that she thinks she is. While all of this is going on, there is a growing attraction between Tanner and Kelly. Neither expects it, and they aren't quite sure what to do about it until it becomes impossible to resist. Their feelings for each other grew, but both of them had issues holding them back. In spite of his success, Tanner has some deep-seated esteem issues, causing him to believe that as a builder he isn't good enough for Kelly the doctor. Kelly believes that she doesn't really deserve to be happy and has been hiding from living life fully. It takes some heart-to-heart advice from those they love to open their eyes. I loved the advice that Tanner got from his brother, but what really got to me was the talk that Kelly had with her dad. I loved seeing Kelly go after what she wanted and Tanner's surprise when it was him. I loved the epilogue and seeing the family a few years down the line. There was a nice little surprise along with it.

There were quite a few emotional and heartwarming scenes throughout the book, as well as some that were laugh out loud funny. Tanner's introduction to his daughter was one that reminded me of when my daughter was born and her daddy held her for the first time. Kelly's devotion to her patients was incredible. She brought me to tears with the one emergency situation with the teenager and the talk they had afterward. I also laughed at the scenes where Tanner first dealt with the diaper and the baby shower was a riot. He was especially sweet and funny when he talked about buying Christmas presents for Lia.

Hold Me, Cowboy

Good story of opposites attracting. Madison is a member of Copper Ridge's wealthiest family, but one who has been something of an outsider for the past ten years. At seventeen, she was seduced by a married instructor, but when the affair was discovered, she was blamed. Hurt, bitter and emotionally devastated, she has avoided any relationships since then, using a snarky attitude to keep people at a distance. But she's tired of her celibacy and has set up a weekend away with an acquaintance, one that she feels won't threaten her defensive walls. But a snowstorm keeps her partner away, and a power outage sends her to the cabin next door for help. To say she isn't happy at who opens the door would put it mildly.

Sam is the local farrier who has taken care of her family's horses for several years. He is also a talented metal sculptor who has come to the cabin as a retreat to decide what he's going to make next. Sam is gruff, grouchy and anti-social. He's carrying some baggage of his own from the past which has left him guilt-ridden and emotionally closed off. He, too, has avoided intimacy of any kind since it happened. Having Madison, who has been a thorn in his side for years, show up at his door is not the inspiration he was looking for. But he can't let her freeze, so he lets her in.

Sam and Maddy have been butting heads for years. He thinks she's a snob and she thinks he's just a jackass. But all that antagonism has been a cover for the attraction that both have been trying to deny. When Sam finds out about Maddy's plans for the weekend, he offers to fill in. A passion filled weekend will scratch their respective itches and they can go back to normal when they go home. However, things get much more intense than either expected, and within a few days of going home they decide they want to continue for a little longer. They give themselves permission to carry on until Christmas, and then they'll end it.

But a funny thing happens in the midst of all that window steaming togetherness. Sam's gruffness hides a pretty sensitive heart and Maddy finds herself opening up about the events behind her ten year dry spell. His lack of condemnation for her actions and his disgust with the instructor, go a long way toward healing the hurt that has been with her for so long. It also makes her far more willing to open herself up to the feelings that are growing for Sam. He has also begun experiencing feelings that he has closed off, but he's not at all happy about it. He tells Maddy about the tragedy that has made him the way he is, and is stunned that she doesn't feel the same disgust with him that he does. I ached for Maddy as she tells him how she feels and he does his best to drive her away. I loved seeing her admit that she's made her mistakes, but that she's through accepting all the blame. But getting Sam to see that he doesn't deserve the guilt he heaps on himself doesn't go as well. I cried for her unhappiness, as she is sure that Sam loves her, but can't get past his own pain. I loved seeing his brother Chase dish out the same medicine that Sam gave him, enabling Sam to finally see the truth. I loved the ending, with Sam and Maddy coming together, but also agreeing that love isn't going to turn them into a unicorns and rainbows kind of couple, that snark and sarcasm will always be a part of who they are.

The title and cover had me fooled. I wanted a Christmas read. Between both of the stories there probably isn't even 5% of Christmas mentioned. I did however enjoy most of Susan Mallery's story. The second story was just ok. Way too much sex for me. Even when it wasn't happening it was on the brain. I like more when the door is closed that's it. I don't need to know what exactly they're doing, thinking, or saying. That's when the eye rolls come. I mostly likely wouldn't have read these stories if it wasn't for the falsely claiming to be holiday reads.

Review for Baby, It's Christmas only

Quick, easy read. I enjoyed the way the author had Tanner, the father, decide not to sign the papers to give up his baby and instead raises her himself. (Well with some help from a few others.) Dr. Kelly was a nice added touch since she gave up a child years ago and has forever wondered what would've happened if she hadn't. Their stories separate and then together intertwined nicely for this romance.

I've read several other books by this author in the past, and enjoyed them. I was looking for some quick and easy holiday books I could listen to on audiobook, and this was available, so I snatched it up.
I don't expect a Christmas romance novella to be full of depth and unforgettable characters, but this felt like the author wrote it over a weekend and didn't bother to hand it in to an editor before it was published.
I know that sounds harsh, but I can't believe this is written by the same author as several other books that I've read and liked. This is corny, unrealistic, and syrupy sweet.
The dialogue is really bad. The characters will go on these long-winded monologues about one thing or another and it doesn't feel authentic to the way that people actually talk to one another. For example, one scene has our lady lead (I don't remember and can't be bothered to look up her name) talking to our male lead (again, don't care what his name is) about how she gave a baby up for adoption. She goes into this whole spiel about adoption in general, and then her choice to put up her baby and then their current situation. It all sounds clinical and informative, and not at all how two people would organically have a conversation regarding the subject.
Also, the romance is just so bland. There isn't any sort of conflict between them. She hates him for about two seconds at the beginning of the book until she realizes that the biological mother of the child misled her about his character. Then everything is fine and she wants to jump him.
I have zero connection to this book, and luckily it wasn't something I spent money on, so I had no qualms in quitting it and moving on with something else.

This Christmas romance revolves around Kelly and Tanner. Tanner finds himself a bit lost when his daughter is born. He and her mother planned to place the child for adoption, but he has second thoughts at the last minute. Kelly is an OB/GYN who has been working with the mother of Tanner’s new baby. While she has given up on the idea of a relationship or family for herself, when Tanner shows up questioning what to do with his new daughter, Kelly jumps in head first and offers to help him. However, will memories of her past and regrets in her present be too much for Kelly to handle, or is her future right in front of her?

While I enjoyed this story, I found it highly unlikely. The circumstances that brought them together were already unlikely, but finding out they were already connected through mutual friends/family and yet knew nothing of each other made it even more unlikely. However, while the story was unrealistic, it was a quick, feel-good Christmas romance. Seeing these two come together for this sweet baby made their attraction for one another just a little bit sweeter. Together, they were able to find their dreams and get more than just their Christmas wish.

Tanner was a likeable guy. There was definitely more to him than met the eye. He had a rough start in life, but with hard work, he had made a successful life for himself. He fell in love with his daughter instantly, and while he didn’t know the first thing about parenting, he wanted to learn and do his best. Kelly had a good heart and a lot of baggage. While she seemed to have it all together, there was a lot in her past she needed to deal with in order to move forward. I loved that while they both had to deal with their own problems, they gave each other the strength and encouragement to embrace a beautiful future together.

I enjoyed this story. It was quick and entertaining. If you are looking for a sweet, feel-good Christmas story that reads similar to a Hallmark movie, this could be the perfect book for you!

Two stories in one book.

Baby, It's Christmas by Susan Mallery is a cute, warmhearted Christmas story about being able to forgive yourself for past choices. Tanner has always lived a carefree, single life with no commitments. A previous relationship has produced a baby and while he originally agreed to put the baby up for adoption, he has now changed his mind. Panic sets in because he knows nothing about babies and approaches the doctor who delivered her, asking for help. Kelly doesn't like Tanner at first, thinking he is an irresponsible playboy but soon learns there is more to Tanner. While she is battling her past demons, she grows closer to Tanner and his daughter. She must forgive her past in order to have a future.

Hold Me, Cowboy by Maisey Yates was a little harder for me to get into. Sam is a rough, abrasive character but as the story goes on, he becomes easier to like. Sam and Madison are both struggling to forgive themselves for past occurrences and not looking for a relationship but agree to a temporary affair. The relationship leads to self discovery, some healing and a promise of a future.

Baby It's Christmas-- Kelly gives up her baby as a teenager and years later wonders if she done the right thing but the family she gave AnnieJane to can't have children of their own so it is the perfect solution. She becomes a Dr. and delivers a very special baby girl 15 yrs later and the Mother does not want to keep it but, the Father does and he and Kelly become close and eventually get married and add to their family and after a couple yrs she gets to meet Anni Jane. A very heartwarming Christmas read.
Hold Me Cowboy-- Madison West makes very bad decision as teenager and lets older man that should have been looking out for her take advantage of her then, her own Dad does not try to protect her-- he should be tared and feathered along with her trainer. Sam has bad experience with girl he considered out of his class and blames himself for her death after 10 yrs for Madison and 5 for Sam, they find each other and help each other start to heal. This is second time I have read this book and it was just as good.

Tanner did not plan on keeping the child he had with his ex-girlfriend but he can't seem to make himself sign the adoption papers. This means he's not the proud father of a brand-new baby girl. With absolutely no idea what he's doing. As an obstetrician Kelly knows quite a bit about newborns and is eager to help Tanner acclimate to fatherhood, providing insight and guidance. What she wasn't expecting was to fall in love with the new father. As they adapt to the big changes in their lives both Tanner and Kelly need to look back to their pasts and work through the secrets they thought they left behind. A really fun, sweet story about giving themselves a second chance and finding love.

This edition also had a story from Maisey Yates, a novella in the Cooper Ridge series. There was a number of secondary characters that added to the enjoyment of this story but if I hadn't read those stories as well I may have been a little lost.

Overall, great reads!

The story is about a woman who is successful in her job as an obstetrician and is at the same time burdened by the decision she made when she was 17 years old. She feels insecure. She meets a successful building contractor who is meeting his baby for the first time, the baby's mother does not want to be part of her life and has given her up for adoption but he has refused to sign the papers and decided to raise her on his own but has no clue how to go about it. She offers to help him buy the things he needs for his baby before he takes her home. She gravitates towards the baby and falls for the father but she is also insecure and he is intimidated by the fact that she is a doctor. It's a beautiful story. It shows a man's vulnerability and and how a successful woman can overcome her insecurity and give herself a second chance of having a family. I loved it.

I entered an on-line contest to win a box of books. I didn't win the grand prize, but did receive a copy of this book in the mail from Susan Mallery. What a happy surprise! I enjoyed the first story, Baby, It's Christmas, in this book very much. Loved the interactions between Tanner and Kelly; and of course, the totally clueless new dad shopping in the baby store made me laugh out loud. It's a romance ... so the story was predictable, but that was expected so I still enjoyed it.

The second story, Hold Me, Cowboy, was not to my taste. I did come to care for the characters Madison and Sam by the end of the book and can not imagine the strength required to come through the challenges they had each faced with their heads held high, but they were just a little too crass for me.

The first story in this book really captured my attention. I didn't want to put the book down. I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters. I am looking forward to reading another story by Susan Mallery.

The second story in this book took a little longer for me to become interested. I found that the way this story was written was unconventional; usually you learn about the characters first before the intimate moments begin between characters. In this story the intimate moments take up the first part of the book before we start to learn the background of the characters. I've never read this author before so this might be her usual way to write; I just found it hard to relate to the characters and become involved when I didn't know much about them.

I'm giving it 4 out of 5 stars because I enjoyed Ms. Mallery's story more than Ms. Yates. I enjoyed Baby, It's Christmas. I liked Dr Kelly Hall. Loved her back story. And Tanner Malone and baby Lia. Perfect Christmas stores.
Hold Me, Cowboy turned out to be good, once the story got going and we got to know why Sam and Maddy were the way they were. They actually had great back stories. But it started out all about sex right away, and I'm not a fan of that. And they didn't even like each other. Thus, 4 instead of 5 stars.

I try to read one or two Christmasy things each year and for 2018 this is it.

It's a very quick read and the writing is good - especially during the steamy bits, but...

The tone and topic of the subplot felt a bit preachy. The female love interest gave up a baby for adoption (and she is also in full contact with the child's grandparents) and has never gotten over it, meanwhile our male love interest got a girlfriend pregnant and decided to raise the baby himself. The preachy part came into play regarding abortion etc. it was very borderline, but still annoying.

3.5 - Ob/gyn Kelly enjoys delivering her patient's babies, but she's holding back a secret. Single father Tanner asks her to help him get ready for the homecoming of his newborn daughter. Can Kelly keep her professional distance? Unlikely, Tanner's just that good of a dad. I liked this one - Baby, It's Christmas - better than the bonus story, Hold Me, Cowboy. The cowboy story told about rancher Madison, wounded from a romance gone wrong when she was a teenager. Cowboy Sam may just be the guy to help her find love again. But of course, he has his own troubles.

This storyline is a nice flowing, well developed with believable and likeable, caring characters that pull it together. This is a great, fast read you will not want to put down. The love story doesn't disappoint. You will love how it shows how opposites attrack with the characters of Kelly and Tanner. I enjoyed Maisy Yates book in this duo combo. Susan Mallory has done it again and I recommend this book.

Baby It’s Christmas is a novel that filled me with everything I want in a romance novel.
Kelly is an obstetrician and Tanner is a building contractor who have very little in common, but circumstances bring them together.
I am so glad I listened to this audiobook. It was a sweet romance that made me smile as I listened.
Susan Mallery is one my favorite authors. I enjoy everything she has written.

Stopped halfway through. Really don’t bother with this. If I had to read Tanner ask Kelly, “Why aren’t you married?” one more time I would’ve tossed the book in the trash. Some books don’t need to be updated with new covers because this makes me never want to read this author’s other books ever or the bonus story.

Wonderful Reads

Susan has written a wonderful story in Baby, It's Christmas. I couldn't put it down. I never read a book from the second author. Hold Me, Cowboy was a nice story but a little long. Could have shorten it and given us a later in time ending.

Another great book from Susan.

He second book I really identified with the main characters and their families. However, the ending while being complete, was confusing on the hero's reasoning as to getting back with the heroine.

Can a single man who can’t settle down with one woman step up to be a father to his little girl? Yes, Tanner Malone does just that. Of course, he finds help from Dr. Kelly Hall who delivered Tanner’s daughter.

Great story from Susan Mallery! I love her books.
