The first book in the Thief Series. It's been eighteen months since the tragedy of Daisy Rourke. What happened to the boy who fell for her? The book that explains it Thief If it came down to it, who would you save? Your girlfriend or your family? As far back in his seventeen years as Trane Braxton can remember, he’s been a thief. A good one. With a cruel and abusive master thief for a father, he’s desperate to keep himself and his brothers from a life of crime. When he meets London Carstairs, his unbreakable rule of not getting involved with anyone outside his family goes up in smoke. As hard as he tries to keep his two lives separate, fate forces his hand. When his two worlds meet head-on, he must choose between the girl he loves and the family he’s been working so hard to protect.
Coltrane Braxton, Trane, comes from a family of thieves. His father is abusive yet has raised his son’s to be thieves. Trane hates this life but is willing to do anything to make sure his brothers are OK. London Carstairs is the daughter of a jewelry store owner and model. London is tired of the modeling life and just wants to spend one summer as a normal kid.
London’s father tells her to work at a local pool as a life guard like he did during his summer’s and she jumps at the chance. At the pool London meets Trane and becomes a little obsessed with him. The feeling is mutual but Trane tries to keep some distance between the two of them. Both don’t really want the other to learn the secret of their families.
This was a good story, kind of typical teenagers meet from the wrong sides of society and fall for each other. They have secrets that they don’t the other to know about. When I learned about London’s family having a jewelry story and Trane being a thief I had a little bit of an idea where this story was going. But I will say there were some surprises that I was not expecting.
This was a good read for a young adult story. It was my first book from Elena Dillon and I think that it was a great introduction to her work. I will definitely be checking out her other books.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. I voluntarily chose to read and post an honest review.
I finished this book in a day , just could not put it down. I enjoyed the storyline and all the characters . This was the first time reading anything from this particular author and I was impressed . Looking forward to her next book.
This author hit the nail on the head with teenaged angst. And this story is not the typical teen/young adult story. There is nothing typical about the main characters, or their family lives, at least that which we are used to. London is an up-and-coming model who just wants a "lazy" summer. By that she means not working in the industry and doing something different. She's decided to go to work at the public pool where her dad worked when he was a young man. And there the story flips. She meets Trane Braxton. And he's from "the other side of the tracks" kind of life. This is sure to NOT be good. Trane is in living hell. He's from a big family, and his dad.... is just not a good person. The angst, the tension and the suspense in this novel is great, and the budding romance between these two characters is just as good.
this was a fast paced.. interesting and had quite a few twists and turns i didnt see coming. the characters were interesting and kept me curious.. it was all around a well written and interesting story
Back in December 2014, Ms Dillon wrote a prequel to Thief that was called Gone. Ever since then I have been waiting to learn more about the very complex young man named Coltrane ("Trane") Braxton. Who was this teenager with a dark side and at the same time was the most gentle loving brother to his premie sister? [You owe it to yourself to read Gone right now before you start this book. Go ahead. It is very reasonably priced and will only take an hour or less. Then you will be as anxious as I was to read this new book titled Thief!] So I was thrilled and excited to have the chance to finally learn more about Trane. I stayed up wayyy too late reading because I couldn't stop. I was so amazed, horrified, excited, worried, and interested in the story that I didn't sleep until the final page.
Thief is the story of two teenagers who shouldn't meet, shouldn't get together, and shouldn't fall in love. Alternating chapters are told from the point of view of Trane and London. London Carstairs is the daughter of a wealthy jewelry store owner, and is a successful model as well. Beautiful and wealthy, and sick of traveling around on shoots. When her father tells her he would like her to lifeguard at the pool where he worked in high school, she is thrilled. She wants to stay home and try to be normal. At the pool she gets paired up with Trane Braxton for classes and drills. Trane is a loner, uncommunicative, and handsome in a "bad boy" way, complete with a long scar on his face. He won't talk to London, but it turns out he is wonderful with the children coming for swimming lessons. The beginning of his complex personality shines through his actions, making London even more attracted to him.
I loved the character development in this book. Trane really relaxed and showed his love of family and children while hiding his secrets at the same time. He obviously cares for London because he always walks her to her car, makes sure she is safe, and gradually opens up to her. He is a very complex young man of many talents including being a pianist of much accomplishment. (His mother was a symphony flautist pre-children.) Every chapter reveals a little more of him and you are amazed and surprised. London proved to be not the spoiled rich girl as feared, but also responsible and considerate of every person she came into contact with during her life. Even her snobby and repulsive mother is treated with care and concern. I was amazed that London even worried enough about hired staff to clean up messes so they wouldn't have to when they came in the morning! Throw in volunteering at a children's hospital, and London has to be the nicest teen age girl ever! It isn't an easy romance between these two, but the friendship and trust they build leads me to believe London and Trane will be together in the next book of the series!
From rough beginning to shocking ending, this is a young adult book that is far too good to be classified only for young adults! I enjoyed it and even my children are no longer considered young adults! It is simply a breathtaking story that is romantic and troubling. I recommend it for all ages. It will stay with you long after you close the book or turn off your reader.
Let me start by saying I really struggled through this book. I was immediately captured/captivated by the first two chapters, but, it ended right there. There were several times where I considered just stopping, then plugged on thinking maybe it would get better. Sadly, I was wrong. What should have been a quick read, turned into a marathon for me. The plot/story was juvenile at best, it was classic boy meets girl and they are in that inevitable "troubled life" cycle and can't seem to make up their minds what they want. Then, add in the dysfunctional families and that's about it. There was no suspense, no mystery, no thriller angle, just a slow, painful book to read. I will say though, the characters were developed and easy to follow...no spoilers here, no spoilers to even consider...
