I only read The MacGregor Brides in this collection and it was a rare DNF for me. Admittedly the book was published in 1997 but the story was more suited to 1897, not the late 20th century. A manipulative grandfather tries to set up his granddaughters with eligible men … and they fall for it! Of the 3 tales, the one involving Gwen was the best, but I think this book has served its time …
Despite the hundreds of books that Nora Roberts has written, this is the first one of hers that I’ve read and that because it was a Christmas present. Actually, it’s a gathering together of two books ‘The MacGregor Brides’ and ‘In From the Cold.’ Even then, in the MacGregor brides is split into three, each section containing the story of one of the three MacGregor cousins. Grandfather Daniel, a strong character who has raised a posse of offspring, is determined to marry his three beautiful granddaughters off to the three men he has chosen for them. Needless to say, the young women have other ideas. Although the three sections have similar themes; after the initial resistance, the girls succumb to the inevitable. However, the background to all the stories differs, largely dependent on their respective careers, a lawyer, a doctor and a businesswoman. All are set in modern day America. ‘In From the Cold’ was by far and away my favourite book, set as it was in the early days of the American Revolution and featuring one of the early MacGregors. But then, I’m a big Outlander fan!
