Laying hands upon the injured and dying, Avry of Kazan absorbs their wounds and diseases into herself. But rather than being honored for her skills, she is hunted. Healers like Avry are accused of spreading the plague that has decimated the Fifteen Realms, leaving the survivors in a state of chaos.
Stressed and tired from hiding, Avry is abducted by a band of rogues who, shockingly, value her gift above the golden bounty offered for her capture. Their leader, an enigmatic captor-protector with powers of his own, is unequivocal in his demands: Avry must heal a plague-stricken princeleader of a campaign against her people. As they traverse the daunting Nine Mountains, beset by mercenaries and magical dangers, Avry must decide who is worth healing and what is worth dying for. Because the price of peace may well be her life .
When Maria V. Snyder was younger, she aspired to be a storm chaser in the American Midwest so she attended Pennsylvania State University and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Meteorology. Much to her chagrin, forecasting the weather wasn’t in her skill set so she spent a number of years as an environmental meteorologist, which is not exciting...at all. Bored at work and needing a creative outlet, she started writing fantasy and science fiction stories. Over twenty four novels and two short story collections later, Maria’s learned a thing or three about writing. She’s been on the New York Times bestseller list, won a dozen awards, and has earned her Masters of Arts degree in Writing from Seton Hill University, where she is now a faculty member.
Her favorite color is red. She loves dogs, but is allergic, instead she has a big black tom cat named…Kitty (apparently naming cats isn’t in her skill set either). Maria also has a husband and two children who are an inspiration for her writing when they aren't being a distraction. Note: She mentions her cat before her family.
When she's not writing she's either playing pickleball, traveling, or taking pictures. Being a writer, though is a ton of fun. Where else can you take fencing lessons, learn how to ride a horse, study marital arts, learn how to pick a lock, take glass blowing classes and attend Astronomy Camp and call it research? Maria will be the first one to tell you it's not working as a meteorologist.

I read it after a surgery when I was recovering in bed and exploring a library’s online database. I got the urge to read it again and because I super liked the story the first time, I decided to buy it.
There are critiques on people not liking Kerrick, and this is a mild spoiler warning for the 1st volume and my take on the feeling we get at the end of the series if reading further, for an incident that occurs in the first book.
I think it’s important to point out this is a post apocalyptic esque fantasy book. The main male character is essentially an army leader. When the incident takes place, I feel like if roles had been reversed people would not have been so upset our main lead hit him. I think it would have been rationalized. But because he is male, his hitting her is seen as him being some abusive boyfriend. They are not together. It’s a slow burn, they don’t get together for a while! And he doesn’t hit her again. They end up talking about it to. I understood why he bitchslapped her. Doesn’t make it right, and they work through it. But it’s not like it was unprovoked either. Our main lead is an instigator XD. He treats her with military tactics and like she is an escaped prisoner ‘cause she kind of is.
Anyways, I like him it’s a reason I bought the books! Her study series is interesting too but I haven’t finished it and to be honest I just enjoyed her healer trilogy better. Heads up! It does kind of cutoff at the end when you wish there was bit more of an epilogue but we do get the feeling it’s a happy ever after and those are my favorite kind of endings~
I love the main character Avry, a wonderful healer with a heart too big to not try to heal everyone....no spoilers.... but she is one surprising character, along with Kerrick, Belen, "the Monkeys", and Flea. I fell in love with this group and their adventures throughout the trilogy are amazing.
I just started the "Study Series" and so far that one promises to be just as exciting.
I didn’t think I would like this more than the study series but I really did. I liked the character Avery. She was strong, clever and stubborn. Unlike the study series the protagonist didn’t doubt herself or her heart.
Loved the story. My only complaint is the ending. It was cut short. I know we all hate when the book ends but it was like hey we won. Game over. The end. Not even an epilogue. Disappointed at the rush ending. :(
My favourite series from Maria V Snyder. It had me laughing out loud, crying, and always on the edge of my seat. Full of magic, love, action and comedy - this fantasy series will appeal to readers from young adult and above. Highly recommend this series.
