Hidden Prey is book one in the Lawmen/Deadly Intent series by Cheyenne McCray. Fleeing from an abusive relationship Tori Cox on arrival in her hometown she, witnesses the execution of a federal agent by the head of the Jimenez Cartel. Special Agent Landon Walker became involved in protecting Tori when he realized there was a hit on Tori's life. The readers of Hidden Prey will continue to follow Landon and Tori to find out what happens.

Hidden Prey was the first book I read by Cheyenne McCray and an enjoyable book. I would differently read another book by Cheyenne McCray. I engaged with the characters and the story of Hidden Prey from the first page. I like Cheyenne McCray's portrayal of her characters and their interaction with each other. Hidden Prey was well-written and researched by Cheyenne McCray. I like Cheyenne McCray's description of Hidden Prey's settings, which complemented the book's plot.

The readers of Hidden Prey will learn about a special sponge syringe that helps stop the bleeding from a gunshot wound. Also, Hidden Prey's readers will learn about drug addiction and its consequences for the community.

I recommend this book.

HOT! HOT! HOT! And not only because the location takes place in Arizona!

Tori Cox has left her abusive boyfriend and on her way to visit her parents in Bisbee. Taking a short cut, she sees a man murdered in an alley and runs for her life. She literally runs right into the arms of Landon Walker, a special agent with the Department of Homeland Security. The murdered man turns out to be an undercover agent who was investigation a particular drug cartel.

Lots of explosive action as Tori is shunted from safe house to safe house, while members of the cartel keep finding them.

Cheyenne McCray's books are always highly engaging ... extremely nasty bad guys and beautiful heroines, who are strong women in their own right, and a passionate relationship between hero and heroine.

When I take a break away from serial killers, I find it very cleansing for my soul to read this author's books. I always try to remember to keep the fan on when I'm reading ...but that's a good thing to me.

This is first in a series ... I'm definitely looking forward to reading the rest of the series, as well.

Thank You to the author who supplied me with a digital copy in exchange for an honest opinion.

This is the first book in the Deadly Intent series.

After Tori Cox witnesses the murder of an undercover DHS agent, she becomes the focus of a manhunt by the Jimenez cartel. Running into another agent, Landon Walker, saves her life. Landon stays by her side in trying to outrun the cartel who seems to have insider information on her whereabouts.

I loved all the action in this one: running, explosions, gun battles, and not-so-safe houses. The forced proximity and high stress situations bring Landon & Tori together quickly and I enjoyed the way that played out.

I truly enjoyed the ending and the HEA McCray gave these two. They deserved it. I’m looking forward to Dylan’s book, No Mercy.

Narration:
Paul Woodson did a good job here. Voices, accents, and all the emotions. It was an enjoyable listen.

CW (spoilers):
rape (not MC), abduction, death of multiple agents

“Hidden Prey” by Cheyenne McCray is the first book in the exciting ‘Lawmen’ series. Landon Walker works for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement Agency of the Department of Homeland Security and that has become his entire focus since the tragedy that destroyed his life. Music professor and clarinet player Tori Cox has fled back home after her relationship has imploded but she never could have anticipated becoming the key witness in a dangerous case that could change the structure of a powerful drug cartel. Fortunately, Tori finds a protector in the sexy and powerful Landon but the enemies they are facing may have more resources than the pair can overcome. Together, Landon and Tori search for a way to survive and perhaps to find a way to allow the attraction they feel for one another time to flourish.

I love romantic suspense stories and this one definitely appeals to my love of a mixture of excitement and love story. There is always a soft spot in my heart for those in the law enforcement field and yum, this series promises to hit all of the notes that I most adore in this genre. The story starts with a poignant description and only becomes more intense as it progresses. I enjoyed the way layers unfolded around the hero and heroine and it is always wonderful for me to read about heroines who are proactive in their own defense. The villains are very creepy and this definitely is not a story for those who are squeamish because there is a fair amount of violence and a pretty disturbing sexual assault by one of the main bad guys that highlights his evil nature. I think that this is a fantastic start to an enthralling series and I can’t wait to read more stories from this very talented author.

The book was decent, with a god story and a lot of action. But it just pushed the bounds of believable for me a bit.

She also had a tendency to over explain things instead of showing us things, but I will say that improved a little as the book went on.

The insta love though was a little to insta for my taste, especially since he was grieving his dead fiancé and she had been raped by her ex before she left.

But the writing itself wasn’t bad or cringy or anything so that’s always nice and overall I enjoyed the story.

I have always been an avid reader. Long before the digital world of publishing exploded and the vast choices of reading material were available, I found I was wanting more than the traditional publishers were offering. I was tired of cookie cutter romances and books that were a bit too predictable. I wanted more than my mother's harlequin romances, I wanted sexier, darker, and edgier. I wanted something with a little more meat to it with less censoring. I wanted something more exciting. That is how I found Cheyenne McCray. At that time she was working with a smaller publishing house that paved the way for the digital book world. I was downloading her books in PDF format at a lower price than traditionally published books. I was reading these books on my computer. Several months after the digital copy release, the paperback copy would become available at a higher price than most paperbacks at the time. I didn't care because I was paying for something I desperately wanted. At that time Cheyenne McCray was writing edgier romantic suspense, erotic romances, and erotic paranormal romances. She was one of my favorite authors. When I saw the new release of Hidden Prey, I instantly downloaded it because it's been quite some time since I read a book from Cheyenne McCray. Because of the overwhelming choices in the book world, somehow Cheyenne McCray got lost in the shuffle of my personal book choices. The change in the publishing industry gave me too many choices. It was nice to see an old favorite with something new.

As I started reading Hidden Prey, I found this story was very familiar to me. I then realized that this was an old title ( from the former publishing house of long ago) that had been re edited and updated to fit into today's world. The new improved edition of Hidden Prey was just as exciting and enthralling as the original. It's story plot still fit into today's world. I enjoyed this book just as much as I had the original copy. For fans of romantic suspense, this book is timeless. I would highly recommend this book and the upcoming books in this series.

Hidden Prey is one of those great books that keeps you on the edge of your seat. I have to admit I was hanging on tightly and wondering what in the world was going to happen next. There is plenty of suspense and drama that kept me spellbound throughout the whole story.

Tori Cox has just left her boyfriend and really just wants to go home to see her parents. All she wants is some down time with her family and some time away from the stress of her life. Then she sees something she really wasn't prepared for. She watches the execution of a federal agent. That is when life starts to get crazy for Tori.

In her quest to stay safe she meets federal agent Landon Walker. Landon has a bone to pick with the cartel that killed one of his fellow agents. So he makes it his mission to protect Tori. He doesn't mean to form feelings for her but they are drawn to each other.

There are so many things that happen in this book. Just when you think Tori and Landon are safe they so ARE NOT! Things blow up, people are killed, shots are fired. There is drama and suspense all over the place in this book.

Then there is the romance between Tori and Landon. They are just what the other needs. Landon is healing from losing a loved one. Tori is freshly broken up with her boyfriend. I loved watching these two get to know each other and fall for each other amidst the drama that is now Tori's life.

I don't want to tell you too much. I will tell you that you should grab a copy of this book. It is the first book in the Lawmen series. I can't wait to see what Ms. McCray comes up with next. I know I will be anxiously awaiting her next release. She always serves up a terrific storyline.

I was given the opportunity to read this book so that I may share my thoughts with you. As always it has been my great pleasure to share my thoughts with you on Hidden Prey.

4+ STAR RATING- This is the first novel I've read by Cheyenne McCray and I'm impressed. I loved the premise of the story, the typical damsel in distress being rescued by the sexy and capable hero but have to say the book was a bit better than some of the guilty pleasure stories I tend to read. Don't get me wrong, the book still had a thread of guilty pleasure, but it was still a solid romantic suspense book with good writing.

I thought the author did a good job of balancing the romance and the suspense. The book was much sexier than I was expecting. While it wasn't erotic, it was quite steamy, and the sexy bits were very well done. I liked that the heroine was pretty tough under the circumstances. There weren't too many TSTL moments which I appreciated. The hero wasn't an over the top alpha but he definitely had some protective instincts and was a very easy hero to like. The very end of the book got a bit cheesy but I didn't think it detracted from the overall quality of the story.

I picked this book up on the fly when I noticed I could borrow it for free through a subscription service I'm using. After finishing, I was happy to see Hidden Prey is part of a series but disappointed to see it's the first book and nothing else has released yet. I definitely plan to read more in this series and go back and read more from this "new to me" author. I recommend this book for readers that enjoy contemporary romantic suspense stories with a nice dose of steam.

This was a first for me for the author, really enjoyable.
I floved the narration. All the character was different in a good way. I didn’t forget who was in the driver seat so to speak. Just saying gruff when it counted! Hey your thinking it… this is romance. Lol
Tori is one heck of a women. Not a weepy one thank goodness. She had a lot thrown at her in this book and she didn’t break not once, well not in the omg freaking out kind of way. She kept on keeping on. I really liked that not only does she see something terrible but she is running from trouble too.
Not me.. I would have totally been the blubbering mess in the corner!

She really is a perfect match for our boy Landon.
Landon, oh Landon, how honorable and manly is that a characteristic? If it isn’t it should be.
He does have a lot on him his mind. I wouldn’t have blamed him one bit for not have a little melt down of his own you know. The dude is bad a..s..s..
Ok it has to be said Tori’s ex big douche… b… a… g… Freaking, big wimp. I was yelling ‘REALLY’ my kids thought I was nuts!
The connection between Tori and Landon is off the charts it’s no wonder they can’t keep their hands to them self’s.
Oh also love the action, you don’t expect what happens. This was a great read.
Here are some of my favorite quotes.
“You will die if you tell her the truth. If you don’t tell her, she will die.” - The old women’s words stuck with me throughout the story so I thought I would mention it.
“Just too make sure I am safe.” – Oh Tori who you playing we know you wanted some. Lol
“Running for your life can sure put a damper on thing.” – Really? Cause I thought they were doing pretty good even with all the running.

It's been quite a while since I've read anything by the fab Cheyenne McCray and even longer since I've read something in the romantic suspense category, so I had no expectation coming into this book. With that being said.... I was pleasantly surprised.

The story starts of with Landen and let me tell you, he made me want to just grab him up right away! Then we are introduced to Tori, our mysterious heroine who is on the run! When she ends up in the wrong place at the wrong time and runs straight into Landen's arms the story is on! I loved the chemistry between these two right from the start and at first I wasn't sure how they would come together but they just gravitated to each other and the story worked out beautifully. I loved seeing them fall head over heels for each other!

The plot of the book starts off right away and the bad guys, gun toting, drug dealing bad guys are some seriously sick twits. I absolutely adored that they were fleshed out had depth and added something to the story and plot development. That was why I ended my affair with RS before, the bad guys were too generic & nebulous. With the Big Bads being so fleshed out, it brought a whole new element to the story that I was surprised I enjoyed.

Over all this book captured my attention, made me want to beat the minutes left time on my kindle, and judging that I absolutely devoured this book- It was AMAZING! This is a must read and I'm definitely looking forward to the next book in the series in a way I haven't looked forward to a sequel in a while. :)

Edgy, Sexy, Suspense-Awesome Summer Read

Immediately the book starts off with a bang-bad guys kill , heroine in wrong place, saved by hero and off they go trying to stay one step ahead of the killers....

I fell so in love with Landon Walker, the hero. He is a special agent with Homeland Security. He has some demons in his past and he is trying to stay above water and come back to the land of life. Literally he saves the heroine, Tori Cox's life. There is a pull to each other. But almost immediately there is a secret that could rip them apart from each other. A secret from the past......

I was rivited to this story. I put off doing the dishes, doing dinner until I finished this story. There are some great secondary characters that I would love to see get their own stories.

In the end, there is a great HEA and I loved how it all turned out. I would really recommend this story. The way Ms. McCray writes , the background comes to life in your mind from the words on the page. The characters feel like real people. You cant go wrong reading this story. Hope to read more in the lawmen books....

Tori Cox is a musician, plays clarinet for a symphony and teaches music. She’s returning home to her parents after leaving her abusive boyfriend when she witnesses an execution by a drug cartel.

Landon Walker is a special agent with Homeland Security who just happens to be visiting his grandmother when he sees Tori running from the cartel members.

I really enjoyed the suspense part of the book but felt the romance needed more development. It almost felt like an after thought and not an integral part of the storyline.

SPOILERS BELOW
The great grandmother piece of this story felt weird and awkward.
Her cryptic message in the beginning never did make real sense or get explained. And some of the wrap up wasn’t believable to me. I can’t believe a cartel would ever stop looking for Tori or the granddaughter. Also, I struggled with the fact Landon kept carrying around Tori’s phone after removing the battery and that he hadn’t given it a thorough going over initially.

I voluntarily reviewed a copy provided by NetGalley. Since I received this book after it was published, I hope the multiple typos were corrected.

This is an adult romantic suspence, high octane thriller set in the beautiful southeastern Arizona area of Cochise County. Miss McCray's intimate knowledge of the area allows her the ability to describe the setting with so much detail that the reader can literally picture each scene in their head, but she doesn't focus so much on description that the reader is bogged down by it.
The character development is thorough, yet done throughout the story in a manner that keeps the story line moving. Tori and Landon are complex characters that intertwine as the story opens, develops and makes exciting twists and turns.
The plot itself is relevant to what is happening in the world today. A drug cartel, undercover federal agents, and a witness to a murder all in a quiet town in AZ on the border of Mexico.
This story has a HOT hero, action, romance, sex, and suspense. I liked that I couldn't figure out the ending. The relationship between Tori and Landon is hot, steamy, and complicated.
It is a very difficult story to put down!

I have to say I have loved Cheyenne McCray's books for quite some time. Some of my favorites have been the Armed & Dangerous series and her Magic series. So when I had the opportunity to read/review her latest release I would have jumped through hoops to do it.

*No hoops were harmed in the reading/reviewing of this fantastic book!

Hidden Prey contained all my favorite aspects of a book... a hot-sexy-cowboy-lawman, lots of riveting suspense, and of course toe-curling, cold shower taking, rolls in the sheets! Can a girl ask for anything more?

Both of these characters were so well written. I loved the fact that Tori didn't turn to a pile of mush when faced with danger-she stood her ground. Landon...as alpha male as he is, Landon didn't just take right over for Tori. The give and take between the 2 characters complimented each other. They were believable.

Hidden Prey is an absolutely fabulous start to what I am sure will be Cheyenne McCray's best series yet! A must read for any of Chey's fans or for fans of romantic suspense, hell, it's just a must read book!

McCray's first installment of the Lawmen Series was a great suspenseful romance novel. Tori and Landon have great chemistry even in the midst of all the danger that surrounds them. The plot was fast paced, and the characters were well-rounded. I did want more on the background of the Tori and Landon. They both have trouble in their pasts that go largely unexplored other than that Tori is still actively running from hers when she stumbles into the wrong place at the wrong time and Landon has closed himself off from everyone. There was more depth that could have come out of those pasts, but the characters were still compelling and so was the story. I'm looking forward to see what else comes from this series.

Landon has been in hell for the last 14 months, after his fiancé was killed in an accident, but he's trying to dig himself out of his pain. Tori is has just made a life altering change in her life, namely getting rid of her creep ex. As the old saying goes, life changes around every corner. Tori and Landon are thrown together and their lives are on nothing but a roller coaster afterwards. I loved all the little twists and changes that happened in this story!!! As per usual job well done Ms. McCray another series that I know I'm going to be addicted to.

This was my first book by McCray and I enjoyed it. I've been trying to branch out and try new romantic suspense authors and McCray is a keeper. The suspense was strong, the romance hot and fast but believably so, and while there was some predictability, there were also some good twists and turns. The Arizona setting was a bonus too. Now to get my hands on book two. :)

The couple: Landon and Tori

Romance trope: romantic suspense
Series: Lawmen/Deadly Intent
Length: 294 pages

Plot: Tori is back in town after leaving her emotionally abusive and controlling boyfriend. She stumbles upon a murder and flees the scene with the perpetrators chasing her. She is rescued by Landon, a DHS/ICE agent, who has been investigating the criminals in question for quite a while. They are members of a cartel, and the person they killed was an undercover agent. Now Landon must protect Tori, both as a witness and the woman he is falling in love with.

Commentary: I liked this story, although there was, in my opinion, some lack of balance in the plot. For example, there was little said about the dead fiancee, with all the focus being on Landon's guilt. Since there was no mention of her as a bad person (I've noticed a lot of times when there is a dead wife/fiancee, she ends up being a cheater or bad in some other way, as a means of establishing the heroine's superiority). I would have liked to know why Landon loved her - just a little. Was she studying to be a nurse or were they talking about having a family, that sort of thing. I wanted to know that Landon felt more than guilt. Also, I felt like there was too much time given to Tori's fear of her boyfriend being hurt. I mean, on one hand, I get it. They just broke up and she's a good person who doesn't want someone else tortured. On the other hand, he's been abusing her for a while and she definitely left him and her first thoughts were worry for him. I didn't want her to wish him dead, but I didn't want her to think about him as much as she did. Those are both small things, however, and very specific to me being nitpicky.

But there were things that I liked as well. Landon did not jump into bed with Tori right away, and thankfully, it wasn't only his refusal to move on from his fiancee that caused that. He was being cautious because of his job, which made sense. At the same time, we did see that he was conflicted about moving on, but in the context of him engaging in normal life activities (at the beginning of the story). Also, I loved that Tori was an accomplished clarinetist (although I think the long list of accomplishments in the epilogue was a bit much and highly unlikely).
This is an author I would read again.

Next book in the series: No Mercy

4 1/2 stars!

Hidden Prey is the first book in the Deadly Intent series, and one you don't want to miss! With an interesting storyline, complex characters, secrets, betrayal, intense situations, suspense, danger, and intriguing twists, this page turner will keep you on the edge of your seat from beginning to end. An outstanding book, and great start to this series!

Running away from her emotionally abusive ex, Tori is going home to her parents, which is the last thing she ever thought she'd be doing. Having to walk the final way, she takes a short cut and ends up witnessing a murder of a federal agent by the ruthless Jimenez cartel. When Landon, an agent with Homeland Security rescues her from the thugs chasing her, they have no idea how much both of their lives are going to change.

Can Landon keep her safe from the cartel? Will they figure out how the cartel keeps finding them before it's too late? What will happen when Tori finds out about the secret that Landon is keeping from her? Will they give into the chemistry between them when it becomes too much to handle? Will theyget the HEA they deserve, or will the cartel take away everything they love permanently? You'll have to read it to find out!

I strongly recommend this book, series, and author.

An Unputdownable, steamy, action packed story.

What a fantastic start. I think it's going to be a brilliant series!
A storyline that gives you plenty to keep you turning those pages!

kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time, it is
interesting, exciting, gripping, action packed and kept a fantastic pace.

There were a lot of likable characters, some not so nice but they play a interigal part of making the whole story so gripping unpredictable.

It is also some sexy, steamy love story that you’ll just suck pull in! The sex was exactly what I expected after all that adrenaline rush of fighting to stay alive. Landon and Tori needed the rush and satisfying pleasure that they could only get form some sizzling, passionate love making.

The author did a marvellous job with way she writes, the characters, dialogue, pase and deatails are great. The story is perfect, I love it ❤

Paul Woodson's excellent narration of the story brought the book alive so brilliantly. Listening was pleasurable.

Tori has finally left her schmuck of an abusive boyfriend behind. But on her way back to her parents home to lick her wounds, she runs smack into trouble of the Cartel kind. But when she runs from the scene of a murder she literally runs into the arms of Landon Walker, DHA agent.

Landon happens to know the undercover agent who has been murdered and takes Tori into custody to keep her safe. But when her location is continually leaked to the Cartel, he has to wonder if there is a leak in the department or is Tori herself is unwittingly giving them away.

Tori is a strong character and I really enjoyed her journey from abused woman to being her own hero! Landon is the perfect mix of Alpha man and sensitive soul, with a strong streak of loyalty and family.

Definitely want to read more of this series!!

Author Cheyenne McCray has a way of writing action. Hidden Prey is the first in her hot series Deadly Intent. This is a very good story with solid characters and I really liked that the heroine wasn’t a basket case after all that she went through. But you’ll have to read to see for yourself what that is. I do have to disclose that there is abuse and rape for those who have issues with those types of triggers. I usually skip these books but I’ve read this author before and really enjoy her work. The story was full of action, suspense, and some hot sexy scenes you should totally check this out if you like action.

It mostly flows well and there is a fair bit of action and adventure, and I liked the setting and the context. The sex scenes are a not bad but lacked any real chemistry and the romance seemed too fast and too unrealistic for me even for a romance story. For me the main characters both had really stupid moments, and the machismo at the denouement bordered on the ridiculous. However they were not unlikeable and I was involved enough to want to listen to the end.
The narration was good, not outstanding but perfectly fine, and better than many others.
Overall 3.5 stars

This book is more like 3 1/2 stars. I didn't give it 4 because about 30% of the way through I was contemplating not finishing it. Up to that point I'd found the dialog flat and unimaginative. Characterization was the same and pretty much nonexistent for the secondary characters. In addition, the sentence structure became monotonous. Too many of the sentences were simply subject-verb or subject-verb-object and all about the same length, making the writing seem amateurish.

I'm glad I decided to continue reading because the story did get better and started holding more of my interest. I found the h's escape a bit far-fetched though. I haven't decided if I'll read more in the series.
