Slayer: Repentless

Rate this book
The planet's most badass metal band takes control of comics! The ultimate thrash juggernaut, Slayer has dominated stages and destroyed audiences for over thirty years, with their latest album, Repentless, showing no signs of slowing down or showing mercy. Based on the brutal Repentless video trilogy by B. J. McDonnell, this expansion of the video storylines by writer Jon Schnepp (Metalocalypse, Venture Brothers) and illustrator Guiu Vilanova (Conan, Weird Detective) drives deep into the darkest heart of America, spawning a raging road trip down a bloodstained highway, a tale of the doomed, the damned . . . and the repentless!

This is pure satanic, evil filth."--The Vigilant Christian (on Slayer's Repentless video)

"We're telling the story that we've always told about society and how humans treat each other."--Tom Araya, Slayer

A Slayer comic. This should be good... it is!

What’s it about?
Tying in with the music video trilogy of You Against You, Repentless and Pride in Prejudice a man has a brother who’s a Nazi asshole. His wife (or maybe girlfriend, I don’t think they specified) is killed by some Nazis (mostly cause the Nazi is mad that his decent brother ended up falling in love with a woman who’s black) so it’s time for vengeance.

Pros:
The story is pretty good. Not the most deep thing but for a fun action story, it’s pretty good.
The art is fantastic and has great detail.
The action scenes are frequent, brutal and fantastic!
Slayer fans will probably be pleased with all of the great references and easter eggs throughout. There are several and they are great!
There’s a heavy anti-racism message that is well written.

Cons:
This book is very predictable. If anyone is thinking this book is gonna be something other than the protagonists kill Nazis with Slayer umm... yeah, I have no idea what gave them that idea.
Aside from the guys from Slayer, the characters aren’t that interesting.
This comic can be a bit jumpy and confusing now and then.
Each issue has song lyrics at the beginning which is cool and all but the lyrics to the final chorus of Pride in Prejudice got mixed up somehow.

Overall:
If you’re not a Slayer fan and/or you’re expecting an intellectual and meaningful book, you will probably find this stupid.
If you’re a Slayer fan who wants to read something gory as fuck with a bunch of action than this is for you.
I recommend this one to Slayer fans. Others, not so much.
🤘FUCKING SLAYER!🤘

Based on a video trilogy by Slayer I guess. The story of 2 brothers raised as Nazis. One overcomes his hate, the other doesn't. They beat and murder everything in their path until one is dead. Felt like a big excuse to draw an ultra-violent comic book with limbs flying everywhere for no purpose.

Received an advance copy from Dark Horse and Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

I didn't even know this existed until a couple weeks ago. I caught an old interview where the band were at ComicCon signing copies of it and ordered the thing right away because SLAYYEEEEERRRRR!!!!1111

It doesn't really read like a comic book. It's a series of scenes extrapolated from the Repentless, You Against You and Pride in Prejudice videos and wrapped up into a coherent narrative with a lot of Slayer lyrics and random scenes of extreme violence. If you're not a Slayer fan or aren't into their latest album, you might not dig this as much as I did. But it was the closest I've even been of being actually inside a Slayer song. There is:

- A young, pissed off protagonist that stands in for the listener.

- The actual band Slayer, masquerading as hyperviolent bikers

- Idiot Nazis (Slayer were accused of being Nazis for decades, to they like to make it clear that they aren't)

- Violence that shouldn't have anything to do with the protagonist.

- A vile blood feud that has everything do to with him.

It's an ode to righteous anger and to the band's been helping their fans living with theirs for 28 years.

No esperaba ninguna trama profunda, sólo violencia, sangre y SLAYER!

I mean let’s be real, it’s a fun novelty but that’s about it. The story (what little there is), is completely devoid of originality or fully conceptualized. The artwork is just fine, but at the end of the day this is a cool novelty for a Slayer fan. Listen, I love Slayer, but this is pretty goofy. It’s a bunch of blood and splatter and eye-roll inducing panels of slayer lyrics used as dialogue as if it’s clever. It’s actually quite hilarious. That said, I’m giving it two stars because it was kind of fun just to get through. Borrowing from the library is great. Would I go out of my way to buy this even as a massive Slayer fan? Not a chance 🤣 There’s cooler stuff out there, notably their music itself lol. But that’s just me.

"An eye for an eye leaves the whole world blind." - Gandhi

"Strive for peace with acts of war/
The beauty of death we all adore" - Disciple by Kerry King & Slayer

Jon Schnepp started with a heavy metal band as his jumping off point and ended up writing a story about how hate destroys lives and families. Centering around 2 siblings - a Cain and Abel of sorts -Schnepp is playing with ideas of "Am I my brother's keeper?" while never being overly sanctimonious.

This comic is about blood and it is very rough around the edges. But if you can get past the brutality, its about (thematically) so much more than gore.

A brilliant trilogy from the late, great "Sweaty" Jon.

I liked The references to Slayer's song, most of The kills where pretty brutal, The appearance of the band themselves where pretty badass as well as the main character.

But like the album it was based on, It's enjoyable but tries to hard to be edgy at times.

In the end To fully enjoy this comic, You must be A fan of Slayer and/or you like your comics with tons of gore and hints of edge.

I was so excited for this, but somewhat disappointed in it. I guess I expected more backstory and character development. The art was good and fun to look at. The storyline was good, too, and matched the videos pretty well. The writing was not bad, but not fantastic. Now, I love Slayer and I love the videos this comic is based on, so I guess I wanted a bit more than was here. Maybe next time.

It's not bad, though it's probably much better if you've seen the video from which it's adapted, which I have not. That said, it's definitely intense, with plenty of gore and aggression from every character, which I guess fits in well with Slayer's aesthetic and philosophy. Read dates approximate because I forget exactly when I specifically read the entire text.

So deliriously stupid that it ends up being amazing, this made me reconsider my refusal to believe in the concept of a guilty pleasure.

Less gory than the music video's (and the Repentlentless Killogy film [+live gig]). Continuing the tale of our eyepatched anti-hero with added Slayer lyrics, it makes up for the lack of extreme violence with exquisite art, framing and writing.
