However, this book is for serious beginners, who really want to learn Spanish and are willing to accept the challenge of a rather intense layout of procedures. I must admit that the challenge was certainly beneficial. I would suggest that the slow audio section be speeded up a little. It is quite slow .
I have found this book fantastic practice for listening and understanding Spanish. The audiobook comes with an accompanying PDF document containing transcriptions of each of the 11 short stories with a glossary of new vocabulary and summaries in Spanish and English. I would say, however, this is not for beginners. If you have very rudimentary Spanish skills than this may be a step to far at the moment if you intend to listen without the written text in front of you. The grammar in this book is around B1/B2 level for those that follow the official DELE exam curricula. I say this as I'm currently studying for the B2 exam and can follow probably 75% of the content here without having to pause and read the extracts. For people at a similar level to myself, I would recommend this as a great way to get some Spanish listening in, rather than trying to watch films or television which, whilst more authentic can be a little intimidating due to how fast native Spanish speakers converse!
One last thing, a couple of the stories get surprisingly gruesome at parts, which caught me off guard. Whilst not overly so (it's not exactly Steven King), I wasn't expecting such narrative turns as the early stories are typically tame for a foreign language text book!
When I was starting to read the book from the first few pages, a prompt popped out asking me to review the book. It wouldn’t let me go to the next page until I make my review. Strange and annoying.
Really enjoyed this. The stories build vocabulary as you read, but importantly the word stick because the stories have great twists. A really quirky & enjoyable read, plus you are learning!!
These are great little stories, although I would argue that they are not beginning level but more intermediate. I wish there was a Portuguese version, as well. Thank you!
Decent amount of errors, even in the quizzes. Por ejemplo, in the first quiz the answer is listed as E) when this wasn't even a choice on the quiz. Just one example here... and that's the first story.
Otherwise, a good supplement & teaches some interesting expressions.
**4.5 Stars** As a teacher of language, all ages but more than half of my students are children, I would and will personally recommend this book to those trying to learn Spanish. I have learned 2 additional languages other than my mother tongue, that of American Sign Language and Spanish, so I have looked for all manner of books and such to help me in my learning. What most strikes me as useful about this book is that the simple "stories" and conversations are full of common everyday words that one will use so you can get started practicing immediately which will greatly help in the learning process. The more one can use the words on a daily basis the faster they will make progress and having stories such as the one in the book do just that. I know for me when I was learning Spanish I did not want to practice until I could say something useful and not make me feel as if I was unintelligent because my words were more along the lines of what a child would say. This book will help learners get over the fear of sounding foolish or childish and have more confidence in using what they learn.
Something else about the book is that the basic sentences also teach you the conjugation of the verbs in the process so you will more readily grasp the concepts in later advanced stages of learning Spanish. The audio download IS A MUST so please be sure to take the 5 minutes time and get it. Also, science has shown that when we involve more of our senses in the learning process the better we retain the information so listening and reading along will help immensely in retention as well as with pronunciation.
The only reason I did not mark this book 5 stars is because I would like to have seen a phonetic guide for the pronunciation of the vocabulary words. And another useful aspect of the book was the vocabulary list at the end of each chapter, it allows you to bookmark the page and return to just one spot to review them as opposed to having to flip or scroll through pages.
