Jane Austen was an English novelist known primarily for her six novels, which implicitly interpret, critique, and comment upon the English landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Austen's plots often explore the dependence of women on marriage for the pursuit of favourable social standing and economic security. Her works are an implicit critique of the novels of sensibility of the second half of the 18th century and are part of the transition to 19th-century literary realism. Her deft use of social commentary, realism and biting irony have earned her acclaim among critics and scholars.

The anonymously published Sense and Sensibility (1811), Pride and Prejudice (1813), Mansfield Park (1814), and Emma (1816), were a modest success but brought her little fame in her lifetime. She wrote two other novels—Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, both published posthumously in 1817—and began another, eventually titled Sanditon, but died before its completion. She also left behind three volumes of juvenile writings in manuscript, the short epistolary novel Lady Susan, and the unfinished novel The Watsons.
Since her death Austen's novels have rarely been out of print. A significant transition in her reputation occurred in 1833, when they were republished in Richard Bentley's Standard Novels series (illustrated by Ferdinand Pickering and sold as a set). They gradually gained wide acclaim and popular readership. In 1869, fifty-two years after her death, her nephew's publication of A Memoir of Jane Austen introduced a compelling version of her writing career and supposedly uneventful life to an eager audience. Her work has inspired a large number of critical essays and has been included in many literary anthologies. Her novels have also inspired many films, including 1940's Pride and Prejudice, 1995's Sense and Sensibility and 2016's Love & Friendship.

The sort of book that you feel you should read. However got as far as page 27 and, really, what was it all about.

Think this was written in 1800s. So you have to allow for the language that was used then (putting the age as twenty and two or twenty and nine but was finding that annoying). Was Austin from England? “Realized” is spelt with an ‘s’ in England.

Jumping back and to between characters at the beginning was confusing. Also introducing so many characters at the beginning - who was this supposed to be about?

In the 1800s when this was written I assume it had been hand written. However I found,(the same with Dickens), that the novel could have done with some serious editing before being printed.

Sense & Sensibility: I was confused by the flurry of characters introduced at the beginning of the book. The primary Characters are Elinor and Marianne, but they have an unimportant 3rd sister who kept me confused about who was who until she was dropped from the story. At points the book reads like the author was tired of writing, or had no idea what she wanted to do and things are just glossed over. The ending of the book is probably one of the most heinous examples of this, wrapping everything up into a single short chapter.

The story itself was enough to keep me interested, though nothing was particularly gripping. It's just an alright little story.

Persuasion: Once again I prefer the lesser known book in the set. Anne is a marvelous woman, and her tale is filled with interesting moments and situations. I found the end particularly gripping and stayed up later than I should have to finish the book.

I love to read, but some reason have had the works of Jane Austen for years, but never completed any reading. Having returned from vacation & made a trip to the library only for the book club meeting and not allowing enough time to select books for reading, I was forced to look to my own extensive personal library. Here I found this huge book & started with the first story, Sense and Sensibility. The old style language slowed the reading of the story, but it was interesting because it was so foreign to my own concept of relationships, lifestyle, engagements and social norms. The limited opportunities for women in this society were enslaving. Jane Austen herself escaped some of the limits by remaining single and engaging herself with her writing. The unchanging parts of her story were the foibles of the heart, which remain the same across the ages.

So, I hope you all still like me by the end of my advertising my new book blog http://readabookandwrite.blogspot.ca/. I'm doing book reviews and recommendations, and I'm writing them in great detail. I hope you'll take a look! Thanks!!

More of Austen's classic works. As I've said before, I utterly delight in Jane Austen's precise understanding of human nature. She was a psychologist way before Freud invented the term. I'd bet good money and a place in heaven that her works were a profound influence on his.

A big bite to chew in one sitting....I need to re-read it again with taking breaks to think about it. I do love happy endings.
