Snider, Brandon Gamora’s Galactic Showdown (Guardians of the Galaxy Chapter Book), 119 pages. Marvel, 2017. $6. Language: G (o swears); Mature Content: G; Violence: G.

This is the story of Gamora taking time off from the guardians to confront the trauma of her past. She is looking for a box that was valued by her evil father. She runs into Rocket and they end up going together. They run into friend after friend, who each help in their own way with the quest: both in battle and in advice for Gamora on how to cope with her past. Eventually things come to a head as she must face her evil sister, Nebula.

Due to an extremely high vocabulary level, I would say 3 grade and up would have the best comprehension. Though the book is kind of laid out like an chapter book with lots of color illustrations, font changes to represent different characters speaking, and creative layouts. I think this series would be great for those 3-5 grade reluctant and/or low readers. The plot was very much about healing and resolution for Gamora, which could be a weighty topic for younger readers.

I think this book is going to trip up a lot of young readers. The vocabulary is of very big words while the story is easy enough to follow. I might recommend it for a high level reluctant reader, one who isn’t sure they are ready for long chapter books but can read really well.

This is a novel for young readers, part of the Mighty Marvel Chapter Books series. While it's a prose story, it is full of color illustrations from the team of Qualano and Sotomayor.

The story involves a mysterious box that belonged to Thanos, but which appears to be keyed so that only Gamora can open it. Gamora wants to find the box in the hopes of furthering her quest to make peace with her past. But her sister, Nebula, is also interested in the box, lured by the possibility of it containing an item of power, and possibly also just out of spite to keep it from her sister.

Gamora's quest brings her into contact with a whole array of Marvel's cosmic characters, from her friends in the Guardians of the Galaxy, to Pip the Troll, the Collector, Captain Marvel, and Adam Warlock. Unfortunately, the effort to cram the book full of cameos detracts a bit from the story. It would have worked perfectly well with just Gamora, Nebula, Warlock (who does have an important role here) and maybe one or two others thrown in as sidekicks.

The bloated cast takes the focus off of Gamora too much, which is unfortunate, because Gamora's inner struggle is actually really interesting. Her search to resolve the conflicting loyalties of her abusive family situation with Thanos and Nebula and her loving (if dysfunctional at times) chosen families of the Guardians and the Infinity Watch is the true conflict in the story. And when it is the focus, the story works really well.

The violence is kept to a toned-down PG level, and some of the emotional issues are a bit overexplained, but the central quest is handled well, and Gamora shines in the parts of the story where she's in the spotlight.

I'm seeing a recurring theme here: Gamora's determined to let go of her past, while Nebula desperately clings onto it. They remind me of Jedi and Sith in that sense, and it's great!

A bit of a cliche when it comes to the themes of found family having each others' backs, but in the best possible way. I love Gamora's intention to do as much good as she can, a very stark contrast to the life she once led.

And frustrating as Nebula's character is for constanly trying to ruin Gamora and gain Thanos' favor, I also feel so much pity that she is so trapped in such a painful, suffering existence. It's a good thing that she's canonically broken free from that.

Having watched all of the marvel movies featuring the Guardians of the Galaxy, I kept getting confused while reading this book. I guess this is more of an issue between the many different versions of the Marvel characters and not specific to this book but it still impacted my reading. Beyond that, the art style sometimes bothered me, but I am not a fan of comic art overall. Both of these issues limit my experience but do not warrant a two-star rating on their own. The writing was just not good. These short chapter books for junior readers can often suffer from "this happened and then this happened" writing, and this book is no exception. Nothing unique or fun.

Gamora finds herself on an alien planet, looking for the cube she hopes will end the evil power her father wields so she can find peace. She’s hunted by evil foe and rescued by friends she hasn’t seen in a while.
They offer to help Gamora in her quest but she refuses saying she doesn’t want to expose her friends to danger. They insist on helping her. Does she manage to find the cube and does it give her the peace she is searching for?
I enjoyed this short, fast-paced chapter book.
Recommend for readers aged 8-10 years.

Gamora centric story featuring some familiar characters (Rocket, Adam Warlock, Drax) and Pip the Troll!?! Groot and Starlord make brief appearances.

Gamorra is the deadliest woman in the galaxy and she has a dark past. Taking off some time from the Guardians of the Galaxy, Gamorra goes in search of mysterious cube that once belonged to her father. The mission, however, is dangerous and will force her to face her evil sister, Nebula. Soon, however, she'll need the help of Rocket, Pip the Troll, and Adam Warlock to accomplish her mission. Will she succeed?

The plot is action-packed and engaging. The characters are true to the original movie ones. The illustrations are bright, colorful, and reminiscent of the original movie. The addition of text that pops on the page is also fun. Fans of action, adventure, science fiction, mystery, and Guardians of the Galaxy will enjoy reading this book.
